Is there a large speed differance between internal and SD memory ... loading programs and data ?
Yes, huge. View attachment 4698499

I have similar speeds, for the internal card.
With a 400gb SanDisk Ultra UHS-I card "up to 100MB/s" read SPEED I have a write speed that's slower, ~ 15 MB/s. Read was 80MB/s. I guess getting 80 MB/s is "up to 100MB/s"
For the fun of it, I tried my USB-C memory stick and got 73MB/s read and 15 MB/s write.
I have video on my external card, and have not had any read issues.

Yea, my external microsd card is of the same lineage as yours, I bought the 200g a1 UHS-1 card and on my PC I was getting 87mbs and 40 something mbs read/write using Crystaldiskmark which is consistent with what I'm getting using the Android benchmark app. You're write speed should be higher than that. I just had an issue with an old "Ultra" card and the write sped dropped to under 10mbs. I logged onto Sandisk and they agreed that it was bad and are sending me a new one. If I were you I would use Crystaldiskmark v6 and run some tests on your PC and screen capture the results. If you continue to get write speeds like that I'd create a ticked on the Sandisk site and see if they will replace it.
Thanks for the suggestion. SanDisk is good about warranties. I had a USB Dual Micro 128gb stick they replaced when it fell apart. Recently it faulted write protect only, and they offered to replace it again, but I can't wipe it because it is read only, and it has tax return data on the stick. It's only $35ish bucks, so I'm not sure I'll send it for replacement. I was thinking later this year of upgrading from 400gb to 512gb, I may wait until then.
so If I want to get serious about running linux on the s4 I probably should upgrade to a 256gb
model
The higher-speed reads are from a "cached read" which says more about the cache speed than the internal flash speed. In Android parlance, the "Internal SD Card" is the storage partition of the internal flash, which is slower, because it's reading the flash speed, not the cache speed. The physical SD card will be listed as "External SD Card", you would need to read that, not cached, to see how they compare. There are many microSD cards available with higher speeds than the internal storage in the screenshot, so if the SD card reader on the phone can keep up with them, external SD cards may be faster at sequential reads and writes.
It isn't shown in the screenshot, but random reads and writes mater more under some use cases. The SD card will likely have much lower random read and write speed, because of the extra latency in the SD card interface.
In the screen capture, the card I have circled as the Sandisk Ultra is in fact a physical card inserted in the Tab, why on that particular benchmark is says "internal" is unknown. The Sandisk card, while not the fastest isn't bad on read for an SD card as it reads close to 100mbs when tested on my PC but is nowhere near as fast as the real internal memory, cached or not.

ok,
so i bought an 8gb kingston micro sd card, tested it with hw id and got 8mb/s write speed,
partitioned the card using gparted (allign to mib) with a 1gb ext and the remainder as fat32,
used sd card tester on my desire and it says write speed is 3mb/s or under,
so i tried sd speed increase set to 2048kb, atill 3mb/s or less write speed,
any ideas?
He,
I got also a Kingston 8GB Class 10 in my Desire (1GB Ext4 & Rest Fat32).
My speeds just for your ref.: 6.2MB/s writing, 16.4 MB/s reading with 2048kb.
I tried nearly every setting in SD speed increase but could not get over 6.x MB/s
---edit
just saw that we are running the same ROM (same kernel). maybe its ROM related as I also not have full 10MB/s? or its the SD card?
well i reflashed the rom without repartitioning the card and now im getting 6mb/s write speed,
better but still not as good as when i test the cards speed on my pc,
im not that worried about improving read speeds, i was just hoping that the faster write speed would solve some of the video recording lag i am getting,
maybe the cards you guys bought is not genuine but a chineese replica. you know how many fakes ciculate in market.
I have class 4 Sandisk 16gb card and I get 5mb writing speed. 12mb reading...
if a class 10 card has 6mb then I would doubt either the Testing software or the genuineness of the card

but when i do a speedtest from my pc via a card reader i get 8mb/s when i test the same cards speed in my phone i get 6mb/s, where does the 2mb/s go?
Try formating the cards on a pc. Full format/ factory condition. Then insert them on a stock rom phone to test the speeds. It's the only way to check them and be 100% sure.

SD speed reports my pny 8gb class 10 as writing at 8mb/s and reading 28 MB/s.
I have a 1gb ext4 partition after a 6.5 gb odd fat32 partition. Currently running leedroid latest R5 HD Rom.

Did you try this tutorial?
Now here's a question for all of you:
What is the MicroSD Card that is included with your phone? I know it's a 16GB, but does yours have a company branded on it, and also what class is your SD card?
The reason I ask this is because I want to know if they switched the SD Card on my phone with a crappy one and took the good one just before I picked it up. The SD card that came with my phone is just a plain generic Class 2 card. CLASS 2!! It doesn't even have where it is made at. I'm thinking, are you serious?!?! The transfer rate is so horrible, averaging only at 1.5MBps. Takes me over 30 minutes to transfer about one 1GB of files.
My friend who got the rezound at least got a Class 4 card, even though it's generic and made in Taiwan. But his transfer rate is averaging at 15MBps.
So I just wanna double check with all of you and make sure we all have the same type of SD card.
p.s. Also, this could be the reason why the phone sometimes perform sluggishly. I have a feeling when it pulls anything from the SD Card, may it be a large app, music or videos etc, it will have to wait to read from it.
OH! could this be the MAIN reason behind the slow response when taking pictures? I read that this phone has a horrible camera speed, but it might be due to the SD Card being slow and can only write at very low speed to the card.
I also noticed the slow performance of the included micro sd card, and I can't even access it from my card reader, but only through the phone's "mass storage" mode. Anyway just ordered a Sandisk class 4 32GB card from amazon...
The default card that came with mine is a Class 4 8GB made by Kingston. It doesn't say Kingston on it, but I have an actual Kingston SD card to compare it to.

8GB class 4?? wow that is small in size, although it is a class 4 card. Livid, is it because you are on Bell? Could this be carrier related? Also, how is your camera? Is it having that speed issue in between pictures?

bmxant, I took some pics and at full res, they average at around 1.3-1.5 MB, which is just right there with the speed, giving it a second or 2 delay in storing/saving them onto the sd card.
Sandisk Class4 16gb in mine. Mine was ordered and sent directly from AT&T site...I'm leaning toward them swapping out the card on yours.
If you're only writing at 1.5Mb's, that would definitely cause an extra second of lag. Would be nice if we could see a comparison between the Class 2 SD card vs Class 4.
How much cheaper could they get? It's bad enough the phone has 4GB of internal storage. They should of included either a 32GB Class 2, or 16GB Class 4.
Edit: Just read Namuna's post. Why would they swap out the card?

Alright thanks, I just need some more confirmations and I can visit the store again and confront them with it. I will make them open a fresh box in front of me and check it, unless of course they've swapped all in that store lol!
@aquariuz23: It probably is carrier related. You guys got double on the SD storage and RAM storage versus what we got. I feel a little screwed in that regard, but meh.
For photo taking, it only took one second to snap the picture and store it on the card. The gallery took 5 seconds to read 84 pictures that were stored on the SD card.

That sounds pretty good, what does Antutu say your write speed is?
Topram Class6 16GB here. SD Tools report 18.5MB/sec read and 5.5MB/sec write, which is pretty accurate for C6. (btw, card manufactured in 2009)
This phone I bought used, can't confirm the card is the original.
6.3 MB/s write and 13 MB/s read. It's about average for a Class 4 SD card.
what do u guys use to test the read/writes of the sd card? I wanna do a test on mine as well.

I always used Antutu
Tested with SD Tools
http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-C...&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325197909&sr=1-11
Think this is worth it?
I am getting an average of 2.9MB/s Write and 11.1MB/s Read. Seems like a typical class 2 card. Took it a while to run the test too since it's so slow lol.
I got 5.4MB/s write, 15.5MB/s read (Antutu) on the 16GB Class 2 card from my Captivate that I wiped and stuck in the Nitro and gave the one that came with it to my Captivate (running hacksung's ICS). Is the included card that bad?
According to AnTuTu:
3.4 MB/s write
>50 MB/s read
According to SD Tools:
5.7 MB/s write
20 MB read
Nothing like some consistency between utils.

That just crippled my trust in AnTuTu's tests...sorry but there is no microSD card with >50mb/sec read speed, it's impossible.
I got a Samsung 32 GB Class 10 microsd card today and formatted the it into NTFS in Windows 7, and copied a big file, the speed met the nominal value about 13 MB/s. But I found out later that android does not recognize NTFS format. Therefore I reformatted the card into FAT32 in Galaxy S2. But when I copied the same file into the card under Windows 7, the writing speed decreases to about 5 MB/s. Later I used the app called "SD Card Speed Tester" to test the speed, it told me the card is a Class 6 card!!!
Is there anyone having the same problem? The only solution I can come up with is to format the sd card into ext2 and try again. Can anyone tell me how to do it with the phone, is there an app for that?
Thank you in advance!
I'm sorry to be the one telling you this but you might gotten a fake one...Where did you buy your sd card?
I bought it from a German company. Nevertheless, I just test the card (still with FAT32) with the original SD adapter under Windows 7, the writing speed is about 10MB/s, which is more close to the nominal value. So I think it is the problem between GS2 and the card.
Any idea to format the card with ex2 by GS2?

You should see better performance with NTFS, that is normal. Still, your speeds are unusually low.

Finally, I test the card with adapter under Windows 7 on my laptop using h2testw for NTFS and FAT32 format, both of them have the same performance, about 10 MB/s for writing. And I also inserted the card with FAT32 format in milestone, the writing speed is still about 5 MB/s, I did not test with NTFS format.
The card costs me 30 euro, and it functions normally with adapter, so I don't bother to return it. However, I am warning you guys, do not buy SAMSUNG 32 GB Class10 sd card, it can only achieve around 5 MB/s with FAT32 format.
Derp.
If you can fill the card it's not a fake, the only problem here is your expectations from the i9100's sd card reader.
I know, this is probably a silly question, but am I the only one that notices how devices only tend to label compatibility with Micro SD cards based on size, and not speed or class? For instance, my Galaxy Tab S2, it simply says it can take up to a 128gb SD card, but it does not say what speed it will work with.
The reason I ask, is that I am now in the market for a 128gb card, and yet I don't want to buy an expensive fast one, if my tablet will not be able to take advantage of the premium speed. Anyone have any thoughts?
I don't know about the speed but I have a SanDisk 200 GB that runs fine.
I think that any phone or tablet that will read 128 GB will also work with 200 GB.
Shofar
Don't worry
Any MicroSD card will work in your Galaxy Tab S2. But then, you might have to format it. When you buy the card, keep an eye out on the speed class- higher speeds are much better!
You are looking for a 128GB card, and I use one in my tablet so don't worry. It will work! But I seriously recommend a higher performance card because it can get very slow with cheaper cards.
Hope this helps!
I just tested a regular class 10 card and a UHS-1 card. Both tested at 9mb write and 40mb read. The same UHS-1 card tested over 40mb write using an Odroid C1 board.

No, that means that "class" classification is outdated. Fast cards (read and write) bear the UHS-I "U3" classification, "U1" is slower.
In future, only buy U3 cards, like the SanDisk Extreme family.

I guess you missed the part where I stated that the UHS card had a write speed of 40mb using the Odroid C1 board. Obviously, when it only writes 9mb in the S2, then the S2 itself doesn't support the higher speeds. So, no matter ability the card has, if the device's bus doesn't support the higher speed, then the card's ability is meaningless. Any card you use is going to be limited by the bus speed of the device.
Paying extra for a better card is pointless if the device doesn't support the higher speed.

This was what I meant, I'll make sure to buy a decent one but not the "best". Quick question, how are the internal memory write speeds? Actually, what card should I get then? How fast is the internal memory write speeds? Thanks!
Just tested the 32 GB SanDisk Extreme (U3 but not an Extreme Plus or Pro) in my T815 with the "A1 SD Bench" app:
read 59,70 MB/s or 61,04 MB/s, write 22,75 MB/s or 24,70 MB/s. The second numbers are the result of using the "accurate mode" of the test app.

For our fast S2, this one is too slow in writing. Class 10 means only fast reading.
You better choose a Samsung or SanDisk with the "U3" designation, which means fast writing, like this:

FOR EVERYBODY :
I have bought a LEXAR 633x 200GB !!!
And it works !
Speed : read 95Mo/s write : 40Mo/s
For 90$, it do the job very well !
The only better sdcard is the 256GB SAMSUNG but it's out of price !
So a higher performance card or 200GB eill make the tab s2 go faster then? What amount of storage and sd card do you recommend?
It won't make the tab S2 go faster. But it will allow faster read/writing to higher performance sd card compared to a regular one. The S2 can only go as fast as it's hardware can, with or without a microsd card.
Figured I'd share my results with my 2015 S2 8.0 (SM-T710). Right now I have a Samsung EVO Pro (U1) 64GB in my tablet and it does ok, but I'm just about to upgrade it to a new 128GB EVO PLUS (U3) card so got some results below. Note the previous 32GB card I had was waay worse, much older and only did 4MB/sec on writes (forgot the brand) but things have at least come a long way in the years since.
Results as follows...
Samsung EVO Pro 64GB (U1) - 70.53MB/sec Read - 72.86MB/sec Write (Fresh Format)
Samsung EVO Plus 128GB (U3) - 69.91MB/sec Read - 43.40MB/sec Write (Fresh Format)
Samsung EVO Pro 64GB (U1) - 70.07MB/sec Read - 17.81MB/sec Write (Only 4.9GB Free)
Samsung EVO Plus 128GB (U3) - 63.08MB/sec Read - 27.12MB/sec Write (Only 65.9GB Free)
For the heck of it tried the transfer rates on the PC for the 2 cards as well.
Samsung EVO Pro 64GB (U1) - 86.85MB/sec Read - 80.77MB/sec Write (Fresh Format)
Samsung EVO Plus 128GB (U3) - 87.04MB/sec Read - 82.27MB/sec Write (Fresh Format)
Though got to say while cards neck and neck, small file writes where 5x greater on the new U3 card (.5MB/sec vs 2.5MB/sec) on 4k writes.
Hi all,
I've been using my MOTO G5 for almost a month now and I'm pretty satisfied with it tho I've encountered some small annoyances with this phone.
But just yesterday I bought a Lexar MicroSDHC UHS-I 32GB for my phone and tried to format it as an internal storage replacing my Sandisk MicroSD Class 4.
After formatting it as an internal storage in my surprise the phone prompts that the memory card that I've used was "too slow" (considering this is a class 10) then reverted it back to portable storage, restarted my phone and then tried the same procedure but still the "too slow" message prompt was showing.
I felt frustrated with it, re-inserted my Sandisk MicroSD Class 4 then formatted it as my internal storage but the message "too slow" never prompt.
I just want to know if there is someone who had experience this unfortunate thing? what did you to solve this issue? or should I stick with my class 4 sd card or better yet stick with the 16gb internal storage of my phone?
Thanks!
yes, i tried to use an A-Data class 10 uhs-1 32 gb and i received the same message, but i thought my card is defect, it was used in my dvr camera and after 10 sec it stopping to recording, i think is broken. On the phone after 2 days, it blocked my phone, no one app working, everything was blocked. I remove the card and restart the phone and everything was fine. Sorry for my english, but i think that specs of the card its lies
Try running this app. Tests if the card is fake or not. There are quite a few around online that are have MUCH less than advertised capacity / speed and i'm pretty sure that the internal storage option on Nougat requires a proper fast card.
