New Member In The Family - Nokia 8.1 Questions & Answers

Hi, I just switched from Poco F1 to Nokia 8.1 yesterday. Previously I had a Nokia 7 plus and I loved the build quality. Even though it had GG3, I never used any screen protector and didn't get a single scratch in my 3 months usage. I heard Nokia 8.1 doesn't come with GG. Rather, they are using some unknown screen protection. Is it as good as Corning? I hate using an additional layer on top of the screen. Also, if someone can tell me a few tips and tricks about the device. Already installed San1ty's GCAM that I used on my Poco F1 (and it's working great).

Hi, welcome to Nokia 8.1. I can currently only wish that you get a Poco-like experience. The build quality would have already made a mark, I'm sure. The software might not stand the same benchmarks because it is generally too limited. That depends on how you use your phone though.
As for the protection, the latest Gorilla glass has been prone to scratches and that has been reported widely on the internet. The same is for the protection used on the Nokia 8.1. It does scratch, but maybe that's because I'm in India and there's enough dust and fine sand particles in the air. I'd highly recommend protection and since tempered glass and curved screens don't work well, I'll recommend a TPU based good quality protector. I'm using it after breaking 4 glass protectors and now I am happy [emoji108]
One tip that I have is to charge it with screen turned off, if you want to charge it faster. QC3 doesn't work on this device with display on.

Is the screen protector available online? Can you send me the link? I just need something to protect my device against scratch. Hence, I don't really need a tempered glass. Infact, I hate TG.

This phone is bad, really bad. This is a shame for Huawei to do this with glass. DO NOT BUY IT! Scratches at level 3/4 WTF?!

I got my phone for 200 bucks so what i'm saying next is with the price in mind:
To be honest, with the included cover the scratch issue is not that big of a deal
The bend test is an over kill. just don't sit on your phone.
This phone rocks for the price. (I'll say better than my galaxy s7) The only thing i miss is the faster lens on the s7.
The people who take JerryRigEverything's "durability tests" seriously are simply put, dumb. The videos he make are for pure entertainment purpose. Who lights up their phone's screen with a lighter? Are there still people who wouldn't protect their screen with a protector anyway? And seriously who the heck tries to bend their phone in half even if you're a rough user. Dumbness is taking over the people.
I own Honor 6X from about a month, I have about 10 hours SoT daily on my phone. With that kinda usage, I have 0 scratches so on my screen or back so far. And of course no freakin "bends" like it's a metal ruler lol.

There's no excuse for the s-h-i-tty glass used on the Honor 6x. None of the 50 phones he tested had the glass scratch at level 3 or 4. While I somewhat agree with the bending thing, the glass they used on this phone is pure crap.

It's not really about buying a screen protector or not. It's about the inferior quality of the glass Huawei chose to use on this device. It's the worst ever tested out of 50 phones and it's worse than last years 5x. I literally have a drawer full of phones and this is the first test that actually persuaded me to go out and buy a tempered glass screen protector. I never have felt the need before and the screens on all of my devices are still pristine.

Lol mate, you're taking JerryRig's stupid (meant for fun) durability tests way too seriously. His tests are not equivalent to day-to-day usage.
Fair point ?

AGREE I DON'T TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY TOO.
But, you need to admit the fact that what ever be the day to day use of a device
there is that one day where things are not in your favor and S#!t Happens.
So, understanding the worst case scenario is not a crime but a reminder what you should expect rather.
CONSIDER:
In my **** day i accidentally drop my phone on the street while getting of a bus in INDIA and a car runs over it
now since JERRY DOES A BEND TEST BOTH THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE PHONE you will have an idea of what kind of damage you should be expecting and
if you should dive in to push your phone away
or
let it be it can handle a car running over it
and
i can get it back with no problem

Why argue and waste time rather lets just ask "jerry rigs everything" to throw a google pixel and an Honor 6x under a car. Or lets do it by ourselves but someone will will need to sponsor you to get a free phone to break so yeah we cant pretty much do that can we. HONOR aint sending us a free phone anytime soon so lets see what people do when they get a free one like jerry who practically breaks the phone.
THEN WHY DO I WANT THIS ARGUMENT TO CONTINUE ?
Because my SAMSUNG E500H could manage drops like i dropped it while trying to get a clear snapchat post in a DJ snake concert it practically was being run over by people but it survived with a crack on the digitizer and leaving the LCD un harmed.
Now my HTC 526g+ that had a crappy but decent tempered glass on broke in a simple fall when i missed my pockets and drooped the phone in the METRO.
I have been a person with slippery hands when it comes to phones so it helps me know
like if i got an IPHONE 4s ill cover it in a pillow
if its an OBI WORLDPHONE i will first recollect when was Android 4.4.4 awesome and re-evaluate life's decisions.
if its an honor 6x ill buy a higher quality TEMPERED GLASS and a decent quality PROTECTIVE CASE.
( METAL BODY ALLOWS FOR SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE INTAKE ).
if it is an GOOGLE PIXEL then i can call F U C K IT and throw it screen side down under a car phones internal will be safe but screen might break.

Im not sure if you are trolling or serious. Let me tell you something, a phone dropped is not similar to a car running it over. Also ive had 4 phones since the last 5 years, first was a blackberry which screen cracked from a simple fall on the street. Second was my galaxy s3 which is still in good condition despite it falling over a million times, and not to mention i still use it from time to time until this day. My newer galaxy s6 which i had a case and a tampered glass protector got its screen fully broken when it fell less than a meter high. Should we now say that samsung flagship device is really good quality (ex s3) or very bad (ex s6)? The truth is its all about how the phone fell, the angle, the type of surface there are too many variables. Now im using my honor 6x without any cover and it is still as brand new. Even though it fell maybe 2 times it still doesnt have a scratch. So chill with these videos they are nothing scientific and only for entertainment

Wouldn't that leave a giant variable for people who want to solve problems related to the exact matter if i consider the angle surface, ETC on which my phone drops and breaks.
I can only test my phone by droping it from a height and then fixing problems right and if we do this process over and over again we get a durable phone right.
SADLY, companies cannot spend that much on just making test models and break them over and over again to make a durable phone that costs more than a kidney
ALSO
Droping an object is not a standardized test and cannot be repeated without minimum human error.

How sturdy is the Moto Z play?

Hi users of Moto Z Play,
I just bought the phone (to be delivered tomorrow).
It seems like a decent phone with a lot of the features that I want. Reviews also seem decent, except that I couldn't find a drop test video.
Since I drop my phone quite frequently from the desk level or hand level, I wanted to know - should I be worried about cracking my phone's screen / destroying the phone itself?
I have been using the Moto G3 so far and am VERY happy with its survival - barring a few small dents to the body, it has taken all the maltreatment I have meted out with staggering grace.

Luckily, I haven't had any such encounters with my moto z play but before I bought mzp I thoroughly researched about sturdiness of thr phone, how company handles warranties etc.
Let me tell you that I use my phone bare, with no screen gaurds, and I hate phone covers to the core. When I added mzp to my online cart, I also added a good screen guard protector and an armored back cover for my phone because every damn review site clearly told that screen is very fragile. One of them had his review unit damaged when he dropped his phone from table.

Kapa defender armour case and tarkan shatterproof tempered ,ordered off th Amazon.
Sent from heart, typed on Moto z play
No matter how sturdy, this is a glass phone, having gorilla 4 front and back. But it also depends on the impact point, if you are unlucky the glass will break in a small fall also. So if you are not carefull with handling, i suggest a normal case rubber one which has lip for camera and on the front to protect the display, and no need of screen gaurd or tempered glass.
I understand, but is the phone sturdy overall - compared to solid phones like Moto G3 or the Lumia series of old times?

I have owned Motorola now Lenovo phones since the flip phone era and from my experience they are very durable, well built phones.
I purchased the Moto Z Play Droid xt1635-01 (Verizon variant) several days ago and I really like this phone. Phone came with Marshmallow 6.0.1 preinstalled but shortly after I powered it up I got the Nougat update OTA along with two separate security updates.
Whils I am not one to frequently drop my phone, I do install a screen protector and a case on all of my phones, just for extra protection. On my Moto Z Play I have an Incipio dual layer dual pro case (from Amazon) and a Zagg tempered glass screen protector. (from Verizon) They both work very well on this phone.
Since you mentioned that you frequently drop your phone, I would advise you to get a case and a screen protector to put on it.

Giving OnePlus one last shot. A few queries for you guys if you will.

Due to their "generous" 15 day return policy. ive decided to buy a Op5t 8gb black version. After being so frustrated with my OP5 I'm going to try the latest and greatest from OnePlus and see if it improves what i want the most from a smartphone. Some damn reception.
So I strongly beleive my OP5 has faulty antennae bands. One speed test I will have a 50mbps download 30 upload then the next test just seconds after will be .23mbps down and 0.01 upload. I have the feeling they short out or something. So i grabbed a friend who is on tmobile and asked him to constantly test alongside me to see if it was the area not just the phone. He constantly tested 50MBPS or better while i shifted from good to god awful. His dBm signal was always significantly better as well.
With that laid out I have questions about this device.
1. How's the telephony of this guy? Good reception? good signal? Are your data speeds always nearly capped out or as high as possible in peak times?
2. Is the battery good? I see the screen consumes some more energy than the 5 does mainly because it is larger. But is it really noticeably decreased?
3. Is the face unlock secure after all? It seems a bit too fast for its own good but does that actually mean it is secure in the end?
4. Are there wifi issues like the 5 had?
5. How is the camera upgrade? Is it really good, or just a "meh" upgrade? Or is it an upgrade at all?
Lastly: Might be my own experience, but I've never cracked a phone screen before but my OP5 is cracked and scratched to hell. I never set it down and I dont have diamonds in my pockets. Is this glass panel strong? Can it stand not having a case?
Overall Good Experience
First Oneplus phone for me, I came from the nexus line up(love stock android).
1) Haven't heard any complaints from the person I'm speaking to. No complaints on my side either (T-Mobile)
2) I can sometimes get a day and a half if its light use( some texts and calls), medium use I'll probably have ~20% battery left by the end of my day. Dash charge is amazing
3) If I close my eyes or 1 eye it won't unlock, only tried 1 picture of me and it didn't unlock, and it seems like it has to have vision of at least half of your face.
You don't have to use face unlock if you don't trust it.
4) No 4g/wifi problems so far, I ran a few speed test I consistently got around 35-40 Mb (Wifi)
5) No sorry no experience with the 5, I don't pictures often, but not problem with the pictures so far.
The 5t comes with a plastic screen protector on already and a translucent case.
Hope I helped.
Thanks for the input. I was leaning toward the pixel 2 or the xperia xz1 compact. I kinda wanted a smaller phone but i had a coupon for the op5t and i felt like i should try it and return it if i dont like it. Im used to oneplus devices anf enjoy their features but on every oneplus device ive had the cell radio is pathetic. Budget phones get better signal than mine in the same area.

sadly yes. Im really not a fan of the glass on this thing. I removed that plastic after the first week when it got enough fingernail scratches on it.

Wups, completely missed that part - my bad.
I also pulled off mine directly as it seems, I kept it in the box. Excitement killed my memory apparently.

Is it worth buying now (October 2018)?

Hey,
I'm looking for a new smartphone within 25k INR price budget.
Mix 2 is available for 23k rn and I wonder whether it would be a good idea to buy it or not? I want a daily driver for 2-3 years of use.
I'm a power user ( so gaming/perf, camera, sound, battery are important) and I keep my phones rooted so year old softwares isn't my concern if there are Oreo/Pie ROMs available.
I really like the design of the device, 6GB + 128GB is another benefit.
My doubts are about:-
1. Front Camera placement (is there any othwr way except rotating your phone around for selfies )
2. No headphone jack : This one seems most troublesome, but does the 3.5toTypeC adaptor solves that completely?
My other options are Asus Zenfone 5Z, Realme 2 Pro, Moto One Power or Nokia 7.1 Plus
Any help is greatly appreciated.
TIA
I highly recommend this phone, I upgraded to this from a MI5s and I'm very impressed by the screen and the battery life. If you take a lot of selfies it can be annoying to have to turn the phone around, but it's not really a big deal. If you try to take a selfie without turning it then you get a lot of chin in the pic, not a good angle! The USB C to 3.5mm adaptor works great, I've barely noticed the lack of headphone jack. Just leave the adaptor connected to your headphones and you won't even notice. The one downside to this over my previous phone is the glass, it seems to scratch very easily (I guess it isn't gorilla glass) and if you try to use a screen protector it looks bad because you can't have it go all the way to the edge (it is slightly curved around the edges). In a year's time I think the scratches will be quite obvious so keep that in mind.

That's very interesting, I wonder if there is a way to remove that layer? It seems to pick up more fingerprints than my previous phone's too so I'm not really sure of the point of it.
The power difference between the mix 2 and the pocophone isn't going to be very noticeable unless you're playing intensive games, plus there's no notch on the mix 2 which is a huge bonus imo.
yes it is.got mine yesterday for 237 euros, global version brand new
The phone is WAY more impressive in real life than what you see on videos.
835 is still a beast.
I got mine last week. Also from eglobal. I'm super impressed with the phone. For 237euro this is a major beast.

The phone is WAY more impressive in real life than what you see on videos.
835 is still a beast.

I Have just ordered one from eGlobal the global edition 64gb 6gb ram, can you tell me does the phone come with a free case in the box ?
Also is there an screen protector fitted to the phone ?
Does the usb to audio adapter work for making calls etc? allowing use with regular none MI product headphones ?
It came indeed with a case. No screen protector. I've not used the dongle so i can't tell.

Thank you for your reply, did you order a screen protector? If so do you have a link or one that is recommended to use?
This is the one I ordered. 5D Full Protective Glass for Xiaomi MI MIX 2 6 8 SE 6X A1 A2 lite Redmi Note 4X 4 5 6 Pro 5A Prime 6A Screen Protector Film
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/X3AIXHq
Brilliant looks good, I usually use PayPal for purchases from China , did you use credit card is it secure payment wise ?
Does the screen protector work along side a case ? Or would a case perhaps push off the screen protector?
Mine came with applied screenprotector and hardcase.
I have the global Version 64gb
Excellent , I am hoping for that it would come with a basic one applied already , I tend to just never remove the factory fitted screen protector if it is clear .

read above, there is no screen protector unless it was a box that was opened from the shop.
Mine from eglobal was sealed with no screen protector
The Screenprotektor was already attached to my mix2.
I had to remove a thin Foil
Advice please, my mi mix 2 arrived today.....but the factory fitted screen protector appears to have a strong blue tint (or similar colour) to it , is that correct ? or shoud it be completely clear ?
Mine came without screenprotector

About to join as RN8P owner, seek advices

Hello guys, Indonesian here
My RN8P is coming, unfortunately I can only get 6/64 version because how fierce today flash sale ( only 280 units 6/128 and 2800 units 6/64 in stock). I root and flash lots of phone before but probably not for this one yet after read how risky currently atm.
How can I optimize my begonia without ubl for now?
1. remove bloats with adb, it's mostly safe right?
2. Install blo*ada, do I need one if I removes bloats and use ublock origin?
3. Buy microSD, 128 GB class 10 is enough for FHD recording? or do I need U3 / V30 etc, they are EXPENSIVE here, make me cry because I cant get 6/128 version.
4. Put tempered glass and soak whole body with "nano liquid" coating, also put camera metal ring to protect it from scratch. I hate idea using case phone.
5. Others?
Thanks in advances
Hello, Indonesian too here
Got Redmi Note 8 Pro 6/128 Grey from 11/11 flash sale for Rp 3.4 Million, Regarding your questions. I can answer some of them.
1. For FHD recording, you should atleast get U3 MicroSD, you can get 128GB Sandisk ultra for 150-200k at Tokop****.
2. For tempered glass, I reccomend Nillkin CP+Pro / CP+Max. It comes with built in Oleophobic coating and feels just like the Original Gorilla Glass 5.
3. You shouldn't coat the phone with Oleophobic coating, because it already has a glass back which already has some Coating on it, water won't stick to it.
4. For the camera scratching, I would agree. It will scratch up the part below Fingerprint area if you don't use any cases. You should get third party cases, the one that comes in the box was bad. But if you hate cases, maybe you can try skins.
If you have any further questions, I would love to reply to them.

Hello there lucky fellow
1. Sandisk ultra ori class 10 is rp 190rb, U1 is rp 215rb, U3 at those prices mostlikely FAKE
2. Agreed about this one but nikilin got black border and I dont like it
3. Its crystal nano coating, claim to create very thin (0.02mm) 9h hardness gilm on any glass surfaces not just simply oleophobic coating, and last 6 month~2years as scratch resistant layer, gorilla glass body is a type of glass right?
4. Case, skin, defeat premium body looks and insulate heat, rejected, google metal ring camera for rn8pro, it cost rp 15rb add, 1.5 mm space so glass lens wont touching floor/ desk under normal condition.
How about b*okada? It's sort of internal proxy, how much it drain resources?

Mine is on the way too and i too have some of these questions myself. I was initially planning on buying the 8/256 version but for some reason it's not available anywhere. So i had to stick with the 6/128 version. I'm planning on using my 128GB Class 10 card in the device for storage only. But Class 10 is the recommended speed class for FHD video so i guess you'll be fine with that. Not sure about 4K 30FPS mode tho because the minimal bitrate for a 30FPS 4K video is 100MBpS on the dot. You should look into investing on a UHS 3 card if you have plans to use that.
Regarding the bloatware, i think there is a good chance custom ROMs will pop up for this phone for a change. I've been following development on this phone for about 2 weeks for pre-purchase research and i have to say it's looking rather promising for a mediatek device. I think your best bet is to wait it out patiently until a good ROM is released instead of messing with MIUI.
I also want to know about adblockers that work on this device. I use AdAway in all three of my current devices and i would like to use that in this one too. If anyone knows how it works on this device, let me know.
I'm going to say i will use the provided case with the phone despite the fact that i hate to not show off how beautifully built it is. Better safe than sorry. Though i only bought an off the shelf cheap-ass tempered glass for now. And i think the metal ring for the camera bump makes the phone even more wobbly than it already is.. Besides it looks nasty so i won't be using that.
For the things i want to know about the device, there are a list of specific Magisk modules i use on all my devices. That includes Viper, AdAway and Vanced. I know Vanced works after someone confirmed it. Same person confirmed that Viper doesn't work even if the newest version flashes fine. A custom kernel with audio mod support has to be released in order for Viper to work... Who knows when that'll be..

1. Or you can get 64GB Sandisk Extreme, meh
2. Nillkin also has Tempered glass without black border. check the Amazing H+. Should be the same, but without the border, also somewhat cheaper than the CP.
3. Just becareful not to get the coating on earphones holes etc. Also becareful using some sort of coating, try it out on small surface of glass first and make sure the coating doesn't ruin the glass.
4. I would agree with you, external protections ruin the design. But the glass on the back is really slippery and since the frame of Redmi Note 8 Pro is Polycarbonate (Basically plastic). the Polycarbonate frame probably won't survive a drop.
Also an extra tip. When you are setting up the phone, set your country to "United Kingdom" for no ads.
