Is my Nexus 7 bricked? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi flo tablet with LineageOS installed.
I’ve not used it in over 12 months but today I was using it.... it turned off, loaded up the Google screen with a locked padlock and won’t go further.
In recovery mode it has TWRP, but the screen and volume buttons are unresponsive, the power button works but I can’t swipe to unlock or click anything.
I’ve plugged it into my MacBook and it’s not detected, I plugged it into a windows laptop and it says the device is unrecognised or malfunctioned.
I installed the android SDK on both and the USB driver on the windows machine.
Also changed between 5 different cables and different ports.
I can’t reflash and I can’t touch the recovery.
What can I do?
Thanks

All these problems, including no USB, are caused by poor connection between the PCBs.
Try this simple trick https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66952073&postcount=3
If it does not help, you'll have to re-seat the wide, silver cable on both ends. Disconnect the battery first of course and watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9PwK9eGrCY

My GN 2 nearly totalled my desktop! WTF?

So I installed the latest Samsung drivers on my Win 7 desktop with the intention of using mskippen's Note 2 toolkit to do a nandroid backup of my phone. After rebooting the behemoth I plugged in a USB cable into an open port and then plugged in my phone. The screen of the Windows machine went black and the cooling fan kicked into high gear! I couldn't even do a three finger salute (ctrl-alt -del) to get to the boot menu. I had to YANK the power cable!! I rebooted and tried again, same result. WTF!
Has anyone ever seen this happen before?
Before you suggest reinstalling the drivers - I rebooted the desktop one more time and plugged the phone in even before the computer had a chance to initialize the USB controllers (I.e, during POST) and the exact same thing happened. Seems my phone is out to literally assassinate my desktop. But here's the kicker - I've successfully plugged this phone into the computer before. So what is going on?
Anyone?

Sounds like a short circuit, try a different cable, try a different USB port (preferably one on the back of the computer).
FYI, USB ports are hot during POST (otherwise your keyboard would never allow you to get into the BIOS).

I swear I've used that same cable before to plug the phone (successfully) into the desktop, but you may be right. I'll try a different cable. Scared the s**t out of me, let me tell you.

Nexus 7 not recognized by PC?

Hi all, I've been lurking the forums since bout September of 2012. I haven't really been posting here, mainly just gathering ROMs, kernels, help etc.
Anyways, my Nexus 7 isn't being recognized by Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or even Ubuntu. this leads me to belive this is caused from the tablet. I have installed numerous drivers, but with no luck. Recently, I noticed when I boot into recovery, and the tavlet uis on the Google screen, my computer recognizes it as, "Unknown Device." Soon after it passes the Google screen and boots into TWRP Windows can't detect it anymore. My tablet says it's connected via AC, not USB - which is probably why I can't transfer files. I have MTP checked, and I tried PTP too. I've tried enabling and disabling debugging with no luck still. I'm using the OEM charger for the device, and I have tried using multiple cable with no dice.
"So a new possible way of fixing this after having contacted Asus support. They had me turn of my Nexus 7 and then hold the Volume Up + Power button for 30 seconds and then hold only the power button for 60 seconds. I was told this is to remove static from the mother board. USB Charging, USB Transfer, and Wireless Charging (which is what made me notice the issue) now work. The only problem I have now is that the cord that came with the tablet seems to be a bit loose and will cause it to stop charging when I don't just let it sit on a table."
That was suggested on a different forum, but that didn't work for me neither.
ADB nor fastboot cannot see my device as well.
Any help?
have you tried plugging the cable in to a different usb port?
What drivers are you using? Try the generic USB ones here, which I use with no problem at all: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
For best results, go to Device Manager first, set it to show all hidden devices, then delete (not just disable) any previous drivers you may have installed.
"They had me turn of my Nexus 7 and then hold the Volume Up + Power button for 30 seconds and then hold only the power button for 60 seconds. I was told this is to remove static from the mother board."
I feel like hitting my head against a brick wall when hearing such advice.

Yes, I've tried USB 3 ports, and USB 2 ports with no success.

Gotta love Asus' tech support.
Try Nexus Root Toolkit, it has a nice walkthrough that shos you how to first uninstall any existing non-working usb drivers. Then just try its options one by one and you'll have working drivers in minutes.
I gave up even trying to get my original N7 and my N7 (2013) to be recognized by any PC. What I do instead is use a free app of the day I got from Amazon a while back called Wifi File Explorer. Run the app and you can access the file system from your PC. Upload, move, copy and create folders.
It's worked for me for a while now. I'm sure there are other free apps that will do the same.

Have you also tried usb ports on the back of the PC? Those are directly on the motherboard, whereas usb ports on the front of a PC are almost always via a usb hub connected to the MB. I know of instances where this makes a substantial difference (device being recongnized or not). You might try it (if you haven't already).
Edit : also try disabling AV software and possibly firewall. But admitedly I have personally never had any issues regarding device not recognized due to this.
This was my solution.

Dead Nexus 7 2013

Hi All,
I've been looking into the forum and came across couple of issue with 'dead' nexus 7 but none of them applies for mine. I was browsing the device, when suddenly it flashed and powered down. Now the table wont charge (there is no battery logo) and even the table wont powering on. I tried both with power and usb charging (for long hours).
The device is recognized by adb drivers (as unauthorized) hence could not do any modifications and not recognized at all by fastboot. I was wondering if someone had similar issue in the past with nexus 7 2013 (2nd gen) or similar android tablets/handsets.
I appreciate any help!
Thanks

How is it recognized in ADB or fastboot without powering on? My understanding is that the tab would not turn on if the battery is dead since it doesn't use the current supplied through USB directly. It could be something as simple as that; or the battery connector came off as it is rare one would go out abruptly like that.

It is recognized in ADB as an unauthorized and every command is type the response is "error: device unauthorized ...." Is there a way to Enable USB debugging from command line (windows/linux)? There are no blinking leds, and cannot boot it up into recovery mode.

I understand your saying "it won't power on" to mean nothing happens when you try to turn it on- as in it's totally dead. In that state, PC won't even see anything, let alone recognize an ADB device. You might want to backtrack a bit and tell what you did, what happened, and what you're trying to accomplish now, and maybe someone can help.
Does it turn on at all, and if it does, how far would it get?

Thank you for your reply.
After troubleshooting I noticed that its not dead since i am able to see the devices under adb devices. I also noticed that the device isnt dead because it rang when I clicked locate my device from my google account.
I think its the display which is faulty. I will buy an HDMI cable for the nexus 2013 device and connect it to hd tv to mirror the display.
Thanks

touch screen is non-responsive and computer does not recognize device

The touchscreen on my 2013N7 fizzled out earlier. Responsiveness has been on and off for the day - for a few hours it would improve after I press on a certain spot on the back of the device, but after that it has gone entirely. I've rebooted several times and there is no response.
I'm trying to use android control (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395) to just access it and get my data off of it, but when I plug it into a PC, the PC doesn't recognize that there is a device plugged in at all, even though it'll still charge the N7. It's completely missing from the device management list; adb shell can't find devices plugged in. I've looked around for possible fixes, but all of the ones mentioned require being able to access the tablet.
I'm at a bit of a loss here - is there a way to get the N7 to show up on the device list, or an alternate way to pull data off of it?

The spot corresponds to the plug (att) and now it is time to unlock, reseat the cable and relock it as all of the problems relate to poor contact of the cable.
Same issue here,I am inserting a usb otg and connecting mouse there and then rebooting. This is really a bad issue

Fastboot won't connect to Nexus 7

I have an issue very similar to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/nexus-7-2013-qa/unable-to-nexus-7-fastboot-mode-t3966600
I got mine for parts on ebay with "power issue." It had low battery and it charged up fine overnight, but when it boots up to either system or recovery it just stays on the Google logo.
It boots into Fastboot fine, but it will not connect to my computer. Computer has the lastest Manjaro linux with android-tools and connects to my Xiaomi Mix 2S fine, but neither "fastboot devices" or "lsusb" will show anything about the nexus, in USB 2 or 3 ports.
I opened it and reseated the silver cable between the boards, and also tried several different micro-usb cables, no dice. The port and circuit boards look completely fine. The screw seals show that it has been taken apart before.
I was not able to boot it to enable usb debugging, does fastboot need that?
Update: I did actually get it to boot, when I opened it I unplugged the battery and held the power button for a while to drain all the power. Fastboot still does not work, but I was able to factory reset it and install the last two updates. Curiously, I cannot connect to it with USB, maybe the data lanes are dead? And then after using it a half hour, it froze and I had to hold the power button to turn it off, and now its back stuck at the google logo.

Measure the data lanes:

and
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80218074&postcount=6
It's a different USB issue but the measurements must be the same.
