Will You Upgrade To The Zenfone 6Z? - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

It's supposed to launch/reveal in May. I have the 5z now and been nothing but happy with the phone. From rumors I've read it's supposed to have the 855sd processor and higher mp cameras 48mp rear with triple cameras from what I've read
If the battery is significantly bigger than the one in the 5z I may end up grabbing and selling my 5z if I like the design and features of the 6z. Not interested in the pop up front cameras tho that may be a reason I pass
Are you keeping a eye on the 6z or are you content with your 5z?

No need. I just want Lineage OS

No. I'm done with ASUS

Yes, if they offer a good buyback option for 5Z users like me OR a healthy discount on a trade in. Otherwise no, I'm happy with this phone and I plan to keep it for at least 3 more years.

Rumored to have a 5000 mAh battery now it's getting interesting

If the Price is right, I will.

Probably not.
I had 3 Zenfones in my life and they improved a lot of things,
but the camera it's still the thing I was expecting more. Always a good hardware and bad software.

Development is virtually nonexistent for this device so will never buys an asus product ever, the camera is a joke on Zenfone 5z so forget about buying the 6z

Since zenfone 6 changed the ui to a clean stock android, no bloatware, improve camera, giant battery, etc.
And with unlock tool and kernel source code already available, the custom rom community might get a lot of improvement than 5z as well.

Which MI to get?

Hey everyone, I'm debating upgrading to xiaomi from my note 4. I could need some help deciding.
I don't really care which snapdragon it is. Both the 820 and 821 are a massive upgrade from my note and that's doing everything fine.
I'd like something smaller, but have no problem with 5,7" if there are benefits to it.
I'd like the opportunity for some kind of stockish rom. I don't flash daily anymore and am very familiar with miui since the original htc desire days. So miui is fine, but having the opportunity to go for lineage or aosp if i feel that way would be great.
So basically:
mi5s, mi5 or mi5s plus?
The mi5 64GB comes in at 277€
The mi5s 64GB is 307€
The mi5s Plus 64GB is 357€
Edit: I might also throw the Note 2 into the discussion. It's 200€ more expensive, but the bigger battery and the epic looks really are attractive.
My open questions: there is basically no development for the mi5s atm. Is there something to be expected? Is the mi5 still competitive or is it slowly eol? And for all options: Is the Ram upgrade to 4/6GB worth the price tag or is 3/4GB fine for you?
Any input to help me decide is greatly appreciated:good:
Mi5 has better camera for video (thanks to OIS) than Mi5s, otherwise they are very similar. Mi5 is longer out and thus has more chances for a custom rom. It does look like there will be some CM support (or whatever it is now called) for the Mi5s, there is one build here in the forum.
No idea about the 5s Plus.
Memory management is hard to say, but Android loves to have ram, so in general it's better to have more than less. Then again, this really depends on the ROM too.

If the screen doesn't bother you, I would buy the mi5.
: Better camera
Cm support
Deeper development here in XDA
PS: I have the mi5s plus 6gb 128 and I'm stuck in MIUI that I don't like very much. I going to continue to use my axon 7 until he has cm support

Mi5 doesn't have better camera than mi5s!
The mi5 has OIS but apart of that nothing else is better. The MI5s camera makes much better photos.
In fact it's so fast that I almost never have to make a photo twice, I very rarely get a blurry picture.
I would get mi5s 64GB. The materials are much better.
CM is still WIP but when Xiaomi releases the kernel sources it will be a much better phone.
With the recent Stable Global rom it goes like butter, didn't notice any problems.
By the way, the MI5 is 257$, the 64GB mi5s is 288$ and the 128GB is 348$

I'm with @dabyd64.
Mi5s has better construction than Mi5 (Aluminum vs Ceramic).
Mi5s is a little heavier (around 15g) and around 1mm bigger at 3 axis (difficult to tell a diference side by side).
Mi5s and Google Pixel have the same camera sensor, one of best as today.
Mi5s take better photos and regarding video Mi5s have EIS (at 1080) that is working better than Mi5 with OIS.
It could be better if Xiaomi invest on image processing algoritm like google did on pixel mobile.
Right now, Mi5 has better comunity support because was released first, more users, and kernel sources already released by Xiaomi.
I doubt Mi5s will have better support than Mi5, but i'm pretty sure we get the major roms.
Mi5 has infrared and could work as a remote control, this is the unique feature loss on Mi5s.
For me, Mi5s all the way. I would avoid Mi5s plus, if you really want a proper dual camera implementation -> Huawei P9.
We have to understand that a dual camera solution is all about image processing. For me, Xiaomi implementation was a failure.
If you need 5.5" screen size i would go for oneplus 3t.
Mi Note 2 has an oled 5.7" curved screen with te same 1080 resolution, so lower pixel density.
I really hate curved screens, and it's a pain to protect those devices.
It has a bigger battery, but generally bigger screen more consume, on the other hand oled consume less than lcd, you have to analyse sot.
200€ more relatively to 300€ it's significative, i would say put 200€ aside for a new one later on.
Not OP, but I would like to say thanks to @BPSoft and the other people who answered this question, as I'm in the same boat right now. Want to upgrade from my Mi4, and considering Mi5 and Mi5s. But the price is too close.
Do you think it is worth waiting for Mi5s price to drop a little bit more before buying? I am not very keen on using it with MIUI8 (jury's out for future MIUI 9), so I would be waiting for a custom ROM (CM, AOSP, ...). What do you think?
Custom, somewhat stable, ROM could be a way off for the Mi 5s, as the kernel source hasn't been released yet. At least there is a global rom now for the Mi 5s, but I'm not sure if that can be bought preinstalled. Not a big thing, but maybe waiting one more week (until CES is over) might mean a tiny bit lower prices.
Mi5s is at its lowest price ever, though (about 265€ for me). So many decisions... but I think i'll go for it.
Even if not preinstalled you can always unlock bootloader and install the global ROM, corect?
This is correct. Actually, if you run the official China build, you can simply download the Recovery Rom to the phone, open the Updater app, select the rom and it will flash it. No unlock needed. Works also with some, but not all, "shop roms" (globalized non official builds).
I want to thank everyone who gave their opinions. It's much appreciated.
So, if its xiaomi, mi5s it's going to be.
Currently the axon 7 is an option too. But, i'm debating squeezing some life out of the note 4 and waiting for those sd835 phones to hit the market. Might be mid year, that those come. And sure enough xiaomi will have a new mi with this SoC. Then, either it's cheap enough or the mi5s will get even cheaper... decisions, decisions.

For a 5.5" screen size, i prefer Oneplus 3T, huge support here at XDA, 6GB Ram, SD821 instead of SD820, 64/128GB internal space, but without sd card support.
See here for a comparison:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8416&idPhone2=8067&idPhone3=7260
Regarding photo quality:
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=8416&idPhone2=8067&idPhone3=7260
As you can see 20Mpx says nothing about picture quality :cyclops:

I'm more optimistic, i expect "Mi6" release at March, like it was with Mi5. SD835 is expected. If i could, i would wait!

So it depends if you want OIS or faster capture. For my opinion cm development to mi5s Will take some time, soon we will have the mi6, so that's always the same thing , when we have some development there's another upgraded device that came out. We'll stay stock whit MIUI .

What I really liked is the screen / size ratio, I think it's one of the 'smaller' phones which still has really good specs, decent screen and of course dual sim.

Zenfone 5 vs 5z

Are there anyone who own or had used both 5 and 5z? I'm not sure how much difference between sd636 and 845. I know 845 is "superior", but how far? Camera, battery, performance, are they that noticable? They differ for about $150 at my place, so I'm wondering if it's worth the price (and the wait, since 5z isn't out yet here)
can you guys help me decide?
I will really appreciate some comments here as well.
They are basically the same phone but only difference is the processor.
I've had the 5 but not the 5z yet so I can't compare them directly. However I did compare performance between the Zenfone 5 and 2 845 phones (Oneplus 6 and Mi Mix 2s) while I had them. There is no question that the 845 phones are faster. The biggest difference I noticed is with opening apps. The 845 phones were pretty much instant but the Zenfone 5 took a little longer. It wasn't horrible but it was noticeable if you have or have used a phone with an 845 (or 835). This difference is why I sold the Zenfone 5 and am waiting for the 5z to be available in the U.S.

Yes, hence this question about the difference between processors

So the performance is noticeable at least. Thanks for that. I wish we can compare the camera and battery between Zen5 (636) and OP6, but since even Zen5z is quite different from OP6 with a same processor, I guess we can't do that to the camera result.
My current phone is Zen2 Laser, so I don't think I'll feel the difference since I haven't owned any 845 device. If it's not horrible, and if there's no difference in camera and battery (I'll still ask around and look for more reviews about this), I think I'll go with normal Zen5 for the next 2-4 years.
I still hope you can give more insight when your Zen5z arrived later
edit: from the other thread, I think Zen5z has a bit better battery, but not by much

Help Out in Choosing Between Between Note 5 Pro & Zenfone Max Pro M1

Hello Friends,
Could You Please help me out by Recommending a Device between Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Actually i am Currently Using MMX Nitro A311 with ResurrectionRemix ROM. And I need to upgrade to a New Device.
Actually Both the RNote5Pro and ProM1 both make a Tough Competition and with similar specs , making it really tough to choose from. So it is difficult for me in selecting one in my Budget of 15K.
I am Basically in to Info-Sec Field so I need a phone which I can Root Easily and install custom ROM(s) ,if needed. And I need a Decent Good Battery Backup & Processing Power so that I can manage my Studies and Work. And Want Complete Control of my Phone. And I need to Use My Next Phone for a Pretty Long Duration 2-3 Years.
I would Basically use my Phone for Calls, Chats, Youtube, Watching Tutorials, Reading PDFs and Camera is needed for Recording Purpose. Other than that I would use it for TESTING Apps and for Other Info-Sec Purposes.
Since I read that Xiaomi has some issues Now in Rooting and Now with that Anti-Rollback its now more critical.
So Please help me Out by Suggesting. And Leaving Your Kind Genuine Reviews.
Thanks in Advance,
Regards,
Rahul

Go for the 6gb variant of the Zenfone Max pro M1. Xiaomi is a headache in terms of unlocking bootloader. I got permission to unlock months ago but I'm still not able to unlock it. Planning to sell my note 5 pro and get Zenfone Max pro!
Recommending something can be biased unless you havent tried both and yes its tough choice to make. Now that 6 gigs version of Asus zenfone max pro is released it can surely out perform 5 pro and in your case for a device to stay as much as 2-3 years i would vote hands down for max pro m1 6 gigs since 4+64gigs will age by that time. only thing which was letting max pro down compared to 5 pro was camera which now said to be improved since asus isnt launching zenfone 5 in india so its they're best bit in budget segment market. Speaking of development on both phone should be the same since both are powered by same processor and are treble enabled.
and Yes I am frustated with unlocking bootloader and antiroll thing since its only way they make money by making people use their bloatware and UI which is otherwise in asus case
so verdict ASUS FOR THE GO.
100% Redmi Note 5 Pro
And
Mi A2 Coming Shortly

I actually sold my RN5 Pro yesterday and will get Asus. Left all the groups of Telegram too. It's not worth investing time in custom roms anymore since it's a lot of headache with anti3/4, unlock bootloader etc.
I've used the 4GB Asus variant for few days, exchanged my ph with a friend, I won't say it's bug free phone but there is no phone that's bug free. For Asus: Once you've got used to receive otas from oem, security patches every bi monthly, stock Android with few addons ( double tap), can unlock unofficially and relock for warranty, I feel Asus has a lot of advantage here.
I'm pretty sure few will tell you about prior issues they had specially with Asus Zenphone phs that were based on Intel cpus but I would suggest you to ignore. Asus has learned from such mistakes, went with SD this time which I'm sure will get good dev support if you're into flashing roms.
For me, getting a stock rom ph, easy to root/unlock bootloader just to use ad blocker, good battery life, decent hardware, no boatloader 20 days waiting, no anti3/4, no mi fans nonsense. I've heard the camera outperforms RN5P but I haven't checked about it since I'm sure all mid end phs does the social sharing job. I'm investing my money with Asus this time.
simple sir , go for asus if your main priority into custom roms etc , you can simply unlock and flash anything right after buying .
this redmi note 5 pro/ai maybe good at camera but asus max pro m1 seems had an advantages on other specs.

The only thing better with Asus is the bigger battery. I don't understand how it has advantage in other specs? It does not support WiFI a/ac nor does it have an IR blaster for example and there is no mention of presence/absence of Gorilla Glass on Asus. Now I have a RN5 AI, so this has better camera specs than all M1 variants, but the RN5Pro still has a slight advantage with 3/4gb vs 3/4gb variants.
Yes the Xiaomi made i d*ck move by implementing ARB without making possibility to disable it, but you can still flash custom roms just as you always did, it's the unlocking method that's a bit more confusing than it was.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just stating the facts, you can check the specs by yourself.
Of course being on the Xiaomi forums there has to be a bit of bias for it, but in the end you go for what you want/need/have money for. The devices are similar, what made me lean to this side was better camera specs (f/1.9 aperture, dual pixel focus and bigger sensor), WiFi support, IR blaster and a rich modding community. Now I never used Asus devices nor do I know it's modding potential and devs interest, but I guess it's going to be good enough since it's cheap. The RN5 got a head start though, a lot of good devs are here.

i own both devices sir , i buyed redmi note 5 ai at the end of May and recently last week asus max pro m1 , i didnt use ir blaster and i dnt really know what is wifi a/ac .
from both device what makes me choose max pro m1 because the battery can last longer than my rn5 about an hour + in same usage , its has rgb led notification , the bottom speaker was way to better than rn5 , dedicated memory slot so nice if im planned to sell my rn5 and use with 1 device only, easily unlock bootloader and flash it with twrp+root without worrying anything , and cheaper than my rn5
sorry if something not right here ,its my own opinion sir im still xiaomi user for more than 15 devices variant , just comparing it with my own experience of usage .
Just wait for MI A2.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention the separate slot for SD card, which indeed is nice to have and RGB led which I didn't know it has But since I only use one SIM that's not something I need and speaker wise, it's good enough for me
In the end, one has to choose based on his needs and preferences, I would go for RN5, but that's my 2 cents we are giving pros and cons for both anyway
From reviews that I saw, the Zenfone has a pretty slow fingerprint scanner than the RN5. But they might've fixed that in an update. If I was in India, I'd go for the Zenfone (I wanted to get it before RN5 but I'm not in India), simply for the bigger battery. I'm not much of a camera guy, all I care about is lag free UI, decent gaming performance, good battery life, and sleek modern design.
Redmi note 5 pro, never had any problems in terms of modding & stuff. Besides it's very hard to get your hands on a Zenfone Max M1 (at least here in europe). The choice is yours, both are decent and 4 + 64 will be enough also in 3 years!

Buying Samsung Galaxy S9+ instead of Xiaomi Mi 9?

Hello!
In few days I would like to buy a new phone. Right now, in my country, there are massive price drops of SGS9+/ Note 9 prices. So SGS9+ costs 536€ and Note 9 699€.
As You might know, Mi 9 costs about 466€ (6/128 variant). The thing is, that Mi 9 is almost unpossible to get from official distribution. There are only few pieces avalaible for sale every week.
In my opinion Mi 9 only advantages are newest Snapdragon 855, and better look (personal opinion), and under display fingerprint scanner. Camera without OIS is a little bit worrying.
My biggest concerns about SGS9+/Note 9, is Exynos which in benchmarks is slightly slower than Snap 845. But on the other hand I think that camera would be better, and despite being released over year ago (SGS9+), it still can show off with the new technologies.
If Samsung, then question is SGS9+ or Note 9? Note 9 has larger battery, stylus (sounds like a good idea, but in practice can't say how often I would use it) and a little bit telephoto camera. Would You say that it is worth to pay more?
I would like to hear your opinions regarding Samsung devices, and maybe even some of You has comparision to Mi 9
I will be grateful for any recommendations.
Thanks!

It depends on your usage, if you want a phone with stereo speakers, headphone jack and SD card slot, with higher screen resolution and higher front facing video resolution, and if you care about a more secure iris/face unlock and more reliable physical fingerprint scanner, go for the S9+/Note 9 (depends if you need an S pen). Otherwise go for the Xiaomi Mi 9. Personally, I prefer Samsung's software though. But since you can pay 699€, I recommend you to pay a few more and get the S10e, or wait for the S10 price to drop, it will be much better than the Mi 9...

I'd prefer Samsung, they have a better track record, especially on the security and spyware department.
Since you don't have access to the Galaxy so plus with the snapdragon variant that equals to worst camera and battery (I mean on snapdragon you are gonna be able to use the GCam mods with great alogirthm for Better photos, you can use the wide lens camera, better portait pictures etc! And the battery in my experience of the s9 (not the s9+ is just fine I am able t get 2:30hrs of sot time per charge in full HD )

It's the best phone in the 25k segment. Buy it in Flipkart discounted sales where price us as low as 22k. Good software, good cameras, a few minor bugs.
This phone will be getting the Android Q update when it releases.

hi,
I would say avoid it at the moment. There is much price gap with Zenfone 6 and it is a far better phone. If you dont want the Zenfone 6 you can even look at the Redmi k20 pro or the normal variant whichever come to India
I would say it depends on the price, for example in my country I manage to get it at a lower price that the pocophone f1( 350 USD).

Once the Zenfone 6 is available the 5z should drop to at least 300 to 350

Why anyone will think about purchasing a device which doesn't seem to interest xda developer. Earlier there were few hopes but customization of zenfone 5z almost always leads to bricking of device and there's little to no support for unbricking. You won't even be certified on Google Play once u root using the tool provided by asus, making the device completely unsafe for daily use, There are lots of device with great xda support, find out them and forget about zenfone 5z, believe me all they did with ZenUI is limited the device day by day with each new release and soon there'll a day when you hardly get to do anything apart from calling.

Its a very good phone with 845...and an OIS which Z6 lacks....I got 8GB-256GB for 24k in flipkart offer...Wanted to go for 1+7...but after looking at this deal ..i grabbed it...with latest pie update antutu score was 294500 ...Battery drains fast when you play games at high resolution....that is the only issue i found....
