Another Newbie Question here.
So AT&T only provides the 16MB Note 2, so of course we add a nice juicy 64GB SD card. But it seems that the stock phone does not really use it for much (that I can tell) to store anything.
First question: On the stock ROM, what apps can be told to use the SD card as default, and how do you change the app settings?
Second Question, for the future: Assuming one Root's the Note 2, what can be safely moved to the SD and how? Or is another ROM required?

I also have a 64gb card. I put all of my Titanium backups and Nandroids on the external SD (right now TWRP doesn't work with the exfat formatting of my card, so if I want to restore I'll have to move it from ext to int SD).
I also have Spotify set to store any offline music on the external SD. You can do this by installing an old version of Spotify, pointing it to external SD, then updating the app. A quick Google search will find this if it's something you want to do.
It's hard to tell you what to move to the external card without knowing what apps you use. You can get an app called Directory Bind that will point any internal SD location to your external SD. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889550

New to external SD use on Android as well (or any phone, that is). I have a 64GB sandisk as well, and It was pre-formatted for Android apparently with some s/w on it. Which is fine, if that is the way I should go.
Just playing around with it at first and copied a music album over, in similar format to my iTunes directory structure -I figured, why not. Perhaps there is a better way to structure my directories though? More general way for all apps to recognize? Moot point?
I assume different apps might require different directory structures...to be efficient, or to be able to work with those dirs/files. I'd rather have the most optimal structure now, before I start messing with creating more directories, etc down the road.
The general questions are, should I format this as something else? What is best to use? (Still looking into different file manager/transfer apps for now, and MAY root and keep stock ROM in the future, but acclimating myself with Android OS has been more than enough for now...I do enough Linux at work, so not in any rush )

Wanted to report back that I tried a simple case of using Directory Bind for something non-critical as a test. Used it to remount Titaniumn Backup to the external SD. Yes, I know you can just point it there. Just wanted to test Directory Bind.
It seemed to work until I rebooted the phone. Then it lost all the binding even tough I had checked off to save it for reboot and saved the binds to a file. So just beware that if you were using Directory Bind for something critical - you might have to recover the phone! I removed the package for now.

If your'e just talking about music, you can put it in any folder and any structure you'd like. The Android Media Server process scans your entire SD card for media (including music) except for folders with a ".nomedia" file in them. It will use the tags to identify the artist, song, and album, then sort them based on that information.

don't bother moving any apps to the external sd, since you have TONS OF ROOM in your internal memory on this phone..On the original note, I had over 300 apps installed on the internal, and still had over 5 gigs of room left..
just keep your music, movies, pictures, and other space hogs on it..trust me, leaving apps alone will never be a problem when you have a phone with this much storage space!

11GB is a lot (available to start with on the ATT model) if you use the external for media (and app cache) and leave the internal for apps mainly...agreed.
Most apps are small in size...however, one app like NOVA3 is 2GB and that is a big bite of your 11GB available, so that is a little concerning
I haven't had the device or android long enough to know, but, are app databases and cache allowed to reside on the external card --in lue of the ability to move apps to the SD being taken away since Jelly Bean (was it at that update)? Can someone point to a good thread on the reason and discussion about that? Thanks.

You can make your external your main storage device by using this root technique. But some people don't advise it saying it slows down your processing on apps.

Note II is a Unified Storage device. It has 11gb available for both user content (pictures, movie, music etc) and apps. I lost 2gb of space moving from my S2 to the N2.
S2 is not a Unified storage device, so it has 11gb of storage available for user content and a separate Apps partition of 2gb.
Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.

I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

Thanks guys! Looks like using these two combined I can get exactly what I wanted. I'll use link2SD to put apps on the SD card and Foldermount to move the other folders I want moved.

Can you let me know if this works for you? I can't get mine to read or write my SD card at all! I can't even move a picture from my Box cloud account to the SD card. Are you experiencing this? Or did I get a bad unit?

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

Probably... That sounds like a device issue not card.
How are the cards formatted?
The ROM you are using may not support the format.

I'm not sure I just put the card in my computer and clicked format SD card. I'm not rooted or running any special ROM, it's completely stock out've the box.
Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

Thanks for the tip, this makes me feel a little better about my purchase, I'll give it a try. I'm also thinking of buying a 64gb San Disk card and hopefully it will just work with a brand new one.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.
I know there are many devices out there which don't allow this, but is there a workaround to get this working on my LG G Pad 8.3?
My device is rooted.
16gb is just not enough memory these days to have all the apps and games you want on the device at the same time. i have a 64gb external card and would love to use this space for app data.
I know there is a workaround where you can move the data you need to the external card and move it back when you want to use the app but in this day and age it seems ridiculous to have to do that!
any help would be greatly appreciated

ok, I just installed that.
It shows NFS Most Wanted (for example) as movable. When I click "move to sd card" i get the message "App2SD is not supported by your device. Because your device has a primary external storage whcih is emulated from the internal storage. You can link the app in order to move its files to your sd card."
so i click ok to that, go back to my list of apps, long press on the app and click "create link" and it gives me the following message "secondary partition not found. make sure you have 2 partitions on your sd card and both are primary"
...now i dont know what to do...sorry

I had to format my SD card using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition. I tried making the 2nd primary partition EXT2 format and it didn't work. I ended up having to use FAT32 format instead. Here's the guide I used:

ok, looks like I am gonna have to find some spare time to do this.
Not sure why anyone would want to restrict you to use Internal memory only on their device as it only makes it worth less....
Will this change naturally when an official 4.4.2 is released for this device?

I have no idea. From what I hear, apps won't perform quite as good if they're on the external storage. If that's the case, they may be afraid that it will ruin the user experience. I just put apps that don't demand a ton of performance on my SD card so I can't verify if that's true.
But I like choices, so I wish they'd make it easier with a notice that performance may suffer or something. Also, Google is behind Android, and they want you storing data in the cloud, not on your device. That's why none of the Nexus devices have external storage.

well storing data in the cloud is fine as long as its not data thats needed to run apps. one step forward 2 steps back!
this device is perfect (and IMO the best in its size at the moment) apart from 2 things
1) this sd issue right here
2) they should have given it an AMOLED screed instead of LCD

ok, I found some time to sit down and do this, but before I got started I had a quick read of the instructions.
Am I correct in saying that the maximum I can make this partition to install apps on is 2gb? If that is the case then its not even worth doing as my card is 64gb...
......Ooooor is it the case that the 1st partition has to be 2gb but i can use the rest of the card to install apps??

i am referring to the link you gave me. the instructions state not to make the partition larger than 2gb.
FolderMount is more what you want. It does not require a special format, and it moves the data which is what really takes up the space. For example Bards Tale has over 3.5GB of data, and it moves ALL of that. The applications themselves hardly take up any space. It even survives rom updates like updating CM11 nightlies for example. I uninstalled Link2SD. It didn't move much, and caused problems when I did ROM updates.

Tried, tested and confirm working on my V500 with NFS Most Wanted!!
One thing i noticed though is that the program "Disk Usage" still picks it up as data on device even though it is not there. Used SD card analyst in ES File explorer with root permissions and data is not on device.
This is fantastic!! i now have a potential 64gb of space!!

That seems to be for the international version of the galaxy s3 only. I've only read through the first few pages but he OP seems to be willing to help with other devices if you test for him. Post over there and see what he has to say. This has been an issue for a very long time and has been made even worse with the new restrictions permitting only gapps and some manufacturer apps write access to the sd cards that we purchased. At least there's a fairly easy way around the write problem, but installing to external sd is another matter altogether.
Might want to take a look at Xposed Framework. I think I saw a module in there to accomplish this. Root required.

I've looked for a solution to this question since I got the 8.4 a few weeks ago. To my knowledge nothing is available. With my Note 2 I used to use an app (root required) called GL to SD. It's still on the Play store, but it's just too inconsistent to rely upon. When it works, it's a great app but it just doesn't do so consistently.

Seems same problem as s duos! I wouldn't try this if I were you! I hate Samsung sometimes due to this reason... Try recovery script method... But this slows down your device.....
You can use an App like Foldermount (root) to trick folders location.
So your OBB or Android data directories can be mounted to the ext SD card.
From then, anything installed will be on the SDcard.

What I hate is that these settings have to be done everytime your phone is restarted! I really hate this...
Guys what about an app that is installed on the device memory but trying to download a zip file to external sd? I am using gmt subtitles app... any way around this or do I need to gain the root access... and install the sd fix from play store? Cheers

Hi, my name is Julian, I am a newbie and I've got two big problems with the Galaxy J5(I think 2016) with 8GB internal and a 32GB SD Card, Stock Gapps and Lineage Os:
Internal Storage Issue
The Phone constantly says “Not enough Storage”, although there are NO extra Apps installed, except Whatsapp, and he has no personal Data(Images, movies, etc....)
BUT when I look in the Storage option in the Settings, the Calculation is not correct. It says : 3Gb for Android, 1,5GB for Apps and maybe 0,5Gb for Data, but the rest is not showing up.
SD Card to Internal Issue
So because of the 1. Issue, we decided to format the SD Card as an internal Storage. We searched up where this Option is to find and then we tried it. During the process it told us that we would free up about 2Gb of the Internal when moving stuff to the new formatted SD, so we did it, but after all There is no Extra Storage, and we are still not able to install apps from Google Play to the SD Card.(And it also says that 16GB of the SD Card are for the Android System, even if there are only 2 small Files or so).
I would be really thankful if you could try to fix our problems, because we can't go back to Stock because the Backup was broken and the copy from the PC doesn't even show up in TWRP(nor with the Backup function, neither with the File explorer function).

I don't have this device but, since there's no Official LineageOS released and, your not sure which J5 you have, here's the only Unofficial LineageOS 14.1 that's currently active that's specific to the J5 (2015).

During the process it told us that we would free up about 2Gb of the Internal when moving stuff to the new formatted SD, so we did it, but after all There is no Extra Storage, and we are still not able to install apps from Google Play to the SD Card.(And it also says that 16GB of the SD Card are for the Android System, even if there are only 2 small Files or so).
I would be really thankful if you could try to fix our problems, because we can't go back to Stock because the Backup was broken and the copy from the PC doesn't even show up in TWRP(nor with the Backup function, neither with the File explorer function).

Storage is a general problem. Not device specific.
It is no good idea to use stock GApps. A minimal gapps is enough. You can install Google apps from play store.
WhatsApp doesn't use adapted storage AFAIK. Especially videos use much memory. Delete them all.

Actually the Data is not using up the Space.

First, I want to thank you for replying, but I don't fell like this Problem is caused on this Phone only. Any other Ideas how I can fix this?

Your device is not supported by lineage os team.I would recommend you to use the stock rom.

I woulf like to do that, but when I want to restore to my Backup of the Stock Os the Backup doesn't show up. (I moved it from the PC to the phone)
