Mate 20 X: Notification issues on international version? - Huawei Mate 20 X Questions & Answers

So, I posted on here a few days ago in relation to some notification issues I was having on my Chinese Huawei Mate 20 X, long story short, I WAS receiving notifications perfectly fine when the phone was on Wi-Fi, but the second I left the house and ran the phone on mobile data, I either got long delays in notifications or in some cases not actually get them at all, applications affected were Facebook, Messenger, Reddit, Gmail and my banking app.
I was also having connectivity issues with Gboard and voice typing with Google. I received quite a few replies but unfortunately none of the advice work and as a result, I had to send the phone back.
The phones seller advised me of the international version of this phone, and suggested that I perhaps give that a go, I have so far messaged three sellers, and every single one of them has told me that I shouldn't experience any notification issues on the global version, even given that it runs the exact same version of EMUI as the Chinese version.
Can anyone on here verify this?
I don't really want to have to spend another $1,000 and wait several weeks just to have it turn up and go through the exact same problems I had with the Chinese version.

I don't know why people have notification problems I've had none on Chinese model I'm in UK on three network if that makes a difference or not ?

I have INT version, I got from FunkyHuawei, and I have no notification issues at all.

No notifications problems here on EVR-L29.

I have the Chinese version 8/256 and no notification issues whatsoever.

Did you disabled the app from running in the background or something like that?
Once I disabled certain apps like Wechat for example, all it's notifications will ceased.

I have notification issues WHILE CONNECTED TO WIFI WHEN SCREEN IS OFF.

Well if you disable the app from running in the back ground, how would you expect to get notifications? You disabled it from doing so.....Am I missing something here?

That's what I'm talking about. Maybe the op disabled it from running in the background and hence there's no notification.

Please try the following methods:
1)Make sure the SIM card is inserted. Setttings---Battery---- Click the gear button on the upper right corner--- switch on “Stay connected when device sleeps”.
2) Settings---Notifications----More notification settings---turn off "Smart notifications"

Go into settings - battery - more battery settings and toggle on the option that says "stay connected when device sleeps". This fixed all my delayed notifications on Gmail and WhatsApp.
I have the 8/256GB Chinese version and this was driving me crazy until someone here on XDA mentioned this and it fixed all the problems I was having.

Any app killed in the recent apps menu (hitting the trash can) will close all apps and will not run in the background, regardless which version you are running. You can see this by hitting the trash can to clear the apps, and then go to settings apps and choose the app and you will see force stop is grayed out cause the app no longer is running.
Trying to find the protected app location or policy so you can add apps to prevent them from being closed down.

I have the same issue with my China-bought Mate 20 (not X tho). Notifications for most apps (especially Chinese apps like Wechat, ...) work without problems, but certain apps don't show any notifications at all. These include: Splitwise, Couchsurfing, and maybe a few others. This is not a VPN issue since both Splitwise and Couchsurfing work in China without VPN. As soon as I open the apps manually, the updates come through. Before the Mate 20, I had a OnePlus 3, also bought in China, and both apps and their notifications worked without a flaw. So this is definitely a Huawei issue.
Battery optimization is turned off for both apps, they're set to manual with all options enabled (auto launch, etc).

&
3) apps -> app Launch -> ( click on specific applications ) manage all manually ( all 3 options ) for selected applications.
4) open the application and leave it running on the background by locking the app in the background.
I have done all the 4 above steps.
hi, have done the same for past few days but only certain applications show the notifications like WhatsApp /Facebook/youtube/ google./instagram
but still,
1) I am not able to figure out the notifications for Line / Discord / all the games installed in the device.
2) after long hours of non-activity ( say 6 hours ) the applications on the background once again closes automatically ( even after doing the 3 & 4 th points mentioned above )
3) Apps -> default apps ->assistance & voice input -> ( google automatically logs out for some reason not sure why ) even tho i have removed the default Huawei app, I am not able to get the G-assistant as default.
it works for sometime and after some time, the option goes to default as "none" and I have to choose it once again back.
( yes I have done the 3rd point run manually for google assistant )
4) Gdrive -> My drive -> backups -> backup settings -> all the application data is showing as waiting for backup ( except the contacts )
not sure how to fix it - all options are greyed out.
5) Always on display don't show the notification icons - I tried 3rd party " amoled "but battery consuming - ( I will wait for the update in Original built-in software )
6) Screen recorder able to record, ( in-app settings I have enabled all the permission, microphone etc ) but when I click on the screen recorder
by default, the application microphone is greyed out and not able to switch it on.
7) for google maps history to work, I have to root the device and rename folders as per this thread ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-x/how-to/al00-location-history-sharing-timeline-t3887627 )
but I haven't rooted yet. awaiting for proper method for rooting.
Above are the issues in My device ( EVER-AL00 Chinese Rom 8GB/256GB variant - non-rooted)
I have been trying to resolve the issue... but pending ones are the above which I need some help on. ( anyone knows how to fix the above let me know )
But the device is still awesome. until the above issues are fixed I will be using my old device ( mi - max 2 ) along the side.

[Q] Facebook push notification

Hi,
I used to have facebook push notification on my Galaxy S.
However, since around 1.5 weeks back - I rarely get this notification.
Facebook notification refresh setting is already set to every 30 minutes (but why is this necessary? Since it should be a "pushed" notification, isn't it?)
I've done plenty of things on the phone in the past 2 weeks (one of them is factory wipe); so I can't put my finger on when is the last time the push notification work.
Anyone got any clue?
Actually i noticed i havent been getting notifications either.
On 2.2.1 JPY.
same for me!! weird!!

I don't think I've ever had the facility to have the notifcations pushed. It probably works out in your best interests as it will probably save you more battery life and data in the long run

I think the opposite actually.
If it's not "pushed", then the apps in your phone will try to connect at certain interval to check if there's latest records.
If my understand is correct, in the past, facebook application for android, works by using the 'refresh interval'. But in Dec, the "pushed notification" is added into this apps

I used 2.2.1 and had pushed notification. My guess is that this happen only in Jan, and probably after I did the X'mas version Darky's ROM.
Do you guys think this pushed notification works based on your phone "product code" ? Flashing ROM is known to change your Product CODE.. (I think mine was changed to XOR, XEE, XSO before.. )

Yeah the app itself has settings for regular updates but I hadn't noticed a push setting previously. Can only assume FB pulled it for some reason because the ROM's themselves don't really touch any third party .apks.
Guys..
I got "pushed' notification now; but only for messages so far.
This is what I did in facebook notification settings..
Untick all Notifications (e.g. messages, friend requests, event invites) and also untick the notifications. Also set the Refresh interval to - NEVER
get out from that notification setting page.
Get back in again and this time around, ticked all notifications back .. but keep the Refresh interval to NEVER.
Using push notificatiion, so don't need to ask the Facebook apps to "poll" the servers for latest data.
once again, i'm on 2.2.1 using Darky's ROM V8.0 with latest SpeedMod Kernel (dated 13th Jan 2011).
I wasn't getting any notifications pushed either and i read somewhere (can't remember where) that you can fix it by resetting the push notifications thing (i think its called c2dm).
One way of doing this is by going into Settings > Applications > Facebook > Clear Data
Then open up facebook, enter your details and it should work (it worked for me)
sounds like when I did change the notification setting, that have the some effect as clear the data and create a new one.
got the same prob also since last two weeks.. flash every rom from stock to custom.. from 2.1 to 2.2 based.. and finally on darky 8.1.. still push notification for facebook app not popping up anymore.. but it works fine before.. can someone identify what is the source of this problem?..
Same problem here. Any ideas?
I actually do not have this problem BUT.... I can´t hear any pop sound when someone sends me a message on FaceBook....
I have gone into settings and enabled sound and everything there but I never hear any sound when I get a message
Any way to fix that?... would be SUPER sweet

Push notifications work via push service which is dependent upon "Android ID", not product code, I know that because I had problems with Kik Messenger which works with push notifications. People at Kik explained that push service is connected with unique Android ID of your device and if it changes, you will probably have problems with notifications. Android ID changes if you, for example, flash custom ROM. I was lucky enough to create complete nandroid backup when I first bought the phone. Kik didn't work properly on Darky's (or any other custom rom) so what I did was: restored my original ROM, installed Android ID changer from market, wrote down my ID, flashed Darky's again, installed Android ID changer again and restored my original ID.
Now push service works like a charm
Hope it helps...

on facebook desktop website, in the top right corner click "account" > "Account settings" > "mobile" (a tab).
The sms contains the content of the notification (altho can be cut short if too long) and depending on the context, a url to the mobile website.
EDIT: oops, looks like iceland isn't on the dropdown list... (probably no carriers in your country support the function ) Many other countries do though :S
I use F plus (flow) now.
Might not be push, but at least I get them now, which is more than the facebook app did ever did.
Sent from my Captivate.
No matter what settings I use on facebook they always revert to default after not using the app for a while.
Any ideas?
anyone find a solution to this yet? sorry for bumping a old thread but it's driving me nuts not being able to check notifications on facebook!

apps with live tiles crashing...

I've noticed lately that any app I download that has a live tile crashes when I try to run it. Any other app runs fine. I was curious that this might be a result of the 15 push app limit. So, I went thru all my apps that have live tiles, removed them from my start screen, and unchecked "live tile," "push notification" or whatever option they had. This did not fix the problem, even after a reboot. If i re-pin one of the old apps and enable live tile, they work just fine.
I'm wondering this is just a glitch with my phone, or whether wp7 doesn't have the ability to release the "hold" that an app has on one of the 15 available channels. Is anyone having this same experience?
Did you ever find a resolution for this other than a hard rest? I am experiencing the same problem and have also tried disabling all my notification apps. Im debating weather I should wait till NoDo and see if it fixes the problem before I hard reset.
On another note, is there any way or do any of my games data get saved when hard resetting? I really dont want to loose that saved data.
Thanks.

It's quite possible that the installed apps aren't handling the disabling of notifications correctly and clearing the channel. So if they've already registered a channel, they'll still count towards the 15.
Try uninstalling one of them, and check if that helps.
Incidentally, the apps shouldn't crash when they can't register a channel, they should catch the error and let you know. Let the developer know what's happening so they can fix it (don't do it via a review, try emailing them).

It definately seems like the apps are not releasing the channel properly. Is there any way to go into the registry and manually removed them? Also I have removed several of the apps that had Live Tilese enabled then disabled but I still cannot enable Live Tiles in new apps without receiving an error.
Edit: I went through and removed several other apps including one in which I was having issues on and off with live tiles. After uninstalling that app Live Tiles seems to be working on all my other apps. I'm not sure if the problem was the specific app or not but the issue appears to be cleared up. Thanks dgaust for the advise.
guys, i have 4 email live tile, HTC, Mo tweet, and i do not have any issues, i am using HD7.
It's not a problem with your phone, it's a problem in the app. The SDK launchs a exception when you are over 15. Write to the developper to fix this problem

The problem I as having was that I wasnt over the 15 limit, I was at something closer to 5-10 but some of my previous apps apparently had not removed themselves from the list when I disabled them.

Rebrand honor7x from chinese model

I bought Honor7x, build number ( BND-AL10C00B123) , two days past from a Chinese online shopping , I have the problem of not getting push notifications of calls and messages of any communication apps like FB messanger , Whstsapp , Viber and Wire , I tried to activate the full permission of all these apps but no change , also I have problems in changing some options like " force allow apps on external storage " , can you please guide me to solve this problem?
Thank you.
have you checked that your applications are listed under 'settings - battery - close apps' as 'dont close'?
Otherwise every time your screen locks those apps will be closed and not receive notifications I imagine...

Galaxy Watch notifications for what's app

Hi Everyone,
Requesting some help for an issue that I am facing with my galaxy watch. Not able to receive ONLY what's app notifications on the watch. All other app notifications work fine ( Messages, emails, weather or any other app that gives me notifications ) works good.
1. Looked for all settings related to notifications on the phone and watch. All look fine unless I have missed out something important related to whats app.
2. Reset the gear watch but that didn't help either
3. Uninstalled and reinstalled what's app just to make sure but that didn't work too.
Running out of ideas and looking for suggestion please.
I expect you have checked the Galaxy Wearable settings menu entry notifications list of apps and found (or not found) the What's app ?

Hi,
Yes, I have selected all apps in notifications and still same issue. I just also noticed that it doesn't work for Facebook notifications too, not too sure if that helps but thought of mentioning it. I have tried all settings possible on the watch and the phone, reset the watch but unfortunately it didn't work.
Working notifications :- Messages, Emails, weather, calls, alarms
Non working :- Facebook, whats app and some other 3rd party apps. I understand that some 3rd party apps may not have native support but ya, thats my current status.
Thank you for trying to help and please suggest if any other idea.

I assume that you do get notifications on your phone for the apps in question - otherwise, you have to adjust the setting for those.

Hi,
I had enabled them on the phone but the same issue. Thank you for your time though. Something completely unexpected at least for me that helped me resolve the issue and frankly I don't understand how. So here is how it worked, I am currently travelling and purchased a SIM that I inserted in the primary slot of my phone and the default SIM I always use is in the secondary. I swapped and that resolved my issue. I don't even know if that is related and I should have known about it but thankfully helped me end my worries and some ridiculous amount of time I spent resolving it.
Thank you again. You have a good one !

Question How to make Facebook notifications work on my Pixel 6 Pro?

I have got the phone 2 weeks ago and I really like it. Everything seems to be working just fine except for the push notifications for the Facebook. Please, don't tell me to uninstall it - I use it for business and also to keep in touch with my family and friends - so telling me not to use it is not helpful. However if there is something you can help me with, I would really appreciate it. Here are some details to make it easier for investigation.
Android version: 12
Security update: 5 November 2021
Facebook version: 348.0.0.39.118
- push notifications are allowed within Facebook (please, see attached screenshot)
- Facebook notifications are allowed on Android system wise (please see attached screenshot)
- Facebook Battery usage set to Unrestricted (please see attached screenshot)
What I have tried so far?
- delete cache, storage, the app and re-install
- pause notifications for 15 minutes and allow again
How do I know it issue on Android?
- I have the same issue on every Android device (tested on Samsung and OnePlus devices, same result)
- everything works just fine on iOS - push notifications are coming on my iPhone 13 Pro and on my iPad
What else am I missing? What can change or setup differently? I would really like to use Pixel as my primary device but this is a major blocker for me. Reaching out to Facebook is pretty much impossible. I am offering up to 50 USD (paying over PayPal) to the person who can help me figure this out for once and for all. I have been asking all around the internet and no-one can help me. If I can't sort it out here, I don't think I can anywhere else.

Alright, well let's check the other basics first.
You have
a) allowed push notifications for Facebook and set Battery usage for Facebook as unrestricted
how about
b) check Background Process Limit (Developer options)
c) check Standby Apps (Developer Options again, scroll down to Apps) and tell me which state your app is in regularly (a messenger app should be at WORKING_SET/ACTIVE even when you "close" it in app drawer/home screen)
d) check your power saver & DnD settings (Do not Disturb can delay notifications)
e) triple check your internet connection - are you using a VPN, are all other apps working as intended with immediate notifications? Is it maybe a "not phone problem"?
f) do you have adaptive battery activated? Try deactivating it, AB can put apps to sleep in order to preserve battery life. Restart phone after making these changes.
e) did you download Pikmin Bloom? (not kidding here, I've seen people report Android 12 notification problems, and after deleting that app it began to work again)
E1) Since it has been reported that a single app can cause havoc, it might be possible that some third-party app is causing these issues. It might be hard to narrow down, but if it truly bothers you, I'd suggest to manually place ALL other non-Google apps to battery -> restricted, to find out if that is the problem. If it fixes your issues, you can slowly narrow it down, by gradually allowing battery usage for other apps again.
Since you did not use the word root once, I assume you are not rooted? Since with root access we could force the Heartbeat Intervals to a ridiculously low number (couple seconds), to see if it's truly a Pixel/software problem.
It might be possible that your problem is caused by Androids DOZE function. It doesn't always work "properly" - there is an internal priority list, and according to that list apps get dozed or are allowed to "call home".
A non-root solution to this (IF it's a doze problem) would be to manually deactivate Doze with ADB (and then check your app - if your problem is fixed then, it's a DOZE/whitelist problem)
There is a thread about this here
Android: completely disabling deviceidle ("Doze") in Android M?

Hey there XDA! I'm here to show off a new Android app I've published that I think a certain audience may find useful. Ever heard of ADB? If not, you likely won't need this app. But for those of you who have used or encountered ADB in the past...
forum.xda-developers.com
in order to get a more permanent DOZE disabling solution. Even though this will cause your phone to burn faster through battery. If it's a general Android / Android 12 issue, I can't see any other non-root solutions though.
With root, you could easily execute the script/ADB commands after each reboot. But then again, there should be at least one alternative non-root solution out there.
I'll start from the end - my phone is not rooted. I was tempted, but decided not to do so. Now to the questions above:
b) Background Process Limit is set to: Standard limit, I did not change that - should I?
c) Facebook is shown as EXEMPTED (and it is greyed out, I can't change it), Messenger is ACTIVE
d) Power Save is always OFF in my case
e) connection is fine, 100%, I am not using VPN, only local with AdGuard, but the same behavior was without it
f) tried that, did not help - on Samsung, OnePlus and here, too
Not aware of Pikmin Bloom - no idea what is it, so no.
Thanks for coming back to me, I appreciate it.

You shouldn't have to root your phone to get notifications to work. But Morgrain has included everything and more that I would suggest.
A few things: So notifications for this specific Facebook Account work on other Android devices with the same Google Account?
Do all other notifications work? WhatsApp, GMail etc?
Create a new user (Android Settings, System, User) and create a dummy Gmail Account during setup (important to create a new account since I've seen this also resolve notification issues with GMail and a few other apps, its rare but worth a try, and you can delete the Gmail account after the test, limit the information you input and put a nickname/fake info in). Stay logged into this new Google Account on your Pixel during the testing period (whatever it is 30mins, 1hr etc) because notifications won't come in otherwise. Make sure battery saver isn't on, and give Facebook/Messenger apps Unrestricted battery usage along with enabling all permissions under "App Permissions" and under "App Info" enable anything available: Mobile Data & Wifi Unrestricted background data/usage (2 options), Battery: Unrestricted, and under the Advanced section, some apps have 2 or 3 options such as "Modify System" etc - enable all of those also. Force Stop, then open the app to make sure it is running (check to make sure it is running in Developer Options, Running Services). These suggestions can also be tried on your current installation.
Can you maybe try removing the FB app, reinstall and create a new temporary FB Account or even try logging in with a different one - any changes?
The last thing I would do is backup your phone and manually the data for each app (Signal, WhatsApp etc) and force 2 or 3 manual backups using Google Backup (Android Settings, System, Backup), just to make sure everything is backed up. And using an app like SMS Backup Restore by SyncTech, to ensure Calls/SMS are backed up again. Copy all folders to a computer. Then do a factory reset, and during the setup, pick "don't have old phone" then "restore from cloud" - you will be given 5 or 6 options, only pick SMS/MMS and Calls. Then install Facebook and test it. This has worked in the past for notification issues.

No, specific Facebook Account does not work on any Android device at all. It only works on iOS devices. Without any specific settings. I just login to my account and push notifications on iOS are working. No matter what I do on Android - any device - it does not work. And I am not sure if this is account issue or platform issue. But I am inclined to platform issue as I do not understand why would it work on iOS without any problems.
Hello!
A lot of good suggestions here.
I don't have much input so I apologize - I just wanted to say I have no issues receiving Facebook Messenger notifications. I'm on sq1d.211205.017 (December - manually flashed and rooted). I have notifications for Facebook itself turned off, so I can't report there. I didn't have to change any settings at all for Facebook Messenger to work correctly. I also don't use Messenger very much, but once in a while and I just received a Messenger chat the other day.
You could try manually installing the December update, although I'd probably wait for the late January update instead.
I like @Alekos' suggestion of creating a new account on the phone and trying to use the same Facebook account there, without installing any different/additional apps.
In an extreme measure, you could try a factory reset, don't restore anything from Google Backup, and only install Facebook & Messenger, and wait long enough to be able to tell if both are working satisfactorily.
If working, then after that you would have to install further apps in small groups (I would do in the order of the most critical apps that you need), then wait long enough again to test. This has been my standard operating procedure whenever I have weird problems that I just can't solve. Sometimes, I didn't get a solution this way - the problem was common with Samsung's version of Android, but all other times I eventually found the problem in an app that caused issues.

Messenger is working just fine for me. It has been on every Android device.
As for November/December update - I am not sure this is the culprit. Because as mentioned above it was not working on any prior Android devices either regardless of the Android version.
This is the only application I am experiencing issues with.

I apologize, I missed those things. Argh, very strange indeed. That just sucks.
My gut feeling is it's a Facebook setting that's being restored only on Android. I haven't used iOS, so I can only guess, but I know sometimes iOS and Android versions of the same app are different enough, and sometimes going through Facebook's available settings is daunting.
I know the app has a search function for its settings now, but the Notifications setting is obvious enough. If you've already mentioned looking through this, please forgive me:
3-line (pancake) menu
Scroll to the last page of junk
Settings & Privacy
Settings
Notifications
Micro-manage each and every type of category of Facebook notifications
Yeah, man. It's driving me crazy. I can't seem to find the issue for almost 2 years, insane.

I just edited my post above this reply. I might not have suggested anything you haven't already tried, but take a look. I feel your pain, as Google Reminders used to work great for me, but for the last two years, they do everything but actually remind me.
I have set those to Push - all that are relevant to me. I have posted it on screenshot in my 1st post. But thanks for trying, man. I really appreciate it.

Ah yes. I really should wake up before I answer posts. Technology! Good luck, I hope you find the solution.
Will you consider a workaround of changing from Push to something EMail or SMS?

so wait, no facebook account works at all on any android device you've used? That's really odd. A billion FB users!
Can you just try this: Create a new User (it's really easy) and a new throw-away Google Account (easy also) and a new FB account just to test? it will take maybe 5 mins. this will help in narrowing it down (if it does work).
I have tried that. I have created once a dummy account for Fb and used with my present Google Account - no issues at all.
Everything I tried looks like it's Fb account related and specifically on Android. I don't know how to solve it.

I know it's not what you're looking for, and you shouldn't have to do - or maybe that is what you do already, just had to ask.
I mean, I could, but it is not as convenient, not to mention I am more interested into WHY it is not working on Android and no issues on iOS. Can't get my head around this.

Me neither. Problems like this where nothing seems to solve drive me nuts. I may take a screenshot of my Facebook notification settings, set them all to push, and see what happens. I expect I know what'll happen.
Edit: Gotta love the Pixel screenshot "Capture more" button.
Just wondering, have you uninstalled rebooted, and re-installed? Or are you just copying over the apps/data? I had the same issue with Aqua mail, until I uninstalled, rebooted, and re-installed

Same happens when I unbox the phone and start fresh install right out of the box. Or if I install, update to latest version, restart and install all over again. Result is always the same.
This is a Facebook/android issue, I've been dealing with it for 2 or 3 years now across multiple devices.
