If you own the phone and there's no balance why can't Verizon unlock it so that I can unlock the bootloader? I have a Tmobile Oneplus 6t as well and I purchased it outright and the TMobile Rep unlocked it for me. Has anyone ever called Verizon to unlock the Pixel?
I've used my pixel on T-Mobile without any issues.

That is true I am also using the Verizon variante on TMobile but what I'm saying is my TMobile OnePlus 6t came with a greyed out OEM Unlock option. So I called TMobile and told them I want the phone unlocked and they did it. I just had to factory reset the phone and the option was no longer greyed out. So I'm wondering why can't Verizon do the same for the Pixel? I mean I do own the phone out right no finance.
Verizon will not allow the bootloader unlock and I highly doubt any devs are looking into it either.

That's stupid specially if I own the phone, it's like they still have control over it even though I own it. I guess that's what I get for being impatient and rushing to get the Pixel instead ordering it from Google and waiting on the shipping
I'm in the same boat but to be honest the whole point of a pixel in my opinion is to get a pure Google experience.. I don't have a valid reason to root to be honest. Also my work apps won't work on a rooted phone so might as well be bootloader locked
As I'm in Ireland and bought the 3xl while on a work trip on launch day I'm tempted to see if Verizon might unlock it for me.. really it's not making much difference to me

So please elaborate. You bought the phone from Verizon to use on another network? How and why would you do that? If I wasn't on VZW I'd never get the phone from them... oh wait, did you buy it from BB, i.e. the VZW version on discount? If so you probably need to return it if it's still possible. If not then you are locked forever. Only way is to sell it and buy another. Yes, you own the phone but they own the discount you got from BB and basically you're screwed. Damn that sucks man.

He's talking about the SIM card.
VZW will not and has never unlocked a BL on any phone that had a locked BL. They say it protects their nerwork... More like they hate people hacking their apps and loosing money.
Last unlocked BL they sold was Nexus 6... Correct me, cuz I did zero research on this... Just my cloudy damaged memory

Thread: Pixel 3 XL Questions and Answers...
Question: Will Verizon unlock the Pixel?
I thought that's what he meant, I asked for clarification.
As for the bootloader, no they will not. I just moved to Pixel 3 XL after getting an OG Verizon PIxel XL right after launch (actually immediately after the dePixel exploit was published or I would have purchased direct from Google or chose another phone). This same discussion along with the same "it's not fair since I own the device" arguments has been going on for years. Look at Huawei for evidence that bootloader locking is becoming more restrictive and not less. You can only purchase the device outright, and even they have discontinued the bootloader code request system. Eventually an exploit might come around, but maybe it won't. jcase pretty much said the original dePixel find was an accident, and it took another year and a half or so to find another for a phone that was already being replaced. Either take a risk that one will be found knowing that it might never come, or bite the bullet and buy a Google version or a 6T (where even if you get it at full price from T-Mobile you might have to wait to get BL and carrier unlock).

Does it protect their network if I never accept any OTA updates because such updates could fix any exploits that eventually will be used to allow me to root the phone that I bought and own?
I mean, I'm just wondering what they would say/do if a lot of people start telling them point blank that they are going to boycott all security and other updates until they allow BL unlocking.

Easy answer. They don't care about consumer opinion until results are felt. They are concerned with brand, lawsuits , and corporate spending. Look at it this way, this thread was last posted on (by me) over a year ago, and there hasn't even been a sniff of an exploit or getting Big Red to change even once.
Once, a long time ago, Verizon carried bootloader unlockable phones. My Nexus 6 was from Verizon and it was fantastic. Google made a marketing decision for Verizon to push the Pixel OG exclusively, Verizon forced them to make a varient that could be locked down and full of Verizon crapware, just like every phone on their network. OG, 2, 3 and now 4, sold by Verizon will never get natively unlocked. The only hope would be a temp root solution and being able to toggle the unlock in developers options.
6 years ago unlocked "dev" phones weren't readily available, but Google sells an unlockable version now, with financing if you want, most people that want root just buy that.

I bought an XL from Verizon outright (paying full retail) because I use straightalk. My question is did I hurt myself by getting it through Verizon? Does Verizon somehow lock down the device or cause OTA updates to come from Verizon? Are there other pitfalls like rooting or unlocking the bootloader?
I don't think you can unlock the bootloader from Verizon

I did see that but if I understood it correctly that may change after the next update.
I have had nothing but Nexus phones since the Galaxy so I got used to cutting edge ROMs without having to jump through hoops.
I think, to be safe, I am returning it to Verizon and buy one from Google. I will have to eat a $30ish restocking fee.

But since your bootloader is unlocked you can flash whatever you want... Therefore you will have to manually update the phone monthly to stay up to date, but you can and that's the big plus. As for SIM unlock, Verizon doesn't lock any of there LTE phones

So, correct me if I am wrong, once I unlock the bootloader I have the same abilities with the Pixel as I had with the other Nexus phones (5, 6, 6p, etc...)? I am used to having it unlocked, rooted, and install updates manually so I am very comfortable with that process. My only reason for rooting is Xposed.
Very small window we got for unlocking Verizon Pixels. Now that they are all back-ordered, if you order from Verizon, you have to hope that they don't ship with November updates. If they do, those of us that are waiting are all out of luck, unless another method is found.

If you want an unlocked bootloader then buy from Google or T-Mobile.
You can unlock the Verizon Bootloader *today* but don't ever take an OTA update in the future without first checking the boards to see if unlocked bootloader gets lost somehow.

Technically you buy it from Google and bring it to T-Mobile who gives you a huge money incentive, something like half your payments.
https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news-and-blogs/pixel-offer.htm
13 dollars a month for 24 months; not that "huge" of a money incentive..
plus, you arent buying it from T mobile, its from Google..
The way I understand it (and I could be wrong) is that once you apply depixel8 to a verizon model, it breaks whatever verizon implemented preventing a bootloader unlock. After that, you can unlock the bootloader just like a GS version. There are no guarantees verizon won't be able to reengage the lock, but it seemed like Jcase and Firewaterdevs made it sound like once you run depixel 8 before the next update, the bootloader should remain unlockable. If that November patch is applied before depixel8 is, then it's locked. I don't think the November update will be able to reengage the lockout. So like the above, always check the boards first to find out what's safe and not.

If you purchased it from eBay, then your in a pickle. I have no idea what their policy is, or if the seller would even consider it. As far as bootloader unlocking it, I'm sure there are some folks that can/will do it for a fee, however, as the saying goes....buyer beware :fingers-crossed:
If "OEM unlocking" is greyed out, that means the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked. There is no way to hack a P2XL with locked BL to make it unlockable.
If you bought the P2XL directly from Google Store and you requested the "unlocked" version, then Google sent you the wrong one. Send it back and get the one you purchased.
If you bought it from Verizon store or Best Buy, those devices are *always* bootloader locked (buying directly from Google is the only way to get one with unlockable BL). You could return it but you will pay a restocking fee.
If you bought from an individual, you can try to get your money back. But it will be up to the seller to take it back.
UR Right

Getting a VZW locked device, maybe not worth it if you are dead set on flashing custom stuff.
Getting TWO 2 XLs (selling one for $300-400) probably worth it unless you're dead set on flashing custom stuff.
Google offers the same financing that VZW has (24mo 0% interest) and for roughly the same monthly $$$ you'd pay at VZW, you get an unlocked 2 XL!
If you get the Google unlocked version, which can be used on Verizon's network; it's ABSOLUTELY worth it.
I took the Verizon sim card from my unlocked 6P and dropped it in my unlocked 2 XL, no issues!
The 2 XL was a great device before I rooted, flashed a cust kernel, and cust rom on it, and it's just that much better now that I'm running all the custom stuff.

its still a great device with a locked bootloader.
You're asking the wrong questions however.
If you dont have any intentions of rooting/custom ROM'ing or things of the like, there is no reason not to buy it from Verizon.
If you plan to, or even think you might want to do something custom with the device, then it would be better to buy from Google.
An unlockable bootloader for most people is irrelevant. Tech minded people (like those here on XDA) place a premium on it.
Whether or no it is 'worth' anything is only something you can answer.

I believe the HTC phones are unlockable through their sunshine app. Jcase and Beaups.
I'm trying to decide between Factory Unlocked vs TM subsidized. In general, does TM allow the BL to be unlocked? I know in the past they allowed my OnePlus 7 to be unlocked.
Nope. You will wait forever
There is never a downside to buying an Unlocked device
So is it completely locked out or after you pay in full it can be unlocked?
They do after it's paid off. I went through this on my Oneplus 6t, it wasn't too bad. If you got the unlocked version like I did, unless Goggle did something unexpected with their chip, you should be able to unlock it in fastboot with OEM unlock.
I have the Oneplus 7 Pro and told TMO I needed the sim unlocked because I was going overseas for buisness for 6 months. Granted it took me a little bit between messaging them through the app and their social media, but eventually got it done. Then within 2 days of having the device I had a fully unlocked 7 Pro.
I bit the bullet and ordered thru T-Mobile, mainly because Google's ship date is so far out now (like next year far). I anticipate a process as painful as the one I went thru with my OnePlus 6T back in the day.... but it works out.
Thanks everyone.

I haven't B/L unlocked a Google/T-Mobile device since the Motorola Nexus 6 & TBH,I can't remember if I got it SIM Unlocked before B/L unlocking.
At any rate,IIRC,one doesn't necessarily have a thing to do w/the other. Of course,YMMV depending on the make/mfg of the phone.
No one really knows until devices start landing in the hands of the developer community. Anything beforehand is speculation, especially since this is a new SOC we're dealing with here.

Aslong as Google allows the phone to be unlocked the TMO variant should allow it. And as I stated before, I had my Oneplus 7 Pro unlocked on the 2nd day I had it, WAY before it was even paid off.
Are you even reading the comments?
The answer is yes
When the Pixel 4XL came out, it took me (6) Returns and on the 7th, i got the right Rep on the phone, who whitelisted my Pixel before i even took it out the box.

How did you get your phone unlocked that early? When I had my 7T Pro McLaren they were willing to do it once I told them it was for root, but for my 6 Pro they're expecting me to pay the full thing off in accordance with policy. I really don't have $750 to pay my phone off early.
Yes, TMobile allows the bootloader to be unlocked but only after the device is fully paid off and sim unlocked.
Otherwise the setting is greyed out in the menu.

Some of us have used the chat agents to have them unlock the sim, which yields the ability to unlock bootloader. I was able to do this a few weeks ago. I just said I was offered a job overseas. I said I was keeping my account active but wanted to use the pixel while overseas. They unlocked the sim no question asked. Sometimes it is a matter of finding the willing agent.
Btw, I am on an EIP.

Best wishes.

Did you do it through the TMo app or through T Force on Twitter?

I used Facebook Messenger. Took about a hour. The agents, supposedly, work multiple chats simultaneously. I've read both the app and Twitter worked as well.

Is your phone paid off?
@roirraW "edor" ehT This might be up your alley
I just switched from Verizon to T-Moble.
It was a no-brainer.
$280/mo for 2 lines and my iPad to 90$/mo for 3 lines + $16/mo for a new Samsung S22 for my oldest kid and a free A13 for my youngest, unlimited everything. (I have to keep the iPad on VZW).
No 5G from VZW to full 5G about everywhere I go.
And T-Mob is paying off my P6P.
SO, once the pay-off goes through and I'm rid of the VZW handcuffs, can I root this thing?
I'm not the big man, but I think the answer is yes.
Welcome to Team Magenta and have fun rooting! I switched to T-Mo from Verizon a few years back for the same exact reason. Much cheaper prices; much better reception in my area; and the freedom to unlock the bootloaders of my paid off phones (though having them be fully paid off wasn't a requirement for me with T-Mobile in the past - so I'm not positive that this is a requirement now).
Nowadays, I just bite the bullet and buy my phones straight from Google so that I can customize right away without having to pay it off fully first if this is truly a requirement now. But, if you stay with T-Mo for a while, you'll presumably start doing the same thing, haha.
Best of luck friend!
*Edit* - was the phone purchased directly from VZW? If so, then perhaps they have some custom restrictions on the image flashed on their phones that restricts the bootloader unlock option. But heck, with Pixels I imagine this restriction may be lifted once you download and install a T-Mo build update with a T-Mo SIM inserted.

I'm not the big man either (), but I will say that if you bought the Verizon "model", then you will never be able to unlock your bootloader (unless someone miraculously finds a method) and thus never be able to root it, no matter how much carrier switching you do.
If you didn't buy the Verizon "model", then we'll wait for the big man to give us his wise and unadulterated opinion
No, you won't be able to unlock unless you have the global or get it through T-Mobile
Verizon model: Bootloader cannot be unlocked even after sim unlock.
T-Mobile model: Bootloader unlock after sim unlock
AT&T model: I forget if it can be unlocked
Bummer....

Yeah, bought from VZW. I should sell it and just buy one from Google and start over

Sorry that I missed all the action - I was busy today. Well, actually I was very busy yesterday, which made me very lazy today. Indeed, just as the others said, a Verizon variant of anything will never be able to have the bootloader unlocked.

The firmware is the same between Verizon variants and all others - besides the few times that Google releases one or more carrier-specific versions of firmware but in the end they always consolidate them into one single for all variants. I think that what most people believe is that what determines whether a phone can be bootloader unlocked or not is the IMEI. Sometimes it's the case that with a direct from Google phone won't be able to have OEM Unlocking enabled until you get on the internet for some usually small amount of time. I think it's the OS calling home and checking the IMEI, and if the IMEI is one that was sold to Verizon, they never allow you to toggle the OEM Unlocking.

I can get one unlocked from Google right now for 799 and I don’t know why I didn’t think of this in the first place but I can finance it for 40 bucks a month for two years and then I’ll probably just end up paying it off at some point along the way.
You know, when you’ve been with Verizon for so long you just become resigned to the fact that what you once took for granted in the beginning of all this, rooting, is just not gonna happen anymore.
Now that I’ve left Verizon I’m feeling the old twinges of wanting to get back into it and in the last seven or eight years, since my Nexus 6, everything his grown outside of my realm. It’s like a leaky faucet, “once it starts drippin’, you can’t turn it off” lol

Sound advice for everything we do in life. Now having weighed my options, it seems silly to finance a Pixel 6 Pro, when I just had mine paid off, especially when we are getting closer to the Pixel 7 which will probably ship with Android 13 or receive it shortly after its release
