Hi,
I have a Nexus 5x and I know that is an old phone, but I want to still use it as my main phone. Lately I experienced very annoying lags and I'm tired wiping it every 3-4 months to make it smoother. I'm on stock 8.1. I think the main issue is that this phone has only 2gb of ram and it runs out quickly...
So my question is: is there some way to make it smoother? Installing custom rom (even older than 8.1) will help me? Or maybe stock but older than 8.1? Or some other tricks and tweaks?
I don't play games (only have one - forge of empires, it's very static game), I use Fb Messenger, what's app, Instagram, evie launcher, Spotify, twitter, Medium, chrome, bank app, YouTube, SwiftKey and some of Google apps. That's it, I'm not a heavy user. Oh and my phone had a bootloop that was fixed about 2 years ago.
Any recommendations?
Thank you in advance,
Simon.
@brylcio16, flash a slim custom-ROM: Lineage (Oreo), Groundzero or Cypher or AEX (Pie) +lowest GApps you need. 2MB RAM isn't so much, but enough for a slim layout.
You can try LineageOS 15.1 . I'm using this rom for almost 2 months and haven't face any lag in any single day. I am also a normal user just like you. This rom also provides weekly security updates and believe me, it's just buttery smooth. If you flash this rom, try to flash nano or pico gapps.

Hello,
I know that there are a lot of similar threads about this but none of them had the exact same problems. I'm asking you for patience as my time is really limited and I can't really browse around the forums or I could only find same vague solutions.
Before anything else this is my setup: gsm galaxy nexus, 4.2.2 AOKP milestone 2, franco kernel, LMT for pie controls, nova launcher prime and only a few essential apps like: facebook, swiftkey, dropbox, whatsapp, viber, quickoffice, some medical apps and so on, nothing special about this and no games installed.
Ok, the problem goes like this. Two weeks ago my phone started acting weird. It's slow, the battery drains fast (not even 8 hours of low usage), sometimes it gets really hot without even using it.
Most of the time I only have around 20-30 mb of free ram. I tried to "greenify" apps like dropbox and franco kernel updater but nothing changed.
Any idea? Any advice? Maybe you could recommend some other rom or kernel i could try? I tried PA a few months ago and the performance was just horrible. I really don't have enough time to try and flash random roms so that's another reason I'm asking for your recommendations.
I don't need high performance for gaming or things like this but i need it fast enough to open some .doc/.docx or .pdf documents or the usual apps.
Thank you!
Haven't you tried just wiping everything and re-installing your current ROM?

Oh... I forgot to mention that.. I tried that before but after 2 or 3 weeks it just goes back to this.
Hey there!
I have a ZE551ML (2.3GHz/64GB/4GB). Like most of the Zenfone 2 users, I have had two major issues on this phone. The battery drainage and the RAM leakage, both caused by the dreaded Android OS.
Earlier we blamed it on the 5.0 Stock Lollipop firmware, hoping it will get fixed with Marshmallow. But now on the beta MM, I continue to have the same issues (I cleaned flashed).
But thanks to Marshmallow's new Memory manager, I saw that the kernel has taken up almost 1GB of the RAM. (For comparison, the OnePlus One MM drains around 200MB). And I'm sure, whatever causes this to happen is also the culprit behind the Android OS battery drainage.
Now maybe, we could blame it on the Intel CPU, since most apps are optimized for Snapdragon devices. But then, wouldn't it affect all the Zenfone 2s with Intel CPUs? Why is it that some have excellent kernel performance?
Since I'm not a developer, I couldn't dig more into the situation, but I hope some developer will see this and help us out. It's a wonderful phone except for the Kernel hogging up the battery and the RAM.
That's all folks!
I leave stock for CyanogenMod about 1 month (right before beta tester receive MM test) and I think kernel isn't a big problem. The problem is the UI. And it bloatware. I have to disable almost every bloatware (since I didn't root)
Android 5.0 itself having memory bug that using a lot of RAM for animation, turn off transition animation in developer setting to mitigate this problem, and it can be fix with an optimize. But I don't know why ASUS don't fix it.
And another RAM hogging is ZenUI Launcher. A lot of useless function that you don't really need, and it may use up to 300mb of RAM. And it may make kernel use more RAM. Try to use a different lightweight launcher for a while (1 day or maybe few day).
When you reboot your phone, ZenUI Launcher using 30-40mb of RAM, but the more you use, the more it hogging your RAM. You can really tell it by using for a while and after running some casual apps like Facebook or Messenger, ZenUI launcher will have to reload everything, and gaming, it usually have to reload the game when I have to listen/make a phone call or reply a message.
Sometimes you receive some warning/suggestion like: "Something leaked? Protect your privacy now!", and this is the most useless and tricky function when it suggest you to install CM Security or something Security which is actually quite useless and it may/will steal something from your phone.
I'm using CyanogenMod, and it kernel source provided by ASUS. And developers make it great. There are some bugs, but acceptable and usable. When I go to CM, I could play games and use Facebook or do something elsse at the same time which I couldn't do at stock.
ASUS could make their phone better, but no, they have to sell something, and it's the next generation. The Zenfone 3. They have to make people thinking: "My phone is slow, I have to buy a new one, and yeah, I like this ZenUI, and Zenfone 3 is here, price also pretty good, I will get that Zenfone 3".
Love all about this phone expect the annoying lag when typing using SwiftKey. Anyone else having the same. I know I could simply try another keyboard but am sold to SwiftKey. Been using it far too long but the typing lag is terrible.
SwiftKey (normal and beta) also lags horribly on the S7 Edge. It seems that the keyboard cannot free enough memory from other apps (which they even say on their support site), so you have to kill them yourself.
Shame though, since that really prohibits the instantaneousness you'd expect (and need) from a keyboard.
I suppose it all boils down to Android (6) 's memory management, right?
Have you flashed any ROMs or anything? I'm on Resurrection Remix (CM Rom) and phone is beyond fast and smooth. Things like Swiftkey and Snapchat are fast/smooth with no lag what so ever. Those two had some bad lag on my HTC 10.

Same for me, with RR and Boeffla Kernel. No lag with Swiftkey Beta, except when i open the smiley page.
I am on stock 3.2.6, unrooted. Swiftkey works smoothly without any lags.
Using Swiftkey since day one and never experienced any kind of lag. Running FreedomOS 1.5.1 with blu_spark kernel (previously had ElementalX and stock before that) - Swiftkey always worked perfectly with all OOS/FreedomOS versions and all kernels.

SwiftKey lagged really bad for me so I just use Google Keyboard now.
Thanks for all your responses. I think for me the issue with SwiftKey becomes more apparent as I do a lot of typing on my phone. I think I will try and wipe my SwiftKey account today and see if that will help.
Maybe reinstall the app (or wipe cache) while you are at it, for me it is also buttery smooth.
I found the solution for my OP3 to be disabling as much non-essential functions as possible.
I changed Flow to Gestures, disabled long press for accents.
much more snappy. although there's still a minor lag when switching languages, that I never had on my previous Zenfone 2
I bought a Nexus 5X yesterday and I installed PixelROM on it. I noticed even with stock ROM that the RAM is almost full, 1.5GB out of 1.8GB being used constantly, which makes it almost imposible to multitask. I can't start 3 apps at once because one of them will surely restart after I enter it for the second time.
Is there a workaround for this? I come from a Nexus 5 which didn't have such problems.
PS: Android OS seems to use 600MB constantly, being the most resource hungry process.
I consider PixelROM a stock + extra features. Try SAOSP, SlimROM or Lineage OS. Custom kernel might help, too. The last solution is app LSpeed set to multitasking.
Edit: Almost forgot PureNexus ROM, try that, too.

I am looking for a stock like ROM rhat can give me the features that the Pixel has but for less money
I just got a pristine P600 from Ebay. Looks brand new but of course, it's on Lollipop. I am running Lineage 14.1 on couple phones and it runs fine. Just wanted to check here and see if the Lineage users are happy with the way it runs on this tablet. I've got the files downloaded and ready to go once I get some positive feedback. OTOH, if you tried it and don't like it (or something didn't work as it should), I'd like to hear about that also. Main usage with be surfing with Chrome, reading NYTImes, watching movies on plane trips, and occasional shopping on Amazon and Ebay. Thanks.
I have a P605 and a P607 running Lineage 14.1 and Resurrection Remix respectively and I won't go back. Both run smooth and fast. I watch Amazon Prime, use VLC for videos, Instagram, Chrome, etc with no issues. The only thing not working is the Samsung s-pen thing. The pen works great but not the auto touchwiz stuff, but I never really used that anyway. All thanks goes to Davidmueller13 for his excellent ports. I've tried the Android Oreo (8.0) but too many things do not work yet (gps I use a lot) so I went back to 7.1.2.
Good Luck, YMMV as others are doing ports for your P600 but I'm sure they are excellent devs also.

Dont the wifi version of this tablet and the LTE versions have different processors? I have the wifi and Resurrection laggs really bad for me. I tried different governors and what not and nothing helped. Switched to the official Lineage 7.1.2 and it is definitely better, but still kinda laggy.
I have the P600 as well. Tried LineageOS but I keep getting bugs. Ressurection Remix and AICP run very smooth for me with the default interactive governor. I've watched movies and browsed with no lag and it saves a ton of battery compared to TouchWiz.
Right now I recommend RR because users have been getting crashes lately on AICP.
I just got the same thing.. Possibly from the same vendor???? It had twrp installed and they didn't reset it oproperly so it kept two backups still from previous owners. I couldn't get it to update through the settings menu, so I flashed the lp bootloader, then flashed LOS 14.1 and its running fantastically. No Problems whatsoever. Pertaining to your question, I wanted to know, what are the optimum settings to run autodesk sketchbook pro/ Corel painter, infinite studio and record my screen activity? I've gotten screencam from the fdroid repo and want to simultaneously record my screen activity while I draw and post art lessons on YouTube/facebook etc etc.
What does 'force GPU rendering' do? Does screencam run as a background process?
What is an adiutor and how do I go about optimizing my hardware using the one suggested in the official los 14 thread?
Not to hijack your question, but it all seemed pertinent to here so I figured I'd post here instead of a new thread. Thoughts?
I'm having zero problems with s pen
A bit old thread, but if you still need opinions, let's keep track of the situation here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga.../galaxy-note-10-1-2014-edition-p-605-t3711942
