unlocking bootloader - widevine - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Just a quick question, does unlocking the bootloader on the pixel 3 disable widevine in Netflix etc like it goes in some other devices? Thanks

no it doesn't but there are few who have had issues.
check here... https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3-xl/help/widevine-level-3-drm-stock-locked-t3923766

What I mean is you still have L1 but because certain apps detect an unlocked bootloader they won't give full hd. It definitely different with pixel 3 then?
Thank you

If you have L1 then nope no other app restricts you from viewing hd stuff based on DRM.
If you speaking about banking apps and stuff that's different for example gpay does restrict you from adding a card if you unlock bootloader and still has L1
Haven't heard any media streaming app which restricts.
If you have any app then i can check if the bootloader unlock messes it up or not.
Same goes for Pixel 3xl and other devices. If your device state is L1 it should be fine for media streaming apps.

If you could on pocophone Netflix wouldn't even show up on play store if you had bootloader unlocked and Amazon wouldn't play full hd. Banking apps worked as long as you didn't root and even with root using magisk and some other tricks you could get around it. Im just very tempted to flash a kernel to increase screen brightness, Google's clearly crippled it to try to hide the fact the battery is small but in direct sunlight its terrible

No idea about pocophone. But all the devices I have used with bootloader unlocked worked fine with Netflix just had to hide root stuff. Pixel 3 does for sure and you could see it from the thread linked earlier.
Gpay messes up even with bootloader unlocked and no root. So I am going to leave that app as it is unless there is no other banking alternative in android world ?
Well battery is yeah could have beefed up more personally it takes me through the day I needed and lighting in sunlight with auto bright is fine for me or I am blind lol.

Unlock Bootloader and DRM - Netflix / Amazon prime: still possible to view/download?

Hey guys!
Ive read that on LGs website that unlocking the phone will disable certain functions:
"When unlocking the bootloader, the DRM protection of your phone will become untrusted.
Some applications which require DRM protection may not work anymore or block certain functions due to this untrusted DRM.
Common examples are applications which offer download/streaming of paid multimedia content like music and movies."
Can someone tell me if theres a problem with netflix and amazon prime? Or is it still possible to view/download movies? If yes: Could it change?

Thanks, Im too, but with low effort method. So without an unlocked bootloader - and maybe there is someone with an unlocked bootloader and can tell me, if there are problems.. So I would like to know that before

I think it is possible . If you want an immediate solution, call netflix directly and ask the problem.
mine is locked and its rooted, i deleted all related to drm and dvix.. i dont use netflix though.
They will work, at least with my H811 USA T-Mobile roms. I watch Netfix almost everyday and have watched Amazon vids in past too.

Youtube and 60 fps

Hi!
Couldn't find any threads about this from XDA-OnePlus 3 section.
Anyway I've seen that some people do have ability to watch these videos in 60 fps but mostly if a video is in 60 fps the Youtube app gives only up to 480p resolution.
Only workaround is known to be to use youtube via chrome and request desktop version, where one can choose the 60 fps option.
Does anyone here know about the YT app resolution/framing restrictions or fixes to this particular problem?
As far as I'm aware it's something that OP needs to add support for. That is all I have been able to find on Google.

Drats, can't root because of banking apps have root checks, and while there are root cloaks. It's a hassle.
It has been said that 1+3 is now whitelisted in the Youtube app for 60fps play (hearsay from oneplus forums)
But apparently seems now that the VP9 play has to be whitelisted also, will check that.

Yes but I just received my OP3, forgot to root it, and to root you have to unlock the bootloader, which erases all the data.

Same here (and I came from a Nexus 5 where I unlocked the bootloader first day!)
By the time I had added my bank app, my two-stage authenticators for steam, microsoft...etc etc I suddenly thought about that too.
But in all honesty, with OxygenOS currently I feel no need to root it (yet?) and erasing my whole device just to fix youtube and have to re-setup all of that is a massive pain in the but.

Though slightly off topic, move your authentication to Authenticator Plus (has android wear support too) or Authy, and then even if you wipe your device, you can just re download an app and they will re-sync Authy is free, but i prefer Authenticator plus.
You can always use the OGYoutube app, but you won't be able to login unless you have Xposed installed
I've heard that it is something that Google has to do by adding OnePlus 3 in to their database and OnePlus cannot do anything about that until Google sorts it out. (People with LG G5s and HTC 10s are also having this problem)

That's I interesting as I have been holding off rooting because I use barclays banking and also pingit. Do you know if these work and also why did you decide to root. Back in the day would have done immediately but trying to justify it now is tough when oneplus keep rolling out updates every 2 weeks ota.

Their really isn't too much of a reason. I like a few root utilities e.g to access kernel settings and that's about it. For banking, I know Halifax and lloyds work with systemless root. Like you don't even need to turn it off. Just opened the barclays app as I'm not with them and it doesnt seen to like systemless root, or more it works with systemless root but it detects the SuperSU application. If you can mask that with systemless xposed you should be sound

Yes the infamous whitelisting of Google Corp.
I've contacted Youtube support to specify if the OnePlus 3 truly is whitelisted for 60 fps although not expecting an answer from them. Because on the official oneplus forums, one of the users said that it 1+3 is now whitelisted (as of newest version of the YT app)
But it still doesn't work so either the user is wrongly informed, youtube support lies or VN9 - decoding must be whitelisted also. Or I'm way too far in the speculation swamp and the problem lies somewhere else.

It should be whitlisted by now or at least in some regions I guess?
I'm getting 1080p 60fps on the stock youtube app running OOS 3.2.2
I've had the same issues but ever since the 3.2.1 update that came out 3 weeks ago, I have been able to view 1080p60 videos. I had to clear app data and the cache a couple times but it works for me.
I watch a lot of gaming vids in 60fps so having to watch them in 480p for a while was maddening.

I encouraged one user from OP forums to do YT app re-install and warned him that he might lose the 60 fps play, and he did lose it.
You can try it too but be warned

knox counter triggered! is there a way to reset it?

After rooting my Note 7, I've noticed that my Knox counter has been triggered, normally I would mind but several apps seem to depend on it to work properly(I can't even open S Health!). Is there away to reset it yet? thanks
Nope. When you root, a physical fuse in the phone is blown, so unless you have epic soldering and mad haxorz skills then you're pretty much screwed
get it exchanged in the recall, and don't root your new phone.
there's not that much you can do with root that you can't do without root, especially on recent high-end Samsung phones.
I am rooted and my S Health works. I believe the only thing that would be permanently disabled is Samsung Pay. Some banking apps will not run if you have root but you can always install an Xposed module called root cloak to circumvent that issue.

S-health is still there, do a search and you can find instructions to access it. You should only lose secure folder and pay, if you want those things you should follow the advice above and not root your replacement phone. I'm not beating you up here but as an FYI you should have known the ramifications of rooting before you rooted, it's best to know what you're in for before you commit to a course of action that may be irreversible.

Sadly depending on what you want not everything is available without rooting.
Unless you can tell me how to change all app dpi individually.
YouTube adblocker
Synapse
Adaway
Greenify... not as as good un rooted mode
Amplify
Smart network

you're mentioning specific root-only apps.
obviously those won't work, but there are alternative methods with (close to) the same results.
adaway: adguard, it's better anyway(doesn't rely on a system designed for no more than 100 rules, easy to toggle on/off, supports whitelisting of apps, supports firewall functionality, and can target not just entire domains but also single lines of code)
adfree YouTube: yes this one is trickier, you'd need a 3rd party YouTube app or the website+adguard to avoid ads.
alternatively you can use "Cygery AdSkip for YouTube" to automatically skip ads after 5 seconds.
as you said, greenify works just not as effective.
similar "power saving" functions however are built in on recent android devices.
and from what I can tell every function in "smart network" except switching to 2G can be achieved without root using tasker.
synapse and per app DPI are the only things on your list that are completely impossible without root(although using game tuner's resolution settings you should be able to influence scaling in some apps)
Also if you use YouTube backgrounder, OGyoutube works great and allows background / downloading of content. I'm still looking for an ad free YouTube but this suffices in the meantime.

do you have the link for it? when I try to open it, it says the following:
"Unable to open app
Because of a new security policy introduced in version 5.0, Knox is not available on compromised devices"
I've already frozen all the knox apps I could find in TB.
strange, I just checked my 2-year old Note 4, the knox has also been triggered awhile ago, but i could use S Health fine. Why would S Health have anything to do with Knox?

S Health may use Knox to protect your health data (HIPAA in the USA).
The S-health thing is new, people are circumventing it by an app that lets you access the widget and from it you can open it up or some such, don't use it so I paid little attention to the fix. Don't remember where I saw that but it's here somewhere shine, I would peruse the development threads, I'm thinking I saw it in one of them.

Anyone go back to stock from rooted?

I have been finding myself only using Magisk for EmojiOne, but noticing I don't use Emoji like I used to anymore and am thinking since I only use Substratum with a Center Clock mod and have stopped using it for Dark theming, maybe going back to a stock based setup would be fine. I can use the Andromeda thing with Substratum which is an extra step but can do my center clock and possibly emoji one via substratum... not sure what else I would want root for... Updating is a touch of a pain for me. What do yo guys think, and have any of you gone back to stock?
I went back to stock just because I didn't want to have the uncertainty of being rooted.
Nothing wrong with rooting but I love this phone the way it is.

For myself Rooting was a necessity. The devices sold in the past had so much Crapware.
It was nice to get the latest and greatest ROM and tweak the device to run faster because at that time they were just plain old slow.
Today, depending on where you bought a device devices are very fast. It seems to me that every ROM has an issue that influences the character of the device.
If your device comes from a carrier such as Verizon you should Root it to get rid of their crapware.
It seems their attitude is you only have the right to buy their device not the ability to control, I mean really you think you own it or something? ( yes I'm a VZW hater)
What was the question?

Lol, I agree 100%. I can simply disable gMail and Calculator, the only 2 APPs pre-installed on my Pixel 2 XL that I don't need. I use Inbox by Google for eMails and a Calculator Widget for that. Aside from the EmojiOne and CenterClock, I don't even dark-theme anymore, especially not on this device with the "black crush" all the OLEDs have an issue with. I was rooted fro KCal, but am finding the Boosted setting works just fine and oddly my Blue Tint has weakened since my first few days where it was really bad. Almost like the display is wearing in and getting better? It's still there, but just not as much as that first fresh opening, so warming up the display isn't needed much for me now either.
I like to see where people's heads are at with each device, and this is one the extra input is nice to read.
I'm actually on the fence about rooting. Just received my phone this weekend and I can't decide. Going to unlock bootloader before fully setting up, but I have been playing with it a little. I've always rooted and ran custom ROMs as well as adaway. With PureNexus on my N6 I stopped flashing for over a year except the occasional ROM update. I simply like Android in it's simplest form.
I will always root, no matter what. The only downside is like you said, having to mess with getting OTAs in an unnatural way. However, seeing as how I flash all factory images, I get them sooner than those waiting on an OTA to hit their phone. Plus once you have all the tools ready to go, it literally only takes a few minutes to flash an update.
I always root because I usually run stock. And while stock on a Pixel 2 XL is damn near close to perfection, it will never be what "I" consider perfect. Which means I have to mess with the /system files to get things "perfect." I've modded the stock launcher, which I couldn't do if I was rooted. I've switched out fonts. I've changed the navbar, status bar, and quick settings. And of course, there's always AdAway which requires root. Granted some of those things can be achieved with third party apps, but I'd rather get it done "internally" whenever possible.
I used to have it for years, then more and more companies (Google and banks) made their apps check for root, and I tired of the cat and mouse game with SuperSU and Magisk. So I unrooted over a year ago. Didn't miss it at all until yesterday, when I wanted to do something with Tasker that requires root. But what I wanted to do falls into the category of "it would be nice" as opposed to "I have/need to do this", so I remain unrooted. I haven't really missed it much.
I am stuck without root since I have the Verizon model which was given to me free from work so I cannot complain too much. I have always rooted and messed with ROMs. The only thing I would need root for with the 2 XL is ad blocking with Chrome. I am trying the Samsung browser and ABP which work pretty well together.
If I didn't have the noise cancellation mic issue on my 6P I think I would have given up root a long time ago...
I rotate between stock and rooted daily lol

I am sort of glad I found this thread. I'm not a XDA regular but I've been following root guides from here since my Razr Mazz HD. I chose the Pixel in part for the ease of getting root and for Project Fi. Now that I have the phone, I'm not sure I want to root. I've never had a phone with quick updates before. I LOVE AdAway, but is it really worth the tradeoff? AdGuard is just as good if you don't use your VPN slot but if you DO use a VPN and need it.... not rooting forces me to choose between PIA and AdGuard. But do I even need a VPN anymore with Project Fi? Probably... Firefox with uBlock works pretty well too but doesn't work on apps. Oh the decisions.

If you like it the way it is, then I'd just leave it. It's a great device on stock. However, having root, AdAway, TiBu, kernels, and mods, is a lot of fun as well. As long as you know adb and fastboot fairly well, rooting and flashing monthly updates is pretty easy :good:
I was rooted from the get go!!
I'm going to try to live without root for a bit but already hating not having AdAway. I just know I won't keep up with updates if I have to do them. I sure wish AdAway didn't need root

I'm not regretting going back to stock from rooted as the only things I no longer have is center clock and emojione, which I 'could' get using Andromeda / Substratum but heard you have to reconnect to the computer anytime you reboot the phone and decided that's just not worth it for me. I am interested in ad blocking if possible without Root for Chrome. Only Ads that get in my way are via "News" and articles I touch from the Google Feed. Sadly many lately are blatant click-bait, page-hopping crap and slideshows that I refuse to go past the first page on.
Edit: Well, just ran across something known as DNS66 and have that up and running without Root and sure enough, it's blocking Ads on everything, even in Chrome without issue.

First thing I did with my unlocked XL 2 was to unlock the bootloader. I then rooted once Magisk was available. I root so I can do pain-free full TiBu of my apps and for AdAway. Even though I have corporate email on my phone, the Magisk Hide bypasses their restrictions in the email app.
I'm actually kind of shocked we don't have more ROMs for this phone, though I'm not a Dev and don't know how complex it may be. If more Devs release custom ROMs, I'll be trying some out for sure.
I never buy android phone unless it's bootloader-unlockable and root-able
Too many handicap applied without root.
I hate dns/vpn based adblock, it cluttering my status bar and notification. So, yes, i need root for adaway,
Google limit Tethering frequency option for my country (No 5Ghz) so, yes, i need root to enable it,
I like the ability to background play youtube, and see youtube without ads, so yes, i root my phone for that. Sure, no root option is available, but lot of problem with google account cant sign in, and this and that.
I like the ability to use Brevent, Edge Sense Plus, Greenify etc without the need of plugging my phone to PC and do adb command. So, yes, i rooted my phone for that.
The phone will never be 100% yours, unless you have total control over anything inside it
So,
There's no way am back to stock. Especially with xposed working so well right now.

Should I root?

HI All,
So I've have my 7T for about a month now and are very happy coming from a P 2xl.
Now I'm thinking should I or should I not root. When I had my Note 4 I rooted all the time but now that I think of it, even though it was kind of fun, I don't miss the bugs. On the positive side , due to so much bloat from Samsung, I liked the ability to delete and clean out the phone. Moving on the P 2 XL I didn't root because it was so clean and Google lets you delete practically everything you don't want. Now I'm with the 7T which seems to be another "clean" phone.
At this point , I'm looking for suggestions:
What are the pros and cons?
Happy Holidays
Rich
It's more like what you want to achieve with root.
It's a bit more complicated since there is no TWRP. And it case something goes wrong, it might be a bit tricky to get restore everything, but you should be fine since there's are plenty of instructions.
I've heard some banking apps does not work, but haven't experienced that.
Unlocking the bootloader makes the widevine Level L3, so you are limited to 720p Netflix.
Sent from my OnePlus7TPro using XDA Labs
I don't think it is necessary to root because you can debloat with adb commands. If you root the banking apps won't work for example and because of rooting you expose yourself to a security risk
I tried it, didn't end up working well, had to use the OnePlus recovery tool
Also as for banking apps stopping working, use magisk hide, may also work on Netflix but not sure
I'm usually a big fan of rooting, but have been using my 7t for a week without it and don't miss it. Brave browser and adb debloat has accomplished most of what I need root for.
In my case answer was simple. Titaniumbackup requires root. Not all apps have import/export settings or do so completely. Adaway, Vpn hotspot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.mygod.vpnhotspot&hl=en_US), and some other apps I use also require root. Hell, I could of gotten a samdung product (on promotion) for a few bucks more. Root or bust !!!
Reasons to root:
Adaway
Reasons not to:
I rooted the phone a month or so back to use a custom kernel, install AdAway and even tried out OmniROM which was quite buggy and essentially a step down from OxygenOS. More importantly, it wasn't worth it because of losing Widevine L1 which is needed in my case for Netflix and Prime Video, as I occasionally connect it to other display devices over Type-C. Banking apps mostly worked with Magisk Hide but then some of them were a bit glitchy.
Moreover, it was a bit of a pain to restore OxygenOS as the fastboot roms fail the integrity check and the only option is to do a factory flash. I eventually settled on debloating through adb and using Blokada for adblocking which more or less serves its purpose.
I root on the first day. Mainly for adaway , viper4android and theming. Its just way easier to achieve these with root .

HI All,
So I've have my 7T for about a month now and are very happy coming from a P 2xl.

I don't think it is necessary to root because you can debloat with adb commands. If you root the banking apps won't work for example and because of rooting you expose yourself to a security risk

I tend to agree with you. Please explain " adb commands". I've heard of them but have no idea how to use them. Plus what is the bloat in this phone? What items should be gone?
Thanks
