Help understanding phonebook!

First of all, hopefully people will forgive me for not putting this with the other person's issues with the phone book as mine are slilghtly different.
Basically, I'm not understanding what is going on in my phonebook. Previously I was thinking that my Desire was syncing with All Contacts. But that's not what it's doing. Well, at least not only what it's doing. These are some of the issues that I'm having and I can't explain.
When I tap People - Menu - View, is shows "Google (781)" with "show auto GMail contacts" unchecked. However I have 339 entries in my GMail account for My Contacts and 653 All Contacts. I don't understand the difference.
When I have an unknown number contact me, and I add them to a known contact, "Jo Bloggs" say, when typing in "j - o - ..." I can have up to 3 entried pop up of Jo Bloggs. But then when I go to my People's list, I only see one entry. And in my All Contacts list, I only have one entry.
When I go to add an unknown contact to a known contact, in the list that pops up of (I'm assuming) all my contacts, there are contacts there that I do not see in my People list. I have unchecked "show auto GMail contact" so what is happening?
Can anyone PLEASE explain some of this. I'm trying to clear up my phone book and remove these duplicates and dead weight that I can't always see. It's obviously not simply a problem of syncing All Contacts when you don't want to.
Has anyone noticed any strange behaviour in their People's list???

I also find the phone book confusing along with the texting

my last phone was the Sony Ericsson C 902

Did you sync with face book too? As that will added any contacts from their that have phone numbers.

Nope. Haven't synced any social networking site at all.
I like to try and get one set sorted at a time. I have another account synced up for the calendar (not contacts). However they share exactly the same contacts so that wouldn't account for the mess of some contacts having no links, some having up to 3 that aren't duplicates. Not that I can find where these contacts came from anyway!

Why dont you copy the numbers you have from your old phone to the SIM card, .. and then import those contacts from SIM card to the Desire (if thats possible). try this before syncing with Gmail and see how it works

sorry to hijack thread but when you have an incoming call and you have a photo attached is it quite blurry or clear?

My sim card, and I think the sim cards of many other people, does not support multiple entries under one name. Nor does it support the amount of contacts I have in my GMail. Actually, I don't even think it supports the amount of information that can be held in phone storage/online accounts (stuff like addresses, birthdays etc)

yeah i know, it has very limited functionality, .. but if you got a correct name and phone number in your phone book, than you can sync the rest from Gmail if am not mistaken, this might help in having multiple accounts and such

now this is odd. I'm finding that every test contact I put in the phone, is not getting updated online. More than that, when it syncs, it deletes the contact.
I just tried:
1a Testgeneralgoogle
1a Test
and a third one I can't remember.
They just seemed to replace the former, then get deleted altogether.
But when I added "1a Testonline" to my online account, it appears on my phone.
Am I really the only person who is having this behaviour on their phone??? Is it simply a setting I'm missing?
Can someone try to add a test contact on their phone and see if their GMail contacts are updated properly, please.
(P.S. I should mention that I updated the number of a contact from my Desire, which showed up online. Then I updated their birthday at a separate time which didn't show up online and was reset to the incorrect date I had online.)

I'm getting my phone next week and I have a couple of questions about the phonebook too:
1/ I listed all my current contacts in GMail. So when I enter my GMail address on the phone, will it add them right away?
2/ If I enter my Facebook details and want to browse Facebook pics through the photos app, is it also gonna import my FB contacts? (I don't want it to)

I'm getting somewhere with finding out about the syncing issues I'm having. At least a little step. I've just found out that if I create a contact on the phone, and put in a birthdate, it won't appear in my online contacts when the phone syncs and it will get deleted when the phone does update. If there is no birthday, it syncs fine.

I'm finding that businesses are 50:50 when it comes to syncing. Some businesses are even not in my onine account anywhere and yet they're on my phone. And I have no idea where they came from but they are businesses that I have stored their details in the past.
This is almost seeming like a GMail issue as the phone can't make up contacts that I coincidently have used before.
Again, people are welcome to try at least to change a birthday or sync a new contact with a birthday and share what happens. I'd like to go to HTC saying the sync is not working fully, and it's happening to more than just me. If it's true of course.

I also seem to have some trouble wrapping my head around the phonebook (it shouldn't be that difficult should it?) After having read around on the forums I went to my google account and spent a while typing in my contacts which have synced fine as far as I can see.
I've set it under People to show only gmail contacts (and not sim)...but when I hit the "Phone" on the homepage it still shows my sim contacts...any way in changing this to show only gmail contacts? I'm a bit OCD-ish when it comes to this stuff. I like everything nice and neat

Another aparent issue, I've just realised that I don't think there is a way to copy a phone contact to the synced (in my case Google) account. And on top of that, contacts that are sent via vcard, are sent to the phone. You don't seem to get an option.
But as always, I'm still trying to learn so I'm up for someone telling me I'm wrong.

anyone got an idea how to get rid of all the facebook contact/numbers that come up using phone function ? cuz i dont have in my contacts most of the people i have on facebook so its slightly annoying having to scroll through all of them

Yeah I've changed my "People" view to show only google contacts. Just weird that when I go to "Phone" all my sim contacts still show as well as the google ones. I want to keep my contacts on my sim...just want to hide them from view. Hmm more investigating required...

When you ad a new contact, you have to select "contact type" -> "Google" instead of "Phone", if you want the contact to be synchronized with you google contacts.

Argh! This is really annoying me now though -
I've updated my google account with all my contacts from my sim.
The on the phone have gone to People --> Menu --> View --> Google contacts
And that lets me just see my Google contacts in people view (great)
BUT when I hit "Phone" it shows both sim AND google contacts - is there an extra setting that I'm unaware of in the "Phone" section of the phone?
All my previous phones had an option to show only sim or only phone contacts but just can't find it on the Desire...I want to try and avoid deleting the contacts off my sim as I'd like to have a back up.
The only way I can see myself out of this is by exporting onto the memory card and then manually deleting all my sim contacts...which seems a bit of a long way round it. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Or indeed does anyone else have this same problem?
If it helps, I bought this from CPW PAYG and using my o2 simplicity sim in it.

Do yourself a favour,
Log into google on your pc, and go to contacts, and put ALL your contacts in there.
Then delete them off the phones sim.
It may sound long winded, but once you get the hang off everything being in the cloud, the phone works very well.
All my contacts now have pictures, birthdays, email address's etc on google.com.
And they all automatically appear in my phone, my calender syncs, all my contacts birthdays appear on my phones calender etc,

Yep I should just do that - just wanted to see if there were any other options before . I'm guessing that it works both ways - when i add contacts on my phone it'll sync with my google account and add them on there as well right?

Change contact location (SIM, Google, Phone) impossible ?

Is there any way to change the contact's "location" (SIM, Google, Phone) ?
I would like to get all my "Phone" contacts synchronized with Google, but i can' find any way how to change the setting from "Phone" to "Google".
I can't find any way to sync all the contacts (SIM+Google+Phone) with Google.
Is it a bug or do I missed somthing ?

that doesn't work, I've tried. There are a few threads here asking exactly the same question.
All we'd like is to be able to put all the contact links we have from google, facebook, phone, phone, phone and phone for one contact to go under one contact, hopefully, the google one, to include all the relevant info from all the places like facebook. I don't believe anyone has said how this can be done yet.

That's really not the same thing as what the OP was asking. Mind me asking why you want to change that, tho? It's only a horrifying mess in the edit contact screen, when viewing the contact I only see one entry (Name, phone, email, address, nickname, facebook profile).
Of course, when I hit edit I have
Google contact with phone, email
Google contact with another email
Google contact with phone, email, address, nickname
Facebook contact
It's all very derp.

I don't want to link all the contact accounts for one person (his twitter, phone, gmail accounts) together.
what i want is to move all the "Phone" contacts to "Google" contacts location.
Example: when I click on People->Menu->View, then i have
SIM 0
Google 41
Phone 123
contacts
I want to have 41+123= 164 Google contacts only.
because i want automatically backup contacts on Gmail (e.g. to be able to restore them after ROM flash)
When i click on individual contact, then i see "Phone" on the right upper corner of the contact screen. i want to see "google" there. But it's not editable. Its only linkable ...

When i restored my contacts using mybackup pro they all restored as google contacts as well as phone contacts, so then i just deleted all of my phone cntcts using a contact deleter app from the market.
Google contacts all the way!
The google contacts have the phone and facebook info combined so photo birthday and all that.

unfortunately my myBackup trial has allready expired.
but i have exported all "Phone" contacts to a *.vcf file, then deleted all contacts and finally imported them from *.vcf into "Google" contacts.
hopefully it will not mess up after synchronization with google (which is running in this moment)

I recently kinda done this, I just exported all contacts, and then imported multiple rather than one or all, and when you import it asked you where you wish to save them, Gmail, phone or sim, This is the ONLY way I can see about doing this

It's probably the only way to do this and it worked for me.

The "Myself" entry in my contacts has tons (could be around 20) links to the same google account (which is the only google account on the phone). This, appart from being unnecessary, slows editing the entry down to almost force-closing. Does anyone have an idea how to remove the duplicates?
Stock xperia 4.4 contacts app, in case it matters... Will gladly provide more details if you tell me what you need to know

You can merge contacts through your browser and google.com/contacts. Or you can download an app in the play store to merge the contacts (like Contact+) Personally, I prefer the former as it gives me more options to select the difference between multiple duplicate contacts and either discard or merge them. Or you can merge them in bulk without checking.

I'm sorry, but you seem to have misunderstood my situation. This is not multiplie contacts, but multiple associated google accounts to the same contact:
In the contacts, there's the "Myself" entry. This looks normal on first sight, but when I go to edit it, there's one tab with the contacs information that is stored on the phone, and then there is tabs with the gmail address. The problem is that there's not one, but (I recounted) more like a hundred of them, all with the same info (mail address and name). There's a button to "Unlink contact", but apparently there being so many of them, using the button and clicking "Done" is too much work for the contacts app (not responding, I gave up after "wait"ing four times).
Going through google.com/contacts does not help, as I have moved all contacts to phone storage.
Contacts Optimizer does not detect the duplicate tabs, probably because they're not seperate contacts.
I will try contacts+ as per your reccomendation, though.
EDIT: nope, contacts+ dos not even display the "Myself" entry, so no chance to edit it through that one.

I'm not sure if you have already solved your problem or not, but if you haven't, clearing the data of Contacts Storage (Settings->Apps->All->Contacts Storage->Clear Data) did the trick for me.
However, if you have any other contacts that aren't linked to your Google Account, please remember to back up your contacts first! (I think the links wouldn't be backed up so your problem should not come back)
I am also using Xperia Z1 Compact. I had the same problem as well and I have been searching around until I found this thread...didn't think I'd run into someone who has exactly the same problem, not to mention the same phone model!
I hope this solves your problem, if you haven't figured this out yet, of course.

[QUESTION] Contacts won't showing others networks

Hello.
Just got this phone 2 days ago. Already updated it to Pie, first Android One I have.
I noticied Contacts is not showing information about other apps inside contacts details, like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.
In a "normal situation", when you open a contact, these information will be present bellow contact details, but for me isn't showing.
Is Android One this way, or I'm missing something?

Android one is not miui.
Contacts is a standard Google app. If works the same on any phone.
If you don't like it, you can find alternatives in the store.
I just checked and I could add various "IM" accounts to a contact, and they showed up when viewing the contact...

I know we don't have miui here. Isn't the point.
My own profile is showing with all information bellow my phone numbers, but all other contacts don't.
I noticied when I SEARCH for a contact inside app, it shows 2 or more duplicates, and the information is there. So, maybe is a merging problem, but all my contacts is correctly merged!

As far as I know, Facebook, Messenger, or Instagram contacts can no longer be sync automatically with any contact app (due to facebook policy)(unless your phone is rooted)
Whatsapp contacts should be automatically sync, but sometimes they doesn't appear or appears as duplicates.
The solution for me was to use Merge + app which "really" merges contacts so that Whatsapp informations appears in contacts details without duplicates
I don't know about other IM apps...

Automatically Contacts Saving into Contacts

Hello All,
I am frustrated with automatically contacts adding without name into my device contact.
For example I have John Doe contact saved already then same contact number will be saved without name automatically, and those contacts appearing into whatsapp and other apps and I cannot recognize the contact untill I remove it. I have disabled contact sync from all the accounts.
Some contacts I have deleted many times but they are added again and again.
Anybody else is facing this issue?

Never heard of that. Try changing which contacts to display in Settings. Also you could edit your contacts the way you want it (delete duplicates), save them on the phone as .vcf, clear storage/cache of Settings and import the saved file. I always save my contacts on the phone, not on Google and from time to time back them up to vcf.

Did you use 'Google' contacts? Or some apps have access contacts that syncs automatically (i.e. Telegram syncs my contacts sometimes without permission, and I''m wondering my contacts are gone, sometimes duplicated )
Sometimes, it happens here, syncing contacts even when syncing turned off. I revoke 'contacts' permission on most apps (Telegram, Instagram, Messenger, etc.), not using Google's contact apps (I dunno if it's the default contacts app on stock, as I don't use stock) and that problem went away.

I did it many times but again everything messed up automatically. The same contact already available in phone memory and duplicate created with empty name and this duplicate contact act as default contact for every application. it happens only with around 50 contacts out of 200.

I use Google contacts, MI A2 lite comes with stock Android 9 and stock Google apps. Let me try to revoke the contact permissions from all the apps.
