OEM Unlock = Unlock Bootloader? - Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Questions & Answers

If I understand correctly OEM unlock means that it unlocks bootloader, right?
So I have the OEM unlock option in my Developer Options and I'm wondering why people are using adb to unlock the bootloader instead of just ticking OEM option?
Is it not the same?
Can I just tick the option and flash twrp, rom, etc.?

Hi, OEM unlock option in settings is just a switch that enables/disables the unlocking of the bootloader. You must first enable OEM unlock in settings and then proceed with the actual unlocking of the bootloader

Google puts a number of steps so you can't accidentally unlock your bootloader.
Enable developer mode
Enable OEM unlock
Unlock bootloader (using fastboot)

Usually in unlocked phones, bootloader can be unlocked using "fastboot oem unlock" command from platform tools. Android 5.1 in android one devices has a new security option in that, the above command works only when "Allow OEM unlocking" is enabled in developer tools. It's an added protection feature in case you lose your phone, the thief may unlock the phone and flash a new rom bypassing your pin/pattern lock.

Yep same for me.I tried to unlock with this allow OEM unlock off and it unlocked without problem, so I guess it doesn't work for our phones.

Do you have Secured lock screen (PIN, pattern, or password)?
It's useless if you don't have any of these setup.

root MZP

Hello,
i'am wondering what the best approach to root a MZP. What i understand there is a procedure via "fastboot oem get_unlock_data" and get a key from Motorola. And a second via Developer Settings ->" OEM unlock".
What is the difference?
thanks

Neither of them have to do with rooting, they have to do with unlocking the bootloader, which is the first step. Then you need to flash a customer recovery like TWRP, then you can flash SuperSu and have root.
ah right. ok,...but what does "OEM unlock"

It used to have to be done via a command, not it is built into Developers options.
Here read this to to better understand what unlocking your bootloader will entail.

Once your bootloader is unlock, then follow this one to flash TWRP and properly root.

I can't see the Oem unlocking option in developer options, is there a way to enable it that works? I have unlocked my device and recently reset it.

Question SIM unlock vs bootloader unlock

I had a carrier locked AT&T 6 Pro. I paid the balance, got it carrier unlocked and switched to T-Mobile.
Can I now unlock the bootloader of an ex-AT&T device,? Or just SIM unlock does not help.

You should now see the option to unlock the bootloader: in Developer Options, the option is called "OEM Unlocking".
But AT&T (and TMO) sometimes make this process difficult (glitches in the system, policy changes etc).
Is the OEM unlocking option greyed out?

Yes, it was greyed out earlier, but not anymore.

If it's not grayed out, then you can enable it, which means you'll be able to unlock the bootloader. Note that unlocking the bootloader forces a full wipe of your device. Toggling OEM Unlocking (and USB Debugging) doesn't do anything on its own other than allow you to unlock the bootloader.
So you can toggle those things, get everything ready - make backups of what you want to keep on internal storage, etc, and then when you're ready, proceed with any of several How To Guides in this section for how to unlock the bootloader.
