I have just started using the Samsung Stock Messages app for SMS, coming from Textra.
I noticed that when I hit compose and enter a contact name, it shows all the phone numbers for that person. It doesnt even show which are mobile and which are not.
On Textra it labeled the numbers, and it also had an option to only show Mobile numbers.
Is there any way to do this on the Messages app? Its really confusing as I cant always tell which is even the right number to select for a text message to a contact...seems weird.
Thanks.

It does show mobile and other like work etc for me, open the messages app > contacts tab at the bottom > select contact > if contact has more than one number saved a pop-up appears with names of different numbers shown
Thanks for the reply. I feel like I am missing something as this process is so cumbersome for me that it almost doesnt make sense...
1 - in Textra and others, I hit the compose text button and start typing a name. it then immediately will show any associated numbers with labels so you can see which is the mobile, which is the home, etc. in this stock app I just see the contact name with a bunch of numbers. and if I hit one, it doesnt bring up any sort of window with all the labels.
2- following your directions, if I first go to the contacts tab (already an extra step) I see along list of all of my contact names. There is a search button, but if I hit that and type a contact, I again see an unlabeled list of numbers.
3 - if I manually scroll down the entire list until I find my contact, then when I press it I see a pop up with labels.
Any which way this is a LOT of steps to compose a text message - seems like it doesnt make sense. there is no more streamlined way?

Not that I know of, this is why there are 3rd party apps with a lot more time and attention gone into adding features over stock, personally I just leave conversations in my messages app so I can open and text direct from there, only the first ever message you send them you have to perform those steps
Why not just stick with Textra?
Great question!
Sadly, something is screwed up with AT&T, my Galaxy S9 and text messaging.
Several weeks ago, I started having an issue where I am sporadically not getting random texts. They just never appear - and then people are wondering why I didnt reply. To troubleshoot this, I went to the AT&T portal and checked the log of text messages...the missing messages are never even hitting my AT&T number, so it seems this is not an app issue.
AT&T has so far been useless in diagnosing this. But googling around, I have noticed that a number of people have had this issue and it seems AT&T's "Advanced Messaging" feature is a possible culprit. There have been reports that deactivating this has solved the issue for some users.
Unfortunately the only way to deactivate this that I have uncovered is through the stock app. And if I deactivate this in the stock app and then switch to another app like Textra, it is getting turned on again automatically. I have not discovered any way to keep this deactivated while using a 3rd party SMS app.
Crazy but tragically seems to be the case...very frustrating.

There is an app called "Package Disabler Pro" which allows without root, the disabling of system packages, if you know what the advanced messaging package is called, you might be able to permanently disable it without having to have the stock SMS app as default, perhaps disabling the Samsung stock SMS app would also do it (Just read here that Disabling the messages app on the S10+ allows Textra to work)
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/blcs1b/textra_no_sent_messages_only_received_messages/
Contacting the Textra dev would be a good idea too, ask them to add the feature you need into textra
I am also seeing another method that may disable it, by disabling VoLTE
https://textra.uservoice.com/knowle...80-t-mobile-at-t-verizon-missing-messages-rcs
Looks like that is for T-Mobile but worth a shot, if AM uses VoLTE it should kill it

Duplicate issue needs help
I am having the same issue. I have the ATT fuze, however this is my third one. The first one was perfect until there was a party foul that took it away. The second one had a typing issue so I replaced it. This third one is doing the same as the above poster mentioned. My today screen will show that I have text messages waiting to be opened but when I navigate to the folder there is nothing in it. Performed a hard-reset but the same thing happened. Installed third party software and now I can view the messages and reply. I am not happy with this "bandaid" but it will temporarily do till this can be resolved. Please help.
ROM version: 1.95.502.5 WWE
ROM date: 10/20/08
there may be something wrong with your storage card
the storage card can, by any means, have nothing to do with it. i personally never had such a problem, so i can just guess:
sample situation:
- i receive an sms, i see a notification, with the sender and the first few words.
- instead of clicking read, i press the hardware mail button to open messaging and read the sms
- while having it opened, i delete it.
- i go back to home screen and there is still a message and a notification
now i have confused my phone showing me new messages, although i already read and deleted them.
that is the only way i could think of to even get in that situation.
btw. that is the same thing with missed calls. if i have a notification of a missed call and instead of clicking the notification i open the phone manually and look whose call i missed, i will still have the message on home screen, telling me, there was a call i didn't know about, although i already checked.
please make sure that the description above is not the case.
because that is a general bug/user mistake, since the notification service is not fully integrated in pocket outlook, sometimes it gives out older data if you bypassed it to get to your information. that is normal. next time you get a message, try clicking the notification and click read or save as read, and look what consequences that has in your messaging folder.
if then still there is no message to be found, right after you read it once, it is still probably an error in the communication between notification service and pocket outlook, but then it is not your fault anymore you'd probably have to flash another rom then,
OR
it is something completely different and you need to contact your carrier, that receiving sms doesn't work out for you, that either you get a new sim or other network settings need to be changed.
my solution
I made some changes using advance config and changed portrait and landscape mode to cleartype. the fuze does not work with cleartype in landscape mode. Turn that off and it begins to work.
Text Messages not displayed
I know this is a very old thread but did anyone come out with a solution.
I'm still using my Blue Angel and it's come up with this problem.
I think it was after I received an MMS message (the first I received).
Hello. I'm wondering if anyone can assist me.
I have an Xperia Arc, running the most recent official Sony release. I have not 'rooted' or unlocked the 'phone, it is as it left the O2 shop. Plus the odd scratch or two...
When I am sent an MMS message, two annoying things happen.
1. The 'ringer' doesn't sound, the vibrator doesn't vibrate. If you happen to be looking, the light on the side of the 'phone flashes once, then nothing.
2. When I open the Messages App, the conversation relating to the person who sent the MMS message is at the top of the screen. If I open this conversation I see a blank message with the text 'Message not downloaded' in it. After a long period of time of clicking and tapping, I found that if I 'Long Click' the Message Not Downloaded notification, I get the option to download the message. Once I have manually selected the download option, the message is downloaded correctly, and once fully downloaded, the 'ringer' sounds as normal, along with any vibration.
I have no problem whatsoever in sending MMS messages.
Once the option to download has been selected, I have no problem receiving the message (apart from seeming rather slow).
I've seen threads that suggest checking or changing the APN settings, I would have thought that has to be working correctly, as sending and receiving messages works, if not automatically.
I did wonder if it might be due to being on a slow network, here at home we don't have fast O2 mobile coverage, no 3G, Edge or HSDPA here, just plain GPRS (G in status bar).
Is there a way of having the 'phone automatically download the MMS message and content?
in the first voice of the menu, i guess you can find where to download content for data and mms
Duplicate. Sorry.

I've checked all the menus I can think of, but can't see any download options. Is there a specific menu you are thinking of here CavinRay?
I had this issue before, I use handcent, and sorted it by opening up the stock message app and going into the options.
Look for something to do with 'push settings' and make sure it's selected.
Might not help but worth a shot mate.
Sent via subspace beacon from my Arc.

Thanks, I've just tried turning it off (it was already on) then exiting Messages, re-opening Messages and turning it back on.
I'll see if that has any effect on the confusion.
Wow, I must be the first one with a Zen Watch problem... or at least the first one with a Zen Watch... lucky me. Also, first time poster, so I hope I'm doing this right!
The issue I have occurs when I try to send a text message from my watch. When I do, I use voice to select a recipient as I would with Android Wear on any other device. While it looks like the message is sent from my phone (i.e it shows up in my message history with the selected recipient), the person never actually receives it. When I click on "Message Info" in the conversation history, it looks like the watch is adding "01" to the beginning of the phone number. The only thing I can think of is that this additional "Country Code" is screwing up the text.
I'm using a brand new S5, and it occurs in the stock messaging app, the Verizon messaging app, and Google Hang Outs. Any one have any ideas?

I tried a couple of times and it worked for me. Sprint HTC One Max Stock. Stock messaging app. Not using hangouts. That probably doesn't help much but at least lets you know it 'can' work.
I think your theories about country codes, etc may be right, but I would think you'd have the same issue if you do it via 'Ok Google' from the phone itself?

Hey Faxman,
Thanks for the response! Actually, you're right. I just tried it, and the same thing occurs if I try to send a voice text directly through Google Now on my phone. The message shows up in my conversation history, and looks like a normal text from my end. But it is never received at the destination. I still think that my country code analysis is the root of the issue, but I have no idea how to change it without attempting a 3rd party message app. I don't have a problem doing that inherently, but I would rather fix the problem then bandaid it
Any ideas from the massess would be awesome!
I'm having a frustrating issue with the stock Android Messages app. My work sends notification texts via email, ie. from a gmail account to "mynumber"@tmomail.net.
The Android Messages app (stock android sms app), will not download these texts. I've been troubleshooting this all week and continue to come up empty, here is a breakdown of symptoms and what I have tried:
-My phone does notify me that a message is received, but requires me to tap to attempt to download the message, but the download always fails.
-Auto-download MMS is enabled, app is up to date
-third party apps WORK (kinda, see textra screenshot. message is delivered along with a weird code)
-if there is a subject in the email, the subject WILL display in the text, but not the body
-Safe Mode does not fix it
-phone is Pixel XL from Play store on T-Mobile
-issue happened on stock unrooted phone with all updates
-after exhausting all options I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and Pure Nexus rom, issue did not go away
-have deleted and edited all APNs countless times changing damn near every option to no avail
-have tried on and off wi-fi, with and without wi-fi calling, no changes
-normal MMS works fine (picture texts, group texts)
-have tried same APNs and apps on two different devices on my plan (V20 and S6 edge), and this issue cannot be duplicated. tmomail messages works fine on those phones with the exact same settings as on my Pixel
That's basically it. Hopefully I'm missing something simple. Please help if you have any suggestions, I'm open to just about anything. I know the easy fix is to just use Textra or another third party app, but I really don't want to. Also I can't stand not knowing what the problem is!!! Thanks in advance!

Right now they are reset to default.

Hey so I know your post is literally years old but I had been going through the same problem for YEARS before someone at T-Mobile finally figured it out. I figured I would post this to give you a hand and maybe someone else with this problem.
After going back and forth with T-Mobile for, no joke, 2 years on this issue, the fix was finally discovered. It has to do with T-Mobile "Digits". It's a "free" "second line" which is really just an alternate phone number for you to give people on sites like CraigsList if you don't want people to know your real number. You can just use Google Voice for this. Anyway, call T-Mobile and tell them you don't want your Digits number linked to your cell number (at least not for texts) and it will fix the issue.
Drove me crazy for YEARS. Hope this helps you or anyone else out there!
Hi I am hoping someone might have some ideas of how to address my problem.
I am on a stock S9 on AT&T. I have had it for about 9 months...but about a month ago I started having a very problematic issue where I occasionally just dont receive a text message from someone. Its not always from the same person, and its sometimes in group texts but sometimes not. Its sporadic but often enough that its very problematic because I sometimes miss important messages without realizing.
I have been using Textra. At first I thought perhaps the problem is with Textra. But I logged in to MyAT&T portal and you can see there a log of all texts you have sent and received - the missing texts are never even showing as having been sent to me from the user.
I havent had much success figuring out what the issue is although after researching, I have noticed that some people think the culprit may be AT&T's "Advanced Messaging" function and they advise disabling it.
So I am now doing that to see if it works. The problem there though is it can only be disabled from within the stock Samsung Messages app, which I dont want to use. And if I go into that app to disable, and then switch to another Messaging app after, then every time I reboot, Advanced Messaging is on again.
If anyone has further advice on 1) understanding what the issue may be and 2) how I can permanently disable Advanced Messaging - I am desperate to receive it! Thank you.

You might have to adb push and remove advanced messaging from your system partition
