Hi my fire tv got the 5.0.5 update today and I am based in the uk, however it does not seem to include Alexa is there a way of adding Alexa to my fire tv stick?
I would like to know too. That's the only reason I updated.
Thread cleaned of nonsense.
Carry on. :good:

Trying to find the same, looks like we'll need to await Amazon UK getting the finger out.

I do so love how things like this get announced with no indication of them being country specific...

Hi Everyone,
A friend of mine was telling about the FTV and I thought I'd look into it. I currently have an ATV2 with XBMC installed. For the most part it works pretty good. Icefilms is hit and miss, but I don't use it very often. ATV2 is kinda getting slow and after reading about the FTV I want one. I was wondering if someone can sort me out.
First,
If I buy a unit from Amazon can it still be rooted? I heard there was a software update in June and wondering if it's been locked up like Apple does with their stuff?
Second,
I use a Harmony One remote and heard Flirc works with the Harmony Remote. Can anyone confirm this?
Third,
That same friend who told me bought the FTV said he watched a youtube video on the FTV with XBMC installed on it and said it ran really slow. Now the video was from April, so I'm hoping XBMC has made some big improvements so it works well with FTV.
Thanks,
Chevy
Yes
If you get a FireTV you will need to use URL blocking in your router to block the amazon URLs for updates before connecting the FireTV to your network. Then you will be able to use GeoHot's Towelroot to root it and disable the Amazon updater. You will want to look into SPMC (a modified version of XBMC with special patches for Android devices, etc.)
It general it is much better than ATV2......FLIRC works with Harmony remotes although I haven't got around to setting mine up yet.
All the necessary info is here on the forum. Just read through some of the the threads.
Since I don't wanna make a whole topic, here is something that makes Fire TV chug a little.
Try this expirimental WebGL thingy in Chrome for Android on Fire TV.
http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/eye-texture-raytracer/
It even makes my mouse controls lag a bit,but otherwise does a nice job considering how extreme the test is.
Edit:More things to look at on a Fire TV using Chrome or Opera browser.

Thanks all. I'm going to get one. One question though, I was looking on eBay and found a bunch that were already rooted and had xbmc or spmc already installed. In the description they were saying "get them while you can as the new version is unrootable". Anyone think it's OK to buy from eBay or just go with Amazon?
Thanks,
Chevy

Is it cheaper/more expensive? Definitely get it from amazon. That way it is fully warrantied under your name if you have any problems they will help you. I got mine from Best Buy and it had the firmware 51.1.1.0_user_511069920.. It downloaded the next update automatically which is 51.1.1.0_user_511070220 (the last rootable firmware). I even clicked "check for updates" and it never pushed the un-rootable version.
I think they sent out a limited roll out of the unrootable firmware since the according to amazon this is the same version I have.
sorry cant post the link since im a new user search google for "amazon fire tv firmware" should be the first link
I would recommend to block the updates either on the router by blocking the amazon domains or using adb and disabling the apk which updates the ftv

Was in the same boat as you couple of weeks ago, had a ATV2 got a FTV for someone else and realized how much faster and better it was so I sold my ATV for $250, and bought a FTV for myself. On top of that I bought 2 more to install xbmc and sell
Anyways, the FTV runs wicked fast with XBMC, not sure what you saw but there is a pretty good video here

I'd say just buy one from amazon, too bad they were just on sale for $84 a few days ago and staples even had them down as low as $65 after some coupon.
The rooting is simple and fast and to disable the updates is just 1 command you type in. I wouldn't pay more for a unit that's already rooted unless I didn't know wtf I was doing.

Do you know what the URL is for blocking the updates?

I'm pretty handy at rooting and so forth. I've rooted my wife and myself android phones over the last few years so this should be pretty straight forward. I think I'll just get it through Amazon, just in case I need warranty or something.
Thanks,

There are instructions here, http://www.aftvnews.com/ for taking a new box and installing without getting updates and then blocking updates.
Thanks to everyone for all the info. I bought one from Amazon and should have it on Tuesday.

Hi! I would like to know some of your thoughts on Amazon's Android market. Is it dead? Is anyone planning to buy the new Fire HD? What are your thoughts. Will beloved independent developers step up to get ROM's working on the Fire Phone and the coming Fire HD tablets? I personally do not have a Fire Phone. I have only had the original kindle fire 1 and original kindle fire 2, but I am planning on buying the new Fire HD 7". Anyone else excited about the new device line? It seems the original Kindle Fire was the biggest success. Thanks! Looking forward to your honest answers.
actually I'm interested to get this phone.. but it's not officially available on my country, so I have to make another decision

Ah. That's too bad
I think Amazon Appstore is certainly NOT dying. Otherwise, it's expanding and now with Amazon's introduction of Fire phone it will continue to do so. Amazon Appstore, together with Google, is the leader in this field.
Hello guys. Just wanted to ask if anyone knows exactly what is going on in this video.
Is this a custom ROM running Android Lollipop?? Sounds too good to be true.
Seeing is believing I guess.
Awesome if true!! Hope coming soon to our Amazon fire tv's Can't wait.

As he says right at the beginning "this is the adt-1 google developers". The titles are all jacked up. That is not the Fire TV.

I don't know what "adt-1 google developers" is. I'll have to look that up.
What I do know is that the title of his video( Actually all his videos), have the words "Amazon Fire Stick" on them.
It's kinda misleading and had to ask someone that knows about this kinda stuff.
Why would he title almost all his videos like this
He even made an unboxing of new Fire Tv stick... Bummer.
Looks cool though. Would me nice to someday run android 5.0 on Fire TV like this video.
We haven't had no new root available For Fire TV since first root method was discovered to work on FireTV.
Trying not to lose hope and this video lifted my spirits if even for just a second... actually, Split-second:laugh:
Thanks for checking in on this.
Hope someday we can install rbox Fire TV Mods and a whole lot more soon.
Need to hook up my new Fire TV Stick and this would have been a cool mod:fingers-crossed:

Thank you for info.
Understand now what this ADT-1 is.
Still don't understand why title of his video is Amazon Fire Stick.
I wanted to know what firmware amazon was shipping their Fire Tv's with. I have two but they are both on the latest firmware and really want a rooted one so I can try the new 'playing with fire' mod. If anyone has recently bought one can you tell me which firmware it was shipped on. I'm looking to hear about the Fire Tv, but the Stick works also. I also wanted to know if anyone knew if anyone is actually trying to root the new firmware? Thanks in advance guys.
Just noticed we shouldn't ask questions here. Sorry about that guys, I'll post in the correct section.

Is there anything I can do to this thing? Mainly what I'm wanting is to run Android on it instead of the Fire OS. Any other cool things I can do to this specific TV?
Bump?

Remove the back shell of your Insignia Fire TV edition and you can see a bunch of test points on the motherboard.
Before you do this. Make sure the warranty of your TV is expired.

1) you'd need firmware that was build for your TV models' specs to replace FireOS, which probably doesn't exist
2) there is a whole chain of security with checks from the processor in up to FireOS that will prevent you from replacing FireOS.
