I bought a Nexus 5X yesterday and I installed PixelROM on it. I noticed even with stock ROM that the RAM is almost full, 1.5GB out of 1.8GB being used constantly, which makes it almost imposible to multitask. I can't start 3 apps at once because one of them will surely restart after I enter it for the second time.
Is there a workaround for this? I come from a Nexus 5 which didn't have such problems.
PS: Android OS seems to use 600MB constantly, being the most resource hungry process.
I consider PixelROM a stock + extra features. Try SAOSP, SlimROM or Lineage OS. Custom kernel might help, too. The last solution is app LSpeed set to multitasking.
Edit: Almost forgot PureNexus ROM, try that, too.

Hey there!
I have a ZE551ML (2.3GHz/64GB/4GB). Like most of the Zenfone 2 users, I have had two major issues on this phone. The battery drainage and the RAM leakage, both caused by the dreaded Android OS.
Earlier we blamed it on the 5.0 Stock Lollipop firmware, hoping it will get fixed with Marshmallow. But now on the beta MM, I continue to have the same issues (I cleaned flashed).
But thanks to Marshmallow's new Memory manager, I saw that the kernel has taken up almost 1GB of the RAM. (For comparison, the OnePlus One MM drains around 200MB). And I'm sure, whatever causes this to happen is also the culprit behind the Android OS battery drainage.
Now maybe, we could blame it on the Intel CPU, since most apps are optimized for Snapdragon devices. But then, wouldn't it affect all the Zenfone 2s with Intel CPUs? Why is it that some have excellent kernel performance?
Since I'm not a developer, I couldn't dig more into the situation, but I hope some developer will see this and help us out. It's a wonderful phone except for the Kernel hogging up the battery and the RAM.
That's all folks!
I leave stock for CyanogenMod about 1 month (right before beta tester receive MM test) and I think kernel isn't a big problem. The problem is the UI. And it bloatware. I have to disable almost every bloatware (since I didn't root)
Android 5.0 itself having memory bug that using a lot of RAM for animation, turn off transition animation in developer setting to mitigate this problem, and it can be fix with an optimize. But I don't know why ASUS don't fix it.
And another RAM hogging is ZenUI Launcher. A lot of useless function that you don't really need, and it may use up to 300mb of RAM. And it may make kernel use more RAM. Try to use a different lightweight launcher for a while (1 day or maybe few day).
When you reboot your phone, ZenUI Launcher using 30-40mb of RAM, but the more you use, the more it hogging your RAM. You can really tell it by using for a while and after running some casual apps like Facebook or Messenger, ZenUI launcher will have to reload everything, and gaming, it usually have to reload the game when I have to listen/make a phone call or reply a message.
Sometimes you receive some warning/suggestion like: "Something leaked? Protect your privacy now!", and this is the most useless and tricky function when it suggest you to install CM Security or something Security which is actually quite useless and it may/will steal something from your phone.
I'm using CyanogenMod, and it kernel source provided by ASUS. And developers make it great. There are some bugs, but acceptable and usable. When I go to CM, I could play games and use Facebook or do something elsse at the same time which I couldn't do at stock.
ASUS could make their phone better, but no, they have to sell something, and it's the next generation. The Zenfone 3. They have to make people thinking: "My phone is slow, I have to buy a new one, and yeah, I like this ZenUI, and Zenfone 3 is here, price also pretty good, I will get that Zenfone 3".
I do not have a lot of experience loading custom roms. Is this pretty easy to do? Last time I tried this was with the original Motorola Droid (the one with slide out keyboard).
Does it make the Nexus 7 run much faster?
I have not been keeping track of the benefits of Android 7 vs older versions, are there compelling advantages to Nougat?
It seems like a good idea to try before upgrading to a new tablet. Lots of people seem to think upgrading the 2013 Nexus 7 to Nougat is better than getting a new Android tablet.
i think that, if you dont really use the nougat features, like double tap the recent key to switch to a recent app or split screen, youre better off with stock MM. I really like nougat but in order to make it work smoothly i have to install purenexus and elementalx kernel. Otherwise it would lag

I've been running LineageOS Nougat on my WiFi Nexus 7 for quite a while, and I really like it. I found it super easy to install, and really haven't had any issues. I'd say I'm intermediate in my Android knowledge, and this is the only device I've played around with custom ROM's on. Other than the OS itself, I haven't had to install any other addon or separate kernel, except I install SuperSU for root.
It is faster for me, almost certainly, and I know the battery life has been a lot better for me than MM. Some of the Nougat features are really cool - I like the finer-grain notification control especially, and the greater start-up control.
My experience, it was dead slow, had to wipe cache weekly to keep it running.

Interestingly enough, I find the same is true on my galaxy S7 edge since the Nougat update. A weekly cache clear to keep it from lagging. Makes me wonder if Nougat is actually a nugget.
Does LineageOS Nougat work with the LTE 4G version and is that the only reliable N version available for our device?
Id like to stick Android N on this thing, its such an awesome bit of kit and still serves me well, everything about it is still great for me.. Its still used daily, all throughout the day..
probably screen-on time. On 6.0.1 purenexus i had 6/7hours sot watching yt videos. On 7.1.2 purenexus i have close to 5 hours sot.
better off staying on mm with dirtyunicorn or PA
Hi, I installed RR two days ago and I would say I am where I expected, pretty fast with lots of customizations, but there is this strange yet important issue I have with RAM
It shows 1.5 GB of free ram when all apps are closed from recent, I used to see 2.2 GB of free ram on MIUI, and in the running services I am seeing almost 2 GB of RAM dedicated to system, 500 MB for apps and 1.5 GB free, is this normal?
Does LineageOS have the same thing?
And by the way this is my first ROM I installed on whyred, which Oreo ROM do you suggest for my next try?
Thanks in advance
That means nothing.
Android claims RAM for itself, but that doesnt mean its actively uses it. Its for granting RAM for whatever app needs it, and ofcourse for itself.
Basically you should not feel that in any ways, whats more it can be advantageous.

Ram part was already addressed by another user
so for oreo roms, you have few options:
Lineage OS is more stock style rom with less configurations compared to RR
Then you have AOSP Extended, AOSIP both have decent customizations almost on par with RR
Then you have Havoc which is also quite decent
I personally tried most 8.1 and depending on your needs you might feel more at home with some. I personally do not like Lineage OS because of the lack of some basic customizations in my opinion.

Thanks for the answer, So what do you use in your device right now?
I flashed Xiaomi.eu at the end, I felt it was the most stable
Hi,
I have a Nexus 5x and I know that is an old phone, but I want to still use it as my main phone. Lately I experienced very annoying lags and I'm tired wiping it every 3-4 months to make it smoother. I'm on stock 8.1. I think the main issue is that this phone has only 2gb of ram and it runs out quickly...
So my question is: is there some way to make it smoother? Installing custom rom (even older than 8.1) will help me? Or maybe stock but older than 8.1? Or some other tricks and tweaks?
I don't play games (only have one - forge of empires, it's very static game), I use Fb Messenger, what's app, Instagram, evie launcher, Spotify, twitter, Medium, chrome, bank app, YouTube, SwiftKey and some of Google apps. That's it, I'm not a heavy user. Oh and my phone had a bootloop that was fixed about 2 years ago.
Any recommendations?
Thank you in advance,
Simon.
@brylcio16, flash a slim custom-ROM: Lineage (Oreo), Groundzero or Cypher or AEX (Pie) +lowest GApps you need. 2MB RAM isn't so much, but enough for a slim layout.
You can try LineageOS 15.1 . I'm using this rom for almost 2 months and haven't face any lag in any single day. I am also a normal user just like you. This rom also provides weekly security updates and believe me, it's just buttery smooth. If you flash this rom, try to flash nano or pico gapps.
Custom ROM users, which ROM are you running?
I've noticed that there are a few ROMs that don't list their features and people are just supposed to know which ROM will suit them, unless they want to keep reinstalling new ones and testing them all out.
All (almost all?) of the ROMs are based on AOSP, so what sets them apart from one another? What makes a ROM worth choosing over the others, for you? What features do you like of your ROM? Let me know!
If you are using a ROM not listed, post below
Kinda hoping some folks comment on this in addition to taking the poll. I'm considering switching to a custom ROM, but there are so many and I don't know which ones would be a good fit for me.
I'm loving the Derpfest rom although Lineage is awesome as well both solid daily drivers for me

What's unique or different about them vs. stock? Any particular reasons you like either one?
I prefer the AOSP type roms both very snappy
Running crDroid, which is taking after the Pixel interface. Very stable, customizable, good battery management without throttling in games (at least for the ones I use). Definitely becoming my daily driver.
The only thing I'm missing is the original camera app from Oxygen OS/Color OS 12.
I recommend having MSM tool already set up and drivers installed before flashing custom Rom, although following the instructions, you shouldn't run into any issue. This will make it a lot easier in my opinion if something goes wrong.
I'm personally using Nameless at the moment, and is pretty nice. It's different then oxygen os 11, but pretty good. It has an ota update in settings like stock.
There are some really nice options at the moment, and am very thankful for the devs time for each one of these Roms.
Like previously mentioned, there is not a Oxygen camera port yet that I'm aware of with all the features like stock, but maybe soon. Wireless charging is slow, and a few minor bugs(like really minor). Overall very very nice. Thanks for reading, posting, and I hope this could be of some use. Thank you sincerely to all the incredible devs on the OnePlus 9 pro XDA forum.
crDroid too. I like it more than stock C44. The one and only ROM, which installation is flawless. Any other ROM is plagued with 'Cannot read' issue.
Now I run "Nameless"
For me is the BEST ROM out now for OP9 Pro ( I've tried all others ROM's to )
Most stable
I use Visible cellular service. The only A12 rom that has been compatible Visible is crDroid. I don't know what is done differently with it. I've tried them all and it's the only one that works for me.

Look for CAF telephony when choosing a rom for your phone. I used to have Verizon with the same issue. Derpfest might work for you too
Those that have chosen a ROM such as Nameless or crDroid, the reason often given is stability. Is this the main reason, or are there unique features for each ROM like there are between different phone manufacturers?

crDroid: You have some customisation features in a dedicated menu, the wireless charge is fully operational, battery optimization is great, everything has been working as intended so far. I feel at home using it.
I tried all of these ROMs but Derpfest and Paranoid are the only rom I didn't experience frequent stuttering. I prefer Derpfest because of its completeness and customizability.

NikGapps-ag12-arm64-12-20220314-signed for the Gapps package.
And I don't use the Google call screening, so I can't answer on that.
Spark os right now and cherish os before that.
Tried almost all of them, they're all a mess imo.
Nameless was the most stable and had all the basic needed features like choosing the display resolution, min/max Hz.
Stag reboots and gives crashdump too many times
Crdroid is extremely laggy, has a lot of features but lacks basic ones, huge battery drain
PE/Lineage too many stock apps freeze, stuttering, doesn't feel smooth
Derp was ok-ish
Nameless probably the best when writing this.

I checked on their official branches websites... They are not available for any phones of the OnePlus 9 series.
