x86 and Android boards forum request - About xda-developers.com

Would like to see a forum added that is for boards and PC's and laptops instead of just phones.
Something for Odroid, Odo, Raspberi Pi, x86, etc.

To be honest... This forum is primarily Android specific but, this doesn't mean that they haven't tried to help accommodate the PC's and Laptops in some way.
Currently the following thread is dedicated to the PC/LPTP's.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765837
The following area of the forum is also provided for them as well too. Though it's more Hardware than Software related but, Software discussions are not restricted either.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pc-hardware
This is about the best guidance I can provide you, personally, at the moment.
Maybe someone else can provide a bit more information here as well...
Good Luck!

Unless asked to do so, PLEASE don't PM me regarding support. Sent using The ClaRetoX Forum App on my Apple Macintosh.

Raspberry Pi has an own dedicated but not very active device forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/raspberry-pi
And did you just once scrolled through https://forum.xda-developers.com/. Before you reach the device fora when scrolling down there're quite a few non-device related fora like "Windows 10 Development and Hacking" (just as one example).

Upcoming Android Device News on the Portal

I understand that this is a developer site and that the portal page is meant to display news for developers or about accomplishments made by developers (developer related news) but why so few updates on upcoming devices? Seems to me that XDA could easily be covering most of the stuff that engadget reports. Just that this is the only thing stopping XDA from being a one stop shop for anything Android related for me. Thoughts?
Lets remember we are not an Android only forum.
News Writers team is focused to bring the best of development inside XDA, but we include some information regarding new devices as well.
In General section you´ll find the hottest info on the latest out there.
Thanks for your suggestion tough, if you read a nice story while surfing XDA please PM us.
This is and always will be a site for developers, pure and simple. Without them we are nothing, without them there would be no reason for XDA Developers to exist; we should never ever forget that. Without them this place would not be called XDA-Developers but something else, e.g Mobile Phone User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds.
XDA is about developing and is for developers. Any user that recognises that will gain the most benefit from this site.

I understand that. While I would be looking for Android device news I'd also expect there to be Windows mobile and iPhone news as well. It just seems that these news pieces are sometimes as vital to developers as any other news that is published and as you said most of it can already be found somewhere on the forums so it just seems intuitive to publish more of it on the Portal to allow easier access to the information. I certainly see your point, I was just curious.
Developers want to see code. I close the portal tab if i see noobish stuff like "omg omg the new htc xyz is out. Many other devs do the same.
Had it been a dump of firmware for it, that's interesting
But the announcement of yet another sub standard handset is barely newsworthy... I mean, the new WP7 phones are not even dual core

[REQUEST] My Devices additions

First of all I'd like to say thanks for adding the option to list our devices on our profile without having to use our signatures.
Now, onto the request. While adding my devices, I tested it to see if I could add a device which doesn't have a forum on XDA. (Even though I don't have the device, I tried to add the Micromax Canvas HD and it wouldn't add it purely because there's no for it here for it.) So, would it be possible to add devices which also don't have a forum on here?
I guess @svetius would be the best person to ask
+1 & Good catch. :good:

We're still deciding if want to do this. If we allow a wildcard, people can put whatever they want in there, even profanity, etc. So...file under "maybe". :victory:

I don't believe that would really be a big problem though because even though there's an obvious chance it could happen, the same could be said for Location but, from what I've seen, the most people use it for is Likes and Dislikes.
A way around it could be a database of all devices (both on and off XDA) and only allow what's on that list. Basically an extension of the current system. I realise it would be a lot if work to keep such a list updated though as lots of devices are churned out by lesser known manufacturers.

I hate to be a bother @svetius...
I had seen a recent question from another member regarding this topic and saw this thread after performing a quick search.
Though this thread is a bit older, I was just curious as to any decisions made regarding this (or maybe @MikeChannon might have some information regarding this as well).
Thank you very much!

Haha, yes, I think we can say 5/6 years later it was decided not to add the ability to add a device that's not got a set of forums officially listed here. Aside from it being a way to state what devices you have it was also meant as a way to link other users to our other internal forums. The ability for folk (and there are always some) to abuse a system that allows wildcards was and is a concern too.

Serpatre forum for NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV

How about creating serpatre forum for NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV
+1 infinite
Every one here (Both original Shield Hand-held owners, and Shield Android TV owners) should post the the forum request thread (Link below).
I posted again today with a slightly stronger-worded post.
Note that the Handheld owners/users should post too -- To get us (Shield Android TV users) off your forum.

This is still by far better than nothing. And you CAN post links to your ROM here right. Devdb would be great but you should be happy for even getting a repo like this. I agree, it still not top notch but at least there is a tiny bit organization.

I am by all means happy that this is here, but at the same time, I still want a real forum going.
Most of the posts that got put in here are 1 post long, and the relevant post about rooting and the more active posts did not get put in here...
Example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nvidia-shield/general/shield-android-tv-rooted-t3123197
We now have a rom for the Shield TV and no forum.

Oh where can you get the rom?
At least now you can type in the find device box and actually find everything related to the shield tv. Not exactly a separate forum though. I'm thinking it will get sorted out soon.
I'm in favor of this... the shield tv is pretty much the most powerful android box on the market. Just because it uses an external monitor doesn't mean its not worthy of a separate forum...
The shield handheld and tablet both have their own forums,,,,
+1
I am getting this error trying to add 'Shield TV' to my list of gadgets...

Actually very unusual for XDA to not set up a "proper" forum for this. Before several phone (S6 for example) were even out they had the forums made properly. It's like they do not like Nvidia for some reason.
..
JJ-KwiK said:
I definitely agree. They post various explanations as to why a proper forum hasn't been made. However, when we try to open a dialog about the issue, they flat out ignore us (see HERE). They obviously don't want to open a complete forum for the device. It's too bad, because a ton of members would benefit from a proper forum with proper sub-forums in the proper section.
Edit:
They've posted a Nvidia Shield TV unboxing/review in the portal. I've added my comment there as well. Hopefully something will come of it (see HERE).

Their current most important argument against us is "In the threads, within this section, there have been a total of 215+/- posts. Not all that many.", as you have stated this is partially because our posts are scattered of different subsections. Perhaps we can try to keep them within this section? I suppose the amount of posts will increase as the device gains users anyway. Especially when the device becomes available on my side of the pond (imported mine). So I personally still have the hope a forum will be created in the future, we just have to keep on posting about this awesome device and matters will solve themselves.
TLDR: Keep posting in this forum about the NVIDIA Shield Android TV for WIN!
i can't even subscribe to this forum b/c it's not the same as other device forums. very frustrating.
nvm figured it out. but would still be nice to have an actual forum space with sub forums like other devices.
..
Just posted my request http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62196046#post62196046
.
Yet samsung s series from att and Verizon get their subforum for 2 years without any development and no root. Ghost town
Note 4 ?

How do I mitigate fragmented forum categories?

If I post about my problem in a device forum then I'll only get the audience for that device. Some devices only have a few hundred users. This makes xda kinda useless.
But xda is obviously far from useless.
What am i missing? Tags?
Is it that xdadevs tend to stick to very popular devices only?
IMHO, many devices are similar when running the same version of Android. Is it worth having separate forums?
Welcome to XDA @DontReuseUsernames!
It really depends on the information you are looking for. Questions can be very device specific, ie "Why doesn't my camera work?" to being generally applicable to Android "How do I do X with Google Camera App", and for each of these there are different forums to post in.
If all else fails, you can always post to the "General" forum, which is anything else: https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/general.256/
Thanks.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/c/xda-community-apps.3092/ is a useful new category I wasn't aware of.
Perhaps the problem could be improved by making it so that when you subscribe to one forum, you are automatically offered some related tags to subscribe to as well.

Hi, there is a thread at the very top of the about: xda-developers.com section that explains how xda works. If you have ANY questions that are Android related, you can post in Questions and Answers or Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting.
But again, everything is here: XDA New User Guide
Oh and, I also say hello to newcomers (originally iPhone newcomers) in this Post: Hello
Thank you. I'm always grateful. But I also need to tell it how it is and be honest about those beginners links.
Wow! What a mess. Broken image links. A link to a flash file. A 9 year old thread. Links to another thread that 'has been cleaned' and has only one reply ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/new-members-guide-tour-get-the-most-out-of-xda.1282679/ ) Again, more broken links there.
. Not a single mention of
XDA Community Apps
Download Android apps that come from XDA developers and members
forum.xda-developers.com
at either of the links that I've found so far.
Nothing addressing the issue of device fragmentation. Fragmented forums effect even the popular devices. It's just less obvious.
What needs doing is for us to re-index threads by keyword and make a new site linking through to helpful threads. I may well do this myself, depending on how much time I get off over the next holiday and how much I need the info myself. If I get some time to do it I'll update with a link here.

Introducing XDA Computing: Discussion for Hardware, Software, and more!

You might have noticed that recently, XDA has been publishing a lot of content around Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and other computing topics. This hasn’t been by mistake. We at XDA are really excited about Computing and today, we’re launching the XDA Computing Forums.
If you’re a technology enthusiast, XDA is a place that you can go to embrace whatever your passion might be. The new Computing forum is split into four categories: Build-a-PC, PC Peripherals, Hardware Tech Talk, and OS.
Build-a-PCIn the Build-a-PC section, you’ll find the Battlestations area. If you’ve got your own PC build and you want to show it off, head over there and strut your stuff. If you’re looking to build or upgrade, check out the PC part sales section. This is where you can talk about deals, or maybe discover a place to buy some hard-to-find parts.
Visit the Build-a-PC section in the XDA Computing Forums
PC PeripheralsOnce you’ve got your PC together, it’s time to talk about peripherals. We’ve got three topics in this section: Mechanical keyboards, Monitors, and Mice. If you’re looking for guides on mechanical keyboards, we’ve got you covered. Want to talk about monitors? You can do that too.
Visit the PC Peripherals section in the XDA Computing Forums
Hardware Tech TalkHardware Tech Talk is your place to go all-in on the brands that you’re enthusiastic about. You’ll find sections here that are dedicated to AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Apple. Head over here to find breakdowns on processors from Intel and AMD, or GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD. Or, just head over there to talk about what’s new.
Visit the Hardware Tech Talk section in the XDA Computing Forums
OSThis section is all about software. As you can probably guess, you’ll find sections for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can come here to discuss tips and tricks, troubleshoot common issues, or just discuss the latest from whatever operating system that you use.
Visit the OS section in the XDA Computing Forums
We’re pretty excited about the new XDA Computing forums, and we hope that you will be too. Check it out here.
Amazing new section!
