Newbie Rom/root question - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm new to this and just kind of messing around with it. Are there any good Android no pie roms or all Oreo? Any suggestions overall?

I believe most all the P2XL roms under current development are 9.0. However, you could always browse AFH for older Oreo roms if that's your cup-o-tea

All coming out now are pie. Make sure you pay attention the the vendor/boot/update version (last Google update). Havoc is solid with some pretty constant updates. If you follow that Dev you can't really go wrong.
Good luck.

Those are factory images from Google, not a simple build from AOSP source.

I thought the Google factory images were snapshot builds off of their own AOSP source. Am I wrong there?

It was a joke. I guess I don't really see the point of what you're asking for.
If you wanted a no-frills experience, why not go stock? Stock doesn't = bad, it just means untweaked, which is what AOSP would be.
If you wanted AOSP with tweaks and improvements, why not go with a more popular ROM? There are plenty of AOSP-based ROMs here on the forums, a lot of which have some nice improvements.
I'm using stock OREO right now, until PureNexus releases their Oreo flavor, and then I'll switch back.

@CreateYourDream: I'm happy with ABC. AOSP plus a few usefull extra's. Without GCrap. Fast, stable, long SOT.
...and the new October-build
Just got this phone and followed the guide to get TWRP and SuperSU loaded. the factory Nougat is prompting me to take the Oreo OTA update.
I'm fine with the stock oreo, so long as I can still keep the bootloader unlocked, TWRP in place, and root.
All possible?
I'll go with some popular 8.0 a little later when everything settles down.
TIA

Favorite ROM?

Okay so I get my pixel XL tomorrow finally after being stuck with a s7 edge with a locked bootloader for a long time now and I was wondering what everyone's favorite rom was. So tell me what your favorite rom is and why you like it the best, or even if you prefer stock android with root. So far I am leaning towards installing paranoid android. Also if you want to you can give me some tips and tricks, I have not messed with a device with an unlocked bootloader in a couple years so. One last thing too, are the devs making oreo roms for the pixel xl or has everyone moved onto new devices already?
Stock Android
If your device ships with 7.1.2 you can stay on that and have a few rom choices. Go to 8.0 you have twrp and root but no real rom choices. 8.1 gives even fewer choices.
Stock Oreo 8.0 and root seems good enough.
This guide can be helpful.

8.1 Dev preview with root. Great battery and stable. At least for me. Can't go wrong with Paranoid Android 7.1.2 based ROM either. You'll have to look up how to do either
I used Pure Nexus and it was fantastic, but now I'm on stock 8.0 with root and that's good too. I miss a few customization options from PN, but I can wait for it to be updated to Oreo.

Can this guide be use for Dev Prev v8.1?
Especially TWRP and Magisk?
Paranoid Android has a lot of really cool and unique features. I'm on stock though until they release an Oreo release.

There's a different thread for rooting 8.1 using magisk. Thing it uses stock recovery.
Do you think the devs are working on updating paranoid and pure nexus to 8.0 or have they moved onto something new? Right now I'm just running 8.1 with twrp and root. The battery life is unbelievable.

Pixel phones? They are a different beast...

what's with the lack of custom roms?

The Moto z play had plenty of developers dedicated to it but this has practically nothing. Is there a reason for that or did no developers buy this phone?

They're out there, google 'nash' roms and you should be able to find them. Some don't get posted here per XDA's request, the developer's, and/or both? Not sure what which is the case, but they're out there. I think they might be gearing more for treble and pie which isn't official on either side for us at the moment. With an official pie update in the future I'm sure some are hoping that'll fix some annoyances that have not been completely ironed out on the stock and custom side.

If you do a google search, there is not that many for this device.. The roms that are available can be found here on XDA, (not many). Only other one I know of is Dirty Unicorn, which I have ran already for a while..

Mokee is the only other one I could find. LOS 16 on Android file host runs really nice but it stopped getting updated around the end of September.

Official LineageOS is treble enabled. Flash it, let it boot once, wipe data and flash the GSI of your choice.

Good to know, thanks.

Which ROM ?

Coming from stock 7.0 and November 2017 security patch what ROM would you recommend that in the words of Apple fans 'just works' ?
Is lineage 15.1 still the best option .. .. Am I right in thinking it no longer gets updated ? Is that because all the bugs have been ironed out or because developers have moved onto Pie ?
Are there any negatives I should be aware of. ?
I've used Lineage before, it has given my old Samsung tablet a new lease of life.
Search didn't bring up any results newer than august 2018.
Thanks
You should read the threads and what people think about the ROMs. There are some really good devs out there doing great jobs, but to give you a wrap up would be to much here. I run on Resurrection Remix and am pretty happy, everything works as I need it.
I think best rom is ResurrectionRemix and bootleggers. Those are perfect rom. I use rr but i want to flash bootleggers. But if we can give pie lineageos it will be perfect.
Im cr droid user best rom ever:good:
And LineageOS if you want a basic ROM with quite good battery. I get three days out of mine - not stock levels but close enough for Oreo

A quick read of the RR thread and the last post says development has ended and I quote "Even though I wasn't able to fix many issues I've learnt quite a lot of things."
Well, that puts me off straight away.......many issues ?

I wasnt see problem. His probably write the wrong discussion.
Every os has its ups and downs. Try evrythng and see what works best for u. U might be a battery person or a guy who like customisation or outright performance. Or u just want something stable and light. I would suggest try lineage 16, aosp 6, rr 7 and Crdroid 5.2. One of these should satisfy you.

Given this is my 1 and only phone and I also run a business off it I'm not looking to experiment with different roms.
I just want one that will work as well as stock.....including battery life.......but hopefully have more recent security patches.
I've heard android 9 sucks the life out of batteries so that would mean lineage 16 would not be suitable I guess.

Who told u that
Coz, AFA many users of P2 are concerned, including me, having the best battery out here. If you want to experience try Crdroid, its having so far pretty good SOT and with less or almost no bugs, which can prevent it from becoming a daily driver. :fingers-crossed:

My suggestion would be to go through phases of upgrading;
Install a treble enabled TWRP that should be available in LOS 15 page.
Install LOS 15 for updating treble A only partition (check the whole process for that in LOS 15 page)
Then, install RR 7 of 3rd April for updating vendor partition to latest security patch (later versions have bugs)
Now, you are in a position to have a ROM of your choice, if you want a up-to-date ROM without many issues and minimal customization then opt for LOS 16 or Mokee Pie. If you want plenty of customization with stability then go for CrDroid Pie. If you want a ROM which is up-to-date and have plenty of customization then look for AEX Pie or Havoc 2.4 (13th April version as later versions of Havoc 2.4 are buggy). For rooting, you can use Magisk 19.0 without issues whereas, nano gApps work fine.
You will have to go through all this cycle before resorting to a ROM of your choice. However, when securing lock screen with fingerprint; don't opt for encrypting phone at start. Just select "NO" when asked otherwise phone camera and torch won't work.

Question Best stable pixel lookalike ROM for OP9p

Hi guys! I've been last 4 years on IPhone, then, I decided to come back to the amazing android world, but I became a super noob.
I bought Op9pro with the intention of flashing immediately an android 12 pixel rom, but I confess that I'm a little bit confused.
Is it right? We only have StagOs and PA? Because I see that these two are still in initial phases, with a few problems.
Do you recommend which android 12 pure rom to use as my daily driver with no worries ?
Thanks in advance!

Bro, should not have bought the 9pro then. I also would've bought the 9 pro if it had a stable Pixel Experience ROM maintainer, but it doesn't.
Any similar?
EvoX.. Kinda..maybe..theyre working in A12 release in upcoming days it sounds.
Other options
PA
LineageOS
StagOS
I'm happily anticipating EvoX A12
