UPDATE: SOLVED
This turned out to be an intentional feature, not a bug. Huawei actually has 2 different AI photography frameworks, and different phones use different frameworks. Click here to find out my detailed examination of multiple device models.
For context, here is the original post:
I'm currently using an Honor View 20 on 9.0.1.137, Camera app version 9.0.1.309 (previously 9.0.1.139) and Gallery app version 9.0.15.302.
The AI mode on the camera was working fine but for some reason the Gallery app can't properly detect photos taken with AI mode. Images taken with AI enabled no longer have that icon and the toggle to view the image with AI mode on and off has also disappeared, whereas in past devices I had this option.
As for the Camera app, I can still click on the AI mode icon to turn it on and off, and it will detect scenes. However, new photos taken with AI mode enabled and detecting a scene will no longer be marked as "AI" in the gallery and the toggle to view in different modes is gone. Also, I noticed that photos taken with AI mode enabled aren't that different to images taken without AI mode while on an Honor 10 the changes are dramatically different.
Weirdly enough, photos taken with AI mode on other Huawei devices sent over via Huawei Share do have the AI icon and can be toggled, however photos taken on my View 20 with AI mode will show up as normal photos when shared to other Huawei devices. This leads me to believe that while the AI framework is active, the Camera app is somehow no longer able to write AI information to photos it takes.
I have tried deleting cache and data for the Camera and Gallery app plus the HiAI system app, as well as resetting app preferences and rebooting. I have also booted into recovery mode and cleared cache. This did not help. I have heard that in the past, people have seen their AI icon disappear completely from their camera app but fixed it with a system update, however I am already on the latest Magic UI version available and cannot update. Is there any way I can fix this and restore proper AI functionality in my camera app? Thanks.

In the camera view, AI mode can successfully detect the scene, but is not applying any enhancements. The image looks no different than if AI mode were disabled.
When opened in the gallery, the photo is missing the AI toggle option.
In the gallery, the thumbnail is missing the AI icon, indicating that this is not an AI photo. Images taken on other Huawei devices and sent over to this device will correctly display the correct AI options.
From what I can tell, it looks like the AI scene detection is working, but enhancements are not being applied when I take the photo. Gallery can correctly detect AI photos taken on other devices, but AI photos taken on my Honor View 20 are detected as normal photos. AI photos taken on my device look identical to the same scene taken with AI disabled.
EDIT 1:
Resetting all settings and wiping/resetting the entire phone did not fix the issue. Right now I'm booting into recovery and will attempt a full factory reset.
EDIT 2:
Performing a factory reset and setting the device up as new did not fix the issue. This appears to be a deep-rooted firmware problem and can probably only be fixed with a software update.
EDIT 3:
Using the OTG dload method to update to firmwares 9.0.1.138 and 9.0.1.140 did not fix the issue. Both firmwares have the same 9.0.1.309 camera app, which leads me to believe that it's this particular build of the camera app that has the problems.
I think the problem is the camera app version. My View20 is running firmware 9.0.1.137 but I have camera app version 9.0.1.309 which is more recent than yours. This could be what is causing your problem.

I have both new versions but same problem. Also I never had AI sign on photos in gallery. hope they will fix that.
@NekoMichi, please try to compare 48 ai clarity and ordinary 48 mp photos, i just tried, no difference at all. I am thinking ai doesn't work.

I've just taken a standard 48MP photo and compared it against a 48MP Ultra Clarity photo, the clarity photo is a little overexposed but doesn't seem to be any more detailed than the standard 48MP photo. AI Night Shot however appears to work fine. I will do some more tests. In the meantime, can you please tell me the exact model number of your device and the Magic UI build it's running? Mine is PCT-L29 C432, 9.0.1.137

What is the hardware revision of your device? Mine's PCT-L29 C432. Is there a way to update just the camera app, or do I have to do that with an entire firmware update?
If all else fails, I might try backing up my system, manually updating to a newer firmware version using an OTG device via "dload", then setting up as new. For some reason builds 138, 139, and 140 are available for PCT-L29 online but not via OTA. Hopefully these contain newer iterations of the camera app with this issue fixed.
@NekoMichi mine is same as yours but c432e1r2p1.
I done some more research. On ai enabled photos in details I see little difference in rgb graph than on photos with ai disabled. I think it is rgb graph. But I also don't have ai toggle in gallery.

The difference in the charts is probably due to taking the two photos at slightly different times. The difference between a correctly functioning AI photo and a standard photo should be very significant and would be visible without having to inspect the histogram. I will attempt a forced system update later and see what happens.

Hope it will fix the problem. Expect to hear good news from you.
Before I go ahead and test the update, here is a quick comparison with another test device.
On the Honor 10 Lite, not only is the AI image brighter, the colours are warmer too. The AI has automatically switched to "plant" mode.
On the View 20, the AI image looks slightly brighter, but that might just be due to taking the two photos at slightly different times. Again the camera detected a "plant" scene.
Zooming in on an "AI Ultra Clarity" photo, there is no discernible increase in clarity over a standard 48MP photo.

Sorry, I checked just now and it appears my camera app was updated to 9.0.1.309 during the factory reset. Unfortunately, it has not fixed the issue.
So last night I used OTG-update to install 9.0.1.138 and 9.0.1.140, and unfortunately neither has fixed the problem (even after a full factory reset and setting up as new with all default settings). It seems that both firmwares use the same camera app version (9.0.1.309) so I think that might be why nothing was fixed.
Somehow I was able to access /system/priv-app/HwCamera2/ even without root (read only, no write access). I've dumped the contents of the app and the lib files, and will compare them with files from a working device to see if there are any major differences. It possible that the libraries for AI photography may be missing from my device somehow.
UPDATE 1:
After decompiling the HwCamera2.apk, I found that all the AI scenes are intact. They show the scenes that the AI camera is supposedly capable of detecting:

UPDATE 2:
I downgraded to 9.0.1.125 for the hell of it, because it contains version 9.0.0.201 of the camera app. While AI scene enhancements were still broken, the 48MP Ultra Clarity mode was fixed. Another weird thing is that no matter if AI mode is enabled or disabled, whenever I take a photo the thumbnail in the bottom-left will appear AI-enhanced, but switching camera views or opening the Gallery will cause it to revert to non-enhanced. This behaviour is retained even after I re-updated to 9.0.1.140.

The fact that the phone can correctly detect scenes and render them into the preview thumbnail in the bottom-left means that the image capture mechanism seems to be working fine. It's just that there's a problem saving that AI-enhanced image to the flash memory. This seems to be related to failure of the camera's frame buffer, but I can't tell if this is caused by software or hardware failure. I'll have to go and check this out with the retailer I bought this phone from.
I'll capture a logcat from my device later today, hopefully this will give us a better understanding of why AI enhancements aren't being written from the image buffer to the flash memory.
Additionally, it looks like the system service "Huawei HiAI Engine" is sometimes triggered by the camera but sometimes isn't. I'll be looking into this component as well. According to Huawei's official publications, the HiAI Engine is responsible for object recognition, image enhancement, and "super-resolution" enhancements. This sounds a lot like the AI photography enhancements and "AI Ultra Clarity" mode.
While I couldn't find any other people with this problem on the Honor View 20 besides the two of us, I found a few examples of similar problems on other Huawei phones.
On the Mate 10, several users complained about AI not working and not being able to fix it with a reset or cache clear. This appeared to have been fixed by a system update.
Similarly, the Honor 10 Lite received an update last month that fixed "an issue where Camera occasionally does not respond in AI photography mode".
This gives me hope that maybe in Magic UI 2.1 they fix this AI problem. Unfortunately, it could take a month before the update is released outside of China and it's a bit of a gamble if Honor are even aware of this issue on the View 20 given how rare it seems to occur.
As I saw here in store even Huawei P3 doesn't have ai toggle button on photos, but on other side P smart 2019 has. And honor customer service told me there is no toggle on view 20, but again I heard from some user here that he has it. So I am now pretty confused.

Interesting find.
On Huawei's website, they don't advertise the P30 or P30 Pro as having AI scene recognition for the camera, however screenshots of their camera app show an AI toggle:
Video reviews of the P30 Pro also show AI object recognition and AI scene detection working. It's a little weird for Huawei to not mention this in advertising. Could it be that only certain regional variant of the phone have this feature?
As for the P Smart 2019, it's advertised to have an AI scene detection feature, so it makes sense.
Video reviews of the Honor View 20 also show the AI toggle, so it confirms that we both should have that feature. I think Huawei's own service representatives aren't even familiar with their own products...
Quick question though - When you enable AI mode and point at an object, do you just get the icon at the bottom of the screen showing you the scene detection, or do you also get a short text description about the scene mode? On the Honor 10, I can see a text description, and the AI toggle works in the gallery. On the View 20, I only get the icon and don't have the gallery toggle.
So, a bit of a final update - I've gone into stores and tested multiple Huawei devices and can conclude that this isn't a bug but an intentional feature that's not been very well documented by Huawei. It turns out that while Huawei may advertise "AI Photography" on their phones as if it were a single unifying feature across EMUI/Magic UI, there are actually 2 different frameworks that apply to different models of device. Here's a quick summary.
Type A:
- AI picks out scenes and determines a set of enhancements that are saved as a set of separate metadata linked to the original image file
- Since the enhancements are a separate layer, the user can go into the gallery and disable/enable the AI enhancements even after taking the picture
Type B:
- AI scene and object recognition performs enhancements in real-time and adjusts the camera before the picture is taken, when the picture is taken the enhancements are written into the image file itself
- Because the enhancements are written to the image file as opposed to being a separate metadata layer, these pictures are treated the same as normal photos and cannot have AI toggled after they've been taken
In addition to the way the AI handles writing data, the enhancements themselves are also very different. Type A produces much more drastic changes to exposure and saturation across the entire image, and the changes are clearly visible to the human eye. Type B is more subtle, enhancing only certain areas of the image when needed (e.g. background, foreground subjects, moving objects), and so the differences aren't so obvious unless you really look close.
After my tests, I can say that older phones tend to use type A while newer models use type B.
Type A AI Photography:
- Honor View 10
- Honor 10
- Honor 10 Lite
- Huawei P20
- Huawei P20 Pro
- Huawei P Smart (2019)
Type B AI Photography:
- Honor View 20
- Huawei P30 Lite
- Huawei P30
- Huawei P30 Pro
The problem is that Huawei does not clearly define these differences in their technical specifications, instead marketing it all under the "AI Photography" umbrella term. To make matters even more confusing, both AI frameworks use the exact same user interface, so if you're used to one type and you use another phone, you would naturally expect the same user experience - hence how I initially mistook this for a bug in the software. And to make matters even more confusing, all of the internal frameworks use the exact same package identifiers, and sometimes even the identical version numbers. For example, HwCamera v.9.0.1.309 on the Honor 10 is actually different to HwCamera v.9.0.1.309 on the Honor View 20. It's only when you do extensive tests on a large set of devices and examine the actual internal components of the apps themselves can you finally discover that there are actually 2 different things happening here. And none of this kind of research should be left for the end consumer to do, when Huawei could have just made things clearer in the first place.
In my opinion, I prefer the enhancements made by type B because they're more subtle and natural-looking, but the implementation of using a separate image enhancement layer instead of overwriting the original image file by type A is better. Maybe in some future update they can allow non-destructive AI enhancements using the newer AI algorithms.

Hi guys, I just got my oneplus 5T today and i want to talk to you about the quality of the photos of this phone and how this camera setup is helping or not ?
For me, it's a waste of the second camera slot to use this "night camera module" ...
First of all i don't see the diference (using the pro mode and switch between the twos) and second, there is no other functions of the phone that use this second camera to improve anything (at least it shoud he use to combine two photos and result in a better pixel quality but since they have the same lens i don't think this helps either)
So what do you think guys ?

In my opinion, I think they should implement the same feature as the essential phone. Using both cameras to create on single and good looking picture. If they can, they could make the main lens take all the details of the image and make the 2nd lens take all of the light and then somehow merge both images to create a perfect one.
Probably never going to happen though......

They can't do it now because "the black and white sensor has had its top layer’s color filter removed. Without it, the sensor is unable to capture color, but its ability to capture light increases by 3x. This is especially helpful with low-light environments."(qualcomm clear sight)

The Galaxy A50 got the June security update in India earlier this week, promising the usual stability improvements along with a variety of security patches. But as we’ve been tipped by one of our readers via Twitter, the update appears to include a couple of extra features that go by unmentioned in the changelog. Specifically, firmware version A505FDDU2ASF2 seems to bring along Night mode and Super Slow-mo video recording. In addition to that, the phone can now scan QR codes from the camera app without requiring Bixby Vision, a feature that recently came to the Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S10 as well.
Galaxy A50 owners in India who have updated to the June security patch but don’t have access to these two new camera features should try resetting their camera settings. This was also the case for the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A40, which received a regular slow-motion camera mode through a software update and required a reset of the camera settings before the mode was actually usable. You can reset camera settings by opening the camera app, tapping the gear icon to open camera settings, then hitting the Reset settings option found by scrolling all the way to the bottom.
The update also includes fixes to a variety of vulnerabilities; some found in the Android operating system while others are affecting Samsung’s own software experience. You can read all about them in the detailed June 2019 security patch report.
Readers who have not yet received the update on the Galaxy A50 in India should try navigating to the Settings » Software update menu and tap the Download and install option. Otherwise, users can also download the update manually from our firmware database and update the smartphone using Samsung Smart Switch on a computer.
Super slow-mo video? What's that, because we already have slow-mo now.

It doesn't matter if he copy pasted the link, atleast he shared it before you even stated about the link. You don't always have to bang on, peace out.
Btw, this update also brings super steady mode in video recording, which is a great feature to have.
( You'll need to reset the camera to get nightmode, Super slo mo & Super steady video as suggested )
There's also a new metering mode added in pro mode, Not sure if it was there previously!
Wifi calling toggle is also added in notifications bar.
Can't fine the Qr code scanner toggle in the notification bar.
Cheers

There is a reason why every online article attributes the source. All I requested him to do was to include the source link as it is copyrighted content and there are limitations to how much of the content you can copy-paste as-is without ownership.
Also, I posted about the firmware release 7-8 hours before this post in the Official Samsung firmware thread as I don’t want to create a new thread for every release. I wanted to share the new camera features with proof of what it does and hence didn’t create a thread about it.
For those interested in night mode, you can check a sample of it here.

O you'll be shocked that Gadgets ndtv, gsm arena etc all have the exact same post, btw software update info wouldn't be claimed under copyright anyhow.
Night mode seems to be good, though a bit grainy it seems. Super steady mode which is added also seems a great feature.
Got any clues about qr code scanner in the notification panel, as mentioned in the post, I'm not seeing one! ?
Added landscape night shot for a good measure

Haven't checked it yet, but with this release the QR scanner has been integrated in the camera app, so like iOS you just need to point the camera at a QR code for it to open a page. Earlier, it could only be done through Bixby Vision.

I knew the bixby thing, So it's confirmed that Qr code is integrated in the Camera app itself unlike what the leak suggested it to be in the notification panel.
So just wifi calling is added in the NP, good !

I always get a video of 8s 333ms with a bitrate of 11.5 Mb/s and a size of 11.5 MB. The minimum and maximum framerate is 30 as displayed in MediaInfo in my case. However, since Samsung advertises the Super Slow-mo as 960 fps for 0.4s on S10 and 0.2s on the S9, 480 fps for 0.4s on the A50 sounds more in line with what Samsung wants to achieve.
Update: Okay, it seems your values are from the edited portion of the super slow-mo video. I got a minimum rate of 14 and a maximum rate of 616 which constantly changes depending on the part of video edited and the lighting conditions. The average framerate for the super slow-mo section is 480 fps which is what is advertised by Samsung.

Guys, any news about June update on A505FN versions?
It's the end of July, and I still haven't received June update, I'm still on May update.
Also, I tried searching for firmware on many sites, but all of them has only May update.
So, any news? Anyone here that actually received this update? Thanks

Ah thanks a lot for this man! I thought i might need to keep always on display and waste battery life. Forgot i had disabled this wake screen for new notification setting before the latest update.
Will root after lineageOS by @dantir gets more stable. Hope that version wont get abandoned like the previous version of Lineage. Thanks @dantir

Hopefully. Even an unofficial stable build will be fine. Hows the battery with this update? I updated with 100% battery, lost 4% in 10 mins. It was better before. Anyway i'll wait a full cycle, and then try a factory reset? Loved the battery life before, irrespective of the other bugs.
I am from android 9 and it was such a nice experience aside from that brightness bug, battery life was phenomenal
I upgraded to Android 10 and noticed exFAT is not support anymore.
In Android 9, I can use exFAT formatted microSD card. But tell me to reformat my microSD card when I upgraded to Android 10.
How is the battery on the new update , in android 9 i could achieve 8 hours on screen time , i hope it is not gets to 5-6 hours with the new update. And if someone can show the battery drain from aod and how the fingerprint scanner is working. Thank you in advance.

Hi all,
S20 Ultra here, have taken plenty of great shots with my camera, the quick updates since launch have fixed most issues people had at launch with the cameras but something that occasionally bugs me is a delay in capturing a photo after pressing the button, resulting in missing the shot.
Typical scenario - taking a photo of my kids , they move a lot so you dont have long to get a shot, I pull the the phone out, line up the shot and press the button and nothing, 1 second, maybe 2 and it takes the shot and its not the shot you wanted.
It certainly isnt all the time, sometimes the shot is pretty much instant, I am beginning to suspect its related to the auto focus, the phone doesn't focus quick enough or maybe doesn't think its focused (often it looks fine on screen) so wont take the shot quickly when you need it to.
Any ideas?

Yea it is the autofocus, gonna need to wait it out for updates, you can speed it up by disabling the AI like scene optimiser, HDR, shot suggestions, and any filters you have enabled from the top right icon above the view finder, mostly the selfie cam is having the worst issues with around a 5 second delay if there is a face in view at arms length, especially with a bright light behind you like a window
Jaysus!
I thought was just me. It's worst if you try to use the live focus. ¬¬

Is there a recommended source for gcam 8.4 that is stable and safe to use? We have both A52 5g and a52s 5g-s.
Hi,
on my A52s 5G (SM-A528B) most recent version of gcam that works is 8.1, anything higher force closes immediately.
I got the best results with this mod: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-bsg/

Yeah you can configure really a lot of stuff, though I didn't test the raw mode.
But I created a config with some moderate changes to image quality and general configuration for the different lenses of the device since the provided ones didn't work properly for me.
Could share, if you like.

Sure, many thx! I'll try to dig in the raw story, because this sensor definitely has more potential then the 8bit jpegs.
Here it is!
A few notes: The most relevant options I changed are in Settings -> Modules.
For the lenses to properly work I had to set the option "Session of photo modes" for each lens to 61448 OR 61444 (both work).
You can tune every lens individually there, which is a pretty nice option to have. Most changes are really subtle. I spent a lot of time with the night mode and the HDR/Image Processing settings. Its really just a base config on which you can build up.
Easiest way imho is to only change one option at a time and take test photos. You really can get lost in there but I rather enjoyed it!
Enjoy!

You're very welcome, I'm happy to be useful.
I have a problem with the latest version (now) the viewfinder just freezes after few seconds of opening the camera.
Tried MGC_8.4.500_A10_V6 and MGC_8.1.101_A9_GV1zfix
And I'm on the latest one ui 4.1

You're footer mentions Xiaomi Mi 9, but since you are asking here I am assuming you are using an A52s?
MGC 8.4 is not so interesting because it lacks many image quality features that the 8.1 series has. So MGC_8.1.101_A9_GV1zfix is the way to go with MGC.
For the A52s viewfinder freezing is a known issue that you have to work around. And in later 8.1 series they slightly changed the way it is fixed, which means older config files don't apply the fix correctly.
I think the config file shared in this thread earlier was very similar to the common luke config file, so I attached a version of the luke config file that also fixed the freeze on the GV1zfix version. You can load it by double tapping next to the shutterbutton (or from Settings|Configs|Load in the app).
(and there is endlessly more discussion about gcam on A52s in this thread).
Thread closed. Please continue your discussion here.
