Warranty and knox 0x1 ? (In EU) - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello,
almost a year ago i purchased an Galaxy s9 (Which i regret due the battery not lasting over 2 hrs- 3 hrs max sot time)...
the store asked me if i want to make an extended warranty if i drop my phone and the screen breaks, they gonna replace the screen for free (by sending it to an authorized repair center)
they problem is that authorized repair center will replace the screen but if there is something else broken like a camera or a back glass they gonna charge change them too
in my case my knox is 0x1 and my screen have a small crack, the phone though is in perfect shape not scuffs no anything... i called the repair center (fonemaster authorized repair center in Cyprus)
and they told me that if i modified the firmware and the knox shows 0x1 they will have to replace the motherboard (plus the screen) and its gonna cost me just 500 euros
though i read that rooting the device its not gonna void the warranty

In short: No. Just the fact that you modified or changed the software of your device, is not a sufficient reason to void your statutory warranty. As long as you have bought the device as a consumer in the European Union.
A bit longer: Directive 1999/44/CE dictates¹ that any object meeting certain criteria (including telephones, computers, routers etc.) being sold to a consumer² inside the European Union, has to carry a warranty from the seller that the device will meet the quality that you would expect for such a device for a period of 2 years. A telephone is an example of such a device and is an object that comprises many parts, from the case to the screen to the radio, to a mini-computer, to the battery, to the software that runs it. If any of these parts³ stop working in those 2 years, the seller has to fix or replace them. What is more these repairs should not cost the consumer a single cent — the seller has to cover the expenses (Directive 1999/44/CE, §3). If the seller has any expenses for returning it to the manufacturer, this is not your problem as a consumer.

i think that unfair because i am just asking for a screen replacement and nothing else though the battery was bad from the first week i thought that it was gonna adjust but it never did.... and samsung said to me to sent it to their service center..... and my friend did that and they said that they reflashed the firmware but the battery was still not even good if you compare it with the galaxy a5 2017

i am wondering if that ok to call them and speak directly to a person which gonna repair my device and not the secretary, or it is gonna be time loss

i have personally had a rooted phone replaced under warranty. They didnt even look at it to check, and unless the issue theyre addressing is with something that involves root, why would they waste their time checking for it? Flash your 100% stock files back on it and go for it.

i thought about it ... but i found a person who i exchanged it for oneplus 6 gold (128+ 8gb ram)
i am happy because battery is much better, a few oxygen os tweaks etc.....
the worst thing is the speakers and the screen, everything else is better)

glad you got it worked out to your satisfaction! i havent messed with oxygen in forever! my fiancee has a retired oneplus 2 and she wouldnt let me touch it while she was using it. its sitting in a drawer now, but i cant find the motivation to get it out and mess with it. i didnt know that the OP6 had an 8gb ram option, nice score!

Outrageous Story of HTCdev Bootloader Unlocking in Hong Kong and Requiring a Repair

Hey everyone.
So basically, I live in Hong Kong, and there is an official HTC support center.
So I bought an HTC One X from my carrier, and then after a few days, I noticed I had a yellow spot, but before I detected this problem, I already went on HTCdev and unlocked my bootloader. So I called up HTC HK and talked to a guy, he insisted that I am able to fix it for free. Now, don't ask me why my carrier didn't take it in, they said I must bring it to HTC support center in Yau Ma Tei because it was beyond the 7 day in-store exchange warranty.
I sent my phone in the first time because of the screen issue, and it took about a week. They called me and said, that they are unable to replace the entire device because I unlocked the bootloader, telling me it will cost HKD 1800, and I said, NO! I sent it in because of the screen and not the motherboard! They replaced my phone's screen only, and not the entire device. So when I got my phone back, I had the exact motherboard which said "RELOCKED" and my Serial number matched up with my old one. So they had their hands digging through my 12 day old phone. I checked my phone for other defects, and wouldn't you know it, I found out ANOTHER problem on my screen, yellow spots appeared somewhere else as well as either a dead pixel was located in the middle of the screen, or a speck of dust, I'm not sure. So I yelled at them, and they took it back in.
The second time I sent it in, as I said before, was because of the unidentified dot in the middle of the screen AND the relocated yellow tint on the screen. As they stated before, they said they can't replace the entire device due to the unlocking of the bootloader, so they replaced the screen again. I was told to check the phone, and I found hairline cracks all over the phone. I WAS ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS. All those cracks were due to the repair and poor service, **** SERVICE REPAIR. Okay, I calmed down, I sent it back in, and they said they will replace the housing for me. I was infuriated at the fact that after I told them to repair it for me again, they told me that they will now ask a "Senior Technician" to look over this case, in my head I thought "WHAT THE ****, did you ****ing ask a "Junior technician" to fix this HKD5198 phone?" But I let it all slide, and I got it repaired again.
So yes, the last repair was because the casing was cracked. I took it back in, and was extremely dissatisfied with their repair service. So after listening to all the bull**** they told me AGAIN (voided warranty due to bootloader unlock), I verified my entire phone and checked everything, to make sure everything worked and looked good. I left the place with a fully functioning phone with no yellow spots and unidentified black spots on the screen.
I left the HTC support center, which is a 30 minute ride from my home area (Mid-Levels), and went to my service provider (one2free), I requested to see the senior manager of the company, waited for 15 minutes, and then when I saw him, we requested to speak in a private level of the shop. All staff were forced out of the level, and we started yelling at him. After 45 minutes of constant replies saying "We can't replace your phone directly because firstly, your phone is over the 7 day in-store exchange warranty, and secondly, we need to ask HTC for permission first". At this time, it was around 10pm, and he finally gave in because he was a nice person and we were one of the extreme-VIPs with over 10 unlimited contracts per month (HKD 500/number = HKD5000 a month). After a while, he finally decided to change my phone to the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE phone, which I used for one week. I rooted that phone, and when I restarted CWM recovery, the softkeys broke, even after stock software restore, it was still broken, so they exchanged it for a new phone.
I missed my beloved HTC One X because of the speed and elegancy, so I decided to head over to 3 HK (Hutchison Telecom HK) and my friend took my Samsung Galaxy S II, then helped me get a brand new second batch HTC One X under his number and I was so happy. Flawless to the perfect detail.

That's one hell of a story xD. Good to hear it all turned out well even though you had to go through all that ****. I want to root my phone but because of these stories I don't want to unlock the bootloader...
I have a small yellow dot on the left side of the screen. It's almost not visible only if you look closely on a white background. It doesn't bother me and I could've gotten worse problems so yeah I decided to be happy with this model.
The first post in this thread started on May 2 warned everyone that HTC's no longer providing warranty repairs if they detect a device has had third party s/w loaded on to it. You can unlock the bootloader and still get work done under warranty but you can't load non-official ROMs. There are at least three different threads discussing this and one provides a link to spam HTC's blog in the UK voicing disapproval of the new policy.

Don't expect the manager to help you out much even if you are "VIP" and you go off at the manager hes going to think your an arse and just find the fastest way to get rid of you
I used to work for a service provider in back end and the staff from front desk would always come out to the back and the first thing they'd say is "some prick just went off at me" and if its something that particular staff member didn't do and it was another staff members fault your name and "your a prick gets passed" around the office and nobody will want to help
The best way, is just let whoever your speaking to, know that youre not happy with the service your getting and that you're not actually angry at THAT person your speaking to

Sounds like the device was fixed under warranty. His complaints are that he had to travel 30 minutes and ask more than once for repair.
He wanted a replacement device after voiding the warranty, but didn't want to pay for it, so they replaced the screen under warranty (twice?). And then the casing.
You can't please everybody.
I had a screen problem too but not a yellow spot. If i change the brightness to full and use a black wallpaper you can see a blue spot in the middle of the screen. This is my second HOX after i returned the first one through my carrier in australia because of screen flex and cracking and it took 2 weeks.

Read the entire forum post a few days ago. I sent the device in with a relocked bootloader with the stock RUU reinstalled in it. I know that there was no "illegal software" (as they called it in the other port) present on the device when I sent it in 3 times.

In Hong Kong, one2free/CSL 1O1O is the most "luxurious" and "prestigious" carriers out there for business and high-end markets, so they state. In theory they are supposed to give out good handsets and not flawed ones. Every handset could be flawed and the manufacturers don't want it to be flawed, but the fact that they had the policy of 7 day in-store exchange and I detected it one day after, is just stupid.
But, I know, we weren't actually actually mad at the person we were talking to, he was just trying to help. The other person who was actually furious was because of the phone. We resulted in a happy ending anyways, and that guy told him he wasn't angry at him, rather he was just angry at the service HTC had to provide. We're not that cold hearted you know
I understand where you're going where you said that reasoning is the best way to handle these types of situations, but then it also requires a bit of yelling, and I'll talk about it below.

Yes, you can't please everybody. But have a think about this: How could a repair center do such a crap job that they had to repair it 3 times consecutively? Did they not do a quality check after they fixed the device? I mean, even if I did want to just replace the screen, they should have done it more professionally, not break the casing while repairing the screen.

We're not really classified as the "complain society", we just have many lazy people working for high-end companies and don't do ****, try to get rid of their assigned jobs as soon as possible and just slack off. Without requesting (yelling) to see the manager, they probably would just lie to you and say "Sorry! The manager is not here". As soon as they know how furious we are, they wouldn't mess with us and they would do their job properly.
Maybe if you lived in Hong Kong long enough and had the experience of poor service everywhere, you would know that yelling at them to get them to do something is the only way to get what you want.
If we didn't yell at them, they wouldn't have even prioritized this problem and just told us to leave with a broken phone because of a manufacturing defect on the phone THEY supplied.
This message is just to warn people that if you unlock your bootloader in Hong Kong, and you need a repair, they will repair, and not exchange, as many times as you want.
Hong Kong is a good place, but filled with lazy people due to the current social pressures. Let's say you try reasoning with them, without demanding them to look at your current VIP status, they would LITERALLY just ignore you, and tell you that they won't be able to replace it for you.

But try thinking, if you had your phone repaired, and then you knew it was an intern who repaired your phone, you would know it was poorly repaired or not, but most likely as your schemas will tell you that experts are more superior in skill that interns.
To be honest, I was fine with my repaired phone. It was the other guy I was with who had a bad day, and demanded that I go exchange my phone at my carrier. I gave my phone to him and went off looking at other phones, and he was just yelling at them in the private room. I didn't know how they actually got it exchanged, but the reasoning guy was there as well, so I guess after some demand to realize priority in this situation, and then 30 minutes of reasoning, everything worked out fine. I got my phone and left, really without saying a word.
Well, I have to agree that the repairwork sounds shoddy. When they fixed my DesireHD, they did great job in Yau Ma Tei.
And yes, service can be bad here.
Can I ask somethin about that famous yellow screen defect and flex issue?
Is it something that the phone comes with from the first day or is it developed gradually?
I mean, if we know that those are the 2 well-known issues, when we buy our phone we can check it for a couple of days and then root. Now, if the problem will develop later, we are in trouble. I'm waiting mine in a few weeks and that's why I ask.

We are one hell of an abusive customer is king society.
I worked in service sector for half and it is insanely difficult to please any customers.
People asking for special favors or deals because they are buying expensive items.
I know that sometimes it feels like you have to get the situation serious for them to do anything. But most often when you have to go that far, you are disturbing other customer's who are being serviced.
The manager resolved to those solutions (such as giving a replacement phone when warrenty is void) is actually to shut you up asap. You aren't meant to get repair or replacement once warrenty is void (or so I think it is anyway).
Now that you or your fd has got it, you would feel it is their fault at the start for not just giving you one.
But you ain't supposed to have one.
So don't call them ridiculous, or need to yell to get them do something.
Generally these cases are out of standard routine and not fair for other customers

As stated, I did all this at night, in a special room. No other customers were there, it was dead quiet.
The point isn't that I voided my warranty. It is half of what I'm saying. We were upset of the job HTC did to repair my phone. And obviously its not like they didn't take my phone because of the warranty void, it was that we wanted to exchange a defective phone 12 days after purchase, 5 days beyond in-store exchange. Even 3 has a 14 day in-store replacement service, why does 1O1O only have 7? That's what I'm saying. Hong Kong carriers don't really give a damn if you unlocked your bootloaders, they don't know how to even check, its only the HTC service center that does this.
The point is, I am supposed to be issued a replacement if the phone THEY supplied had a defect and I had to go exchange it three times. They didn't care for bootloader unlocks, they just cared for their stupid 7 day in-store warranty and their lack of support after that.

I just got a new GT-I9210 LTE and the rooting information is very confusing everywhere, people using Skyrocket ROMs and such claiming they're the same, but many saying the soft keys broke. Apparently this particular model doesn't have a solid community of users like Nexus or others. So I'm quite anxious about making mistakes and all, you know ;-)
And I happened to come across your post in another thread titled "[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Root [SOLVED]" from May 9, where you said that you successfully rooted SGS2 LTE (your mentioned specs exactly match mine) and your soft keys and everything works perfectly.
Now, I'm not trying to catch you out or anything, I was very excited when I found your instructions there first but I am just wondering, is this the same phone you are talking about here and there?
I would like to follow your method if it really worked.

Warranty when screen broke?

I've had a Galaxy Nexus for a very long time now and have been very happy with it. These days however, a very annoying charging problem appeared on my Galaxy Nexus. Now I want to fix my Galaxy Nexus under warranty, because that's the safest way and I don't want to invest any money in it anymore since I plan on buying the new Nexus when it comes out. Problem is, my Galaxy Nexus' screen broke a few weeks ago (For the people who are wondering how; phone fell on the ground and then a biker rode over it...) and I'm not sure if Samsung will fix my phone under warranty since I'm 99% sure it's a hardware issue and it COULD have been from the drop which broke my screen (which I'm 100% sure it's not, because I had the same problem some months ago, but it promptly disappeared and just a few days ago, which means it was a few weeks after the drop, the problem came back.)
Anyone here can tell me what Samsung's and my rights are and if they will fix it? I'm currently visiting family in China, so if I'm not sure if Samsung's going to fix it, I can probably let it fix in China for cheaper, but that's not my preferred option, since it will officially break my warranty (and still costs money of course ).
Anyone? There must be someone who has some experience in warranties... ?
Is the glass cracked?
Warranties cover problems/defects from normal use. If they see the broken glass they will tell you that the problem was caused by an accident or drop which is not their fault.
you may get lucky and they could replace it, but its their decision.

Screen replacements aren't cheap either..$100-$150 at least

You should get quotes from a few places before repairing, If someone offers to replace it WAY cheap than the others it may be a poor quality screen they're using. The most expensive one will be samsung though. ( I supposed since its OEM)
I know screen replacements aren't cheap, I've done my research. The problem is that the glass is linked to the whole screen which means you've basically got to replace half of your phone just for the glass. The cheapest I've found for a repair is about 190 euro.
But that's NOT what I meant. Because it's so expensive I've decided to not repair the screen and wait for the new Nexus phone. I can live a few months with a broken screen. I can't live with this charging issue however so I just want to fix the mini USB port. I got my contacts in China, so bad quality isn't a problem.
So basically I got two options:
1. Let the USB port fix in China for cheap
2. Let the USB port fix by Samsung in Europe (where I live) under warranty, but have a chance to be denied thanks to the broken screen.
And you guys recommend me to do the first one right?

I don't know how comfortable you feel about getting it repaired in China, but if you really trust your contacts, then get both of them done there. Since you said that you are going to get the new Nexus when it comes out, you really don't have anything to lose.
I do have trusts in my contacts in China. Just wasn't sure if I should do it because I will probably lose my warranty and it costs money. But I've decided: I'm hoping to let it repair in China, thank you! (Only the USB port btw, not screen).
They will likely deny your claim for a warranty replacement and tell you that it was probably just damaged when it fell. Unless you can actually prove to a rep that the issue happened before the drop. Even so, cracked glass generally voids your warranty as user inflicted abuse. Factory warranty generally only covers problems cause by the makers of the device. Anything else and the warranty is voided and the claim dismissed.
Source: I dropped my last Samsung phone. Cracked glass, bad radio. Was going to be warranty replaced, until I dropped it. They had on file my claim for the bad radio, but since the screen cracked after the fact they told me that voided the warranty and they absolutely would not honor the replacement. I had to pay an insurance deductible and get it replaced for $99USD.

[Q] Getting screwed by Samsung. What are my options?

I bought a Note 2 off eBay. It was in perfect condition, it had no problems. Lately my phone has been getting really really hot. One day I had it charging overnight, that night the weather dropped and when I picked it up the next day I noticed a line across the top of the screen. I didn't understand how this could of happened since I never drop my phone and I usually keep it in the case and holder combo. I could only assume the overheating caused it.
I contacted Samsung Support and told the rep what happened. He said that it was probably the battery that caused it and said an overheating issue would allow it to be repaired under warranty. I sent it in and never received any status alerts (like I was told I would) about the phone. I checked today and it said it's been on hold because "Customer didn't acceept the payment". I was furious. Payment for what??? "PHONE IS OOW BY CONDITION, THE LCD IS DAMAGED, NEEDS PAYMENT."
I called to see what's going on and the agent kept giving me the same scripted response of "the phone was damaged, any damage voids the warranty". I told him the issue and he kept telling me "I can't speculate on the condition of your phone sir. It is not in front of me. Your warranty is voided. It will cost $191.60 to repair your phone". I told him I wanted to speak with his supervisor. He said "He will say the same thing sir. Your warranty is voided. It will cost $191.60 to repair your phone". I said "Ok, I still want to speak with your supervisor". He said Ok, then put me on hold for 15 mins. Then the line went dead.
Is there anything else I can do, or am I SOL?
when you buy cheap used phones on Ebay, you never know what is really going on with them; obviously, yours had issues that didnt show up right away..
I dont think Samsungs warranty extends to subsequent users after the original owner...
Dont expect perfection when you buy used phones on ebay..

I told him I wanted to speak with his supervisor. He said "He will say the same thing sir. Your warranty is voided. It will cost $191.60 to repair your phone". I said "Ok, I still want to speak with your supervisor". He said Ok, then put me on hold for 15 mins. Then the line went dead.
Is there anything else I can do, or am I SOL?

You may be SOL this time. Next time you ship anything to anyone for repair, take extensive photographs of the items before shipment. I had a rep from Seagate try to tell me that a drive I pulled from a server for RMA replacement was void because "all of the screws" were missing. This was of course complete BS, and when I sent them the photos of the drive before I shipped it and when they sent it back unrepaired, they changed their tune. They sent me a prepaid box to ship the drive back to them and replaced it without further question.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone dropped your phone or damaged it in shipping and now they are passing the costs onto you. Ask for photos of the alleged "LCD damage".

Thanks, I actually did take photos of the screen. How would I request them to take photos? I have no contact info for this "repair center". They never contacted me, if I didn't call the call center I wouldn't have even known where my phone was. I think my biggest problem with this is that I've been given zero information about my phone and I just have to take this outsourced rep's word that I broke my phone and I need to pay them.

The phone was basically new. Samsung told me the warranty started the month I got it. It wasn't registered to anyone, I didn't even register it until I first called.
From my experience from working for customer care for the mobile industry; dont ever count on warranty to fix your issue. Insurance works better, but they can screw you over with that as well. Even if its not damaged...

I have called samsung in the past also and had issues with there customer service for mobile devices over the stupied usb plug that just pops out, that i just ended up throwing away and buying my own. Sorry to hear about your issues but I would request if they could just ship the phone back to you and you'll fix your self because all there going to do is fix the screen and not do anything with the overheating.

Ok let try some productive help. How long have you had the phone? Ebay covers the buyer for a period of time. Read there terms and conditions. So does paypal. Contact the seller dependi g on how long you had your phone. I sell used phones on ebay and I back my stuff I sell. So try those avenues of help. At the very least it doesnt hurt to try. Also you can pay the 191 then sell it online as refurbished or just sell it online for parts and buy a different phone.

Just an update:
I called my bank and I was told I could "possibly" be refunded due to the issue. I'm not really counting on it though. I also contacted Samsung again and was connected to a nice rep. He decided to escalate my issue to "advance technical support". The ATS rep said any LCD damage still voids the warranty, but because of the bad info I was originally given and the "unacceptable" lack of updates he could reduce the fee. He said he could drop it to $70, expedite the service, and also include a motherboard, processor, and battery replacement for free. It sounds like a good offer, but I'm wondering if they'd just say they replaced the parts, but really never touched them...

ARGH!!!!
I just called Samsung again and asked to speak to ATS so I can pay for the repair. I told the woman the issue and she read all the notes from the beginning. Now she is telling me this is definitely a warranty issue regardless of LCD damage. She said when phones arrive first they take them apart before they do any investigations into the problems. Apparently it was written off as "out of warranty" because of the LCD damage without even looking for the cause. She told me not pay for repairs and that she added extra notes to escalate this to the warranty department. Unfortunately it was closed, so she told me to call back on Monday and they will transfer me there.
Good lord sammy sucks. How is it that companies can achieve these marvelous pieces of engineering every couple of years yet they can't give you the same story when you call them on the phone.

So I called today and explained again what happened. This time I was told there is no warranty department and that ATS is capable of solving my problem. He told me because I sent it in expecting it to be a free repair, I was never given any status updates, I was given misinformation several times, and this has been such a long drawn out ordeal, he waived the $70. So now they're expediting the repair, replacing the screen, motherboard, processor and battery free of charge. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that this will be the end of it. I'll update once my phone is back in my hands.
I wouldn't count on it. They prolly just want you off the phone
And when it comes back repaired you will have a warranty on their work.

How to get LG to honour warranty on a rooted phone?

Hi guys.
So I was unlucky enough to get one of the G4's that were built last summer with a hardware defect. It is completely bricked and I can only get it into download mode - and the LG Flash Tool can't do anything with it. I called LG and explained as best I could that it is rooted but it's definitely the hardware defect causing problems (was working fine before). They said they wouldn't touch it.
I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to convince them to honour it or any other ideas slightly outside the box?

You shouldn't tell them you rooted it. If you unlocked bootloader which is visible on power on i would have tried to fry it somehow for good. Put it in microwave or inverse polarity or somethin...or higher voltage
I purchased a G4 in Slovakia, and RMAd 2 times with the bootloader unlocked. They changed the display and motherboard for free. So I think the warranty also depends on your country and the shop where you got it.
In germany you have to show the manufacturer/retailer that the defect what not caused by you rooting the phone/installing a ROM/unlocking the bootloader/ etc. (since you cannot completely void your guarantee)
So, for example, if you rooted your phone and the charging port is not working you can say that this defect could not be caused by any ROM/tweak/whatever and you can reclaim you guarantee.
If it is a hardware failure known to LG you could argue that the rooting did nothing to accomplish it and that the defect is purely LG's fault and that they have to repair/replace your phone.
Since I don't know in which country you live I don't know how this is handled there, but I don't think it is that different from Germany.

seeee7: As far as I know that Germany is part of EU that mean that EU laws & regulations applies - good for you, because seller is responsible for any faults (inherently faulty, bad design...) for 2years (except for battery) - good for you because that crap you "agreed" when you ask for bootlocker unlock code is irrelevant. And as I wrote seller is responsible NOT manufacturer!!! And second thing is about your 1st sentence - within warranty/guarantee seller has to prove that malfunction/harm was caused by improper usage, NOT you. BTW - in case of inherently faulty/bad design goods you can ask seller for money back, repair even after warranty/guarantee period (within reasonable time - within expected usability period - ie. not 10yea after you bought phone) - but in this case you have to prove that failure/harm/problem was caused by bad design/manufacturing...
I know that because I have HTC Universal and T-Mobile UK refused to fix my phone, so I was forced to raise an action against them @ sheriff's court (Small claim action in Glasgow, Scotland). Feew weeks before 1st court session, they sent me a checque with full amount I wanted (fee for action, indepent repair, external charger, 2nd battery, compensation for inconvenience... - and they paid twice the price of new Uni, and at least 5times more than repair) as I guess they knew they will fail.
SO in the worst case go to court.
I always call them and tell them that i woke up and the phone wouldn't turn on.

The 2-year EU regulation is only a guarantee, but the unlock voids my warranty (I made a mistake in my previous post).
The guarantee is a EU right and is something between me and the seller/retailer.
[+]The warranty is (in this case) a contract between you and LG (not the seller).
So yes, the seller is still responsible for any faults but any extra warranty given to you by LG is now void. A warranty covers a wider range of problems. So the bootloader unlock's t&c are not irrevant, only usually the warranty given to you by the companies/retailers is just pure marketing and doesn't extend the basic EU rights very much (L don't know whats inside the LG warranty but I think it's just a standard warranty like any other)
Adding to this, the EU regulation states that only in the first six months, the retailer has to prove that the failure was caused by a misuse. After these 6 months you actually have to show that the failure was already there when you bought the device (and that you did nothing that has invoked the defect).
A short example of where you invoked the defect on your phone: You installed a custom ROM that disabled the heat control of the CPU and it overheated and stopped working.
An example of where it was LG's fault: You put a custom ROM on the phone and the charging port is broken. The ROM couldn't have damaged the port.
With a bootloader unlock the seller could (even within the first 6 months!) argue that you "misused" the phone by rooting it and doing whatever with it. And then you have to show them that the rooting did nothing to invoke the problem.
Back to OP's problem: You need to talk to your retailer, just don't tell him that you unlocked/rooted/wahtever. If he refuses to repair your phone, tell him that your rooting did nothing on the defect and that it was a design/hardware failure. If you are living in the EU say him that he cannot 100% prove that it was your failure and claim your rights (tell him about "1999/44/EC" (the name of the regulation), most sellers/retailers tend to be very cooperative when confronted with precise knowledge about one's rights )
And, as phsnake said, go to court in the worst case. Or tell you retailer that you'll do it, maybe you get the same outcome as phsnake

Repair for cracked screen

Has anyone had a cracked screen repaired? Google told me they don't do that because it's not covered under warranty. I get that I have to pay for it, but they said they don't repair that and I have to find a 3rd party. A repair shop told me the screen isn't available to order.
I find it hard ti believe that if the screen breaks that's just the end of it.

I did a quick Google search and got zero results for replacement screen.
Formidable for me. But they're Google, manufacturer of the Pixel C. That would seem to put them in a unique position to know how to repair it. And they probably know where to get the screens because they make those too.
But what's really odd is that they didn't know who does repairs. I'm not exaggerating or embellishing. After she put me on hold for a while she said she didn't know and that I should try looking around at the mall.
I have a message with their forum and maybe I'll try calling them again. It has to be a mistake.
This just happend to me 2 weeks ago when I managed to drop my beutiful Pixcel C and destroy the screen. I was furious with myself. Screen still worked, touch was fully responsive, but it looked bloody horrible. I tried searching online also to no avail. In the end I contacted the Play Store support team by phone (I'm in Ireland, but I think it was a UK call centre I was talking to). I explained my situation to the rep, and he put me on hold for a few mins while he talked to technical support. When he came back, he asked me to email him a few photos to show the damage (he mailed me his address and asked that I just reply with the photos). Following day I got an email from a different rep, who said they were going to RMA my damaged tablet, and that they would send me new one by following through on a link they sent me to the play store where I could order the replacement, but the offer was only available for 24 hours. In the email, it did specify that I would not be charged for the replacement tablet, but failure to return the old one would mean my card be charged in full for the cost of the replacement. Also, "if it was determined that the damaged tablet wasn't a warranty defect, my card could be charged up to the cost of the replacement device". I sent another email to clarify this point to say that this WAS NOT a warranty issue, and I fully expected to pay the repair costs, but not up to the full value of the tablet. If this was the case, I would just be better off ordering a replacement tablet from the store as normal, because if I send back the damaged tablet (which still worked fine), get billed the full cost of the replacement unit, I still end up with one tablet but have paid full price for the new one......whereas if I just bite the bullet & order from the store, I pay the same amount and still have the old tablet as a spare? They never responded to this mail, and as the time was running out on the 24hr window for the offer......wisely or not, I pressed the button to order the replacment unit from the link they provided.
Google shipped the new tablet within 24hrs complete with return prepaid UPS labels & instructions. They put a hold for €509 on my c/card, but have not actually taken the money. The damaged tablet was recieved back at their wharehouse in Germany today (according to the UPS tracking info), but I haven't heard anything yet from Google about how much they're going to bill me. If they charge me the full cost, I will NOT be a happy camper, but currently, I love how they took care of me.
I will update again when I hear anything back about what they'll end up charging me. Hope this info might help.

Colm, the wording you mentioned is there to handle issues like accidental damage [which yours is] being passed off as a warranty damage. but the emails are in your favor in that you fully explained the situation and google offered an exchange knowing it was accidental damage. i don't think it was worded specifically to your situation , rather all standard situations. this is to protect google from the cases were owners basically try to pass off accidental damage as warranty damage , which you did not attempt to do. whenever i contact google on product issues i use chat so i have a transcript. but you used email so basically no difference. i think google is handling your situation as a goodwill item meaning they will gain more in just sending a replacement via having a very happy customer than they would by having you unhappy and maybe not wanting to ever purchase another product.
If that turns out to be the case, never mind happy, I'd be bloody ecstatic! But, I won't get my hopes up till I get some kind of confirmation from the big G. And yeah, in all my communications, I make it very clear this was not a warranty issue, and I fully expected to pay something for the repair to the damaged device.
I'll post again here if/when I hear back from G.

Google replaced my device. They said they were sending a refurbished unit with no charger, and they sent me a new retail package (with charger.)
I've had some grief with this tablet, but replacing it after I dropped and broke it is pretty awesome. And even though I've been okay with the little Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 I had replaced it with, I couldn't wait to get this back. I don't care if it's a little bit heavier than something else. I love my ginormous Pixel C.
Did you guys by an extra warranty or was it included?
My screen just got smashed. How and who did you contact at google? Hopefully I get the same response.
Any suggestions for current (Oct 2018) screen replacement ?
