Hi.
I've come across a rather serious problem with my device. I noticed the issue a few hours ago, but suspect it has started since this morning (it's 12AM local time, at the time of writing).
A bit of context:
I forgot to charge the phone overnight, so in the morning the battery was almost finished. I managed to let it charge for around 45 minutes when I had to leave for a class. It was around 65-70%.
Midday, it had dropped to 20% (heavy usage; WiFi AP with HSDPA) and tried to charge with my friend's BlackBerry USB cable (same microUSB slot, right?) to my laptop USB port. It didn't charge. Tried another USB cable. Still didn't charge. I figured it might be something with their cables, so I decided to just let it die.
Fastforward to home, I immediately plugged in my own cable before the phone died. It didn't charge. My head was filled with WTFs at that point.
After a few reboots (and a restore to my previous nand backup), it finally got charging through the AC and USB. But sometimes when I plug it out and back in, it won't charge again.
Now, thankfully, it's charging from the USB port on my laptop, but at an agonizing rate: for the past hour and a half, it only went up 5%.

Does anybody know what's happening here? I think it might either be something with the low-level software or a port it the microUSB slot has puffin guano in it.
Thanks in advance.
Device specs in the sig.
Bumping with update:
Turns out USB charging was fine.
But now it seems that the device will come in and out of charging; connected for less than a second, then disconnected, then connected again. As though it's indecisive whether it should charge or not.
When plugged to my laptop, it will sound a chime indicating that it has been connected, followed by another chime of disconnection.
What in the glorious fuddydoodle is happening to the phone? What should I do?
I see you use glados 1.23 so maybe you have a problem with fast charge. Try 1.22

Yea, I was kinda figured fast charging had something to do with that, but hadn't had the time for flashing a new kernel.
Sent from GT-I9250 via XDA Android App
Yea, changed the kernel to the latest lean kernel, and it still has problems charging.
I'm gonna flash to stock Google factory images to make sure that this isn't software related.
Also, bumping.
Final bump.
I've googled it, and it seems to be everywhere. It's a medium-priority issue in AOSP's Google code. Here's a similar thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427539
This sucks so much.

Okay, good, I'm not the only one. It was a bear driving home from Washington DC last night without a proper GPS. Batt was draining with the car charger plugged in and running GPS and BT.
Thanks for taking the time...
My Note 8 3g is showing a strange behaviour as of late.
I leave it plugged in the original wallcharger from Samsung, switched on/ 3G active.
Plugging in at roughly 10% that would give me 50-60% in the morning after 7-8 hours.
Battery & Task manager don't show any permanent CPU hogs or wake locks.
Device is loaded with a couple of generic apps but not rooted...
With a 4600mAh battery and a the 2000mAh Samsung charger charging at 0.5C the tablet should be finished after roughly 3 hours.
My Note 8 is taking twice the time for half the charge?!
Before giving it a hard reset I would like to know, if someone has an idea / solution.
Thanks again for Your time,
Yoko
That is a worry. I get full charge after about 3 hours on my samsung charger, and about 10% charge per hour on my blackberry charger at work. Mine is the wifi only model though, i dont know how much juice the 3g and what ever other connections you have running will use and if that would make up much difference. Sounds like a significant amount slower though. Do you have access to another 2A charger to see if its a problem with the samsung charger rather than the tablet?
In my case was the faulty charger cable, I was getting nuts searching for help when someone (don't remember which tread was) said about that. There's a free app on playstore that shows you how much current are receiving your device. With that app I realized that it was the cable, not the charger or software related.
Hope that helps.

I would try, in order:
1. Check your battery stats to make sure nothing weird is chewing up the battery (should be screen, Android OS and possibly Google Services as the top culprits...if there is any *app* above those and you're not really using the app, uninstall it)
2. Bypass a surge protector (if there is one) and plug directly into the wall.
3. Try a different cable
4. Try a different charger
5. Try the charger and cable on a different device that uses 2.1a if possible
If there are no rogue apps, nothing changes and the charger seems to function properly, then you are probably looking at a hardware problem with the device. I would guess a factory reset wouldn't accomplish anything.
also if you are looking for a diff charger make sure the amps are the same. i believe its a 2a charge on this tab. if not then charging will take longer.
Thanks to all Your kind replies!
Sorry for staying quiet for a couple of days, it's been a very busy week for me.
My problem appears to be solved - it has indeed been the USB cord!
Seriously....who would have thought.
I use the exact same cable to charge my HTC One S without an issue.
Thanks again to all of You! :good:

Yoko
I faced the same Issue. Just let the battery Drop to %0 and Turned off then let the device pwged in overnight. For me that fix it without using any apps
NB. I know letting Li-ion battery drop to %0 is bad!

Hello:
My Tab Pro 8.4 has picked up an issue - it stops charging at 89%. Battery monitor - the one built in, as well as GSAM Battery monitor - show the charging increasing charge in a linear fashion to some 85%, then the rate gradually decreases, till the curve flattens at 89%. The phone still claims that the battery is charging.
I just discharged the phone fully, let it recharge - same behavior.
I did root the phone 2 days before, I wonder, if that has something to do with it.
Thanks for any info, Paul.

Hello,
maybe you need to recalibrate your battery. This can be done by deleting batterystats.bin. Search google play, there are some apps, that can do it.

Thanks for the info.
In desperation, I tried few things - first a Nandroid restore to the state just after rooting - that did not help.
Next I performed a hard reset. That fixed the problem for now.
I will carefully put back in the xposed modules I used, an see/hope that the problem does not come back.

Hi,
Did you find the actual cause of this?
I have a stock 8.4, non rooted and I find the same thing, I have attached a screen shot of the battery charge and dream. ...
Can anyone help with this please, the battery is bad enough without it topping off at 89%!!
Cheers,
Ian
Hi,
Has anyone else had this issue?
I let my tab run down to a dead battery, plugged it on over night and it is still only at 87% ...
Its driving me nuts!
I am not rooted, so don't see bow it's anything I have done, any ideas?!;
Thanks in advance

I do not have an answer, but I wanted to thank you for posting - your answer seems to indicate, that this is a issue not related to rooting.
While dealing with this, I have put back the stock rom ( but still with custom recovery on the device ) - which made charging work to 100%, then rooted again. With this config the charging worked for few days to 100%, till if failed again all of a sudden, getting stuck at 91% charge, and claiming, that the charging was ongoing for may hours.
While the charging was broken, I put on the CleanROM 1.0, and that fixed the charging problem again.
I do not see a clear pattern of this failure....
Paul.

This does not "calibrate" anything. Any app that claims to fix the battery meter by wiping this file, is making a bogus claim. All the batterystats.bin files does, is indicate how much battery various apps/processes are using since the last charge. The file gets wiped ever time you connect the charger:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
What you want, is to reset the "high" and "low" voltage flags related to Smart Battery. If there is an app that can do that, it might resolve your issue. Flashing a ROM also resets the flags (why you always need to do a battery charge/discharge cycle to get accurate readings every time you flash a ROM). So you might flash the ROM you are already on (stock?) and see if that helps.
But the issue itself is odd. If a higher voltage is achieved, I believe the "high" flag should automatically be reset. I shouldn't just "stop" at 89%.
Yes, I have (had) the same problem. I would use the tab through the day, then plug it in. In the morning, it would almost always be around 89...sometimes a bit more, others a bit less. I loaded battery doctor from the play store and set up a widget to kill all but a few specified apps (yeah, I typically try to avoid task killers, but this was driving me crazy). In my case, when I killed the apps, the battery would finish charging.
Theory (take it with a grain of salt as your mileage may vary): either the charger I am using or the tab has 'intelligence' that slows the charging down when it nears full, possibly to protect the battery. Certain apps running (sleeping?) in the background seem to keep the tab perpetually in a near-full charge state -- just enough of a drain to balance the 'slowing' charge. Every time I have killed the apps, the tab has quickly finished charging.
Again, this is just my experience. YMMV Good luck.
Try running the battery down to below 20% then recharge it. That should recalibrate the battery monitor.

i have had the exact same issue , mine stops charging at 54% , need to unplug replug and then it starts charging back again, also from 78% it jumped straight to 100, something is really wrong , how could samsung break something so simple and basic
I've got a very similar problem. It stops charging, usually at something like 40 or 50. If I restart it will continue charging, but not all the way, maybe up to 70 or 80. I think I tried just disconnecting the charger and reconnecting it and it didn't work but I'll try it again as that would be easier than restarting...
I sent it for service and after weeks of back and forth they gave me the old "it's rooted, so it's out of warranty".
F U Samsung. This piece of **** tablet has been messed up since day 1. First with the over sensitive screen and now this. Sony FTW.

Can you please take a picture of the procedure or make a short vid please? You open in from the rear (on the fake leather) of from the front( screens bezel) ?
I have the same problem with my SM-T325 , i've tried everything on forums : reset, hard reset( vol menu button power button) nothing works !
Thanks !
Ps: I'm using genuine 2A white charger and even tried with Asus Nexus 7 charger 2A( ridiculously is that it works better than with the genuine samsung, the white one needs 5 unplug/plugs, with Asus Black charger only 3 unplug/plugs )

My battery has the same issue. I'm going to start charging my Tab Pro 8.4 with a lower amp/volt charger. I think the 5.3 volts & 2 amps puts stress on the internal charging / battery regulator circuit. The 5.3 volt makes the usb cable in the tablet reasonably hot to the touch. (a hunch)
Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 Battery Replacement Video
Update: I scraped the 5.3 volt charger for a standard 5 volt charger @ 2 amps. It won't charge while in use but it does charge to 100% from 5%, powered off overnight. I also tested a 5 volt 1 amp charger (while slower) did charge from ~50% to 100%.
I would like to see others test this theory out.
Would also like to note, I believe Samsung included a 5.3V charger instead of a standard 5V so the tablet is able to charge while in use. My guess is the circuitry was originally designed for the standard 5 volts but once they saw the tablet's charge rate while on, they decided to throw in a different charger to make up for their mistake instead of a more reliable circuit design to handle the volt boost. More then likely they did tests to see if the tablet was able to handle the new charger but did not conduct the experiment for enough time to see the degrading results (faulty battery level readout).
If they knew of the issue in production they could have fixed the issue in a batch revision or recall or they flat out ignored the results and are in denial. Shame on Samsung if this is the case. Funny how they released the "better"("revision") Tab S while refusing to fix the Tab Pro. Now it seems to be biting them in the ass.
I still want to completely test this theory out and give it more time, but so far my assumption is seemingly correct.

I had another interesting experience with this tablet.... it charged 100% without notice that the battery is full(I saw this tiny little detail -battery full icon- ensures that it is really charged) restarted it to verify something and shock !!! the value dropped to 62% and the charging sequence stopped ...and even if it shows "charging" while I'm typing these lines, it dropped to 59% ). **** !!!
is there anyone with problems charging the t320?
it goes fine until 40%, above that or stops charging or is really slow, like 1% in one hour.
i thought it was a rom issue, so i flashed the original rom from sammobile
the charging at this moment is 56%, 150mA average, when isn't negative - 200
this is stock usb and charger, and also with other charger/cable is the same

Pop the back off gently and disconnect the battery from the main board. When you reconnect it, let it charge up fully before turning it back on. After this, it will behave normally for the rest of time.

Thanks for the reply but it seems my issue was caused by a faulty outlet socket. The socket works fine for everything else but would only charge the tablet when it was powered down. Tried charging off my laptop and desktop usb and it was the same, but tried some other outlet sockets and they charge fine. I understand the usb outlets might not provide enough to charge the tablet but hadn't considered the socket as I know it works, must be just enough high resistance to prevent it charging a working tablet but provides enough current to charge it when it's powered down. The fact it was showing a 56% charge was just co-incidence.
Thought it might be worth posting this as it's not something I've come across before.

Here's the thing. When mine was misbehaving I could get it to start charging again by switching outlets or even reversing polarity on the wall plug. It was a temporary fix as within days the problem would be back. I thought I had it fixed so many times. It always came back. If it happens to you again just remember the above post. It's been four months since I did it and never once has it been quirky. Something in the hardware needed reset that only disconnecting the battery could do.

cabel pull
hoping this works. I just filled out a warranty email today for same issue on 12.2 Tab Pro. It pried the case open with a credit card. Very slow, took about 7 minutes. Pulling the power cable in the middle, probably behind green tape. Use needle nose pliers or something small behind the wires and pull up. The pins are tiny and will f*ck the whole thing up if bent.
I get the feeling that the screen turns itself on even when eye tracking settings are off or closed in case. I hear the annoying sound at night when charging. Why Sammy does not have a smart current sensor built in is insane. Asking you to unplug when most people will leave on and charge overnight. Just dumb.
I can't get past 57% charging for last 2 weeks. Stock, unrooted for first time in a long time, so I am pissed to hear ROM had not effect. This is likely undocumented hardware issue Sammy doesn't want to admit to.
even on my T325 I had the same problem but I solved it this way ...
I have worn the battery completely until turn off my device, I loaded the battery overnight to device OFF.
wipe and install rom custom samsung
I launched and used app "battery calibraton" (root)
I have now done 4 cycles of charging to 1600/1750 mA

Perhaps not, but I and MANY others have encountered the same problem. Across multiple Roms, fully discharging and recharging, running the so called calibration apps. Rebooting, unpluggin, replugging. The problem NEVER fully went away. It would work for a charge cycle or two or three, then would reappear.
I finally took the back off, unplugged and replugged the connector., closed up the case, charged it for several hours before turning it back on.
Not ONCE has the problem occurred since that intervention. That was over a month ago.
Maybe it's not lithium ion behavior, it might be in the charging circuit and hardware.
If you have a suggestion, then by all means share it so others can solve their problem.

I've already written how I solved the problem, but in 5 years and dozens of Android rom installed on various devices, this problem for me was very frequent.
Always the same. On my ST325 I solved like other times in the past.
No news I found on this battery, battery charger of the same problems since I know Android

sorry for my bad English ...
for this device I've tried all the roms available (CM11 or not)
the problem is very acute especially after CM11> Pro Plus V2, but the problems had already occurred some time with the various installations buil CM11
about a week I did the operation described above (already done in the past even on my previous samsung device, Note 1, Galaxy s4, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy tab 3 g3 ) with the same result ...
The battery charges very quickly with the device ON to 1700 mA (monitored with "Monitor battery widgwt pro")
again sorry for my english
I just got home from the store and I had my phone plugged in to the car using one of those USB car charging adapters that plugs into the 12V outlet.
I was using BT for music and GPS. When I pulled up and went to unplug my phone, I noticed it was extremely hot to the touch. I then noticed the phone was blinking the orange notification light and not charging. (Instead of a solid orange notification light and charging status)
I'm kind of worried, to be honest. Any info on this would be appreciated.
Just let it cool off for a while. Charging stops when a certain temperature threshold is exceeded. What firmware are you on?
Charging + GPS + BT music? Yeah, not surprising it got hot.
Virtually all smartphones will go into a sort of safe mode when they get too hot. It's to prevent the battery from overloading and catching fire, which li-ion batteries are known to do.

Ah, okay. I did used to do all the same stuff with my M7 without this issue. Are we able to force the stock kernel to make the processor not clock up as high?

So far, no. The clock speeds will not stick.

Did you mean 1.40? Or 2.8/7? If 1.40, that's kind of a buggy firmware as it relates to charging. I would just limit the amount of time it's plugged in a little bit. Like unplug it every so often. How long was it plugged in to get the flashing orange?

Well, this thread is from a long time ago, but exact same thing is happening to me, and it's good to finally find someone else who can confirm it's a normal thing (literally no one else on the internet has posted about this somehow?). For me, it's quickcharging on carpet in a poorly air-conditioned bedroom that's heating the phone up. Am on latest MM stock unrooted. :good:
You also get the flashing orange light when the cable can't carry the current. Buy better cables.
