Verizon Pixel 2 XL; root? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Haven't seen anything about this since August and I'm not hopeful at all, but is there any chance of a root method for the Verizon Pixel 2 on Android 9.0? Also, I bought one used so I'm not even sure if this is the Verizon model so I'm wondering how I check?

See if you can oem unlock in developer options. If you can then you can probably unlock it with fastboot.

It doesn't look like there's a (or ever will be) a root method for the Verizon variant. Especially considering the Pixel 3 is out and being that the Pixel 4 is probably going to be coming out in about 8 months, it is so highly unlikely that it's almost set in stone.
But as for your inquiry on how to check what model you might have, a website that many of us here use when we were first determining what variant we would get -- usually in the circumstance of getting it repaired and RMA'd -- is this one: http://www.imeipro.info/check_lg.html
Hope this helps...

Thanks man! Any suggestions on how to customize stuff with apps that work without root? I thought Substratum worked without root, but I guess not.

Yeah...the usual "launchers" are the only options i'm aware of; i'm sure there are multiple others. I used to use, and still hear, good/great things about Nova Launcher -- but, then again, it's been since my Motorola Droid 3, so.....take it as you will....

@Digital_Cold on twitter just released source code for his PoC OneClickRoot application for pixel 2 (and possibly other phones, no other has been tested yet), which installs a version of magisk, but it is unrooted on reboot, like iOS jailbreak methods
EDIT:
You have to have the September patch of Android Q or earlier, as it is fixed in the October patch

Looks like some good news may really be coming (Nougat)...

Looks like the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 will soon get Nougat as the Android 7.0 update for the handset (model number XT1585) has been certified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

I've come to terms with the likelihood that this phone will never see root. And if it does, there will be little to no development for custom roms or other goodies. I am to the point where I think the glory days of rooting and having cool software hacks that actually improve the phones are behind us. Now my opinion could be, because my last three phones have been locked down on Verizon, and my Razr M once unlocked never had great builds. The builds it did have had issues due to bootloader changes and my lack of willingness to downgrade the bootloader once other changes were made. As I recall. Still excited to see Nougat coming at least.

Well since Verizon just got rid of 2 year contracts for everyone so no subsidized phones I won't buy another carrier phone. My wife has the pixel xl and loves it. I will be going Google not so much for the unlocked bootloader more for immediate updates. Screw carrier and manufacturer taking forever to update or decide not to update (Droid Maxx 5.1 I'm looking at you).

How does the Bluetooth SIG certification affect my phone?
I use Bluetooth with my truck and some earbuds...... I don't see where I would see extra functionality.
Does not affect your phone. It's just a way how info about update leaks. Every phone/update needs to pass certification before is released.

Did the Pixel XL not take off as well as the Nexus 6P?

Just wondering how the Pixel XL did against the Nexus 6P?
I'm looking to upgrade to the S8+, but now I'm thinking to wait for the Pixel XXL.
It did better overall but we don't know how much since Google doesn't reveal. Also issues with availability did not help.

The fact they could not keep stock of the 128Gig model, I think they under estimated demand.
Still love the Pixel XL even though new phones have been replaced.
I believe it sold a lot better because of how much they marketed it and it was being pushed by Verizon who has the most subscribers. I don't think they've published actual numbers to support this, but they definitely sold more units.

Agree, also the 5x and 6p were loaded for bear. As for the Pixel / XL I believe (my beliefs only don't go flaming) the slots for flashing are causing issues for those not totally familiar with the proper commands, monthly updates breaking twrp and root, SafetyNet breaking with each update, Verizon locking their bootloaders and the biggest.. The phone works great without a custom rom or kernel.
So if you desperately need root then I believe a lot of people are simply rooting stock so they can use ad blocking or feel they have total control over their device. (until they brick it but that's another discussion) I've really never seen so many experienced rooters and users here running stock. I wouldn't even unlock the bootloader (well I can't with Verizon) even though I wouldn't mind having the ability to do so for the future. So why would the devs spend time making a custom rom when there are limited users willing to use it?
Someone should make a poll of how many people who are experienced in rooting, unlocking, crack flashing (haven't heard that term in a while) etc. previous devices are now staying stock.
Rooted every device previously: But now..
1. Running Pixel / XL stock bl locked
2. Running Pixel / XL stock bl unlocked
3. Stock rooted
4. Custom rom
Might be interesting. My poll is number 1. The results might give you a clue as to why development is lighter for this device.
They still can't keep up with the demand 6 months later, that should answer the question

Is it really large demand or just really short supply. Google has done this with every phone since the Nexus 4. They have never had enough supply.

Good point. Do you think Google cares about devolpment any longer? Or was this a test of how they can now make a great phone that people want who don't care about root? Thus the high cost. I think dev is basically over as you say.

It should basically be the same device with updated hardware specs and Android O. What pitfalls are you referring to? If it's the distribution channel then yes, that was a problem. But as for dev support that assumes the low inventory was the factor mitigating development. I don't believe it was. The device simply doesn't need root to function superbly. That's why I think most of us rooted our Nexus devices, battery life and performance. (well at least I did) Besides, the price was like $300 not $800. Ok, some of us can't live without Adaway or Titanium but you don't need a custom rom for that.

That someone should be you, it was your idea I too am curious about the results. Up until Sunday I was a number 2 (rooted, though). I got bored and flashed a custom ROM but it was not necessary at all. You're correct when you say, this device functions damn near perfectly in its stock configuration. First Android phone I've ever used or owned that I can say that about.

I really don't think you have much to worry about then. Personally, I'd take a dozen of them and give them out to everyone I know since no one I know even knows what a bootloader is, no less root.
I have a VZW Pixel locked bootloader and I have no regrets. I recently had to return the one I got for $240 over 2 years for a warranty replacement. They sent me another Verizon model but I could unlock it this time. Must have slipped thru the cracks. I did flip the switch but I won't unlock it until I no longer have it on a network at which point I'd play around with stuff and not worry about performance or soft bricks. I've found no real reason to unlock it while using it as my DD.
But as you say, that's just you and this is just me. Neither of us is right or wrong, it's just how we do things these days. I will not pay $650 just to have a device that I can bl unlock when I won't unlock it anyway. Under $300 and $360 for the 2 XL is a tremendous deal. Other than on XDA I doubt there are many who even care about bl at those prices. You won't get that from Google and maybe not even from Verizon this year. We'll see.

Not yet but hopefully soon.
My bet is there will never be a bootloader exploit for the VZW bootloader's. This time I went direct with Google.
I ordered a Pixel 2 XL from Verizon last night about 9:00pm and already have it in my hands and activated. I'm not one of those that has to have an unlockable bootloader either. I purchased from Verizon because it was 50% off by trading in my Verizon Moto Z Force. Lately I've switched camps from must have unlockable bootloader to don't want unlocked bootloader. I prefer to remain stock and take OTA's without issues. My past experiences have taught me that the stock software untampered with performs better and more reliably than any 3rd party ROM ever will. My only reason for unlocking to begin with was ad blocking and removing unwanted apps. You can block ads with "VPN Hosts" app on an unrooted phone and I don't feel the need to remove software any more. I just don't open what I don't use. I haven't tried to unlock the bootloader on this new phone but I suspect you cannot.

Very hit or miss. The quality control is poor. If had each except the five. Two of my kids still using my old ones and they are holding up well but it's a total lottery. That's been my experience with every model they have released.

I'm strongly considering ordering one from VZW because of the current promotion. I had resided to keeping my Pixel XL, but now that I know I can take an old spare phone and get 50% of a new pixel 2 XL, I'm very tempted. I have a Pixel XL with an unlocked bootloader, but it's been unrooted for at least the last 8 months and I haven't otherwise taken advantage of the unlocked bootloader so I don't think I'd miss it. I love the stock ROM, the seamless update process, and decreased vulnerability.

There is one thing about the Pixel 2 XL you need to be aware of. The screen colors are pale and not very vivid. As a result the display does not look as good as other phones. Do some research on that before you buy to make sure you can live with it. I'm ok with it but I'm sure others may not be.

Is Verizon S8+ development dead?

As the title says.
Is there no hope?
Lol there has been no Verizon s8+ development... they have these bootloaders so locked down now that there really is nowhere to go anymore. At least there is jrkruse who develops what he can with limited root options and no BL unlock but this has kind of been the state of all Verizon phones for the last few years... They've really murdered any type of options for these phones. Tmobile ever gets there network up to par I'm out

Go google pixel ii !!!!!!
What exactly are you asking? The Verizon S8+ HAS root. As the poster stated above, it does NOT have an unlocked bootloader. However, there's still a LOT that can be tweaked, themed, overlayed, etc.. I, for one, am very pleased with how far the guys have gotten with the 'development' of this phone.
I'm asking whether there is any hope for unlocking the bootloader? Or at the very least, getting systemless root?

Most likely not. With pixel 2 and 5T on the scene now that's where the rom action is. SuperSU doesn't even work on the pixel 2 yet anyway. It hasn't been updated yet and with Chainfire retired now updates maybe slow to come by. S8+ is actually a good phone to have for root if you get it from your carrier. Nice to know now we have Xposed and Oreo to jump back and forth to for now. Heck I would never have thought I'd have more options with Samsung than I did with LG.

Yes, I've used Xposed on the SnapDragon Verizon variant, just install it with Flashify. Just know that it will trip all (3) SafetyNet checks after it is installed.

Don't you have 15 days to decide? Run through the updates and mess with it for a week. You don't like it send it back. This is kind of an open ended question that no one but you can decide on. Why would anyone here be able to tell you if you should buy an iPhone?

For what it's worth for the hundreth time it seems this question has come up in the last few months:
I haven't had any of the major issues others have had on any months' update to the Pixel 6 Pro (October, November, December, January, and now February). A few very minor things, but nothing with signal like some less fortunate folks, and absolutely no problem with the fingerprint reader, ever.

Not sure if you know or not, but if you got your P6P from Verizon, you know you cannot unlock the bootloader right?
Outside of that, I have had very little problems with my P6P (Google unlocked bootloader version, on Verizon).
I'd say use the majority of you "return period" to play with and see if your device has any of the bug/issues. or shortcomings you don't want to deal with until fixed.
If you have a VZW bootlader locked device, many of the problems associated with rooting and flashing factory images you won't have to deal with.
As far as the other issues, only you can decide whether you have any of the issues, whether you're willing to deal with them until they're addressed, or if they make your new device no fun to have.
tl;dr
some users have a ton of issues with their P6P, others, like myself, have very, very few issues. I love the device, I expect hiccups with cutting edge tech so I'm not miffed about the learning curve

Not sure if you know or not, but if you got your P6P from Verizon, you know you cannot unlock the bootloader right?
Outside of that, I have had very little problems with my P6P (Google unlocked bootloader version, on Verizon).

I can never unlock the bootloader, even when it's paid off?

Sorry to inform you, if you purchased the device through Verizon, that bootloader is locked pretty much forever.
My advice: return that puppy faster than the speed of light, get an unlockable bootloader P6P from Google. They have 0% financing available if you don't purchase it outright.

To clarify further, Verizon's devices have for the entire life of Android not allowed the bootloader to be unlocked. The more common cases of Verizon devices being rooted were without unlocking the bootloader - they were worked around by vulnerabilities that were found in those devices. Later on, there were two or so devices that either had a time-limited window where folks stumbled on a way to get the bootloader unlocked on a Verizon device (I did so on my Pixel 1 on Android 7.10 - Android 7.11 patched the vulnerability - just for an example), or other outright hacks that usually have to be paid for someone to remotely access your computer and phone in order to root them.
My Verizon LG G3 VS985 and LG Tablet 8.3 VK810 used a method called "Stump" to work around the unlockable bootloader, for another example.

For 95% of the population, they'll never unlock their bootloader, which is fine. My grandparents and my family will never unlock their bootloaders. But the one thing I always bring up is repairability. what happens in 2 years when you need to re- flash the phone? Nope. Not Possible with a Verizon model (only ota updates, where most of the time it won't fix your issue).
But I agree with the other comments, use it for 10 days and see how you like it. Only you can decide. If we said that 7% of people experience some small issues and 3% experience one major issue, what would you do then? Not try out one of the best phones ever made? Only you can decide. and this question comes up a lot on reddit because people read the bad and not the good.
(6 Pro - No issues except for Bluetooth Hi-res LDAC 990kbps Playback which will be fixed in 2 months)
