Looking for phone recommendation to meet criteria including infrared emitter - About xda-developers.com

I think my Samsung Galaxy S5 is dying so I'm looking at options to replace it but I have criteria which might be hard to satisfy:
User-removable battery
MicroSD card slot
Infrared emitter (for remote control)
Fingerprint scanner
AMOLED screen (for lower power consumption when displaying black backgrounds)
Phone case available with hidden compartment for bank cards (currently using Otterbox Commuter Wallet case; a soft case which is obviously a wallet is not okay)
Not a Samsung phone (I don't like their history of price fixing and I'm still annoyed that they released a phone with an AMOLED screen and white backgrounds; they should have customised the theme to save power; I had to root the phone to achieve this)
I'm flexible on the AMOLED screen for a phone that meets my other needs. Does anyone know any candidates more powerful than the Galaxy S5 from, like, the last two or three years? Thanks!

Samsung Focus S Case - UPDATED W/ AT&T Link

So, after an extensive search, I found a Samsung Focus S case made by Ventev. I bought one through Cartronics Accessories via Priority Mail for like $19. I will let ya know how it is for whoever wants to know.
Here's a link to Cartronics listing of case - Two Piece - Two-Tone Black & Chrome Finish Case
Here's a link to Ventev's site listing of case - VENTEV Case
UPDATE:
AT&T now has four new cases (3 are the same model w/ different color) on their website - AT&T Samsung Focus S Cases
These are also available on eBay for ~ $14.00 I just came back from my local AT&T store where I finally got to play with Focus S and I must say I came away underwhelmed by its screen, it looks much darker/dimmer then Focus screen, even with brightness set to Manual and High. Combine that with complete lack of accessories and we end up with a device that neither carrier nor ODM are interested in supporting. Heck, even Samsung Flash has a case ($50!!!) and a screen protector. I am seriously feeling let down here.

Agreed seems like a redheaded stepchild compared to the flash.
Oh well test driving until Titan next week.

There is a new display setting called 'auto display intensity' on the Focus S that needs to be shut off. After that it is much brighter than the Focus when both are on high.

It's on the page called Extra Settings. There is a bug that won't let the setting survive a soft reset so you'll need to shut it back off each time.
AT&T now lists three cases for Focus S; two from Case Mate and one from AGF. Unfortunately there are no pictures yet but still it's a progress.

The pictures are there now. Three from Case Mate (three colors), and one from AGF. Although the Case Mate ones there's two types - Barely There or Tough.
FYI, I tried the Case-Mate Tough case, and had two issues: 1) really hard to get the case on in a "nice" manner, 2) the rubbery inner liner goes OVER the buttons (power, etc). After putting on the outer hard case over that, had power button issues. I would turn my phone off, but it would turn back on immediately. I think the rubbery inner case was pressing on the power button ever so slightly...very annoying. I returned it.
Side question. Does anyone know (or has tried this) if the Samsung Galaxy S II cases will work with this phone. They are pretty much the same form factor right? The only diff I can see is maybe the camera on the Galaxy is wider, where the Focus S is taller. Thoughts? There are lots of options for that Galaxy model...not so much for the Focus S as yet.
Thanks!

They won't, the AT&T and international version SGS2 are more squared shaped corners and camera cut out is different. TMo/Sprint are too big.
Same problem with my casemate tough as well.
Any cases with kickstand?
I'm REALLY looking for a hard case for my Focus S with a kickstand that I'd use for:
*video calling
*night stand/alarm clock
*watching videos
Anything like that out there??
I've bought both the 2-piece Ventev snap-on hard case for my Samsung Focus S and the AGF gray pattern gel case, and I like the AGF gel case much better. I'm not a fan of gel cases usually (I prefer hard plastic, snap-on cases with a non-slip finish), but I did not like the Ventev case at all - while it's a hard plastic, snap-on case and it fits well, the lower half is black with a soft, rubberized covering (which is nice), but the top is a shiny chrome-like finish that's a fingerprint magnet! The AGF gel case fits the phone very well and is a nice darker gray finish described a a "microfiber". Whatever it is, it's very comfortable to hold and not slippery at all! It's definitely not worth the $40 AT&T is charging for it, but I got it for 35% off this past week from AT&T online.
I really want a Case-Mate Barely-There case in black for my Focus S (I had that case on my Verizon Trophy WP7 handset, and I really liked it!), but at the moment I believe it only comes in blue and pink.

Easecase E5 review

Just a very quick review of my Easecase E5 which arrived about a week ago.
You can see pictures of it by search eBay for "Easecase E5 galaxy note" (without quotes), there's one here : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E5-EASECA..._MobilePhonesCasesPouches&hash=item5ae4059699
(I did get a bit of a shock when I saw that - that is my actual one - with my name on it, I was just searching for one at random)
Delivery time:
As mentioned in other parts of this forum, delivery times for Easecase are pretty woeful. I ordered on the 25th of November and, it arrived here a few days over a month later in Sweden. The problem seems to be largely that they ship via China Post which is quit slow - they dispatched it (with trackable* shipping) within about a week. I bought it through eBay, so I am not sure if they have another outlet, and, they make it very clear on their eBay items that they will take a looong time to ship, so, I can't take any points off them there.
Build quality:
It is beautifully put together. There's a slot running down the inner spine for the stylus, and my name is embossed on the front. I would characterise it as high quality.
Outside:
I opted for the magnetic clasp. It isn't a very strong magnet, but does the job.
Apart from the clasp, there's just the embossing on the outside, and, a neat seam around the edge.
Inside:
There are 2 bill pockets inside, both of which are *very* deep. They're about as deep as the note is high.
When it is fully opened, there are 5 credit card pockets on the left. Note that these seem to be individual pockets, separated from each other internally. Cards fit vertically into these pockets. The front of the pockets stretches a bit over 2 thirds of the way from the far left of the case to the spine. Behind the pockets is a sleeve about 1/3 wider than the short side of a credit card where you could fold bank notes* (remember this, I'll come back to it.
As I said, along the inner spine is slot for the stylus.
On the right is where the not goes. It slots in (quite snugly) from the top. The top is open, so you can get to the headphone port. There's a hole in the left for the volume control, a hole in the right for the power button, and, a hole in the bottom for access to the USB port.
Looking at the front, the home and hardware buttons are all accessible as part of the screen area. They've also neatly cut out around the top speaker and, the front camera.
Protection:
Very good. If the magnetic clasp doesn't come undone during a fall, then, it'd be very hard to break the screen. It is nice thick leather, and you might even be able to drop a brick on it when closed without breaking the screen.
It still won't help you if you drop it in the toilet as some poor chap here has apparently done.
Usage:
It is very bulky. Like one of those filofax jobs people used to (still?) have.
I'm used to big gadgets, so I cope, but you wouldn't get it into tight jeans pockets. I do squeeze it, with some discomfort into my front trousers pocket.
You don't want to talk on the phone with the cover on for more than brief calls, you look like an idiot. Most of the time I pull it out of the cover for calls, or, use a bluetooth headset.
Using the rear camera requires removing from the cover.
General browsing/emailing etc is fine with the cover on.
Fortunately removing the phone is a fairly quick procedure, as is putting it back it. I imagine it'll get easier still as the leather stretches a touch.
One annoyance is, as the leather reaches right to the top of the touch screen, if the phone slips up slightly, it can be difficult or impossible to pull down the notifications bar. When in landscape, this isn't an issue as the phone can't move left/right in the case.
Summary/thoughts:
I wish I'd bought the one without the bank note pockets. That'd reduce the bulk considerably and you could still stick notes behind your cards (see * above). You can also use the rear facing camera with the non-bank note version (E4).
On balance, I am pleased I bought it though, it is of high quality and, it is great having your phone and wallet all in the one thing - it also means you can ring your wallet to find it when you are in a hurry to head to work
If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
My recommendation for anyone thinking of getting one of these is to get the E4 and not this.
They don't seem to have any E4's on eBay at the moment for the note, but I am sure I have seen one there. Here's one for the Desire HD - I am sure it gets the point across.

Two quick thoughts:
1) When calling, can't you fold the case cover back 180 degrees?
2) Some launchers (adwlauncher does this) allow to swipe down anywhere to lower the notification bar, so you don't need to touch the very top.

No, the banknotes pockets kind of open so it gets more bulky and wants to spring back to about 180 degrees (where 0 is closed, 180 is wide open and 360 is the position you suggest), but I suspect you could with the E4 model.

Yes - I read about that setting a while back, but have never used it, thanks for reminding me - it is now enabled for the swipe down gesture (hide dock was annoying me anyway).
Hi, thanks for the review, i've been stuck deciding between the E5 and the E4, due to the E5 having the bill slot, which i would think is really good compared to folding the bills under the cards.
Can you take a picture of the case when it's fully loaded, both open and closed?
e.g. all card slots used, and the bills folded and slotted under the cards
That would probably help sway my decision, if that slot + cards do not bulk up the entire wallet.

I love those case, but it's sucks when they cost so much!
It's should be 10$ max.
peanuts and monkeys
i hope to order this case by the end of this month, i've emailed them some questions on customisation, hopefully it's permitted, then can go forward with this.
the E5 with wallet style slot is definitely too bulky. I bought one for my Desire HD with modified size to fit the DHD with Otterbox. After receiving it, tested once with DHD and sit in my drawer collecting dust ever since.

Ya know I thought the same thing at first, but I just got a pack of 3 extra batteries and I find I can put two of em in the wallet and also a cleaning cloth and everything fits great.
In terms of customizations I wonder if a small bit for some change could be added.
Its beautiful.
Easecase E5 looks good.
This is a genuine leather case, and very good quality construction. They also responded well to my customization request (I wanted a 65mm horizontal belt loop added to mine).
Only $10 max is out of the question. Worth 3 to 4 times that much. It includes branding of your own name as well. It's a very classy leather case/wallet.
Could you please share a photo were the Note is next to the case just to compare the size of the case?
Hey great review. I really love the customization of these cases and I recently bought a galaxy note us version from ATT so ive been doing some research for a quality wallet type case for my note (will arrive monday) I was just wondering, would this case or the E4 case which is what ill probably get be fine for the american ATT version. Im pretty sure the dimensions are about the same but im not so sure about the button placements or the charger placements.
The only thing I dont like is the shipping time but not much I can do about it but this case seems to be the best so far that ive found besides the vintage leather case but those dont come in black and have magnetic strips.
Any reply would be appreciated.
So just to recap - will my US ATT galaxy Note i717 be a good match with this case?

When I dealt with them, I found them quite responsive, I suggest asking them if it'll fit the i717 - odds on if it doesn't they'll have one that does even if they haven't advertised it yet.
Although I haven't seen it, I'd definitely recommend the E4 over the E5 - I find I don't really need the slots for notes (you can slip folded notes in the bit behind where credit cards go anyway) and, it the banknote pockets block the camera (by necessity) which drives me a bit mad.

"Official" Samsung Galaxy Book cover

Hi Guys,
I have found this one
http://www.ebay.es/itm/New-PU-Leath...ng-Galaxy-Note-10-1-N8000-White-/130774374551
It looks like the official one. Have some one bought it? If so, is the quality acceptable? I am thinking to get one of this, but my main concern is to find a poor quality.
I use the official Samsung book cover that I purchased in grey from the UK, it is the one I use daily as it is very practical for my uses however unless you transport it in a padded case, there is still a risk of damage due to the original book case being so thin and does not close with any kind of locking mechanism.
I overcame this with an excellent solution using a protective zipper pouch called the zeroshock case which is padded inside and has excellent shock/drop proof qualities. Once out of the zeroshock case, in use it has a thin form factor which is perfect for practical uses around the office.
The case also folds to the perfect angle for typing or handwriting using a software keyboard or S-pen in its lower position and also stands up at an upright angle for when you want to watch videos or use it for typing when using a standard /Bluetooth hardware keyboard.
I have taken some pictures of the case demonstrating the above and will add pictures to show you my setup.
Edit: pictures added

I have the cover, and I really like it because of the slim profile. I have the white version of the note and book cover, and I don't want to carry it around for fear of it getting discolored of dirty looking.
Hasc,
Quick question about your pictures. Where did you get the zero case? Also it seems in your pictures you have 2 different pens - one looks like the galaxy note pen and another with the eraser? Can you identify the items in the picture? I understand the s-pen nubs and ring holder to extract them, but i'm curious about the last picture why you have a usb to micro-usb slot cord. What do you use that for?

sledgie,
I got the zero case from gearzap.com - product id: 19906 - Zeroshock 3 Netbook Case 8.9"-10.2" - black @ 15.95 Inc VAT
pens - black one is the standard galaxy note one with eraser, white one is the Bluetooth pen that is charged by the black micro usb lead on the picture
The white usb adapter is used to connect usb sticks, mice, hardware keyboards etc.

I have finally taken the decision to buy it (http://www.ebay.es/itm/New-PU-Leath...ng-Galaxy-Note-10-1-N8000-White-/130774374551), although it is not the official one (I think the official one is too expensive, 10% of the tablet's value ). I will post the pictures as soon as I get it. On the other hand, I have already a zipper pouch case which is the one I am using daily, therefore I will have a good match at the end.
Damage to Note due to magnet?
Hi i have purchased this cover and found out that the magnet causes the spen to be less accurate in the areas close to where the magnet is.. does anyone know if this can cause a permanent damage? In other thread someone posted this:
I found this in Galaxy Note manual
' Do not use carrying cases or accessories with magnetic closures or allow
your device to come in contact with magnetic fields for extended periods of
time. ' Page 180
but i dont know if this counts i mean.. samsung made it!!

[Q] Used Note 2 vs new Nexus 4...which one?

Hi folks. I have sold my Galaxy s2 more from an eager impulse to upgrade, and I have been rolling without a phone now because I couldn't simply decide which to get. At some point I even regret I have sold the s2 which was perfectly fine. But now since I did it I said at least to make a substantial upgrade. I have a micro sim with unlimited data until next year in may so I won't upgrade until then, even more, I would like to keep it longer than that.
I narrowed my choices to
S3 (used grade B - 260£),
Nexus 4 (new with 1 year warranty - 288£)
and Note 2 (used grade C - 305£, or 320£ grade B)
the used phones come with 60 days warranty only, no box or other accesories except USB cable (basically phones from recycling websites, so in good condition)
I think I took out s3 out of the list now..because for 20£ more you can get new N4
so it's between n4 and n2
I don't mind about the storage but it is a + obviously
I like to have good battery (when travelling or using google maps I don't want to get in trouble, though there are those mobile chargers available)
I used the n2 in the shop and I could control 85% of the touchscreen with one hand.
I like being able to read kindle, kobo ebooks on the phone, and having a swiss knife like n2 is
I like music and podcasts.
I am worried about N4: back of glass, god knows how many times I dropped s2 or bumped it., although I think aftermarket backcover will be available or could stick a dbrand skin
battery,
battery: from what I've red it looks like it's average, although pretty sure it's better than my used s2
Worried about N2
only 60 days warranty
price is higher, even if used condition (grade C might have scratches and scuffs but I heard very good reviews and it generally goes one class better)
worried about size, is it more fragile because the size? can I use it while running listening to music?
It really is a though call...but I need a phone, thought to rebuy a s2 or a htc one s/x (used of course) but considering I will be using this for more than a year with full blown unlimited internet, I might as well make a significant upgrade...
Which one should I get?
I was luck to use a Galaxy Nexus 4 and then move on to the SGN II
The Note is great doesn't take long to get used to the size.
Downside to the Nexus as I see it... Not as much support/custom roms etc
The Nexus is limited IMO - no external storage, no removable battery. 16GB fills up really quickly and streaming isn't always an option (think big games and satnav)
So other than the obvious tech spec differences for me the Note was the way forward.

thanks for your input
What most worries me is the warranty. Although I did not have any problem with s2 that would require RMA or servicing, is the N2 a sturdy device that doesn't develop faults along the way?

Choose Samsung Galaxy Note 2 because it has:
1. Great battery
2. Large/Amazing screen (reading books through Kindle or Kobo is just fantastic )
3. Removable battery
4. Micro SD slot
5. Project Butter (everything goes very smooth, no lag)
Plus, s-pen, good camera.

I've had 2 note 2's and haven't had a single issue in the months since owning.
I own both a note 2 & a nexus 4, I much prefer the note 2 and use it 95% of the time. It is a brilliant all rounder & don't think any other phone on the market presently beats it for looks or overall performance, IMO.
Get the note 2 you won't regret it at all

I will copy paste here...They are from recycle companies that buy mobiles, it is a bit risky but considering the phone has been on the market for only 4 months a grade c might be in reality grade b. There is also free returns 7 days policy.
What does Grade A mean?
• The phone is used but in excellent condition.
• Cosmetically the phone will show no signs of use, there will be no scratches,
cracks or scuffs to the screen or casing.
• It’s been fully tested*, is in full working order and has been restored to the latest operating system.
What does Grade B mean?
• The phone is used and in good condition.
• Cosmetically the phone will show signs of slight use, including two or three minor scratches to the screen and casing. It wont have cracks on the screen or casing.
• It’s been fully tested*, is in full working order and has been restored to the latest operating system.
What does Grade C mean?
• The phone is used and in average condition.
• Cosmetically the phone will show signs of use, including some scratches and
scuffs to the screen and casing. It wont have cracks on the screen or casing.
• It’s been fully tested*, is in full working order and has been restored to the latest operating system.
Ah in that case I'd settle for the Nexus 4 if i were you., the Note 2 is a great device with much more functionality but reality is there is nothing like getting a phone right out of the box Atleast in my case and that alone would be my deciding factor besides the fact that it uses pure android which Is a plus for me too.
I've had a lot of bad experiences with used phones in the past and since then I've always opted for brand new. However, if you do decide to get the Note2 then I can add that incase the housing is pretty bad, since you've mentioned it's a grade c, then you can easily replace the housing for as cheap as 10bucks from www.cnn.cn. Their products are of high quality standard and very cheap.
Sent from the rabbit hole.
Tough one really. It keeps bouncing in my head on and off... I know I can't buy anything better than these with 300£, it is basically a real upgrade mid contract with just a small cost. I also want to use it for more than one year this time.

Hi
You should take a look at Panamoz.com.
They specialise in camera lenses but offer really good prices on phones which are imported from Honk Kong and with 1 year warranty. You can get a new LTE S3 for just a bit more than a Nexus, etc.
I know people who have used the site and they all recommend it.
Okay disregard that.
It seems to have jumped up over £200!
Must have been a long discount they had over the holiday period when I last checked.
Note 2:
+/-big screen
+more storage
+bigger battery (but also higher energy consumption through display)
+SPEN extremly useful in combination with FreeNote at University | AND try out Swype, swiping is perfect for SPEN
Nexus 4:
+newest firmware
+feels noble/high quality (unibody and glass front + back)
+more custom ROMs
-storage
I would prefer the NII mainly beacause of the big screen with AMOLED technology. I tested both devices and felt in love with the NII.

THE Note 2 came yesterday. Unfortunately it is mint on the case, but has 3 scratched, visible with the screen off, visible on white background, one 1 inch long, and 2 small, and then there are 4 more small scratches, the ones that I don't mind....quite a good condition for a grade C, I would say others would sell this as very good condition.
I think I will try to exchange it with a C or chuck 15£ more for a B; Or shouldn't I? If i put a screen protector will it make me forget about those? Does a scratched screen weaken the gorilla glass 2?
Bad about it is that the back panel creacks and flexes making sounds.
Oh..and the titanium color is beautiful.
It is true how everybody said, at first I was shocked about the size of it, and felt intimadet a bit. I am quite tall, 6.3. my hands are regular size but I have very thin fingers, but after one day I am sold, I was ready to run for a s3 or n4 because of the size, but now it doesn't feel like that anymore. The money are well spent I think, could keep this for 2 years no doubt, only badpart is I need to buy an mp3 player for running.
Battery is a WOW factor, 20h 22m on battery (8 hours from the night losing 1%/hour) screen time 4h 39m and still got 29% left. A 1hour movie episode on bbc iplayer (wifi stream) took 9% of the battery!

Yea just get a good quality anti glare screen protector and it should hide the scratches well. I hope.you get to enjoy it the way it's meant to be.

hmm I don't see the competition here.
The ONLY reason you would choose N4 over Note 2 is you can't handle the screen size.
Like you want one hand operation at all time or you put your phone in your pants pocket but your pants are all has incredibly small pockets.
This is the only reason I can think of people would choose N4 over Note 2.
Other than this, I think Note 2 superior to N4 on every aspect.

Thanks, it was more about the budget. But as you can see, even a used note 2 is dearer than n4.

......and the price

Question Should I buy?

Hi Guys,
Never owned a fold or flip before and am very on the fence about buying the fold 4. I still have an s10+ which I love but am itching to pull that new phone trigger!
My main concerns are battery life and the crease.
I saw one at the shop today and the crease was more than noticeable, because of the screen protector that I've read shouldn't be removed, it was more like a bubbly mountain range running down the whole phone.
Also I like to play games like diablo immortal and would like more than an hour or 2 of play before the battery dies.
Should I buy or hold off for the s23 ultra? Anyone with hands on experience of the device would be appreciated.
If you have to ask probably not. Previews are saying battery life is excellent and crease very minor to "unnoticeable". For me it's about the fact I'm a heavy tablet user and am tired of having to travel with laptop, phone, and tablet. It's way overpriced for features, but when you think of it as basically like three phone screens, 512G or more, and 5G the price is reasonable.
I use an S-pen for litterally every time I use my note 20 Ultra.
It warns you when you forget to put the pen inside.
That is the only reason that I hesitate.
I also travel a lot and it would be a great replacement of the combi phone and tablet.
I am an old guy and typing/swiping with the pen is important for me.

Do you live close to a store that has a demo unit? That won't answer your battery life question so much but you can at least handle the device and see how you feel in-person about the crease. Most have said the crease is easier to see in videos.
Gaming on most mobile devices is tough on battery life. Really software optimization dependent. There are a few youtube videos out there that talk about performance of different games.

Not sure, don't have the phone yet. But my case from Samsung comes with an spen holder built in.
I do not think it will warn. Doesn't it double also as a stand, removing the pen holder?

Correct for the official Samsung case with S pen holder. You can swap the "part" depending on which one you want to use.
Yes, just for the Samsung dynamic lock screen wallpapers

Samsung has a S pen (dummy capacitance tip) and an S Pen PRO that is Bluetooth connected. While I wait like most of us to receive the phone, case and embedded S-Pen that comes with the case, I am 99% sure only the one with BT will have the warnings. Also, as annoying as it can be, the PRO pen may fit in the case, but will not charge in it (I think) and the charging case it comes with will not fit the Samsung case, as I do not see the sliding piece to allow it? Am I sure? Nope.. Did not get it yet, and did not order the PRO pen ($100 freaking bucks.. WTF?)
So, here is my impression from 48 hours with the phone, moving from an S20+. (first time on a FOLD)
Me in the first 3 hours: 'Oh boy, this was a stupid decision.. it is heavy, bulky , the pen sticks out (with the Samsung stand cover), It is too big to put in a car mount when open, the front cover screen is too small for my old eyes, I am an idiot falling for it'
Me on day 2 actually working with it: ' WOW best decision ever !' . I use the inner screen open where the pen case actually used as my stand, having the top at 45 degrees, and the bottom part as my handwriting area, I can handwrite (using Google keyboard) in several languages, it recognize my handwriting without training, It enhanced my productivity by 25% , it is not to hard to carry in the pocket when folded, I can mount it on my car both folded and open, It charges quicker than I expected wirelessly, and from my laptop when not at my desk, I don't need to open my laptop to review a document (7.6" are enough), I got used to the weight and the front cover is perfect to make calls and look at text messages.. I now leave the office without my laptop bag and do not need to carry a 20 LBS. one.. 263 grams are nothing !!!!!!! "
Does this answer the question if to buy or not?
