Wallet / Folio case that supports wireless charging? - Google Pixel 3 Accessories

My wife prefers a wallet / folio style case for her phones however we're struggling to locate one [preferably stocked in the UK] that really supports wireless charging - I've seen a number on Amazon with conflicting user reviews mentioning wireless charging so nothing concrete.
I picked up a couple of cheap ones to get her started however they seem to interfere with the Pixel 3 wireless charging link when on the Stand - it charges initially then drops shortly after.
(I've cross-tested both our Pixel 3s against both stands with and without the case, and it's definitely the case causing the issue).
So is anyone using one that works consistently? I'm willing to ship in if not stocked in the UK, so any recommendations based on personal experience would be appreciated.
TIA.

I have just received a Snakehive case. I am very pleased with it.
I do NOT have the Google wireless charger but an old Chinese Qi one.
The Pixel 3 DOES charge when in this wallet case, but you have to be careful with placement.
Also, I would always have the case OPEN to avoid phone getting hot.

Thanks I'll look into it.
The phone did charge initially - indicating placement was correct but would drop shortly after the screen went off (on a 1 minute screen setting). The case in use is a magnetic closure which I suspect is the issue.

Snakehive is also a magnetic case, but phone charges up to 100% (albeit somewhat slowly as it is a cheapo Qi charger). As mentioned case kept OPEN so magnet is hanging to the side. Interesting to see what Google wireless charger will do... Expensive!

Unfortunately the Snakehive case exhibits the same behaviour with the Pixel Stand.
However my wife likes the case a lot, so is going to keep using it and just leave the phone caseless on the stand at night to charge.
Either way, my work here is done ?

One more thought... the phone actually gets pretty WARM during fast charge - especially in any wallet case.
This would undoubtedly be bad for the longevity of the battery - so I would recommend leaving the front flap open whilst charging by any means - wired/wireless, in order to keep temperature of battery at a minimum.

CodeMonkey have you an update? Did your wife get a Snakehive case and the OFFICIAL Google Pixel wireless charging stand? What is the verdict on this combination?

As I posted above. Doesn't work with the Pixel Stand (probably a side effect of the stand's orientation).

Wireless Charging Questions.

Been thinking of getting a Wireless Charger for my N5 but I have a very important question. Will they work through a case? I use a case on my phone and there is absolutely no value to a wireless charger if I am going to have to remove my case to use it. So I am wondering if you can place it atop the charge station while in a TPU or plastic case and still get a charge? I would also like to know how much slower Wireless Charging is than regular AC charging? Thank you.

Yes, wireless chargers work with a case. I've used the LG WCP-700 wireless charger with my Nexus 4 flawlessly with countless cases on the Nexus 4. I fully expect the results to be the same with the Nexus 5. Wireless chargers are very convenient and work great. Just make sure to get a reputable one and don't cheap out on a $20 eBay one.
i also heard that once ur phone is fully charged..the wireless charger will stop charging
I know the LG one stops charging when full. It also trickle charges so if your phone or tablet falls below a 95% charge it starts charging it again till full, then stops again.
All "Qi" standard chargers will work with the N5 with varying degrees of success. They all will generally charge up to a distance of ~3-4mm from coil to coil so they will usually charge thru cases with no problem although there may be a slight degradation in charge rate. I have used several different Qi chargers - the Google Orb, the Owlpad car charger, the LG WCP 300 and the Metrans MWT03. They all charged my N4 'case on' with no trouble although the N4 did seem to charge slightly quicker without the case on. I even mounted the Metrans inside of my desk just under the laminate surface and it charged the N4 fine thru the laminate and TPU case. The Orb was easily the best of lot and charged the fastest, the Owlpad was probably the worst but it was used while driving with the phone generally being used for GPS, music streaming etc and under those conditions, it barely could maintain charge with screen on. With the phone off, it charged fine.
I just got my N5 today and tried it with all of my chargers and they all worked fine, if anything the N5 is less picky than the N4 about placement.

I bought the owlpad for my N4 and the N5 doesn't play well with my N4 Owlpad. The coils are not aligned and there is little wiggle room in the phone holder. Owlpad does make a N5 version (or a $29 conversion kit to make the N4 Owlpad into a N5 charger). Overall, I wouldn't recommend wireless charging for a car dock. Wireless chargers can't charge at the same rate as a cable and if you, like me, put heavy use on your phone while driving (GPS, bluetooth, music streaming, etc), the charger at best will barely maintain charge and often will lose charge. The beauty of wireless charging is being able to drop your phone at home or office and have it always 'topping off' without bothering to hook up a cable. If you put heavy use on your phone in the car, I recommend direct cable. For the home or office, I definitely recommend wireless. Since going wireless with my N4, my phone seems always fully charged when I leave home or work.

Yes, they will work though cases. I had a Diztronic on my N4 and it worked great. The charging is a bit slower but rapid charging isn't the point of the wireless chargers.
Has anyone tried the N5 on the WCP400 (the google Orb) yet? I will tonight but am curious (and impatient) while I'm here at work.
EDIT: someone has; here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513200

So we have the easy answer here ("yes wireless charging works with a case") but no careful studies on charge rates.
The OP also asked how wireless charging rates compare to wired charging.
I would also like to know if and how much using a case for wireless charging affects the charge rate? I use the Google charger (I would post a working link but the XDA site is being *****y about my lack of participation) ( .. play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_Wireless_Charger?id=nexus_wireless_charger ) which also includes a permanent magnet to help align the Nexus 5 to the charger. This is important because if the charging coils are not well aligned charging doesn't work at all and there is much less than a centimeter of margin. Using a case definitely weakens the alignment field because without a case the phone "snaps" to the correct position, whereas with a case you have to feel the alignment field and for the most part position the phone over the charger manually.
We know the distance between the phone and charger coils affects energy transfer (inverse square law for fields), but perhaps wireless chargers automatically adjust the strength of the charging field based on charging amperage or feedback from the phone to optimize charge rates? This would help mitigate the effect of a case but there would still be larger distances at which the field cannot optimally charge the phone. What are these distances, and do some chargers vary the charging field strength based on any kind of feedback?

[Q] Tough Case & Wireless charger

OK I wanting a tough case, something on the lines of the "Otterbox Defender" or "Ballistic Tough Jacket" (open to other suggestions as well, so feel free to suggest some others) but I’m also wanting to match this with some kind of wireless charger, from my current reading the LG one i think model is WCD-100 only has a single coil and so phone has to sit in a perfect place, also with a single coil I’m wondering if the charge will even get through, but i have also read the standard QI ones have a triple coil and do not require phone to be in perfect place for charging, and i'm also wondering if triple coil will be better at getting though the tough case, I have ruled out metal backed tough cases as i presume not current would get through, I need my stand to be in black, White just would not go on my desk.
I am a bit of a newbie here so please bear with me but welcome any and all feedback and suggestions.

There is a user on Google+ that added a wireless charging sticker to the inside of his Zerolemon case. I haven't seen pictures of how he did it, but he says wireless charging and NFC both work.

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry for the delay in getting back to you but i have been waiting for my Nokia DT-910 to come through (which it did today) and sorry to say it would not work with my phone, I have the UK version of the phone which has wireless built in but when Otterbox was on it would only charge on slow, but when i took the whole case if it done fast charge with no issues, so i'll knock the Nokia on the head and keep looking for another charger that may be suitable.

Well i have been using the Otterbox Defender for a while now and cannot find a single charger that works 100%, best i have found is something called "Tylt Vu" and that only charges in landscape format and has to be 100% spot on inplace to fast scharge so i'm looking at getting a new case that is not so think, would be nice if LG done a list of cases that would work with wireless chargers.

[Q] Qi receiver personal experiences?

If you have bought and used a Qi receiver in your s3 for more then a week I want to hear about it.
I would like your replies to include pics of it installed in your phone. Hopeful that will keep this thread shill free.
Are they all the same level of crap?
Did yours bulge the back so bad it cracked?
Did it heat up the phone more then gaming?
Did they block NFC?
Is it slower/faster then usb?
I'm actually kinda temped to buy one of the S5 ones that are advertised as "paper thin" and modify it to fit. Some of them have pics of callipers measuring them and they look damn thin. None of the S3 ones currently on amazon or eBay look like something that won't burst into flames :/

Sorry I don't have pics. I have used one for the last year. It's been a bit of hit n miss. The quality seems to be ok as far as I can tell visually and I had bought the cheapest one I could find. I haven't had any problems with cracking of the case but it does bulge ever so slightly and any 3rd party case of tried with it doesn't have any problems with fit. The receiver is about credit card thickness. It does not block nfc on my phone. It is very much slower to charge than with regular usb, but it will charge my phone completely overnight. The problem I have with it just recently is that it doesn't consistently charge. It "loses" connection randomly. I have made sure that the contacts stay connected but still the problem persists. I'm not sure if it's hardware or software related at this point but it did use to work consistently. Also it may be the charging pad that is going funky and not the receiver itself. I have ordered a new and different charging pad that should arrive this week and I'll have a better idea of what's going on when I get it. Hope that helps a bit.
I have been using one for about two weeks now, no bulges, it overheats a bit, but I am using cm12 and boeffla kernel and have oc'ed current to 950 for faster charge so thats on me, its faster than usb atm, but a bit slower than normal charger. Didnt understand what you meant with ''blocks nfc''
The NFC coil is on the back of the battery.
These Qi stickers glue to the battery. It stands to reason one coil over the other might interfere.
Which is why I asked if you still have NFC with one installed.
I've had my S3 for a couple months now; got it as a freedompop refurb during a good sale. Came with the usb port loose and was hard to get it to charge, so I went on ebay and got a cheap qi charger (came with coil and charge plate). It was supposedly a 1000ma charging coil, though it does charge pretty fast. The charging base does heat up a bit while charging, and will heat up the phone just by proximity, but so far nothing too serious.
I don't use NFC for anything so I have no idea if it's impacted at all. There's probably other qi charging topics here with answers.
The coil barely made a dent in the backplate plastic. It is slightly visible, but it didn't impact the phone fitting in a few of the cases my friends had. I settled on a nice leather folding case that also worked as a landscape-stand.
It might be just the quality of the charge plate or the coil I received that's making this one little problem: if the phone is directly on the base (bare-plastic back to charge plate), it likes to blink in and out of charging constantly. If there's a little space though, it'll steadily charge and not blink (or very rarely blink). The gap I found to work the best is roughly the phone's normal thickness. I used a piece of cardboard and a couple gift cards to get there until I got the folding case. Folding the front over to the back provided enough space for steady charging on its own. Again, it's probably the china quality, but at least it's working well.

Great idea on the spacing! Mine does basically the same thing. Never thought of moving it farther away. Sweet! But you might want to be careful if you're using gift cards that haven't been redeemed. I think, not positive, that it might ruin the magnetic strips on them.

Wireless charging

Could anybody recomend a good wireless charging receiver and case combo that work well together? I've tried to slide several business cards under Spigen Rugged Armor to imitate a real receiver (probably receiver is actually thinner than two cards). The case pops up showing an ugly hump.
Spigen Thin Fit has an indent specifically for a wireless charging receiver... It also doesn't cover top/bottom of the phone so the receiver ribbon and plug fits perfectly. I have one and it works great(w/short version receiver) . Another is the Pitaka real cf MagCase. Both offer decent protection, if you need a heavy duty case I'm not sure which work

You can. Search for "wireless charging receiver". The question is how to hide it under a case. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of "Spigen Thin Fit".
I've tried and returned several wireless charging receivers and the only one that actually worked well was Cusorient: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0713ST47Z
The other receivers would only charge anywhere from 50-250 mA but this one has been averaging from 750-1000 mA and puts a smile on my face. There are times I have seen it charge 500 mA or less but not often. I'm happy I finally found one that works well because I'm heavily invested in wireless chargers from having previously owned a Nexus 6. I even bought a spare charging receiver in case I ever screw up the ribbon cable. My case on my phone is a Spigen Thin Fit and while I can tell it's there, it's not a huge ugly bump and the case still fits properly.

That little indent is actually for a metal plate that goes with their magnet mounting system. It even says what it is for on the case when you get it. Now, sure you can probably use it for wireless charging receivers too, just trying to prevent the spread of misinformation

Wow. That's terrible. If that's the best we can expect to get with these receivers, I give up on getting wireless charging on this phone. Luckily, now that Apple added Qi to the iPhone 8, Google basically has to in the upcoming Pixel.
https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-Google-Wallet-Design-Holder/dp/B07474KKY2
I think using this case paired with a QI receiver would be the best bet right now. You could put a receiver in the wallet section, create a small recess for the ribbon and have a great solution.
Using cases seems to be hit or miss and taping the thing to the back of my $800 phone just aint gonna happen.
Google really biffed on this one, an expensive phone like this should have every feature available plus some. Or at least accessories to add them. I love the pixel, but I love wireless charging too. I missed it ever since my Nexus 5. I have not had a phone with it since, but definitely would like to see it return to a Google Device.

I looked at that one but my concern is the receiver being right against the finish of the phone and if it gets hot would it cause any damage? I've been looking for a case with the TPU then outer shell I can put the receiver between. Have you noticed anything with the finish/coating being damaged?

I've taken the case off often for general cleaning or from necessity of needing my USB port for one reason or another and I have not noticed any sort of damage to the phone or case surface at all.

I have that wireless receiver on my pixel 2 XL. It charges up alright but slow by comparison. I have a Satechi inline usb-c power meter and connecting in between the receiver and the phone, it's showing the receiver supplying around 750-800mA. Of course this may vary with the wireless charger, but that's what I'm seeing. I would estimate it charges about 30-40% as fast as a wired charger.
I'm using this with a Spigen Rugged Armour case and find that it made quite a bump on the back. I have sanded some of the inner part of the case away to relieve this with a Dremel and it's an improvement. Why they don't make cases with these cutouts or a removable panel to accommodate a wireless receiver I have no idea.
Actually, I wonder if there was any interest in me machining these cases to order. I could make a fixture to allow me to rout out these cases to accept a wireless charging receiver.

It does ok, does better with a fast wireless charging base. About 5-10% per hour with my old wireless chargers vs 15-20% per hour with a generic fast wireless charger.

I picked up a Samsung Convertible pad from Amazon for $29. It was a Amazon Store return and was marked as like new. There wasn't a mark on it and still had the protective plastic film on it. I love it and it charges fine through my Otterbox case. It may be worth looking at the pre-owned original chargers that Amazon sells.
I got the official charger for S9/S9+ from Samsung (Wireless Qi Fast Charge Standing Samsung EP-N5100) and it's great. It has a cooler included in case of overheating, while charging (fast or not, the phone will get hotter than charging through cable). Phone will charge slower than doing it through cable (not by much), due to some part of the energy that it's transformed into heat, so the cooler is a good idea.
I fail to see the difference between this and the S8/S8+ and S7/S7 Edge Qi chargers.
I use the Anker Fast Wireless charger downstairs for when I want a quick top up. It works great with the S9 - low profile and 100% reliable. http://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KJL4XNY/
On my bedside table I have an Elephas wireless charging stand - this one charges at normal speed, better for an overnight charge.
I love wireless charging and really missed it when I have a Pixel 2. It was one reason I moved to the S9.
