Contemplating buying Pixel 3 XL (Google Edition) - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I am contemplating buying Google Pixel 3 XL (Google Edition), and have questions. I am currently on Vzw's original unlimited data plan (grandfathered). My current og Pixel XL has magisk, which I installed, as well as the module for hotspot/tethering. And just for the record, the og Vzw unlmited data plan does not come with the hotspot. You have to pay for that separately which I do not want to do! ^wink^
Is this same magisk module available on Pixel 3 XL so that I can turn on the hotspot without having the actual service?
Thanks in advance.

You should just be able to bring that module over to the 3 xl, magisk works just fine. Magisk modules, for the most part, aren't device dependent.
What module is it? Is it still in the magisk repo or do you have the zip?

The module is called: Tethering Enabler, and the version I have is 14.0.0, and was created by stangri. I am unsure if it is in the Magisk repo or not. But I originally got it from within magisk's downloads area within the app.
Thanks in advance.

Modules are usually device agnostic... but there's another consideration. Module implementation has just completely changed within Magisk v19.0 and module developers must now recode using a specific API or risk being incompatible in the near future. The module you mention is not currently listed under "downloads" in Magisk settings, and his XDA thread has not been active for a while. Someone else modified his work (stargzrr11) and released v.15.0 but that was April of last year.

I got my 128gb Google edition Pixel 3XL about a month ago.
I too am on Verizon's unlimited plan (but I'm on the new one $80 a month).
I haven't even unlocked the bootloader yet because everything I used to use root for can now be done without it.
AdBlock, themes, tethering, Vanced YouTube, all can be done without root.

The real incentive to unlock the bootloader on a GE variant immediately is not rooting. It is so in the event you later decide to root, you won't be forced to completely wipe the phone. It also opens the door to dozens of tools you can use later on in case you get into trouble, including Google's own recovery images they publish every month. If a person never intends to unlock or root their phone, they can save themselves HUNDREDS of dollars buying the Verizon variant and switching to the carrier of their choice (if they wanted to). You buy a GE for the privilege of being able to unlock the bootloader and have ultimate control your phone. Lastly, non-root ad blockers are very limited in what they can do when compared to a root ad blocker.

Worthy replacement for the ls992 that is rootable? (wifi tether, no bloatware)

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I just got my new (used on ebay) LG G5 Sprint phone that was going to be an upgrade from my Galaxy S5 that I'm currently pretty happy with, but who does not want a newer faster phone?
Pros: Downloaded OTA Nougat
Pretty snappy phone and for $200 used it's a pretty good deal.
Cons: no free wifi tether, and you can't use PDA net foxit as a workaround on Nougat (Android 7.0)
No root available for the sprint version of the LG G5 (LS992) version.
My biggest reason to root is the unlocked tether via wifi, this seems to be even harder on Android 7.0 no matter the model of phone.
I do like sprint since I'm on a really good SERO plan with unlimited data for $50/month, and they have one of the better data roaming prices if I'm to lazy to change out my sim while I travel abroad. But there is no way I'll pay extra to unlock the wifi tether, then as a last resort I'll just go back to my old Samsung galaxy S5
Here are the questions:
What other new(er) sprint phones can currently be rooted? thinking of replacing this one for the HTC 10 or Galaxy S5, S6 Edge, but only if I can at least get free wifi tether, by preferable rooting and installing a custom ROM or by using PDA NET.
Is there a any workaround to enable free tether on Nougat? like PDA net? One option I was considering is keep my G5, downgrade to
Android 6.0 and just download pda net.
Also, since we can't root the GS is there a workaround to get rid of all the bloatware??
Any thought?
Thanks!!
Love my HTC 10. No Nougat yet but it should come any time now. If the Pixel worked on Sprint I'd consider it, but it has no microsd storage.
Lots of people like the V20, too. Heck, I still like my G3, though I could be persuaded to let it go...

Yes. HTC allows official bootloader unlocking, and the 10 forum has a cool post with tutorial videos for the whole process. I'm running tether, adblocking, and some xposed modules, but I'm switching to a Magisk ROM this week. No Nougat yet but tether and ad control is more important to me.
Me personally I found an used Galaxy S6 on Amazon for only $200 that I'm about to buy. I had one before but gave it up due to the battery life, but right now I miss having root dearly. I'll just use that while sitting back waiting for the crop of 2017 phones to pop up.

I'll be selling my LG g5 and deciding between the Galaxy S6 Edge or HTC 10, unless someone figures out how to root it in the next few days....such a pain that I have to sell the phone, but it's my own fault that I did not do my research before I bought it. I just assumed that all Androids had roots....
So if anyone want's a nice LG G5 running Nougat let me know

Im not entirely sure.
I have LG G5 (wife) and HTC 10 (me)... Installing root/s-off on HTC is relatively painless. Not much to complain about the HTC 10, seems to do everything well. I average about 4hous of screen on time with Viper rom (last 6.0.1 version) Those that are running their 7 roms seem to think its an improvement still.
Only got the LG g5 because we were able to upgrade at Best Buy for less than $1 and Sprint was doing away with upgrades on contract

Magisk support

This is probably premature, but what are the chances Magisk will support the 2XL? I see support for the v1 Pixels was announced recently. You think it'd be feasible to use the existing Magisk version when my 2XL arrives?
don't flash anything
until they confirm it works
the pixel has Extra things that other phones don't the dual boot partition and some add security
but the pixel 2 have them
so i guess that dev may work on them faster than before
Yeah- That's what I expected. I wasn't about to do anything stupid until there's some consensus that it'll work properly.
Yeah, I'm hoping that since devs have had a year to try to work with the a/b partitions and extra security elements, things will be quickly adapted to the Pixel 2. On the other hand, I was really surprised to discover that after a year there is no official Lineage OS for the Pixel 1, root is still kind of complicated, and using TWRP also has extra complications and issues; that doesn't bode so well for the Pixel 2.

I read that it only took so long because John couldn't get a Pixel in his hands until recently. Once he got it, it took him merely days to get things up and running.

Are you talking about for root or TWRP or Lineage or Magisk? Which dev is John?
I'm sure it'll work on the Pixel 2 phones eventually. It would speed up the process if someone actually donated a Pixel 2 to the dev to work with.

Is Verizon S8+ development dead?

As the title says.
Is there no hope?
Lol there has been no Verizon s8+ development... they have these bootloaders so locked down now that there really is nowhere to go anymore. At least there is jrkruse who develops what he can with limited root options and no BL unlock but this has kind of been the state of all Verizon phones for the last few years... They've really murdered any type of options for these phones. Tmobile ever gets there network up to par I'm out

Go google pixel ii !!!!!!
What exactly are you asking? The Verizon S8+ HAS root. As the poster stated above, it does NOT have an unlocked bootloader. However, there's still a LOT that can be tweaked, themed, overlayed, etc.. I, for one, am very pleased with how far the guys have gotten with the 'development' of this phone.
I'm asking whether there is any hope for unlocking the bootloader? Or at the very least, getting systemless root?

Most likely not. With pixel 2 and 5T on the scene now that's where the rom action is. SuperSU doesn't even work on the pixel 2 yet anyway. It hasn't been updated yet and with Chainfire retired now updates maybe slow to come by. S8+ is actually a good phone to have for root if you get it from your carrier. Nice to know now we have Xposed and Oreo to jump back and forth to for now. Heck I would never have thought I'd have more options with Samsung than I did with LG.

I'm guessing this should work on the Verizon variant? It's a Snapdragon, at least.
Too bad we can't use Magisk on this. And no way to reset the Knox counter yet. If it's even possible....

Yes, I've used Xposed on the SnapDragon Verizon variant, just install it with Flashify. Just know that it will trip all (3) SafetyNet checks after it is installed.

best way to tether on rooted 9.0?

Am I magisk 16. 7. Rooted Android 9. 0. What is the best and easiest way to tether? It seems the tethering enabler mod no longer available. Am on verizon Grandfather unlimited plan. Thanks!

Worked for me I'm on the old school Verizon plan. I just edited the build prop in Root Explorer all good.
I can confirm this. Build prop edits have been working since I upgraded to Pie. Same plan, grandfathered in as well. :good:

How do I edit it?
I'm in the same boat. I've looked everywhere, I'm not very good at it. I'm very sad with this situation.
I was torn between getting a Note 8 or the Pixel 2 XL. Then when I learned the Note 8 doesn't play ball (the Verizon version) when rooting, I went for the Pixel thinking "If there's a phone that can be rooted, this is the one". Just to learn the how evil Verizon is regardless the phone model.
Man... was I crushed when I tried to tether after rooting... It doesn't work. And I still can find a way to do it. It's so nostalgic to remember when I'd fire up WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod in my Note 2, and now I have to settle for FoxFi in my unrootable Note 4 praying it won't stop working (like it has done several times before). This was another reason why I decided to leave my beloved Note 4 behind, so I could stop worrying about depending on one single app for tethering. Now I'm trapped in between a new rooted phone that can't tether and an unrooted one that does, but might lose the capability at some time. Also, I don't like the new Direct Hotspot options in FoxFi.
I'm carrying 2 phones around right now for no reason. I'm so sad. Not being able to tether the way I'm used to is the only reason that keeps me from completely transitioning on to the Pixel. I can't figure out what that build.prop is. Please some help. Thank you.
Regards.

Verizon Pixel 2 XL; root?

Haven't seen anything about this since August and I'm not hopeful at all, but is there any chance of a root method for the Verizon Pixel 2 on Android 9.0? Also, I bought one used so I'm not even sure if this is the Verizon model so I'm wondering how I check?

See if you can oem unlock in developer options. If you can then you can probably unlock it with fastboot.

It doesn't look like there's a (or ever will be) a root method for the Verizon variant. Especially considering the Pixel 3 is out and being that the Pixel 4 is probably going to be coming out in about 8 months, it is so highly unlikely that it's almost set in stone.
But as for your inquiry on how to check what model you might have, a website that many of us here use when we were first determining what variant we would get -- usually in the circumstance of getting it repaired and RMA'd -- is this one: http://www.imeipro.info/check_lg.html
Hope this helps...

Yeah...the usual "launchers" are the only options i'm aware of; i'm sure there are multiple others. I used to use, and still hear, good/great things about Nova Launcher -- but, then again, it's been since my Motorola Droid 3, so.....take it as you will....

@Digital_Cold on twitter just released source code for his PoC OneClickRoot application for pixel 2 (and possibly other phones, no other has been tested yet), which installs a version of magisk, but it is unrooted on reboot, like iOS jailbreak methods
EDIT:
You have to have the September patch of Android Q or earlier, as it is fixed in the October patch
