Working REAL(!) 3g / 4g USB Modem-Sticks on PX5/PX3 Units - MTCD Android Head Units General

UPDATE 17th sep 2019: PROJECT CLOSED, see post #147 .
Okay,
we´ve got many threads about "3g/4g" USB-sticks für Car Androids powerd by PX3/PX5.
BUT: most posts describe WiFi-Sticks and Sticks recognized as ethernet connection or ´WiFi-Hotspot Crap´ devices.....
i think we need a thread for WORKING REAL MODEMS (detected as mobil-connection) on this devices.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so! here the first modem i found that 100% worked as a MODEM:
as 3G:
Huawei E173u-1 (fully working w/o loosing connection, be sure to run Firmware 11.126.85.00.209; up- or downgrade!!!)
Huawei E173u-2 (fully working w/o loosing connection, be sure to run Firmware 11.126.85.00.209; up- or downgrade!!!)
(Huawei E173S-1 WILL NOT WORKING!)
tested on PX5 with Malaysk 3.2 (oreo)
Firmware 11.126.85.00.209 for E173:

today (14th March 19) i can confirm:
also working with 3g:
HUAWEI K3772 - HSPA USB Stick
note:
- working with ALL PX5 Android Systems (Stock Marshmallow, Malaysk Marshmallow, Stock Oreo, Malaysk Oreo, hal9k Oreo)
- no problems with handover or switching between 3g/2g
- perfect working surf-stick

today (15th March 19) i can confirm:
also working with 3g:
HUAWEI E3131s-1 3G Surfstick in ´Modem-Mode´ <recommended Device for ´Oreo´
note:
- working with ALL PX5 Oreo Android Systems (Stock Oreo, Malaysk Oreo, hal9k Oreo) > NOT working on any Marshmallow (only signal strength shown, no 3G connection)
- no problems with handover or switching between 3g/2g
- perfect working surf-stick
- has the BEST RADIO LINK with PERFECT SPEED-RATE of all tested devices (til today; 15th March ´19)
- has connection for an external antenna (CRC-9 jack) > great

do they configure the APN automatically?
do you see mobile data settings in android settings by default or only after connecting the USB LTE stick?
does it power up when unit turns on?
how long till connection is established after boot?
i'm also looking for a working LTE stick for a Xtrons PX5 octacore 4/32GB with 8.0....even their own Xtrons accesory is used as hotspot, not mobile data mode.

hi,
unfortunately NO LTE stick is working native at this moment. only 3g/2g sticks are working. the best working device is the Huawei E173u-1 and E173u-2 AS NATIVE MOBILE CONNECTION (be sure you run Firmware 11.126.85.00.209 on E173; link in post 1). the connection established after ´wake up´ in 20 sec and shown in the status bar. pls. do not use usb extention-cables to connect the stick. the surfstick use up to 300mA und will crash when the USB cable is over 1m.
at this moment (mar2019) i´m working on a custom firmware for Huawei E398 LTE stick for native working on PX5 devices based on malaysk rom oreo. Hal9k ROM Oreo and mobile connection is NOT WORKING STABLE.

i spent 2 hours with a guy selling USB modems and we tested over 30 models
i am running dec '18 official FW on an Xtrons PB88UNVP and i can confirm also no LTE stick working.
Couple of 3G/H+ sticks working perfectly: Huawei E173, E1750, E3131, K3770, K3772 and ZTE MF190
No other ZTE modems worked.
The Xtrons is totally missing mobile data connection settings in the network menu, don't know about other boxes.
Some sticks do get signal icon but no negotiated 3G network (guess due to auto APN missing), others appear as ethernet-over-usb i think, there's an icon like <...> appearing (instead of signal strength & 3G), but no working internet connection.
I am using a E3131 (21.6mbps) stick now, works just fine, it's a visible improvement over "older" E173 sticks with 7.2mbps rates.

i also tested many of the models you tested... many of them are functionality...BUT: when driving, the handover will NOT WORK with the most surftsicks.... it´s not a problem of the host (android headunit), it´s a problem of the sticks: they don´t support roaming/handover..... you can see this by driving around in your car; the 3G symbol is lost, but the carrier of the mobil-signal is good. after reconnecting the surfstick you get a 3G sginal again> that´s bull**** :crying:
only the (good old) E173 will do the handover/roaming perfectly. i think it it does not matter a high transfer rate in a car android system. you do not use youtube, etc.... you need the mobil connecting for ex.: navigating, ´blitzer.de´, traffic announcement. but in germany we will lost die 3G/2G support in 2 years. SO we have to find an LTE solution... and i´m working on it.....
/chris
edit: you have to install ´malaysk ROM´ on your headunit. the stock rom is crap... so many missing functions (like mobile support, vpn, ROOT(!!!) ) i can confirm, the custom rom works 100% stable (version 3.2 from malaysk). also you have so many extra features: a PERFECT sleep mode after ACC off with full control of the sleep-mode (an extra menu for stop and restart apps on wakeup; like an ´autostart´), and,and,and....

hmm, i just realized that if you use the Agama launcher, you can set it to show the mobile connection icon (top left).
Then if you click on it, you access the mobile data connection settings of Android...LOL?! You can see/configure the link speed, APN details, etc....
That's not accessible from the default launcher or normal android settings (on the official 8.0 FW)
Can anyone test this?
And what do you mean by handover? Between carriers? Networks speeds? Cell towers?

this is not a "problem" of the launcher... the mobil-settings only shown, when a mobile-device is connected....
the setting are in the regular "connections-menu".....

no, they're not in the regular connections menu, either with or without a mobile device connected, at least not on my unit. I only have Wifi/VPN/etc....nothing on mobile connection. Furthermore, the whole system menu theme is black with white text, but accessing the mobile settings via Agama as you can see is black text on white background. So i think on the official ROM the settings are not "call-able" from default menu, they're hidden and somehow Agama opens them.
and so far, the E3131 works perfectly, starts in 10-15 sec after ignition, the box gets connected automatically to 3G, works nice. No 3G icon dropouts or connection interruptions.

so, can anyone with a PB88UNVP box (or any xtrons android 8/8.1) confirm this behavior?
this could open possibilities of other modem sticks (i had a few with this behavior) that were recognized by the unit (signal strength bar appears) but no auto-APN settings created (no 3G/LTE icon besides the signal bar, therefore no active connection)...

today confirm: HUAWEI K3772 - HSPA USB Stick...

i solved this problem otherwise.
i bought a mifi, like https://www.mifi-hotspot.nl/huawei-e5785Lh-22c-lte-advanced-mifi-router-300-mbps-var
i put a simcard in this and made a always power on connection to it, so its always recharging.
then i just use wifi to connect
i have 4g everywhere now.

i confirmed already in post #8 a whole list of modems that are working.
did you check if the factory 8.0 ROM on the PX5 shows the mobile data network settings?

Have you tried to enable Voice on 3131?
I use extended dashboard from http://huawei.mobzon.ru/ and also being able to disable dashboard showing (eg. CD Rom Driver disable which speed up connection time on HU) things I tested is that can easily receive/send SMS any have full access to phonebook.
Too keep on topic. You can easily access Modem menu by entering "4G" in search help and it will be started if Modem is detected as available.

Data connection keeps dropping

I'm running my Captivate glide on Orange network (device is unlocked).
I rooted it following all the steps shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082 (BTW, works great thanks).
I kept AT&T rom, but issue happens also with Rogers rom.
This happens only on 3G/3G+ connections.
WiFi works great.
The issue looks quite simple: data connection drops (very) often.
No more email push notifications, ...
Have to go to Settings > Network > Airplane mode : switch it on and then witch it off to get data connection back.
It is not an operator issue. My other phone(s) are using the same and data connection works.
Is this a radio rom issue ? Is there a fix ? (didn't find a thing related to that issue).
Anyone having this issue ?
Depends on how strong your network is, I have experienced this a few times.
I keep getting this now that I have had more experience with it, anyone else experiencing random sharp drops in data speed/connection?

Well, I have 4 out of 5 bars... Signal looks strong enough to me.
If I use the same SIM card in a HTC MyTouch 4G slide => Works great, no data connection drops at all !
Looks like it depends on what programs are running and using the data connection:
- email push - connection last long enough.
- when I'm running Bejive (IM) - connection last a bit less (before the 1st drop).
- when I add Skype & LoudTalks : almost every 5 minutes connection drops.
I also noticed that after a voice phone call, sometimes data connection doesn't (cannot) restart by itself ...
Here is an idea :
Is there a way to tweak Operator connection like it can be done with HTC phones : GSM + CDMA, CDMA Only ?
Because when you switch the phone to CDMA only, it uses different frequencies and allow to keep data connections while talking on the phone.
Didn't find that option in Captivate Glide settings ...

I just checked ... I don't have the "Network Mode" option in "Mobile Networks" section.
I have Roaming, allow data connection, APN, ... but not Network mode.
Weird...
I checked the operator info. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
I'm stuck ...and it keeps happening. No solution for now.

Already did that, but that was a few days ago when looking for the WiFi tethering feature ...
I'll flash it back to Rogers kernel & ROM and test.
Update: Flashed Rogers rom.
Good news is I now have the Network settings back. (AT&T rom is not the right one, for sure !)
Data connection last longer. But the issue is still here.
Still investigating...
Anyone else having this issue ?
the day before yesterday, I went to the copier room in my school and stayed for about 2 hours (too many copying). before i get out, i have no signal (mobile network not available). I need to go out to have signal back or reboot.
It happened again yesterday on the exact same location, I'm going to be there again now.
I believe it might be location wise....in my case at least.

I checked, looks like it is not linked to a specific location. I've been travelling and issue kept occuring.
Once data connection is ok, it usually stays up for 2 to 5 minutes, then drops.
"4G" symbol is still displayed - but no more data connection. Web pages not available in browser, no email sync, no more IM, ...
While data connection is down, Cellphone still works, WiFi as well.
It may be linked to an APN issue ... Or definitely a Radio ROM issue.
I'm running Baseband I927RUXKJ5.
Anyone else having this issue ?
When I got the phone the AT&T rep told me there was a known issue with the phone dropping down to lower data speed. He told me if I experienced it to get a new SIM card. Doesn't sound exactly the same but maybe try that?

N Preview 5 - wifi issues

Got the OTA, broke my wifi, grrr.
Basically for some reason with MM I can't get 5Ghz wifi, so I went down the N Preview route, and seemed to fix the wifi issues. Now with Preview 5, I've lost 5Ghz wifi again. Anyone else had this problem?
No problems here, running DP5 with followmsi kernal.
Are you sure its a problem with android and not an app?
Try reflashing system, boot, vendor and bootloader to ensure they are all on the latest version. If that doesnt work try a clean flash.
Hi, not aware of any app. When I had a clean install of MM, no 5Ghz in the first place. Will try a clean N Preview install and see what happens.
I just installed latest N and 5ghz is working fine for me too. This is my first N install and it all appears to be working perfectly (on the stuff I use anyway). Think it's a keeper
Grr, that is frustrating, don't know why its my tablet. I've also done a full manual install, but still the same problem with the wifi.
I've just downloaded Wifi analyser and no 5ghz bands are showing (including my one, to which all my other devices are connected to).
I had the same problem.
It seems that de N-Previews only discovers a few 5 GHz channels.
Here in EU: 36,40,44 and 48.
Can you change the channel on the router/access point and retry?
Thank you! That solved the issue. My router sets the channel automatically and it was set at something like 136. Changed the settings to 48 and boom, it worked. Thanks again.
After upgrading I found that the bluetooth keyboard doesn't work. It pairs (detects the keystrokes) but after that it brings up the on-screen keyboard and doesn't detect the hard keyboard
My router is broadcasting 5G on channel 157 and my Pixel C connects perfectly. WiFi Analyzer shows a large number 5G channels. This on the latest (07/05) 6.0.1 stock / not rooted.
Where are you from? I googled PDX and it's USA. Correct?
In EU only the lower channels work.
Yes, U.S. My Pixel C also sees 5G channels 36, 40, 44 and 48 (in addition to 149, 153, 157, and 161).
Yesterday installed Nougat final.
The higher channels work again!!! (EU version)

Wifi, BT and poor coverage drain my battery

Hi, I have the nexus 5x since Oct 2016.
With wifi, BT or poor coverage, y consumption is high. Minimum of 1,5%/hour. With mobile data 0,2%/hour. Perhaps with poor coverage is normal, but I don't understand why it happens with Wifi (At home (2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz) and at work (5Ghz)). I have tested multiples cases.
I have had 7.0 (stock), 7.1(stock), 7.1.2 (Dev), without root and with root + (Franco kernel or ElementalX kernel) + naptime. I have desactivate Wifi scaning on location. I never see the flat line in battery graph with Wifi.
I use the app "gsam battery" to see the battery graph. The kernel and Android system are the first app suckers, I think it's normal. I don't see anthing unusual in battery graph. The mobile go to sleep mode correctly.
What would be the problem? What new tests I can do?
Thanks
Question: Are you using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling/texting?
To clarify: I don't think Project Fi is the culprit, but I may have a solution that I've been testing.
A common complaint that goes back to my N5 running Kit Kat. The fix was to force the device to only use 2.4Ghz Wifi, however since 7.0 Google has removed that option.
Changing router's or updating the router firmware has helped some in the past but not for me.
Does your device Doze properly on a mobile data connection also? And does wifi occasionally idle properly, say when switching back and forth between wifi and cell data? That's the case for me currently, and you know something's wrong when a 3G connection idles better than Wifi.
I'm not using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling. My carrier is vodafone, a normal carrier.
I have tested a router with 2.4Ghz only, but the problem persists.
Doze works correctly with mobile data connection and Wifi. I can see the mobile go to sleep mode correctly in both cases.
But in idle mode, wifi use a 1.5%/hour and mobile data 0.2%/hour, but I don't see nothings strange in the graphs or stadistics.
What I can I try?

Ya sounds exactly like the issue I was describing. The fix used to be to force the device to only pick up 2.4Ghz connections but Google took the option away ever since 7.0. Being on a network they only transmits 2.4Ghz doesn't help as the device is still listening to and picking up 5Ghz signals.
There is no known fix that I'm aware of. I don't think Google considers it their problem, they would likely say it's a router compatibility issue and tell us to upgrade our router firmware.

Nexus 5X randomly lose connectivity

Hello there,
I am encountering a problem with my beloved N5X...
Since a few weeks it randomly loses connectivity (both cellular and Wi-Fi)
And after a few seconds (sometimes minutes) it catches the network back.
For example:
I wake up the phone for checking messages, and i see WhatsApp saying "searching for messages", no warning icons for network.
Then i try to load a Chrome page, it does not load..
After a few seconds all is getting back to normal and everything loads. (the web page, new messages notifications comes on, etc)
I tried so far:
- Reboot (after a reboot it works normally for a few hours, then problem begins again)
- Resetting network parameters (does nothing)
- Complete factory reset (had 2 weeks problem free then the problem begins again)
- Flashing custom ROM (from Google factory to last Lineage OS 15.1)
For informations:
- No VPN
- No gaming, the phone never heats up
- Good network coverage (both cellular and Wi-Fi)
- No network related apps
- The phone is 3 years old, never felt on the ground
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot for reply, and have a nice day!
I'm having a similar problem since Oreo update, but only on WiFi. On 4G network is working flawlessly but I think is due to carrier network settings on cellular towers.
Every search I made on the web to address the issue finished with a lot of posts read but no decent solution whatsoever, but the other day a reply on reddit made me think and I found a setting on my router WiFi AP section called "Unscheduled APSD (Automatic Power Save Delivery)" and since I disabled it my phone seems working better. I don't know if it's just random luck or it was really the cause of the issue but you can try.
Hope it helps.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
I searched everything on the phone that could be wrong and i also ended up that router might be the cause.
I did not found the setting you mention (i'm on Synology router) but i tried to disable the 5 GHz frequency band and use only the 2.4 GHz one.
Since then the phone works perfectly! Although the Wi-Fi speed is a bit slower..
I hope this can help you too!

I was on 2.4Ghz only since a few months but had the issue anyway before disabling uAPSD.
If your bandwidth is reduced is probably because your network is on a "busy" channel, try scanning all the wireless networks around your home (i use wifi analyzer on my phone) and see which are the "busy" channels and set yours on a free one. Bandwidth on 2.4 and 5 ghz should be the same, the pro of the first is a better (wider) coverage of the signal, mostly through walls and the pro of the second is less interference with other wireless technologies and environment at expenses of the coverage.

Well, after a few days i noticed the problem still persist even on 2.4GHz, but less than before..
Unfortunately Synology router does not have APSD option in the Wi-Fi settings.
I tried to put Protected Management Frames (PMF) on "enable - optional", that setting was disabled before.
Wait and see.
Thanks again!

Android 10 : No more 5Ghz WiFi hotspot ???

Hi everyone
Did anyone notice that since Android 10, tethering a 5Ghz hotspot is no longer available ?
On my phone the option to change from 2,4Ghz is greyed out in hotspot settings !
And also it seems to me that we could manualy set WiFi chanel before... No ?
Works fine here.
Ok, I found this :
https://piunikaweb.com/xiaomi-devices-wont-support-5ghz-wi-fi-hotspots-band-1-in-many-regions
According to this, it shouldn't work in Portugal, but it dates from december 2018, and laws may have changed.
But here in Guadeloupe (France) I know it still worked at the beginning of this year (on Android 9)
Never noticed not working...
Well, I investigated a little :
When I restart the phone and go straight to hotspot settings (without activating it) the 5Ghz option is then available and I can select it.
But then when I activate 5Ghz hotspot it deactivates itself after about 2 seconds.
