Rear Glass - How easy to replace yourself? - LG G7 ThinQ Questions & Answers

So I need to replace the rear glass on my G7, it is not broken but is badly scratched (just me being a total idiot!)
I have ordered 2 replacement OEM backs which should arrive later this week but having watched the videos I am now wondering if it is good idea trying this myself? I am reasonably proficient but from googling it seems that getting the FPS to work may be as issue after?
Also the backs I ordered are OEM ones but it seems they do not come with any adhesive, I asked the seller and they said no adhesive is included, this does strike me as strange as I was expecting it to be pre-applied but I guess the seller knows better than I do! I can get some adhesive tape easily enough but then it gets fiddly with the risk I guess of messing up the water-proofing so I am now wondering is putting a skin on may be the lazier but easier option.
Anybody on here replaced the back themselves?

hi, i think that you have to lost the water protection with only normal tape or glue. I've found on internat "Rear Battery Door Cover Repair Tape ZVRT208" i think that is the tape that you need

Update, I did it ok and it was really easy actually. My only regret is a got some minor marks on the edge from the initial leavering so I'd advise anyone to just try and use something plastic rather than metal for that bit.
Not too bad though and overall it looks great now.

[Q] main camera lens covering

I assume the piece of glass exposed on the back of the phone is not the actual lens and i just a glass cover. Is it possible to replace this? And is there any good cover to protect it? I just noticed there's already several scratches on the glass. Was wondering if i could easily replace it and also if there was something i could do to protect in the future.
I'd prefer not getting a whole case if possible.
I believe it is a plastic cover, and I have seen replacment ones for sale on the internet, they are a plastic circle with a black ring printed on it.
I believe the price was somewhat high for what it is, like $15-20.
thanks, i think i found it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sprint-HTC-Evo-...665?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f62a96c1
Mines broke and it's glass not plastic. I think the replacements are plastic.
Sent while sitting on the toilet.
I read somewhere that you can go somewhere that processes camera film and get some used disposable cameras for free, and that the lenses from those will fit perfect on the evo. There was a wright up on it i think here at xda.

[Q] Anyone else broken the screen on their Defy?

A friend of mine dropped her Defy on to a stone floor from a few feet.
The screen broke with several cracks from the impact point. Strangely, the phone still works fine although it's a little uncomfortable swiping across the cracks!
I thought these phones used gorilla glass? Is that not the case?
Wasn't there a vid of a Defy being run over on Youtube?
Very disappointing and worrying seeing as I got my GF one for Christmas based on its ruggedness.
Regards,
Richard
PS It was a T-Mob UK version that broke if that makes any difference.
I've seen such a video which featured the Defy being run over and still working, although the screen was pretty smashed...
I've read a few reports elsewhere of screens breaking from relatively small drops. I guess they are ruggeder than most, but not all that...
Gorilla Glass isn't indestructible, just more resistant to it than regular glass. Even in this marketing video the screen was cracked (although still intact enough to resist the water attack afterwards)
You can probably get a replacement glass facing from Motorola. Well they must have quite a few spares around given the hubbub with the failed earpieces (that needs a full glass replacement)
So... any one got an idea as to how difficult it is to swap the glass?
R.
Personally I wouldn't try to change the glass myself due to the water tight seal.
Take it to your dealer and let them deal with it. Even if they charge you for the work it might be worth it not voiding the warranty.

Replace broken glass
Here is a video clip of me trying to replace a broken glass. The first part is only the disassemble. Check youtube for more.
Good effort!
It looks like getting the glass out of the front cover is quite hard. I was sure you were going to cut yourself...
Where did you source the replacement glass from? Did it come in a kit with the glue etc.?
R.
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not shatter proof, there is a massive difference.
Well it wasn't that hard. I found the replacement glass on ebay, search for defy digitizer. Unfortunately there was no adhesive included so the final result was not so very nice. The new glass got a bit dirty from the adhesive I used. Here you can se the final result and the assemble:
The OEM adhesive is available from globaldirectparts, however you have to buy 5pcs minimum. At $5, it's affordable, but not cheap considering it's only a really thin piece of sticky foam. On other forums, people have used silicone-based glue, still maintaining waterproofness.
Many Broken screens
I've broken my motorola defy screen a few times, and collected experiences on www.motoroladefy.eu
vids for how to fix and links to the parts I ordered that worked.
If you go for display with front cover, don't forget to move the earpiece!

Replacement For silver bezel

So I've barely had my first android phone for a week and its already slipped out of my hands and into hard concrete. The result is that I have some ugly dents on the silver ring that surrounds the phone. I have the marble white version, Any idea if I can find a replacement for it? Either I'm putting in the wrong search terms or I there are none available on the internet. I'm feeling really bad right about now
I have the same issue,, I hope someone help us :s
I cant help with the bezel but I can HIGH recommend you two buying a case since you have already dropped and dented the phone... Preferably a TPU one that will cover all edges.

pretty sure there aren't any until a Chinese knockoff reseller (cnn.cn or etc) makes one. even at that, you'd have to take apart the phone.

I bought a Case-Mate one,,

I found the bezel in ebay:

Not sure if I should get one
Hum, you do realize that's quite a bit of work to change that part, right ? (besides the fact that you void the warranty)
A guy made an almost complete video showing how to disassemble the device. I'm saying almost because at the end he explains the screen is heat sealed with the frame (the one you found on eBay) :
http://youtu.be/eo93EF7rVIw?t=9m27s (timing is included in the link)
You need to un-seal the two parts with heat.
So to resume, changing the bezel is as complex as changing the screen, or even more complex since you can buy screens already sealed with frames (but I suppose you don't want to pay 300$ just for bezel replacement ). Meaning this is surely the most complex piece replacement on the Galaxy S III ...

You mean the ones that dont cover the entire edges?
My point exactly. Thats why I recommend a TPU case.
Also the case will cover the dent and you dont have to worry about it anymore.
No point disassembling the entire phone and probably voiding your warranty for a dent.

Guys, Nonepse is right about how complex of a job changing the bezel (it's actually the phone's frame) is. The same guy did a video on how to take part the frame/bezel that the LCD is stuck on with adhesive. It is NOT a pretty sight.

There goes my dream of using the GS3 without a case and simply replacing the housing whenever I feel like it.
Try CNN.cn they usually have replacement parts

It is the frame, seems like alot of work, and practically impossible to swap out without replacing the screen since they are glued together . Just get a nice case, you won't see much of the damage. I got at least a nick here and there when i dropped my phone when i first got it. Now I got full case and front tempered glass screen protector that hides most if it (besides the little crack still visible, but it doesn't bother me). http://i50.tinypic.com/xpqa03.jpg
+1, a lot of effort/cost to fix it....Just put a bumper case on it at this point.

Got the same thing on my white Metro S3. Was looking into replacing the bezel/ frame until I saw that video. Just not worth it IMO.

Looks like a UAG case in white.
guys the truth is that its imposible to change only the bezel of the phone. why? because its imposible to remove the LCD withou braking it. the bezel is only $30 but if you brake the LCD (AMOLED) Screen its about $300 so just use a case.
when i bought my s3 it was black, and some of my friends drop it and the screen (gorilla cracked), i decided to buy the whole front part of the phone. i decided to change the color so now my S3 is Titanium 100%.

Dome glass epic fail.

Just sharing my epic fail trying to reinstall my dome glass because i spotted a small bubble form near the camera. I should have just lived with it. So embarrassing and shameful. Now i have to wait for a warranty replacement. I hope i don't scratch my naked glass while i wait.

Ah that sucks. This is the reason I'm going to buy a pack of Ringke Dual Easy Film. That way I can throw one of those on if I need to get a warranty replacement for my Whitestone Dome. $8 is cheap insurance against scratches.
I just installed my Whitestone Dome tonight. I think the only thing I did wrong was I missed some of the excess at the very top edge. I just noticed it after I did the final cure.
This was my first time installing a Whitestone Dome. So I didn't want to wipe it too aggressively after that initial 15 second cure.
So funny story...you know the guide that has the faint circle for a target? I thought my table was level. I tested it and made sure. Matter of fact, when I poured the LOCA on the screen it didn't move at all.
I lined up the guide, made sure it was set just perfect. Well, I was looking at the guide, making sure everything was lined up before I pressed down on the bottom to move the LOCA down. Well apparently I either pushed it down slightly with the guide, or the guide was JUST heavy enough to tip the tray. Because my LOCA was moving before I was ready.
Luckily I saw it just as it filled that target circle, so I quickly snatched the top tab out and dropped the glass down. I was so worried that I had ruined that glass, and like you have to wait on a warranty replacement. Luckily it worked out just perfect. I finally see why everyone races about these screen protectors.
I've done this on my Note 9 before..

That caught me out on my note 9 the glue starts moving way quicker than you think, I was obviously a lot more careful on the 10, but it's not something you know till you do it.

Yeah it was funny. I didn't even tip the bottom half of the tray. I guess the guide was just heavy enough to slightly tip it and move the LOCA.

That sucks. I still remember using the Dome glass when it was first released and they did not have the speaker cover. I got glue in the speaker and the sound was muffled. Lucky I had to do a phone replacement on this.
I usually order the Ringke protector for this reason as a backup. Amazon probably has the fastest delivery on these. Good luck and dont break or scratch your screen.
I've removed a cured protector intact and soaked it in a solution to soften the glue. Wiped it down and reapplied.
Yea it sucks. I already have a micro scratch that i can see off of the light reflecting on the glass. I've only had it in my pocket and on the charger. I just threw another protector on it until my replacement glass comes in. I hope the adhesive covers and fill in that micro scratch so i won't be able to see it. If not I'll have sprint replace the glass but then i don't want to mess up the water resistance. Decisions decisions.

If it's a micro scratch it should cover it just fine. It would have to be a really bad scratch to show through the LOCA and screen protector.
Those bozos sent me a repackaged dome. It was for an Apple screen protector in a Note 10+ box. Really?
Completely useless. They didn't even say sorry... to hell with them.
IQ Sheild works very well and unlike the fun dome it's fairly easy to install. Not glass but self healing and lasts at least 3 months if properly applied.
It's a wet apply (you got wiggle room to get it centered) and getting on right isn't very hard unlike many others.
2 to a box, only needed one; perfect day.
Mine is 3 months old and still looks great. No bubbles or raised corners even with the tight fitting Bolt case.

Samsung G20 S is an amazing phone and more delicate than eggs

I decided to switch carriers and try a new smart phone and went with Tmobile and a Galaxy 20S. I was surprised on how slim and light the phone is upon picking it up. The retail store did not have any cases I liked so I ordered a case off Amazon and decided to not take my phone out of the house until I had a case for it. Well......
I had my phone for about 4 days using it in the house. My phone was sitting on the arm rest of my couch and slid off , dropped and landed on the laminate floor. A fall of less than 20". The rear glass cover is cracked on opposite corner edges.
My phone and camera work fine but I am simply amazed at how fragile the 20S is or maybe its just my 20S. I have no idea if its a factory defect and I have never seen anything like it. Its really more fragile than an egg. If the phone is this delicate it should come WITH some type of case or more durable gorilla glass. I am 57 years old and owned several brands of smart phones ( coming from an LG V30) and I have never dropped or broken a phone before in my life. Be aware my cracked 20S could be a fluke or a sign of a bigger issue. Now I need to find a place to replace mt rear cover.
The Galaxy 20 S needs a GOOD case so be advised if you have one be darn careful with it. The quality of the phone ( use) is excellent , its the durability issue that makes me concerned. If a laminate floor cracked the rear glass a drop on concrete will likely kill the phone. Pretty sad for a device that costs a grand or more.
Depends on which angle your phone falls, it is just glass. Gorilla glass is anti scratch but not anti crack.
Also the phone comes with a case, it's in the box and I will recommend you use it while waiting for the better one you ordered on Amazon to arrive.
Glass is glass and glass will break.

Just got to be careful of where you put and how you handle it.
I haven't dropped or broken a phone or misplaced one in 12 years.
Mainly because i see the item as $$$ and to get $$$ took me months of hard work.
It's WAY more break prone than other phones.
Watch and wait . Great phone for function and features, build durability is iffy at best,IMHO.
If you spend over a thousand dollars for a phone in this day and age a good case is mandatory. Otherwise you are just playing Russian Roulette and sooner or later it's gonna fall on the floor. I love the OtterBox cases. I had the commuter for many years for the S7 edge and Note 8. When I got the Ultra 512 gb I want with the Defender Pro and glad I did. First day I got the phone it was knocked off the kitchen table at work and landed on a concrete floor. Not even a scratch. So you can either wait for your beautiful caseless phone to shatter when you have an oooops moment or you can invest in a top quality case.
Everyone, well most of us, have heard the expression you cannot have your cake and eat it too!
This applies well to our beloved smart phones.
You can have something durable in its creaky, plasticky, feels like a piece of s4!+ design and all (Blackberry anyone?) that can be kicked, tossed, dropped, etc. Doesn't need a case at all.
Or the latest designs that are thin, glass on front and back with metal trim that feel like quality in hand with no squeaks or twists when handled. But if you drop them without a case you will regret it! Even if the glass doesn't chip or break there will be nicks/scratches in the bezel/frame that gets the best of the OCD types.
So now we have cases that are essentially mandatory to everyone that has to carry their devices around. The best cases combine looks/feel while offering adequate protection and then some are purely based on protective qualities alone that make our phones feel like bricks!
I do like thin cases like Pitaka but also will use something with a bit more protection if I'm running around outdoors or up in the air (tower/ladder/tree) etc. I used to use a rigid holster that would fit a specific case but gave up on those due to having to buy so many. And they didn't actually protect the screen as well as you'd think. I use a pouch now with a clip for belt and has a loop that my Grip6 belt can pass through making it utterly impossible to lose the pouch with phone safely inside.
The only thing I haven't figured out is how to make a case puppy teeth proof!
Irony :
Designing something for great looks and feel.
Has to be put in a case that wipes out the looks and feel.
Don't get me wrong, I do love the phone but it really is delicate. Sometimes adding thicker glass or raised impact frame is better for function and longevity.
This is the 1st smart phone I have damaged from a very minimal drop. The plus version I think has a raised camera module that takes a beating from setting it down on a flat surface. I almost selected that one for the bigger battery and glad I got the S20. The S20 will be a money maker for repair shops.

The Ultra has a raised camera lens too, but the silcone case im using is just right enough to make it flush so theres no problem with putting it down for me.
Damage the front glass, display or camera module and a $109 rear cover will be a bargain.

If it's flush, it would still come into contact with any surface you placed it on. I'm having a hell of a time finding a case that maintains a thin profile but has raised edges along the camera so that it can be recessed. In the meantime I use a little tempered glass protector back there. But it sucks cause it smudges easily and isn't as easy to clean. The search continues.
