Replace LG G7 charging port due to water damage - LG G7 ThinQ Questions & Answers

This is a little explanation of what happened: by mistake splashed with water a USB-C cable suited for charging. Then I connected it to the G7 to charge it, and immediately got the debris/moisture message:

Check USB port
Charging blocked due to moisture/debris has been detected. Make sure the USB port and cable are dry and free of debris before charging.
What I did was, perfectly clean the G7 USB port with Electronic Contact Cleaner, and buy a brand new USB-C cable. However, from time to time, the message still appears sometimes when connecting the charger, and always when disconnecting any USB-C to 3.5mm jack audio DAC, probably this happens because it uses more pins than the charger?
I've contacted LG tech support on my region, and they state they'll perform a device reset and OS update, which I don't want either of them, so my best bet is to try to do it myself. The tech support states an IP Ingress Protection test is required to assure it's up to specs, to discourage me to do it myself, but I've seen tutorials on YouTube and they don't replace the cover seal, so I guess it's still protected?
I'll contact tech support again for repair price, and to know more about the back cover seal issue. Until know they didn't want to tell me how much it is, they want me to send the device over, so it's more likely I don't turn the repair down once the device is there even if the fixing is pricey.

Disassemble/assemble video

Finally bought a charging port replacement called "OEM USB Charging Charger Port Dock Connector Mic Flex Cable for LG G7 ThinQ G710" from eBay seller smileelife, apparently it's OEM quality and includes the rubber O-ring. Let's see when it arrives how it looks like.
You can choose between two models, LMG710VM and LMG710EM, which is mine.

Replaced the USB charging port, and working perfectly so far so good.

The problem was, I contacted LG, and they refused to give me a quotation on how much the repair will cost. They just require you to send the phone, which implies a factory reset and software upgrade. I've filed a Consumer Complain against LG due to not facilitating repair prices in advance. Let's see what happens and who do they favour.

The reference for the charging port on my phone is the LG EBR85980107, in case it helps somebody.

Thank you very much...however in my case I used normal charger and after that the fast charger, this way the problem solved. fast charging is causing the problem I think! Its a temporary solution though.

Oh I see, I guess you can use iphone wall charger or use a computer. None of them support QC3.0 or similar. Can't test anymore since it's fixed.

Motorola Rapid Charger Problem

I got a good deal on the Motorola rapid charger on ebay, shipped for $6. It charges fine and everything is good performance-wise, but there seems to be a problem with the micro-usb fitment with my TB. When I'm unplugging the phone from the charger it seems like it's stuck in there pretty good. Rather than just pulling on it and risking damage to my phone I just tried wiggling it out. That seemed to work and after about only the 5th use the usb end of the charger came apart and part of it was actually still stuck in the phone. Well of course I almost **** my pants because that's obviously not a good thing. I did get it out of the TB with no damage done to it, but now I'm confused as to why it's so much trouble to remove the charger from the micro-usb port. I see that it has 2 little hooks on the end and I don't see any release to push in as I'm unplugging, so what am I doing wrong? I read all the rave reviews on here and Amazon both about how well the charger works, specifically for the TB. The weird part is that I don't see anyone mention having this problem, can someone help me out here? I'll attach a pic of the charger just so we're on the same page here.

Niiice!! someone had to say it...
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
Yeah I don't know what the deal is. I tried it in my Nook Color when I still had it and there was no problem at all. So that would make me think it was the TB somehow, BUT... any other micro-usb I have ever tried in the TB has ever done this. I guess I just got a defective charger, I think I'm gonna try Amazon this time and just get another. Who knows where the ebay one came from. But the weird part is the hooks on the micro-usb end, I swear I think those are not releasing like they should or something.

Right on well thanks for helping me out with your generous donation for replacement part thus making others aware of this flaw.
This would explain why some have loose connections and other don't , Sammy was running low on ribbons and packed some of are toys with junk usb part.
For those that need to replace part here is a great how to video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT-2zrZ_aNo
Another find updating Charging Port & Mic ribbon.
Speaker level is higher better sound quality is had no more garble.
Why is that?
Speaker assembly connects to that board
A great find...
Many thanks for posting.

Its kind of the norm though with many device manufactures , They run low on parts and quality control goes out the window for the most part on 1st batch release.
Blackberry holds records on new release returns....The sprint 9630 for example lol

Nylon USB Cables

Hi,
My Samsung and apple usb chargers are absolute crap so I was looking at these new Nylon braided USB cables which are:
- at least 2x in length;
- much more durable;
- boast that they charge and sync at 2.4A which is significantly higher than the stock samsung and apple chargers.
Pretty sure you can buy reversible and micro USB cables also.
Has anyone had experience with these?
Here's an example product I found which seems great in value and holds the above specs:

my Samsung and apple usb chargers are absolute crap
I use a samsung 2 Amp charger, which has a usb socket in it – for charging my table and/or mobile phone. What do you mean crap? I haven't had one fail, and works as expected. So is this thread relating to the charger itself? Or relating to usb cables? For my charger, the charger has a usb socket – so you could put whatever kind of cable you want on it.
DO ...NOT ...BUY
I have had several ...
1. The contact is poorly molded. The micro-usb contact will soon pop out of the mold and break off.
2. The sleeve does nothing at all. It just looks cool.. the poor way the cable and contacts is molded it does not make the cable stronger.
3. Even how much the information emphasize that the cable can transfer more amperes this is not the case... All sleeve kind of usb cables I have had stalled at about 450mAh.
The best cables are the one that is not fitted with "bling bling" all around or brag about its quality.
I recommend you to instead buy a classic cable http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5458&seq=1&format=2
This has:
Ferrite Core. Most people doesn't know what this round brick around the cable does anyway..
28/24AWG ..you can bend it all you want. It won't break. Also allow for more current to pass.
Gold plated. Does nothing but looks good..it will scratch off after a month from inserting and removing.
Note: The cables from monoprice isn't something special. They are only a retailer. The cables are manufactured in china.
It is a very nice usb cable. I had it for days and still works great.

charging board flex fix

if you're looking for charging port fix, here is a small tip i hope could help you..
you can read all the thread or just jump to bottom line
my charging port stopped working after about 3 months of usage.
this was very frustrating, and didn't happen at once. at first i had to put the charging cable in certain direction, and later on i had to put some leverage on that direction, until eventually i couldn't charge at all.
it is known that this phone is one of the hardest to open, and once you put it on the "surgical table" it's hard to finish the job without "scars" , so i do understand those of you who chooses repair stores over fixing adventures. on the other hand, at least in my country, HTC repair cost so much that you ought to think about other options.
So then my tip is for those of you who have the willing and repair equipment.
You'd probably look for replacement charging board, which indeed are very cheap, and then just check out one of the many tear-down youtube videos explaining how to open the phone and replace the port.
i chose to fix the exist port instead.
to be honest, i also bought replacement. but not only it got damaged, i've found out after opening the phone that there are the two different boards for 32G/16G versions. so instead of buying another part, and waiting another month or so until arrival, i figured i can try and check out what went wrong with the current one.
i did use lab microscope to find out the problem, but there weren't many suspects to begin with.
turns out for 3 out of the 5 micro USB pins (the middle 3) - the connection to the board got broken.

so i just used friend help and soldered the 5, and voilà, phone charging again..
note that -
1. the pins were barely soldered to the board. very little amount of tin
2. I've checked my USB cables and it does look like the metal connector length differ in sizes from one to another. even if not by much, it's clearly visible. so it's very likely that inserting a cable with long connector time after time just broke the connection.
bottom line,
if your charging port malfunctions, and you happen to have soldering equipment, or a friend who does, just carefully solder/strengthen exist soldering of the 5 USB pins to the charging board.
i guess you can even take the board and ask for any electronic repair shop just to solder those. will cost much less than expert store repair

Strange behavior after connect USBC cable or car charger on A50

Hello everyone,
I just discovered that my wife's Samsung Galaxy A50 with brand from Orange Poland is very strange phone and probably have something wrong.
Found two issues with him:
Connect in car: after connect to car charger [key car is disconnected] it's power on radio and other devices in car [for example dash cam],
Connect to PC: direct connect by good quality USB-C <--> USB-C don't work - device it's not discovered by PC, or even loading
I also have a second A50, but without brand from mobile operator, and old A8-2018 and both those phones don't do this - don't power car electricity and are visible by PC on USB-C <--> USB-C connection.
What I did so far - was:
factory reset
download last firmware from SamMobile for Orange and apply it
clean up USB-C port in device
Unfortunately non of above don't fix issues.
What is working on her phone:
Device is loading by ac adapter
Device is also discovered by PC when connect by USB --> USB-C cable
I'm downloading from SamMobile image without brand - and will check it afternoon, but maybe someone from you was have those issues like this?
I'm can't attaching picture with cleaned USB-C ports on both devices and videos what this behavior look like because - I'm to new on forum
Did you checked which device control the other? I mean, there is an option, and maybe your phone is trying to control your car's computer.
My opinion about the PC issues is, maybe try the original cable, or type c <->type a, or other computer.
Sorry for poor english, and if I am wrong.
Use Your Samsung warranty and go to Samsung center in Poland for free diagnose. You can get hour appointment by call to choosen samsung Center. I think that You usb charger module in phone can be damaged. Typical Samsung diecease.
Thanks for responses. I was today on Samsung store and they take it for diagnose. I'm little aftraid only that this isssue is not so obvious and could be hard to find.
