I normally avoid creating threads because the answer is usually out there, but I've been beating my head against a wall for weeks now and I'm at my wits end.
I have a HTC 10 on Unofficial LineageOS 16 which I upgraded from 14.1. Also running Magisk.
On 14.1, my tethering worked great. Same exact hardware, carrier, plan, SIM and everything only the upgrade to LOS 16, and now my tethering doesn't work.
I thought it was unique to my phone, but I realized my wife's Pixel on Official LineageOS 16 is doing the exact same thing.
The Wi-Fi Hotspot enables, and other devices can connect, but the connection shows no internet.
I've tried with other Android phones, tablets, windows and Ubuntu laptops... All with the same issue...
If I ping any website by domain name (eg google.com) the IP will resolve (so DNS seems to be OK) but there's never any response.
I can successfully ping the gateway (phone's) IP address though.
So far I've tried all the following (also several in combination) with no success:
- setting manual IP, gateway, mask and DNS from the client device (DNS of 8.8.8.8)
- Different bands (2.4 vs 5)
- WPA or unsecured
- Tethering via USB or Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi
- changing the APN to include DUN in all caps
- toggling tethering hardware acceleration in developer tools
- settings put global tether_dun_required 0
- set TTL to 64
- editing build.prop with net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
- messing around with route tables some
- resetting all network settings (lost my saved wifi networks for no reason)
- tethering_enabler Magisk package
- probably more stuff I'm forgetting right now...
So far nothing has worked.
It's very frustrating to lose all ability to tether, it was something I used quite often and sometimes need for work.
Does anyone have any ideas at all?

Hi!
I have exactly the same problem with LineageOS 17.1 on Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus! I had MIUI 10 installed before and everything worked fine, but with LineageOS my thetering doesn't work. Not over Wifi nor USB...
As you described I can connect other devices with the wifi from my phone, but they don't have internet access then. I can ping to external sites successfully but I'm not able to connect to any webside or any other internet service... Have you found any solution for this problem or does anyone know something about? I'm searching also now for a very long time but with no success...
Thanks in advance,
Drotak
I think straight talk was blocking it. I'm not sure if their way of blocking only worked for newer versions of Android or what.
Since this post, I've changed phones to a Google edition Pixel 2, which I unlocked but continued to run stock ROM with Magisk. I never could get tethering working on it, tried all the same things. The only thing that worked (kinda) was setting up VPN tethering, but it was very difficult and unreliable.
Finally I just gave in and bought the plan that includes tethering. Nothing I like more than buying data and then being told how to use it unless I pay more (sic)

Hi all
I'm having a terrible time getting my Touch Pro 2 to use my home WiFi.
When I first got the phone one week ago, it was a bit flakey on the WiFi but it did connect and was working for a couple of days. Then it disconnected and now it simply won't re-connect. I've tried rebooting the phone multiple times, including pulling the battery out, and I've also rebooted the access point.
My access point is a Linksys WRT54G.
It seems I can connect fine when the AP is set to unencrypted or WEP but not at all on WPA or WPA2. But of course I don't want to run without WPA - WEP is fatally broken.
I tried the WPA2 fix mentioned here but it did not seem to make any difference.
I go to the WiFi settings, I choose my access point and click Connect, choose "Connects to: Internet", then enter my key and try to connect. It sits at Connecting for a while then simply goes back to Available. Sometimes I get the dialog about being unable to connect due to an unknown issue.
I've tried both AES and TKIP settings in the Touch Pro 2. In my access point, when using WPA2 it says "TKIP+AES" is in use. For WPA I can choose either TKIP or AES on the AP, and I've tried both combined with both settings on the phone.
I'm also confused about why it worked for a couple of days but now does not. The only obvious I can think that has changed is that for hte first couple of days I was using my old Orange sim, then my PAC code transferred and I switched to my Vodafone sim. But I can't say for sure that that corresponds to when it stopped working nor does it make any sense for why it would affect this.
Any help much appreciated.
Tom
Which WRT54G version do you have? (version no. is on the underside of the router)
Which firmware are you running (some WRT54G versions can run on custom firmware) and are you running the latest firmware version?
Log into your router, go to Wireless > Advanced Wireless Settings and try a lower Basic Rates setting.
same.
I have the exact same router running WPA and my phone just keeps disconnecting from the network all the time... really anoying.
same here can only connect using wep.

It's version 1.1, and it is running the latest firmware - v 4.21.1 from 2007
Basic Rates was on Default, with the other valid settings being '1-2 MBps' and 'All', I tried both of those other settings, but it made no difference.
Here are my WRT54G wireless network settings for comparison
I suggest try using either TKIP or AES, but not TKIP+AES
Maybe you can the following...

That's worth a try too (though my TP2 without Advanced Config installed does not exhibit any WPA/WPA2 issue with my WRT54G, or any of my routers)
This has been posted before, but I have found no solution in the thread.
As a network backup if/when internet fails me, I need to use the evo 4g to serve as the host for my client bridge (netgear with dd-wrt).
I've been using the client bridge successfully to connect to my Linksys router across the apartment.
I have to have a hard wired connection for my voip phone I use for work.
I match all the encryption, channel, ssid, etc. as I do for my normal network, but when I try to change everything over to match the cmod hotspot (not the wireless tether app which I have nothing but trouble with), it never works. All wired connections get a 169 IP from the router.
Google says that it needs to be in infrastructure mode, and it appears cmod7 uses that. I've tried a vast amount of different ssids, encryption methods, rebooting, etc.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Does a different rom work better for this method, or do I need a different wifi app besides the one embedded in cmod7?

I don't think the router is giving you 169 IP addresses, those are a default random IP address that the Windows TCP/IP is assigning itself by default, that was useful back in the workgroup and hub days before the internet. I am researching this for future use, and will check back.
I was having some issues connecting to mobile hotspot with galaxy tab 3 7.0 wifi. It would connect just fine to my home internet. And although it would show a strong signal connection to the hotspot running off my phone it would not connect to the internet.
I found this post online and I just thought I would share here with the community in case anyone else is having issues. This worked for me.
I take no credit for this, just wanted to share it.

I ve spent nearly 3 hours today and 4 hours last week trying to resolve this on my new S3. I was pretty flummoxed when the wifi signal seemed to drop off without any reason.
After much hunting, my initial hunch seems to be correct
a) Interference from other devices
b) Unable to get an IP address
c) I am just a layman when it comes to networking, but since all of my other devices at home the iPad, iPhone and my laptop seem to have no issues (my laptop occassionally has the same drop-off problem), I thought it's likely to be a phone issue rather than a router issue.
To resolve this I found another thread on the forum and I tried this, and Bingo! it worked.
Press these menu options on your phone: Settings > Wi-fi> (Choose your network by tapping on it for a few seconds) > Modify network config
Check "Show advanced options"
Choose IP Settings: "Static"
Enter these details
IP - 192.168.1.253 or 195.168.1.253
Gateway - 195.168.1.1 (I chose 192.168.1.1 since that's my router address)
NPL - 24
Netmask - 255.255.255.0 (I could not find this option)
DNS 1 - 8.8.4.4 or 8.8.8.8 (I had the latter by default and let it stay)
DNS 2 - 4.4.4.4
And save.
Presto! It just connected in a few milliseconds.
It may not be so simple for each phone, but it's certainly worthwhile to try.
Here is the link the forum thread, where I resolved it:
Good luck

cool.
I've some problem with wifi on galaxy tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 (JB 4.1.2)
When connect using hotspot laptop or tethering via other device, my wifi always scanning every 7s. make my battery run out.
I was trying use advance setting (static IP) but still same.
How to solved this problem?
instable wifi
Somehow the solution with a static ip works perfectly
I also assigned this ip in the router to the mac adress of the phone
Thanks raptorseye
I have a LG G4 (LG-HG11) running Android 6.0 and I have been getting “Internet Not Available” error message everything I connect to my Wifi at home, as well as the Wifi at my parents place. Both Wifis has WPA2 PSK security password settings. I am able to connect to WiFi networks (Local College, MTA subway stations, Library, Work) that requires a two tier login i.e. connect to the wifi, then log in using the web browser. The only exception has been an apple wifi at my in laws - I was able to connect there. The Wifi works in Safe Mode.
Here are the things I’ve tried to no avail:
Forget the network
Turn off the phone and reset the phone
Tried 3 different routers (I even brought a new one)
Used a different cable modem
Unplugged/restart the router
Hard reset the router
Unplugged/restart the modem
I’ve factory reset the phone which seems to do the trick but the same issue has come back three times now. All of the apps I have installed appear to be legitimate apps and all of the other devices I have at home (laptops, tablets (android and apple) as well as Iphones all connect to the network just fine.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
I want to start out by stating this may be a general Verizon issue, but was hoping to get some input here first on the issue I'm facing.
My situation is that I want to replace my home cable internet with my LG G4 via tethering. I installed a wireless card on a desktop computer, connected it to VZW network via wifi tethering from the G4, enabled connection sharing on the desktop computer, then plugged an Ethernet cord from the desktop into the WAN port of my home firewall/router. This worked perfectly, giving the rest of my home devices internet via my 4G connection!
However I have some externally facing services, such as VPN and RD Gateway that don't seem to work over the 4G connection. I've done some troubleshooting and have a suspicion inbound communication on these ports is possible blocked by Verizon.
Sidenote - these services are configured with a Dynamic DNS provider - the external IP address does change correctly when I cutover to 4G service.
I reverted my home network back to the way it was and started focusing on the G4. I played with iptables (I'm rooted) with no luck. I attempted to open ftp connection to the G4 on port 2221 with no luck (using FTPServer & FTP Server Plus apps), still nothing. I changed the port a few times to something random > 1032, still nothing.
Does anyone know if Verizon is blocking external inbound communication, or possibly if there is something on the G4 I'm overlooking?
Any information is appreciated! If I can get through this issue, I can cut my ties to Comcast!!
Everything I've read in the past says that Verizon does not allow inbound TCP connections to your device via LTE. I'm guessing that the same applies to other wireless providers.
