Additional Blocking Options In Google Phone - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I've noticed, depending on the ROM, additional options for blocking calls in the Google Phone app. I used the same beta version on AOSPex as with DU but the additional features are only available on the one. Anyone know anything about these discrepancies?
The additional blocking options are being able to block Private, Payphone and Unknown numbers........ something like that.
It's very handy.
Any ideas???

[APP] Root Call Blocker - need some feedback please

Hi guys, Im the dev of Root Call Blocker, a powerful blocking solution. There have been a few reports of people experiencing issues with the data connection on the S3, which i dont have.
Could someone please let me know if this is indeed the case?
If you do find an issue please follow this procedure:
- as soon as you spot the radio without a data connection (not after a call) send logs through the "Write to us" item in Settings
- once youve sent the report, try using the Debugging tools found in settings
- if the tools do not help, please send another report - this will still help me track issues
Thanks in advance, PR after the break

The only other option is Call Master, which we also make and also costs that amount. Every few weeks we have sales, so youre welcome to wait.
IT DOES NOT DO THE SAME THING AS MR NUMBER.

I have a question:
When I am on a call, and a call comes in that is on my Blacklist, will that incoming call be Blocked without disconnecting my existing call?
All other Blocking apps disconnect my existing call, including 'Ditched' Callers with Youmail
I already purchased your app, and would just like to know this, as this situation doesn't come up often.
Although me and the developer has had our differences.....I have to say root call blocker and call master even more so are the best call blocking apps in existence for android phones. Only real issues may be data/signal loss on occasion. I'm running the FreeGs3 ROM with the jellybomb theme...I have experienced data loss on occasion...I will try to send the logs as soon as it happens.
ftgg99,
I wanted to know if I may make a request. On call master I have all my blocked numbers within the app itself under a list. When one of the numbers or sms are captured by Call Master it does not give the name of the blocked caller....just the number. Is there any way to associate the names with the blocked calls. It works fine when the numbers are within the stock contacts list but not when the numbers are only within the app.
Also, when adding contacts to the built-in block list, is there anyway to have the list auto sort by name....similar to the stock contacts list?
Yes.

For you its differences, for me - policy.
Welcome back. Youre no longer in my list.
Are you saying that contacts you creted throught e app (ie - add/number/name) are not being shown as names in the internal logs? Because they are for me...
What is "stock" for you?

Thank you sir....its good to be off punishment...lol.
You are correct....all my contacts have been manually entered (ie - add/number/name) and are not being shown as names.....they just show as numbers in the internal logs. So when a blocked text or call is logged I have to go inside my list to search thru numbers to see which name matches the blocked number.
Also, when adding new entries to the internal contact list it just puts new entries at the bottom of the list as opposed to auto sorting the list in alphabetical order. I was hoping you could add auto sort feature.
Stock means when I used to have my lists just reference a contact group from my phone the internal log always attached a name with the number.
I prefer to use the manual internal contact list because it is more private.

Currently the mms from block contacts still stay in native sms app....they do not get blocked. however i still want the mms messages from the people in the blocked list...i just dont want them discovered. hopefully this feature will be fixed and include the option to save mms as well as block.
also it would be nice to have an auto sort feature when using the in app contact list. when i add a name and number to the cm internal contact list....the entry goes to the bottom of the list instead of being automatically sorted alphabetically. once the number of entries gets long it becomes difficult to find names when not in alphabetical order.
sms sometimes leaves a blank message in the external sms app with the name of the last person i sent a message from in my in app contact list. or sometimes if i am going back and forth between messaging someone in my block list and someone who is in my normal contact list....the message to the blocked person will sometimes have both contacts in the 'send to' instead of just the blocked one. Both of these issues definitely compromise the privacy.

[Q] Interest in a security / privacy focused ROM?

Hello and good day,
I haven't found any approach in this and ask this to everybody here around. Is there any interest in a security / privacy focused ROM that has the following features:
internet traffic through TOR
GPG / PGP KeyChain with Apps that support GPG / PGP
no apps that are calling home in any way
no facebook integration (but still possible to use facebook chat with OTR encryption)
without google play (add on possible) and focused on free software
possibillity to encrypt the whole phone OR specific folders
possibility to encrypt SMS text messages
Skype / WhatsApp / ICQ..... alternatives with encrypted OTR chat possibilities
video calling alternative based on XMPP or SIP (instead of skype and general video calls)
The apps for this are all there as free software. I just would compile everything in one CWM-flashable ROM that's ready to use.
Interest anyone?
In the first thoughts the following software would apply:
Based on stripped down (because ram matters in terms of fc and huge games) CyanogenMod 9

I am interested in this! Even if there isn't much interest and you end up not making the rom, please post the names of the apps that it would contain for those interested

I wish this idea would kick into high gear. After reading "No Place To Hide", I think it's time for a ROM with enough encryption and privacy options to make all of us safe.

the thing is you would be forced to use other services than that you are used to and that are common. you would have to say goodbye facebook, google, instagram and i dont know what most people use nowadays to give away their rights. as you can see in terms of replys - there are nearly none. no one with this device seem to be interested about that issue.
you would need to use services like jabber/xmpp instead of skype for example and tell your friends about the opportunity. it would be in interest for everyone but the effort for most people is too big.
and what you say about a safe phone - it's not even marginal possible. you can just encrypt your data so nobody can listen what you do. as you use a phone you can still be tracked by your phone number, other services you use with your browser, by blind sms messages used by feds...
edit: just check the first post. there are some alternatives. you can modify your phone like delete everything with the name google, facebook ......... in it and services / apps that require authentication and are calling home. there are several apps you can use to delete system applications and services. then install some new apps via f-droid that respect your privacy like some i mentioned in the first post

[Q] Email digital signature and encryption

I have a couple Email Digital Certificates (.p12) that I use to sign and encrypt emails from my desktop. I would like to start using them on my phone, but cannot seem to find any options in the native HTC Email app. I got them installed in the security settings on the phone, but just cannot find an option to use them in my emails. I have also tried using K-9, but cannot find an option within that app either.
So, is there any way to digitally sign and/or encrypt emails within the native email app?
If not, are there any reputable, trustworthy 3rd party apps in the app store that have this capability?
Oh and not sure if it actually matters, but I have the VZW variant One M8....
Thanks in advance,
Kratos

I think I finally figured this out. Android (for some very strange reason) doesn't actually support digital signatures or encryption with email natively. Therefore, one MUST use a third party app to process encrypted or digitally signed emails.
I have checked out R2Mail2 as a possible solution and am thus far liking it. There were a couple other options (but only a couple I could find) and they either had very low reviews or were requesting permissions that just didn't make sense. In fact one of them actually tried to explain why they needed permissions to view call logs, but weren't convincing enough for me so I skipped over it.
I also have a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and it supposedly supports certificates natively (something Samsung added themselves), but I guess it doesn't support S/MIME with the .p12 extension as it continues to tell me that there are no files found on my device.
If anyone has any other solutions that are better than having to use (and pay for) a 3rd party app, please do tell.
Thanks Kratos

No one has any ideas about native S/MIME support?
Kratos
I've been looking into this for a while... and I think you already found the best solution. R2Mail2 handles both S/MIME and PGP. I haven't seen any other good options for S/MIME. K9 + APG can give you PGP. There used to be a simple native mail app that would do PGP, but it looks like thats been pulled by Google.

Privacy in relation to Google

A while ago I came across this thread:

and I'd like to know whether the Google collecting stuff also applies to a default LineageOS install? Or does it start only after GApps is installed (even the smallest possible one)?
Personal info, the minute you enter your google email address.

OK, but that's limited to that app and the permissions you give it - and that goes pretty much for all apps, Google or not. I was thinking more about the system-wide "telemetry".

Not really. Google has tentacles into so many things it's mind boggling.
For example: you may think that you are keeping your location data private by turning off that nice shiny location services toggle right at the top of your screen. But guess what? By default, various Google frameworks are set to override that whenever they feel like it, to ping your location silently anyway.
And even if you have the GPS chip disabled in hardware (or it doesn't exist at all), they will try to triangulate you based on other visible entities like WiFi and Bluetooth signals. (You know those Google Streetmap cars that drive around everywhere taking pictures of everything? They also are collecting a giant database of every single wireless signal they encounter, and linking them to the exact geo coordinates where they were detectable. And they also collect this data from every device running Android. So if your downstairs neighbor has a WiFi access point or bluetooth device in Google's location database, the simple fact your mobile device can see one of those signals means they've now got YOUR location, too.)
Neat, huh?

Even the "pico" Gapps - which includes (IIRC) just the Gplay services framework, Gplay app, PIM sync and Google Cloud Messaging components is enough.
On one of my devices I have pico Gapps installed on Lineage 14.1 and, as per usual, it is constantly trying to get my location. (I know this because I have Privacy Manager set to popup an approval prompt for both Gplay and Gplay services.) Another thing that the Google frameworks like to do is send/receive silent SMS messages. Once again, if it were not for the CM/Lineage Privacy Manager prompts, this would all be invisible.
Agree with Exabyter. Google is soo inside the apps and it's services that it's hard to predict if they can get your data or not. The Google Services Apps that give you access to lot of apps features have a lot of phone permission

So using alternative markets such as F-Droid and Aptoide, and not installing GApps at all, can be a mitigating factor?

Yes. And I was thinking along those lines myself for quite a while.
Unfortunately the big problem with those app sources is that they cannot handle paid apps/subscriptions.
F-droid is great if you are an open-source pedant, and as much as I like it (because among other things, generally speaking most of the stuff on there isn't doing sneaky stuff), the selection is very small.
Aptoide has a large percentage of the major apps on Gplay, but many of them are there without the developer's permission. Anyone can create an appstore there and upload any APK they want. (I actually have a private store there I intend to use at some point as a sort of APK repository for my various devices, but in practice I'm not sure how well this will work) And if you get apps from a personal user's store there there's a possibility there's something illegitimate about it. Aptoide checks APK signatures but I like to run a local A/V scanner anyway.
My current thinking is install the smallest possible open-source Gapps (eg pico), and then try to put a leash on what is left.
I'm still trying to work out how to accomplish that. Going to be posting a question in this forum shortly about location spoofing, for example. (In short: a recent AOSP patch may have really set us back here. )

Question Best call recorder? (UK)

I'm aware some regions have call recording as an option however in the UK this isn't automatically possible.
Can anyone recommend a good call recorder?
Even better if the stock Google dialer could be modded to allow this!
Update: seems this does the trick!

Worked for me, had to force close and reopen the dialer a couple times. Also auto-record doesn't seem to work or no way to set it.
Yet to properly test it out, especially silencing the call recording notification...
I've always had the best luck with https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.axet.callrecorder/
Note: use version 1.7.13, not 1.7.14.
Although the developer has not really done a great job maintaining it for Android 11 or newer, it still works for the most part.
And note that it has to be installed as a privileged application to work, i.e., /system/priv-app/. There is a magisk module that does this with it.
