Verizon WiFi calling busted in Android Pie? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I recently updated my Verizon Galaxy S9 to the Android Pie release. I had previously been using WiFi calling on my home network, but once I updated to the Pie release it no longer works. In fact, despite lots of interaction with Verizon support, I have been unable to even access the settings to enable WiFi calling. They simply are not there. Are others seeing this? Does WiFi calling work with Android Pie on Verizon?
Thanks,
Craig

I am wondering the same thing. After updating to Pie last night, my S9+ no longer has the WiFI calling feature.
Wi-Fi calling would help out big time since our cell tower strength is very low at my house. I hope this isn't Verizon's way of them forcing people to purchase their mobile extenders.

The Verizon support rep certainly seemed to believe it should have been there. To the point that she declared my phone has a manufacturing defect and shipped out a "new" one. I guess I will see if that one behaves any differently. Like you, I'm on the edge of the coverage and WIFI calling has been helpful for battery life.

Craig - I think I have some good news! To enable WiFi calling, go to your Phone app, then click on the menu on the top right hand corner and choose Settings. "Wi-Fi Calling" is shown on this screen.

Well, how 'bout that. Too bad that the VZW representative didn't know that! It would have saved a bunch of time.

except it doesnt turn on for me on my note 9 it just trys and says unable to at this time . The only way I can get mine on is to turn on airplane mode then turn on wifi , then try to call someone and turn on wifi from there. But after I take it out of Airplane mode I have to do it all over. Spent 1 hour on the phone with Verizon . I own my Construction Company and this is the only phone I have for work . On top of that we are in a dead zone in the middle of Denver Colorado where my Home/Office is. 1k POS phone is only good for a paper weight . I have to call with my google home. This is miserable. Yes, I factory reset and trouble shot for more hours than I can spare.

I know this is the S9 forum. But I just got the update on my Note 8 and my work S8. Both of them are having the same issue. There's a notification about Wi-Fi calling Saying to tap here to confirm or update Emergency Location Information. I tap that it Says loading this may take a few moments, then says it's unable to enable Wi-Fi calling. I go through the phone App and settings and try to enable it there and get the same results. Before PIE i had this enabled already on both phones too.

Saw the same issue on a T-Mobile forum. No resolution there either. https://support.t-mobile.com/thread/149929

I updated to pie on my Verizon note 8 yesterday, ever since I've had the same problem as twiggle ^
I can't get rid of the notification to update emergency location information and I can't turn on wifi calling. Same message as him.

Same in Note 8. Prior update fixed it when prior update broke it.
The only non-extreme way to remove notification is to force stop the system app... after every reboot.
Waiting for a VZW hotfix. Like I did for 6 months prior.

Same thing happened to me after the Pie update. Clearing data and cache allowed me to turn it on with my s8+. When I try to update emergency address, that still fails though.

Incoming callson WiFi calling goes straight to Voicemail

I love the phone and having the hardest time resisting turning the phone back in. I'm on my 2nd S3 and my third Sim card. Everything appears to be going well but I noticed that when my phone is in WiFi calling mode, incoming calls go straight to voice mail. I don't get an alert or anything. If they leave a voicemail, I get that. I searched other phones that have had this issue not just the S3. I am running stock OS but I am rooted.
Can anyone else verify that there incoming calls are working on Wifi Calling ? Any ideas on what I could try ? outgoing calls work fine.
EDIT: Sometimes calls go through, sometimes it doesn't. When it does go through, I can't swipe the green button to answer. It goes through the swipe motion but nothing happens. When I am off of WiFi calling, I can receive calls correctly and I can properly swipe to answer them

Ah-ha, you just solved a mystery for me! I like to have my phone automatically connect to any wifi in my usual hangouts to save data. I kept wondering why I was missing calls without hearing my ringtone. I have a theory on what is happening. Back on my old Vibrant, wifi-calling could not work on slower networks. I could get it to initialize but never could it actually make a call. I noticed this when up in the mountains at a lodge that had very slow internet. Maybe it's the same issue? Hopefully others will chime in.
Not sure if this a slow network issue or and ICS issue. My S3 does this also and is frustrating since I auto connect to wifi at home and work. Keep missing damn calls. My S2 started doing the same thing when I updated from GB to ICS. Maybe its a Samsung and ICS thing now that I think about it because the wife and kids all run ICS on HTC Amaze without issue.

Disappointing. Are you on T-mobile? (I expect yes as this, to my understanding, is the only US network licensed to use wifi calling?)
I am thinking of buying an S3 but I have to have wifi calling working on UK operator orange.

I think most of these threads are locked because XDA is trying to separate them all. Anyways, this is the only way I could respond. Since my first post, I have had more positive experiences with wifi-calling. I think it may be a little of both, slow connection and this newer implementation. On a slow connection it definitely wont work correctly which is what I would expect. What I mean is you can't successfully answer or make a call as the phone app will just hang. Going straight to Voicemail is another mystery altogether. I have 4g internet at home so there is no reason I can think of for that to happen. But like I said since my first post I have successfully made and answered several calls from home using wifi-calling and even a few from a location that had decent internet. Call quality was decent for what it is.
Guys, take a look at this thread. It concerns wifi signal dropping and re-enabling. That would certainly explain why some of the calls made to me when I was at home on wifi went to Voicemail even though I have 4g. I did notice some of this last week.

This happens on sprint phones as well...
I see this thread is open again. My experiences with wifi-calling have bore out what I thought: A weak signal will cause problems. I only wish that every call went to voicemail. What happens often with me is that wifi-calling will partially work, as in I can answer a call but the person can't hear me at all and I may catch one or two words from them. If they terminate the call, the phone app is fine, but if I terminate the call, the phone app hangs and freezes everything! Today it was so bad I had to pull the battery and reboot. Maybe wifi calls going to voicemail is an imperfect function that Samsung or rather T-Mobile built into the app. It kinda makes sense as this app could never complete a wifi call if you were connected to slow internet when it was a separate app. In any case I would rather have my wifi calls go straight to voicemail (and get a pop-up notification) than have the app try to work but wind up hanging my phone. What do you guys think?
I don't know about slow networks. I've already exchanged one T-Mobile S III because of Wi-Fi calling problems. My replacement works much better on my work network than it does on my home network and it is much, much slower than my home network is.

This isn't particularly good news for me. If it isn't software problem that manifests when coupled with a slow network then a future update won't fix it. That's what I was hoping the problem would turn out to be. If its hardware, then the time I have to do something about it is limited as I dropped my first phone and the replacement has a limited warranty, I think. Plus, I've paid to have invisi-shield placed on the front and back and would have to eat that cost if I get another replacement.
Epic Fail
I have this issue and am at my wits end to resolve it. Wifi calling is a major feature that worked fine(except echo) with my Vibrant. However, nothing I have tried will fix my ability to answer calls on WiFi. I have the SIM from the GS3 box. My E911 address exists since my bb8900. WiFi Power Save is off. All routers I use, Linksys E4200 and Linksys WNR1000, Linksys 614. Wireless N and G. T-mo CS could not help. I understand that the WiFi calling changed from UMA to IMS. No separate app. GS2 users with same issue. Anyone with a clue? Please help.

how did you turn off the wifi power save?
I experience the bad quality calls on wifi, at my workplace it is perfect, but at my home, its terrible.
my home network is faster than my workplace.
I think this is something to do with the firewall as well.
and I couldn't find the way to turn off firewall on the dam verizon fios actionnet router.

you can also try to broadcast the wifi on channel 3 only, that helped me in my case.
WPSM
There is a link earlier in this thread to another XDA thread. Phone app --> *#0011# --> menu button --> WiFi--> Press WPSM On/Off button.
My GS3 would drop a WiFi signal 3 inches from the router at work and 3 feet from the router at home. At least THAT is fixed now. However, I don't seem to get the same WiFi signal range as my Vibrant did using the same routers Trying the channel 3. I do have a few setting set to auto at least on my home router.

Yes, that's required, but not the underlying issue of the thread.
I've had wifi calling weirdness too. I called my sisters Verizon cell and there was no tone but after xx seconds it got her voicemail. When I call my phone on my house phone (Comcast) my phone rings but there's no tone on the house phone!
I NEVER get a ring. Just someone picks up our voicemail does.

That'll be nice if they finally being wifi calling that they've been promising for a while. Signal isn't the best where I live.
Hopefully they'll fix the ongoing LTE issues i've been having on ZVD as well. Sometimes the phone will drop to 3G and just stay there until I meddle with the settings.
Anyone know how upgrading goes if you've got it rooted? I haven't been on stock long with this phone and would rather not lose all of the customizations that i've done. (namely, replaced nearly all of LG's customized apps with stock looking ones)

I have the same problem with mine, but I don't think it's necessarily an issue with the phone directly. I just got my wife the Galaxy S5 Sport and the lady I dealt with at the Sprint store started to explain "This is a tri-band phone, and since we don't have Spark here, it may get stuck in 3G occasionally. To fix that just put it in airplane mode for a few seconds and then back out". I told her I'd been having the same issue with my G2 and she said it's common on all their Tri-band phones.

Well, I never had this problem with the phone while I was on CM11 so it's not the hardware, it's got to be an issue with their spark enabled radio firmware. (had ZV8 radio on the phone until I used the zvc .tot file to restore it to stock)

The problem and solution you describe are related to the eCSFBbug which has been fixed. It was an issue at the tower level and caused triband phones to stay on 3g. This should not be an issue any longer, so your Sprint rep needs to update their support knowledge.
Anyone who is able to return to LTE after being stuck on 3g for more than a few minutes by toggling airplane mode probably needs to perform the BSRtimer fix (G2 only)

Yeah.. good luck with that, I saw the procedure to get one's MTR, annoying looking and potentially "interesting" in a bad way.
Everyone says just use this dialer code except it doesn't work on ZVD and the alternative is the bad looking one.

All you need is your MSL which isn't hard to get. Sprint gives it to you anytime you activate a phone, and if you didn't save that record then just go to Sprint chat and ask for it. If they ask why tell them you are doing a hands free activation.

For those complaining about WiFi calling (I was one of them), just use Hangouts as it now has Google Voice integrated. No need for Sprint's crappy apps. Merge your Sprint number with GoogleVoice and install the Goigle Dailer app and Hangouts will give you a WiFi calling tab/Dialer.
Its great because now I get SMS messages on my laptop in Chrome browser as well as calls routed from my Sprint number.
T-Mobile supports only Google Voice "Lite", I just switched to them, but it works just as well. Despite my Sprint sim being deactivated (Ported to T-Mobile) , my G2 can make calls why WiFi calls.

That is odd, it was crystal clear for me compared to Sprint's network, new motto; "Sprint, disconnecting America"
Anyway try disabling SIP ALG on your router, some have a bad implementation of it. With my Netgear R8000 no issues here. It could also be due to wireless interference as it will be worse for the G2 as it only has one antenna unlike laptops which usually have 2. I live in a 2.4 congested neighborhood so I use the dual 5Ghz bands on my router as Im the only one here with a 5ghz supporting router.

Yeah, Shibbys tomato is why I specified my firmware. I am 15 feet from my 802.11ac router and am connected 5g on all my supported devices. It sounds like **** at work as well.. I have a SIP dialer on my phone for my work VOIP and it is crystal clear compared to hangouts on my phone.. It isn't Facebook messenger bad, but it isn't good. I have an airrave at home hooked up via a wireless bridge since I have no windows in the area near my router downstairs. It sits upstairs and all my calls using airrave are fantastic. Again I personally find that the hangouts voicecalls suck either in Stock or AOSP (tried both) My Brother has the same phone as does my sister in law and they quite agree. I have tried the sprint wifi calling on a friends phone and it sounded fantastic compared to my g2 in hangouts
Wow, I am sure they would update it get rid of any quirks in the future. Just curious, what router do you use? I used to have Netgear WNDR3800 but Netgear gave me an R8000 for free as a beta tester, range and VoIP are better.
I am not claiming to be 100% correct on this. But from what I have understood. ZVE will not bring wifi calling. The update is going to be minor ui enhancements dealing with lockscreen and a couple of widget updates. The update also addresses some minor bug fixes. Dont hold me to it. Just passing it aloing. I asked about LG G3 Ui and was told only lockscreen and widget enhacments. No launcher or new apps of any sort.

Will it support T-Mobile WiFi Calling?

Will it support T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling? I know Android M supports WiFi calling natively but will the carriers (T-Mobile in particular) need to do anything to allow it?
WiFi calling is very useful to me at home where cell signal is very poor.

Out of the box, at this moment, I don't think it does. However T-Mobile got it working on the Nexus 6 so I don't see why they couldn't add it with an update either before or after they ship. Think positive
Edit: found this from another thread in general section
"It’s also worth mentioning that*T-Mobile has already said*that the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P should have Wi-Fi Calling support at launch. While it’s expected to be turned off by default, T-Mo has said that after you pop in your SIM and hook onto the network, you should be able to turn the feature on."
Google or T-Mobile said via Twitter or the AMA or somewhere that it does support WiFi calling out of the box, but you need to set it to be on when you get your device - it isn't on by default.
The TBD support is for T-Mobile VoLTE/Band 12, which Google said they hope will be ready to go by ship day.

Excellent. Both will help.
Do texts go over wifi as well with wifi calling enabled? At work I only have access to wifi or Sprint (because I am in a basement of a building) and it has a Sprint DAS antenna system installed. I was thinking of switching to Project Fi due to it being on Sprint's network but if texts can go over wifi with T-mobile I would probably go with them since it would open me up to a huge choice of phones in the future (I kind of want to try a windows phone sometime)

Yes, texts will go over wifi. Hurry with that Windows phone, before the platform dies completely
Here's the Twitter post where I saw confirmation from T-Mobile on Wi-Fi calling: https://twitter.com/TMobile/status/648919023158206464
The initial question was on band 12 support (hoping we get this soon), but below there's a question on Wi-Fi calling to which they said yes. This was one of the main reasons I'm switching to one of the new Nexus phones - most phones support it on their stock ROMs, but once you get sick of stock and switch to a custom ROM you have to give up Wi-Fi calling.
Question for those of you on T-Mobile...
We all know WiFi calling is enabled, BUT, has anyone seen or regularly sees any kind of indicator that they're actually connected through WiFi calling when on a call?
I have seen twice on the signal tile, it say "T-Mobile WiFi calling". But that's it. I have the setting set to WiFi preferred and I even have the T-Mobile WiFi calling Asus router, but I don't know if it's actually using WiFi calling it not.
If I have zero signal indicated on the signal tile, but WiFi on, I'll get a message telling me to connect to a wireless network when I try to place calls.
I'm also assuming that means the signal indicator tile serves a dual purpose in regards to also showing WiFi signal strength. Because when I'm on WiFi, if I switch on " cellular preferred" (in WiFi calling settings), I'll see the LTE symbol next to the signal icon in the tile, but If I switch to "WiFi preferred", any cellular symbol (LTE, H, 3G) goes away.
On a side note, if you're in airplane mode, you can't make a phone call, even with WiFi on. On my S6 edge, I could, as long as I was connected to T-Mobile WiFi calling. But the phone would let you know with a status bar icon.
I really need WiFi calling in some places at work and I dumped the S6E partly because of the 5X utilizing WiFi calling, so that's why I've wasted all you folk's time in reading this long post. ☺
Well, son of a *****, look what finally popped up...
It was enabled by default as soon as I booted with the TMO sim and ran the update.

As was mine, but it didn't seem to want to work. I had "cellular preferred" set, but it seemed to hold onto the cell signal too much and not want to switch over. I set it to "WiFi preferred" but it still wasn't connecting yesterday. Today however, it's been all good with WiFi preferred. So it might have just been my work's network yesterday.
I still got to see if the phone will hand off the call to cellular before I leave it on WiFi preferred. I'm guessing it only will if I'm on band 12, but I'll test it anyways.

Wi-Fi Calling issues

Is Wi-Fi calling not turning on for any one else? Trying to turn it on a get a screen flicker and it stays off. The unhelpful Sprint person tried to say the G5 didn't have wifi calling, then changed her story to a outage in my area...
I've done the usual dialer codes trying to fix it with no luck. :/
I get the same thing with my Sprint G5. It just flickers when trying to turn on wifi calling. Frustrating since I get no service at my house. It's the one feature I really need.
I'm having the same problem.
On the phone with Sprint tech now.
Update:
Doing factory data reset now.
Glad to know it's not just me.. :/
A factory reset didn't fix it for me. Hopeful. you have better luck.

I'm sad to report that Sprint Tech Support is receiving multiple support requests for G5 owners who are unable to turn on Wi-Fi calling.
Sprint service is terrible in my area and unusable without WiFi calling.

Might see if they will give you a free AIRAVE. Only good at your home but better than nothing. and you might have to set the network to CDMA only when at home so it grabs that signals.
Hopefully with multi reports they get an update out quick.
I talked to 2 separate Sprint techs who tried many different combination such as reseting their back end info, hard resting my phone, turning off and on many settings, etc. WIFI calling still doesn't work. I had an AIRAVE before WIFI calling existed and will never go back to that. The AIRRAVE slowed my FIOS speeds down tremendously. Hopefully they'll release an update to fix this issue sooner than later. It seems to me like a software issue because of the way the wifi calling screen behaves....
Same issue, try to enable it, the screen flickers for a sec and cannot be enabled.

Same issue. I did a factor data reset as well. Did not resolve the issue. Sprint and LG tech support were unaware of the issue when I chatted with them. LG opened up a ticket though.
Any updates on this? Also, dang, the LG G5 Sprint forums are a ghost town....
Stopped by a store today because I wanted them to physically inspect my G5 and note my account.
The tech wouldn't even touch my G5.
Just said 'We are aware of the issue".
So, can someone please provide a fix or let me know what carrier/MVNO I should move to?
I'm ready to jump to Verizon pre-paid, as long as the service is 100% as good as Verizon post paid.
Wifi calling still not working after new update
Got a update to zv3 still didnt fix wifi calling issue

Hello all..Well here's what I have found speaking to a few Sprint technical support representative and customer service agents. Apparently the Wi-Fi calling is not available for the lgg5 as of yet, it is supported the LG G2 G3 G4. The Sprint representative assured me that it would be available in the near future as that system got updated. What completely baffles me is that I have an Galaxy 6 Edge on the account and the Wi-Fi calling works out of the box. My request to one of you guys is can you guys call Sprint support and verify that you have Wi-Fi calling add to your particular mobile number account and if so does the Wi-Fi calling work.

I should get mine this afternoon and can try to check. I would guess they're trying to sound cool about it when it's actually a SNAFU.

WiFi calling

Hey Guys,
Moved from the original pixel to the S9. On the pixel you could turn on WiFi calling through an option on the phone dialer. I can't see the same option on this dialer. Went into Vodafone and they told me that the phone defaults to WiFi calling when the signal is poor. Is this the case or am I being fobbed off? Making calls is really poor when in my house.
Cheers
It needs to be switched on in Connections/WiFi calling in Settings.
i believe it only works it the phone is bought from Vodafone - i know i asked them once and said only Vodafone phones can do wi-fi calling
Bobbed into three today to ask about it even unlocked handsets should have the Wi-Fi calling option she said wait for the samsung update which is out on Friday so hopefully all handsets follow suit

This seems to be carrier dependant. With a three SIM I do it see the option but I can if I switch to an EE one.

I have wifi calling available on my s9 plus which I bought direct from Samsung, go to the dialer, click the 3 dots in the top right corner. Then select settings, scroll to the bottom and you will see the wifi calling option which can be toggled on or off
It's not on mine I'm on three UK but on BTU handset
I'm hoping the update on Friday will give me the option

Ok so here's the kicker...the option appeared and I turned it on. Since then I have factory reset my phone (massive battery drain). Upon booting back up the option had disappeared again. Spoken to Vodafone and they have disabled and enabled it in my account but still no option to turn it on on my phone. Also got the march security update last night and still no option. This is driving me crazy
I've also got an S9 direct from Samsung (BTU), on Vodafone UK
- I'm assuming because they allowed WiFi calling on the S6, S7 and S9 with non-Vodafone firmware, that they'll allow it on the S9. It's the only thing I really need.
I hate carrier firmware, but would flash for WiFi calling as my signal at home is rubbish - I flashed my S8 on Three to get WiFi calling and VoLTE. But I'm a bit scared to flash the S9 on Vodafone in case I get the German CSC issue crop-up (does anyone know exactly what conditions cause this to happen?)
I'm not actually too fussed about VoLTE on Vodafone as their 3G signal is pretty strong everywhere (apart from at my house!), but with Three VoLTE was vital to get a reliable signal in a lot of places.
What is this update on Friday (today?) - is this confirmed or is this just something that the Vodafone staff (or Three?) are fobbing people off with? First I've heard of it.
And it's gone again...trying to explain to the "technical" guys at the call centre results in me losing my temper and them supposedly ringing me back in 1 hours time because it will be fixed... Seriously getting p****d off!!!
Any further news on this?
I've got the toggle set to on, but still no wifi calling (just says not connected to network when trying to phone). I have also noticed the toggle switch appear and disappear at will - normally restarting the phone gets it back
So I'm guessing the only "fix" is to flash the three firmware on it?

Hi, i checked the Three website and the s9 doesn't yet show as compatible for Three wifi calling, i'm assuming that when they do it'll get enabled via a carrier settings update or something for unlocked phones (my unlocked iPhone worked this way).
For a list of the compatible handsets got to the website, not sure what the rules are about posting links so search for 'three wifi calling' and it's the top result in google.
True it doesn't list them, but upon speaking with three they state the device is supported for WiFi calling, but only if purchased directly through three. Reason for this is the device them comes with there carriers software to enable the feature.

Ah thanks, in that case it's false hope for me and i'm now completely stuck! really don't want to flash firmware.....
I'm on O2 and what they have you do is download My O2. Select the option to enable 4G and WiFi calling and it checks compatibility and activates it within 24 hours. Then follow the guide in this thread to enable WiFi calling.
The only problem is I can't tell if it's working or not. It does appear that the line is open longer. My current router doesn't provide the depth required to monitor traffic on devices connected to it. Annoying.
There seems to be a software issue with the s9 and wifi calling. For me, its available (Icon shows in taskbar) , then next minute it's gone. After a reboot it comes back. I made a wifi call when I saw the icon again, and it switched to 4g mid call and the icon didn't come back again until after yet another reboot. It always bombs out pretty quickly after a reboot. I woke up this morning and saw the icon return on it's own this time (hadn't rebooted since last night) only for it to then disappear yet again. It's very buggy. Got an iphone here too which annoyingly works flawlessly with wifi calling so it's not an issue with my router.
Wifi calling
I just pull my notification panel down all the way and wifi calling is just there I'm assuming you have to be connected to use it. It would be good if it was able to use wifi signals while you were out without having to be connected. Touch wood my calls have been good so I only use it at home when phone reception is not as strong

On a U.K. DUOs model on O2 WiFi calling is fine.
Do remember the phone is a bit picky about the WiFi network and at some places just wont enable it.
