Favorite ROM? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Okay so I get my pixel XL tomorrow finally after being stuck with a s7 edge with a locked bootloader for a long time now and I was wondering what everyone's favorite rom was. So tell me what your favorite rom is and why you like it the best, or even if you prefer stock android with root. So far I am leaning towards installing paranoid android. Also if you want to you can give me some tips and tricks, I have not messed with a device with an unlocked bootloader in a couple years so. One last thing too, are the devs making oreo roms for the pixel xl or has everyone moved onto new devices already?

Stock Android

If your device ships with 7.1.2 you can stay on that and have a few rom choices. Go to 8.0 you have twrp and root but no real rom choices. 8.1 gives even fewer choices.
Stock Oreo 8.0 and root seems good enough.
This guide can be helpful.

8.1 Dev preview with root. Great battery and stable. At least for me. Can't go wrong with Paranoid Android 7.1.2 based ROM either. You'll have to look up how to do either

I used Pure Nexus and it was fantastic, but now I'm on stock 8.0 with root and that's good too. I miss a few customization options from PN, but I can wait for it to be updated to Oreo.

Can this guide be use for Dev Prev v8.1?
Especially TWRP and Magisk?

Paranoid Android has a lot of really cool and unique features. I'm on stock though until they release an Oreo release.

There's a different thread for rooting 8.1 using magisk. Thing it uses stock recovery.

Do you think the devs are working on updating paranoid and pure nexus to 8.0 or have they moved onto something new? Right now I'm just running 8.1 with twrp and root. The battery life is unbelievable.

About to recieve a OnePlus 3. Anything I should need to know?

I bought this device today.
I got it because I wanted to get into custom ROMs/Root.
Is there anything I need to know about this phone that will be helpful? Tips & Tricks?
Also I hear talk of Lineage OS vs Oxygen. Which is better and why? (Please don't be LINEAGE OF COURSE FTW, I want reasons. Couldn't find that anywhere)
Should I chose Oxygen beta 8.0, or the Lineage beta for 8.0?
Coming from an LG V10 (AT&T) where I couldn't modify it for ****, and broke after a little over a year (LG Bootloop issue)

The ROM you want to use can only be your decision based on what features you want for example if you want loads of tweaking features then I'd suggest resurrection remix and for the very latest android version then oxygen OS or lineage 8.0 both are good in their own ways you'd have to check the description to see which suits your needs , one big tip I can give you though is to always use the latest blu_spark recovery because its been modified to support a variety of ROMs and if your a flashaholic like me then always perform a nandroid backup before switching ROMs its simple advice but can save you loads of time if you don't like the ROM you've chosen and obviously before trying to unlock the bootloader via adb then enable developer options and enable OEM unlocking (some people forget) good luck and enjoy this wicked phone...

Ah ok thanks for that blu_spark bit, I was just gonna stick with stock kernel, but now I am seeing the benefits of custom ones.

Xceeder was talking about recovery, not kernel. Since this phone is new for you, certain idiosyncrasies of this phone must be learnt. One of them is the recovery. Ofcourse official TWRP is there but it will not work with many custom ROMs. One of the best recoveries for this phone is made by bluspark who is well-known for his kernels. It is that recovery which Xceeder was talking about. I also use the same.
As regards ROMs, apart from what Xceeder stated, if you are satisfied with a smooth and battery friendly ROM, I can recommend VertexOS. But it will not have any bells or whistles. Another battery friendly and smooth ROM with some tweaks built-in is PureFusion. Both these I have used. But if you need many tweaks, go with Xceeder's recommendations. As he said, ROMs are a personal choice and what I like, you may not. So read about a few, flash a few and finalise.
Advance wishes for a happy experience.

Ah ok only reason I said kernel was because [kernel] was the first thing that came up when I typed in blu_spark.

Quick question about unlocking and rooting.

Besides a few apps, why root the 5T? I have rooted every phone I have ever had, but the 5T has most of what I want.
That being said, I am a flashaholic and am having withdrawals. If I do root and flash a custom rom, is EVERYTHING working or are there still issues being worked on?
thanks for any insight.
Same here. There are a few things I would like by rooting but I don't want to loss some things that only cone with oxygen os. Like the super quick face unlock. Hopefully Oreo comes out soon.

I am the same sometimes. I got stock and I am happy for a few weeks but then watching development threads I start to get withdrawals and have to root and ROM again, then I go back to stock and on and on.
LiquidRemix is pretty solid and the main ROM I flash from time to time. Everything works on the latest official builds and the battery is insanely good. The camera suffers from time to time but that is expected as the code/drivers are not openly available. Other than that LR is amazing with excellent dev work and support.

Is there a Custom ROM for Huawei 7X/Mate SE?

Would like to use a clean version of Android instead of the EMUI version that is loaded on all their phones.
Seeing how these phones are identical, figured what would work for one would work with the other.
Thanks for giving me any insight.
Coming from the Galaxy Note 4 - hoping I'm not making a mistake with this phone that is enroute.

Guess you haven't bothered looking at the ROMs and development section. While alot of ROMs are not what I would deem "daily material", their is working going on to get ROMs on this device.

Here is a list of supported custom ROMs on Mate SE, Choose the A only ROM.

The whole custom ROM world has changed, Now you need to apply system.img instead of rom.zip using fastboot command.
I have the PHH-Treble installed on my Huawei Mate SE. here is the link.

In addition, I'd check out the Open Kirin site. I've read the Lineage version is outstanding and well tuned for the chip. They list the 7x as supported but I've read the Mate SE most certainly is also.

Coincidentally, just booted that ROM (on my SE) today. It's very very good, noticed a few minor glitches to do with the camera and navigation (will let them know about em).
I'll admit though, emui8 is growing on me It's certainly better than 5.1 was. Love to see the roms becoming available though. No doubt when updates stop (or before), they will be critical to have.

I don't mind emui except that the power-saver regularly kills tasker, ad-blocking vpns, etc. I've tried everything to exempt them from power saving but no go. The battery life is outstanding though (I usually only lose 15% after a full day's usage), so for average users it's a bonus.

Nothing terribly serious. I didn't use it for long, but the camera option for selfie shutter 'palm to camera' didn't work. Also the recently taken shots didn't show in the bottom gallery (I read this is fixed now). And the navigation arrows at the bottom seemed to not be persistent somehow (after a reboot this was okay).
It's easy to go back to stock, except if you haven't backed everything up, have to reconfigure, add / subtract apps etc.
I'd suggest searching for the openKirin website, they seem to be doing the most development. Also follow their directions, they worked for me and pretty easy.
Hi
How does one flash the "Openkirin_los_beta4" Iso to the Mate SE (BND-L34)? TWRP?? Fastboot??? what are the exact steps to not render it a paper weight again lol; Do you need Magisk-v16.0 to root it as well?

No, you don't need a custom bootloader.
You only need unlocked bootloader and unlocked frp.
TWRP is not supported on OpenKirin ROMs (especially on 7x twrp won't work).
You just need to flash the .img file through bootloader and then reboot to recovery and do a factory data reset.
Can anyone give me some advice: I have the Mate SE, currently on EMUI 8.0.0.332 (security update available but not installed), with TWRP and Magisk. I would love to install a custom ROM, but the OpenKirin site says TWRP isn't supported. Can I still install one of those builds and just expect no support if something goes wrong, or should I find some way to return to full stock before flashing? And if I need stock recovery, where can I find a download for it? I haven't had any luck on searching here yet.

Pretty much any GSI works so long as you have updated to EMUI 8 sometime in the past.

Newbie Rom/root question

I'm new to this and just kind of messing around with it. Are there any good Android no pie roms or all Oreo? Any suggestions overall?

I believe most all the P2XL roms under current development are 9.0. However, you could always browse AFH for older Oreo roms if that's your cup-o-tea
All coming out now are pie. Make sure you pay attention the the vendor/boot/update version (last Google update). Havoc is solid with some pretty constant updates. If you follow that Dev you can't really go wrong.
Good luck.

Question Best stable pixel lookalike ROM for OP9p

Hi guys! I've been last 4 years on IPhone, then, I decided to come back to the amazing android world, but I became a super noob.
I bought Op9pro with the intention of flashing immediately an android 12 pixel rom, but I confess that I'm a little bit confused.
Is it right? We only have StagOs and PA? Because I see that these two are still in initial phases, with a few problems.
Do you recommend which android 12 pure rom to use as my daily driver with no worries ?
Thanks in advance!
