Factory reset Moto g6 play while rooted. - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

Hi can anyone please help me, I want to factory reset the phone, but I have magisk and twrp installed. Will it result in a bootloop if it is rooted, or do I need to uninstall magisk or something first? Thank you.

Best bet is to just reflash the stock firmware which those instructions are at the bottom of my guide.

You can factory reset while rooted. I do it after debloating to get rid of extra junk left behind from apps. Magisk will just reinstall itself afterwards. Additionally, magisk will also reinstall itself after flashing GSIs if you keep the same boot.img.

Why didn't mine go back to rooted after a reset??

I honestly have no clue. Usually if I'm using a boot.img that's already rooted, magisk shows up in my app drawer as a stub. Upon opening it, it'll download some files and reroot the OS. Sometimes it doesn't happen on GSIs for me. It might be dependent on the magisk version. I use 19.3.

With the new version of magisk, you have to re install magisk manager.

How Can Install Montly Updates without loose Root and Custom Recovery

Hi dudes! Im trying to find a way to install Monthly Updates without loose the root and the custom recovery, some body can tell me how? Because im really want update to Oreo but i want be root user and dont have to make a clean install system every month... exist the way? Please help.... And Thanks!
What I do is flash all the updated partition images individually using "fastboot flash", then let it boot and settle for a few minutes (at the very least until the "performing updates" notification completes).
I then reboot into bootloader and from there boot into TWRP (without installing it) using "fastboot boot twrp.img" and then reinstall Magisk zip. None of Magisk's settings or modules are lost by doing it this way.
If you uninstall Magisk before updating the system, you risk losing its settings.
You can use Flashfire.

Now it is competible with magisk and if you want magisk instead of supersu on installation process you can disabel the installation of supersu and ad magisk to flash afterwards. you can also use the factory images or full ota zips from googles website.
Yes, you can use TWRP's "Advanced" adb sideload feature to install Magisk zip.
"adb" only works when Android is running (or some recovery images are running). When the phone is in bootloader mode the tool you need is "fastboot".

Magisk embeds itself in the boot partition. This prevents OTA from working.
Replacing the stock recovery partition also stops OTA from working.
The only reliable way to upgrade is by flashing the partitions again from the new factory image zip file, then reinstalling TWRP and Magisk afterwards.

Sounds logic to me....
FlashFire is saying that the update will likely fail because the OTA update is a block level update. Suggestions on how to get around this?

How to _clean_ flash an update on a rooted OP5T without losing root or TWRP recovery

Hi all,
Good news is I get the "how to root" stuff. But one aspect remains a bit unclear.
I did search but I didn't find a clear answer. If I would clean flash a full update (signed flashable zip), do you loose TWRP and root?
If yes, is the only option to reinstall TWRP-recovery and reroot?
kr,
Jeroen
You wouldn't lose TWRP, but root might give you problems depending on what method you used to root.
Best to do a full unroot, flash update, then re-root.

Method would be just flashing Su or Magisk from TWRP. A full unroot is the same as a clean flash I suppose?
Both SuperSU and Magisk have uninstall methods. I think Magisk has an uninstall zip you can flash.

Okay, so I had TWRP installed and no Magisk. I took the OTA through System Update screen...
I lost TWRP and gained stock recovery back. Everything else went fine. So I guess system update wipes TWRP! Oh, well. Easy fix.
Wait for OTA updates this is normal. You need full ROM flashable zips. For the 5 there was a topic in which they got posted. Don't know yet for the 5T. But as you say rerooting is hardly a chore

From the heck of it today I tried uninstalling magisk by flashing the uninstaller in twrp and through magisk manager in system. After both methods my phone wouldn't get past the OnePlus splash screen.
How can you get phone to boot after unrooting and restoring the stock boot image through Magisk?

Hmm, that is interesting. Try taking the OTA zip using the official method (but use TWRP file manager to move it in place).
Or just flash official system image. You can get it from this forum.
Losing TWRP
Help! Trying to install twrp. Able to flash, but after reboot, phone reverts back to original recovery. Also, while in twrp- was not able to do anything... Figure something to do with encryption? In twrp formatted data, then was able to back up... Thought it fixed the problem, but still reverting back to original.
Thanks.

Magisk and Magisk Modules

I have Magisk installed and decided to try out some of the modules for it but could never get them to update it said on all that they would update on next reboot, well after several reboots nothing. I clicked on the little garbage can to delete and they wouldn't delete?? I ended up having to uninstall magisk to get rid of them and had to reinstall magisk to get root back.. Any one else have any problems with the modules??

I had a similar problem. It took multiple reinstalls of magisk to get it working, hang in there you'll get it working. That's just one of the issues with how this phone handles many different things. T-Mobile has had to issue updates to fix updates and that has potential to turn people away from an otherwise great piece of hardware. Hang in there you'll figure this phone out.

Out of curiosity, did you go through the full TWRP installation, or just use it to boot and install Magisk?

Help With Twrp+Root

Hey guys n gals
Smashed my s8+ the other day accidentally so picked up a z2 play for something completely different for me, but I am having issues with recovery and then root..
I've unlocked the bootloader that was simple, my problem first starts with doing Twrp, I flash it, boot up, then instantly prompted with the password for decryption. From what I read on the post for installing Twrp that should come after? My data partition vanishes and I think I changed it to ext4 so it worked, phone booted and all was well, so I went to do magisk 16 (I'm running stock 8.0) flash it all is well then when I boot up the phone just boots, shows the unlocked bootloader message, then keeps doing that and sometimes it boots to recovery randomly..
Not sure if I've missed something when doing thel processes but followed the instructions to the letter and I always end up having to reinstall stock and start fresh. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Saome time the Magisk make you a bootloop. try to uninstall it.

Fix Bootloop after Magisk Install

I followed a guide to unlock and root my Huawei Mate SE, BND-L34C567b130, EMUI version 5.1, Android version 7.0. I installed Magisk in TWRP and then No Verity in TWRP. I'm guessin that no verity is what is causing the bootloop because apparently you don't need it anymore? If not I don't know why it is boot looping but reinstalling Magisk via Twrp is not working. What can I do? I can get into Fastboot and I cant get into TWRP, my boot loader is unlocked and I do have my unlock code. Or maybe thats not what is the cause but what ever the case I need to fix this bootloop.
Have you tried installing Magisk again after installing no verify to repackage boot?

Yes I tried installing magisk after and before no verify and both cause the bootloop.

I would try a factory reset since no verify would have wiped data anyways.

I was going to say TWRP reset. There are instructions somewhere on this page (posed recently from what I remember) for getting back to factory recovery (where you should be able to factory reset), but I have never done it.

OK sorry it's been a while since I've checked xda to save people. I have the Huawei Mate SE the equivalent of the Honor 7x but with more storage. You installed everything correctly and did nothing wrong. The a few of the latest versions of Magisk bootloop our device. Use the Magisk 18 and you should be fine.
