Unexplained Chrome Change - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I do not now know if it is related but I installed two Magisk Modules (Active Edge Mod and MagiskHide Props Config) yesterday. Now, when I am in Chrome and click on the open tabs button, instead of seeing the open tabs that I can switch to or close I see text New tab and chrome-native://newtab.
Hopefully, someone smarter than me knows how this happened and how to get it back to normal. I tried clearing cache and data on the Chrome app, but it is still there. I do know that chrome-native://newtab/ is a Chrome setting that can be accessed by browser directly. I can x it out to close like any other tab (this text will show up multiple times if more than one tab is open). Opening a new tab or new browser works fine. It is just when going to change or close a tab that you see this.

I would try to remove the modules and see if it still does it.

That was the next step when I get home from work (or over the holiday weekend if it turns into a factory reset or something) but was hoping someone had seen the issue.

Found it along with probably the culprit. Most likely the Edge Sense Plus Accessibility Helper. Now that I know what it is, I am trying to determine if I like the tab names instead of preview cards.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/07/31/chrome-68-beta-bug-gives-tab-switcher-basic-look-temporary/

totally thought it was an update to chrome lol. i have edge sense also, so that explains it.

Ya that's happened to me once or twice, try force close browser or even rebooting the phone and it should be back to normal. I don't know why that happens.
im not the developer of it, but try the maxthon browser... its not the "simpleest" or the tinyiest, but the main reason for me to use it, that its the ONLY browser that works with the java based groupwise web overlay.
all other browsers slides all graphics to a non visible area or something... kinda weird.
YOUR problem should be gone with that browser too ... dont ask me why

Try Google Chrome for Android. Once you'll go Chrome, won't come back.
It's much better and faster. The only thing it's missing is Flash support.

[How To]Replace Galaxy S3 Touchwiz Apps with Pure ICS Apps

This thread shows what AOSP (pure Google ICS) apps are safe to replace Touchwiz Apps with on your Galaxy S III to get that Nexus/CyanogenMod type pure ICS look and feel (see screenshots below). These have been tested with S-Voice and it is still able to open links and commands in the ICS apps.

I am not responsible for any issues or problems with your phone. You are messing with System Apps. I highly recommend creating a Nandroid Backup before starting in case something goes wrong
Requirements
Your phone must be rooted and have Super User installed. I highly recommend making a Nandroid Backup in ClockworkMod Recovery before moving system apps just in case.
Install Root Explorer and Titanium Backup from the Play Store.
Steps
Download the APK file you want (linked below)
Uninstall the original Touchwiz application through Titanium Backup then reboot your phone. I recommend backing up applications before you uninstall just in case something goes wrong or you want to restore them.
Open Root Explorer and navigate to your download folder under SD Card
Long press on your downloaded APK file, select move and navigate to your System App folder.
Select Mount R/W at the top of Root Explorer and touch Paste.
Long press on the APK and set permissions to rw-r-r-- (See image at end of post.)
Touch the moved APK file and install it. If you get an error message, make sure the Touchwiz Version of the app is uninstalled. Reboot, then try again.
Tested and confirmed to work
Gallery
Update 6/24: Uninstalling the Touchwiz Gallery causes the Touchwiz Camera to force close after taking a picture and touching the thumbnail preview on the bottom right side. Workaround: Close the camera app and open the AOSP Gallery to preview the picture.
Browser (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Browser. It is listed as "[BOOKMARKS] Internet 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then proceed to step 5.)
Calendar (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Calendar. It is listed as "Calendar 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5)
Update 6/25: Make sure you uninstall only the Touchwiz Calendar (you can tell by the icon listed in Titanium Backup.) If you uninstall the one with the AOSP Calendar Icon you may lose Calendar Sync and S-Voice support for the Calendar.
Messaging (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz MMS App. It is called "[SMS/MMS Prefs] M... 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5.)
Calculator
Movie Studio
(Update 6/29) Email/Exchange (Must install both AOSP Email and Exchange APK's in order to work. In order to install you Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Email AND Exchange App in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5. I was having issues connecting to Hotmail/MSN/Live account servers but had no issues with all others. May be temporary server issue. More testing needed.)
Tested but had issues
Clock/Alarm (Force closes upon reboot)
Camera (Will not work. Thanks naturefreak85 for testing)
Still need to download and test
Phone/Dialer (isn't supposed to work due to Touchwiz frameworks)
Contacts (isn't supposed to work due to Touchwiz frameworks)
Grabbed from the Play Store
Nova Launcher
ICS Keyboard
Having Issues?
Read the OP completely
Make sure permissions are set properly on the app you're trying to install. In Root Explorer, long press on the APK you're trying to install and set permissions. It should be set like this:
Make sure the Touchwiz version of the app is uninstalled. Don't uninstall more than you need to (Calendar).
Reboot after making changes
Restore the original app using Titanium Backup or do a Nandroid restore if all else fails.

Will replacing the messaging app keep the notification icon on the lock screen working, or do I have to keep the Samsung version for this functionality?
AndroidFan4, I can't thank you enough. Using your guide I was able to replace the touchwiz messaging app with the ICS messaging app without issue. I find delivery confirmations to be useless in the touchwiz version (the confirmation shows up as a second message). In the ICS app it works like blackberry messenger where the delivery confirmation appears as a green check mark next to the sent time.
Thanks!

This is fantastic and thanks for figuring this out.
I don't have the phone yet (still debating between the S3 or the Galaxy Nexus) but this might push me towards the S3.
One question though. The stock browser on the S3 does text reflow pretty weird. It doesn't let you pinch to a zoom level you'd like and then double tap to get text to reflow, something I've heard the Nexus does with no problems. I know it may sound silly but this is the main thing keeping me from the S3.
If you use the AOSP browser on S3 following these instructions does it follow the regular S3 style text reflow (I tested this on a demo unit and from what I could see text is just automatically squished to one side regardless of zoom level) or does it revert to the reflow behavior seen on a Nexus?
Thanks!
Awesome. Thanks for this!

It will remove the Samsung messaging icon that notifies you in the middle of the lockscreen. You can however add the AOSP messaging app to the quick launch bar on the bottom of the lockscreen for essentially the same thing and you'll still get the LED notification and notification bar alerts for messages.
You can find that option under Settings/Security/Lock Screen Options/Shortcuts.

I no longer have the Samsung Browser installed so I can't test but you are supposed to enable the setting on the AOSP Browser by pressing Menu/Settings/Advanced/Auto-Fit pages in the AOSP Browser. I just tested and it doesn't appear to be working like it has on some of my other devices. Pinch to zoom will zoom in without reflow and a double tap zooms it back out. I'll double check with another AOSP Browser APK to see if it fixes it.

Well S-Voice is designed to work with the Samsung Apps so that makes sense. Honestly, with all my previous devices I've always been quick to get AOSP ROM's/Apps on my phone, but I'm thorougly impressed with this phone and its software, replacing most of these with pure ICS apps seems more of a downgrade if you ask me.

Out of curiosity, I restored my copy of CM9's Trebuchet Launcher that was backed up on my old HTC Glacier running a CM9 build. Works perfectly on my phone, and brings it even closer to that stock Android feel everyone's clamoring for.
I can't vouch for anyone else's phone, but you can get the launcher here (requires root, includes instructions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410674
EDIT: At the end of the thread, there's one or two GT-I9003 users using it as well, it seems.

Weird I didn't have either of those issues. In Titanium Backup I remember seeing two Calendars listed. One had the Touchwiz Calendar icon and one had an AOSP Calendar Icon. I only uninstalled the Touchwiz one. Maybe that was the issue. I'll update the OP indicating to only uninstall one of the two.

Hey that browser reflow issue you have isn't silly at all. I use my phone primarily for browsing, even a lot while I'm home & that is a feature all of my HTC phones have. Unfortunately the gs3 doesn't do the reflow, even w/ the double tap like on my Transformer Prime. This is honestly the only feature that this phone is lacking to make it the complete package for me. I asked in the q&a thread if anyone knows of a browser that may have this feature, but I got nothing? I'm not sure if it has to be coded into the phones framework? Now I own a lot of devices, but let me tell you that even without that feature, don't short yourself by passing on the gs3. I'm using it primarily for now, and while I rely on that feature, I'm loving this phone even without it. The Gnex is a nice phone, I had it & sold it, but not because it wasn't nice. But, the fact is the gs3 is so smooth that it's the first phone that really made me think that the hardware is finally there, finally so smooth. In my opinion, the One X is the only device that I've test drove that's in the same class as the gs3, and that was the international one x.

I've never actually had a browser do reflow like that so i had to find a google video showing exactly what you mean.
After some research using stock sgs3 browser, ics+ browser, dolphin hd, firefox for android and opera mobile the only browser on sgs3 that i can get to do this is opera. I've messed with settings on all of them and opera is the only one that does it and it does it automatically when you pinch to zoom, so no need for double tap. I actually find this more annoying than helpful myself, but I hope this information helps you out.
How about the ICS email?
Has anyone tested out the dialer yet? That seems to be the only thing I would really want (for the google voice app integration).
If anyone has, how does S Voice handle being told to make calls and stuff? (need that for hands free driving)

After some hunting, I've found opera, and maxathon both work for reflow. The opera browser kind of stutters and I don't care much for it. Maxathon is tolerable though and I could probably get used to it. This feature is just very important for me, as I'm reading on the Web at least a couple hours every day, and I think it makes it much easier for me. I want the HTC browser! Lol

[Q] Change notification bar to be more tablet-like?

I like my Note 8! It's practically perfect for me, except for two big, glaring issues:
While the hardware "home" button is great, the "menu" and "back" buttons below the screen eliminate the advantage gained by spending the extra $100 by making it impossibly frustrating to take notes in class, and
The thickness of the notification bar is pretty cool, but its placement and behavior is decidedly phone-like.
These issues should be software-fixable! I just don't know what I'm doing.
The question, in three parts:
Is there any way to/How do you
Move the notification bar to the bottom of the screen,
Change it to be more like a proper tablet's bar, including buttons and the one-touch notification pop-up thing, without going CM7's route, and
Disable the "menu" and "back" buttons while keeping the "home" button? (Alright if "home" needs to be disabled too, though.)

I agree, it should be something that is editable without much change, but the reason for it is just how each particular program (including the system files, notification bar, etc.) just read the screen's DPI and go from there.
To answer your questions, 1, 2, and 3 are a No until custom development begins. Then all of those wants could easily be fulfilled.

Here is what i did.
After I rooted the note 8, I went to the play store and installed "Rom Toolkit" Then, when to the performance tab in Rom toolkit and lowered the "ro.sf.lcd_density" to 170. For some reason it show this twice. I only changed the top one.
For some reason, it will move the notification bar to the bottom and act like a tablet at that point. I was surprised and it is a nice change. Of course you will need to tweak a few items to get it the way you want, but it great! I do recommend you guys use a Launcher from the Play store. I used Apex launcher for mine.
I will not be responsible if you screw something up. Change this at your own risk!
I'm waiting for this ROM. Then the note 8.0 would be perfect. I love the form factor, but wish it was a small note 10.1 vs. a large note II.

edit- Holding down power and the down-volume button, I got to the "odin mode" screen. I'm going to download Kies and see if it allows for recovery.

ok, here is what you can try. Go into recovery mode and If i recall it is the power and vol up button. When the Samsung boot screen shows up, where is shows the GT5110 etc.. Keep holding the Power and vol up button a few seconds longer then let go.
Now, when you are on the recovery screen, choose wipe data/factory reset and cache. AFter it is done, reboot.
Should boot up ok after that.

Samsung's support site doesn't seem to have the firmware available for download. The official help pages tell me to use Kies. I am updating it now, but would rather use Odin, of course.
I'm doing a "firmware emergency recovery" with Kies. It was simple enough to start... now let's see how it ends. I think that it's pretty darn cool of Samsung to basically say "yeah, tweaking is okay, and we'll help you fix it if you break it."

The app from the store is indeed the one that I was referring to. Hmm... I will try and do the build.prop edit again once this thing is done restoring. Hope it works, to be sure! It's just too bad that there's no way yet to go in and change a simple little file. I hope that we get a proper recovery soon!

Yeah, I wish it was easy.... Now that XDA has a forum dedicated to the note 8, hoping there will be more development on it and we start see support for it. Holy cow, I see what you're saying. It feels like a functional tablet now, instead of a giant-sized phone! Yeah, I agree, hope Onenote would do that, but I wont hold my breath with Microsoft.

I'm having an issue with the cool setup... whenever I go to install something, the tablet freezes and necessitates a reboot. This stops happening when I change the DPI back to default. Any ideas on how to make this stop happening? Thanks for your help so far
Sent from my GT-N5110 using XDA Premium HD app
best resource for Samsung firmware I've seen
is Samfirmware.com. tons of firmwares for most Samsung devices.
Before you get too deep into modding, make a note of what ROM your device is on, including all the characters in the code - ie, mine is
JZ054K.N5110UECMCA
(and I'd love to know what folks who haven't flashed their devices have - I'm pretty sure that's what Kies downloaded for me, though.)
Rather than try to find the Note 8 (listed as a phone, since in some places it will be one) you can use the "search for your device" box to get a list of all the firmware they have for it.,

A checked on SAMMOBILE and they have a lot of the stock ROMs but not the US 4.1.2 version yet. After I got my Tab, it did the OTA update on the 16th. Sammobile should have this up soon so if we have problems we can Odin back. They have a number of European 4.1.2 Roms, British and Austrian.
samfirmware doesn't always know where a firmware is distributed.
The one I downloaded from them, I picked because it matched the code on the packaging:
the packaging on my unit reads "Model GT-N5110ZWYXAR"
The full listing for the firmware I downloaded included region XAR when I downloaded it; Samfirmware has now updated that to "Cellular South," which is a US cell carrier code from Samsung. (Cellular South is AKA Cspire, HQ'ed in Ridgeland, Mississippi, it turns out.)
My memory is that I actually did use Kies to recover my device, but never want to again, as it involved downloading a 1.2 gig file over a DSL line. Having the full firmware around should I want to do a restore or inspect the default configuration is very handy, though. I've extracted the /system image onto one of my linux boxes to poke around in.
thanks to whomever suggested we look at multwindow apps. I set up "Samsung Multiwindow Manager" earlier today, and it's great. I told it I was on a Note II and so far it's working fine.
I've never been able to get a viable build.prop with a lower lcd_density setting to work, and stopped trying.
For those giving it a go and not wanting to do a complete device reset:
Rather than Odin mode, get into recovery mode. (when shut down: Home + Volume Up + Power for a couple of seconds after the splash screen)
If you connect your device to your computer in recovery mode, the recovery shell that Samsung puts on the device supports ADB.
Whenever i've bootlooped my device trying to adjust lcd_density, I've been able to restore a backup of build.prop and reboot.
HOWEVER: make sure your backup of build.prop is on the device (preferably build.prop.bak or similar in /system) - I wasn't able to push the file in in recovery mode, but could rm the unhappy build.prop and cp the backup file back into place.

Actually, I noticed the number on build.prop in Galaxy Tab Plus is 160. You try the number between 160 and 200.
There are two lines in build.prop.

XHaloFloatingWindow problem on Tab s 10.5 LTE

Hi,
The xposed module is working fine so far, but the only problem is, that windows in the background stop refreshing after they have been more then one time in the front. Like when i start a video and switch to another window, the video plays fine in the background, but if i switch back to the video and then again back to another window, the video stops playing... switching back to the video of course activates the video again.
The option to not pause background windows is of course activated, but i guess theres a conflict with a samsung app or something... maybe someone has a clue? Seems like no one here is using
this module, as there isnt a single thread on the tab s subforums...
Edit: well, reading the describtion again sometimes helps...
"This module is know to have some compatibility issues with Samsung TouchWiz ROMs.
Currently, only the disabling app pausing is not working."
I thought im lucky as i use nova launcher... though that doesnt deactivate touchwiz in the background i guess.
I have problems too with the mod. So I quit using it. No idea how to fix it but I think samsungs multiwindow is better

I prefer to choose the app i want windowed and in which size and where on the screen... multiwindow cant do that unfortunately and is limited to a few apps.

Weird behaviour scrolling lists like amazon or aliexpress.

Hello there,
I recently purchased a used HTC 10 (original purchase date ~5.2016)...
Every time I am searching the flash deals in the Amazon App (I think I have similar problems with AliExpress too, but I am not able to reproduce this on poruse. Amazon is every time making these problems.), I have this weird scrolling behavior.
Procedure:
1. Open App - enter flash deals
2. scroll list, click on entry, go back
3. scroll further
---> Screen will return to the position, where you last checked one entry by clicking on it.
It looks like the "keyboard-choosing-cursor" is stuck there. (Yellow frame around the entry), and I can't go much further down, until it will scoll up again.
Fixing is going back to previous page, going back again, scrolling down to the last items I was.
This is not the workaround I could live with, since I am very limited on using these apps.
Already shoot some google searches, but only got things like "not responsive touch" etc...
Other apps seems normal, eBay has no such problem since now...
Amazon seems to have this problems only within the flash-sales, not the normal.
For AliExpress I wasn't able to reproduce this on purpose.
Is this a app specific fault? Or is it my device?
I am coming from a M7 with CyangenMod 13 (6.0.1) and I am running on the 10 6.0.1 Stock...
Someone else experiencing this? Or heard about it?
I am very clueless..
Thanks
houston
I've noticed this behaviour too with Swipe for Facebook and Chrome Browser. I could reproduce with Swipe by opening an external link with, for example, a floating browser like Flynx, returning to Swipe app i can't scroll well, same behaviour as your. I noticed that to the dev and it comes with a fix, but in the same time i had an update from Google Webview (Beta) in the Play Store, so i can't say who was the guilty one., but I don't have this problem now.
I make these statements because both Swipe for Facebook, Chrome Brtowser and Amazon use html wrapper/webview, but i can be wrong.
I just received the instruction to update webview from the amazon support.
Well ... I oped out the beta program, reinstalled webview and now I am fine
I have read your post to late. But you are mentioning webview too, so I think it is all about webview. Do you use the beta too?
Conclusion for me:
WebView Beta was the culprit. Reinstalling the stable fixed it for me.

Fixing it again?
I think I will stay with stable
It happens with beta chrome and webview. If an item is selected it will scroll back to that item. It has to stay in the viewport. Just deselect the item to fix it.
