Notification sounds per app? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Am I just blind or dumb or is there no place in the system to set different notification sounds for things like calls, Gmail, text messages. I went into apps and notifications and went into individual apps and see notification options but no options to change what sound to use.

I couldn't find a way to do it either. I found an app to do it through the app store but it isn't working right.

Glad it just wasn't me lol

When has this ever been an option in stock Android?
You can use Light Flow to set custom notification sounds and vibrations.
It works. Mostly.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlite
There is a paid version that offers more options.

I don't understand. Almost all, if not all apps allow you to change the notion sound. Open the app in question and drill through it's settings menu and you'll find an option to change the notification sound.
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

For calls, go to settings, sound, phone ringtone. You can set a different ringtone for different callers to. You have to open their contact info, click the hamburger menu, and select set ringtone.
Gmail: This can't be done in general settings, which is great because you can set different sounds for different email accounts. Swipe right to open the side panel, scroll down to the bottom and select settings. Then select the email account. Select manage notifications, expand advanced, then sound and change to whatever.
Messages: Settings, notifications, sound.
A lot of apps can do this, some can't. Facebook you USED to be able to, but I can't find it anymore. Anyway, hope this helps. Google has made it a little cumbersome to change the sounds for some reason...

It is definitely kinda cumbersome to change the sounds, but the option is definitely there. Facebook in particular is really annoying to change sounds since you can play a different sound for every notification type.
Go to the notifications settings for your app, app info -> notifications, and you can then select the notification you want to change, then tap Advanced and you can change the sound that's played.

how did you guys do that? How did you make those settings magically appear? Lol. I must have just overlooked it or just didn't dig in deep enough.
I guess I was more focused on the notification section in settings and not within the apps themselves.
Thanks guys.

Where do you do it for Facebook? If I go to settings, apps, facebook, when I expand advance in notifications, there is no option for sound. I can't seem to find it in the app itself either.

When you go to notifications, you should see a screen like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
Tap on one of the notification types (left of the vertical black bar) and then hit advanced and you can change the sound.

Wow, all this time I've been blind to it! Fricken Google... Words with Friends was notifying with a sound even though I had it turned off in the app. Looked at pretty much the same notification setup as FB, sure enough, there it was... But why Google? Why make it so hard? Anyway, thanks! Now I can really change some things.

Is there a gmail notification app?

Is there a way to attach a ringtone to specific senders in gmail? The gmail notification on the GN allows me to attach a ringtone, but it applies to every email that arrives in my inbox.

Not that I know of, but if it's only a couple people you want to do this for you could always just make a label for them and then use the per label notification feature.
Double posting here and the Q&A isn't going to get your question answered.

When you hit "Menu > Label Settings" from your inbox you're actually just setting up the inbox's settings. To manage your label notification go to "Menu > Settings > %googleaccount% > Manage Labels". From there you can customize each one. They have to be synced to have notifications.

Thank you for the direction. I still have the problem of notifications going off with each and every email that comes to my inbox. If I turn off notifications in my general settings, then the labels notifications don't work. I leave the notifications on and I'm back to square one with the exception of a few distinct ringtones for certain senders. I'm 50% there. I can't believe someone hasn't written an app that does this.

Nope. I just checked out K9. It doesn't have settings to pick and choose which notification sounds I want for gmail senders while turning off the rest.

Could you set the Gmail ringtone to silent and leave the label tones as whatever you wish?
Eureka!!! Got it! Some of the respondents tried to explain, but I kept missing something. So here is what and how it worked;
1) Leave notifications on in the phone's systems/sounds/volumes
*Gmail recognizes all folders as labels, which includes gmail folders like inbox, priority, sent, etc. Consequently you can turn off or assign specific ringtones to each label including the ones you create. Create labels in your gmail settings on your computer and then they can be managed on your phone.
Create different labels. Create filters and attach the filter to the appropriate label. ( Ex: Label = Family Members. Filter = [email protected].com)
The filter menu gives you an option to attach the filter to a label. It also has an option to run the filter through your existing emails so all of your past and future emails from mom can be stored in one place.
You can attach as many individual senders or any other filter criteria that you choose to which ever labels.
Now back to your phone*
2) Open Gmail on your phone
3) Open Gmail's menu > Settings
*don't select labels settings at this point*
4) Select the gmail account that you want to apply your ringtone notifications.
5) Scroll down and select manage labels.
6) All labels will be listed from the gmail designated labels to your custom labels.
* At this point, you can go to each folder and select how you want to be notified when new emails arrive. You must select to have the folder automatically synced to have the notifications options available*
7) Select the synchronized folder who's notifications you wish to modify. Now you may choose a particular ringtone, silence, and/or to be notified in the status bar.
Thank you to everyone who pointed me in the right direction!

[Q]lockscreen notifications

Ever since I updated to 5.0.1, the lockscreen notification is different from kk. In kk, my msg would show the sender and the content of the message but in LP it only shows a small icon instead. Did they change the way lockscreen notification behanves? Anyway to make it look like kk or I will have to use a 3rd party app?

Try NILS on the Play Store. Disabedefault notifications completely once installed and use NILS instead.
NILS mimics the new notification style of Lollipop, but will show the entire text message (depending on how you set NILS up). You can also disable certain notifications from showing.

this must be a "Samsung thing" because my wife's HTC M8 running lollipop doesnt group lock screen notifications. She gets a loooooong list of them individually, so it must be the way Samsung groups them is the reason you have to tap. I will check out the app previous post.

I actually started using NiLS because I was getting annoyed by the new notification system. Like you, I hated having to take the extra steps just to see the messages. I used to be able to just flcik the screen on, glance at my message (at least who it was from), then shut the screen down. On Lollipop, I have to turn the screen on, expand the notifications, then look at the message. What used to take about 2 seconds now takes like 10.
The other thing I hated was how the lockscreen showed EVERYTHING in your notification menu. I use Power Toggle and also Calendar STatus Pro, which both show "widgets" in the notification menu. They all would appear on the lockscreen, as well as the "Power Saving On" message and "Do Not Disturb Mode On." Disabling them in the "Application Notifications" section of the settings would also disable the notifications from the menu dropdown too. So in the end, the freaking lockscreen became a cluttered mess.
Seriously, whoever decided that this was a good idea is now on my hate list.

How do I get my notifications like this:

Here's what I want:
Phone gives no sounds or vibrations unless my FAVORITES call me. When they call me the phone VIBRATES only. No sound.
For all other notifications (texts, 3rd party notifications, emails, etc...) I want the LED to pulse. But the phone won't make a sound or vibrate. Then when I wake my screen, I see the notifications on my screen.
Right now I have it on priority only with CALLS from favorites only coming through. Volume all the way off and set to vibrate only. The LED pulses when I get texts, emails, etc. but I do not see the notifications on the lockscreen when I wake the phone. I did for awhile and I must have changed some setting because now they are not there. So I'll see the pulse, then I have to unlock it and the status bar shows the notification symbol for text, email etc..
Any help?

I thought this was standard Lollipop procedure, but maybe I'm remembering things differently. It's under Sound & Notification; Notifications; Apps; and you pick the app you want to modify.

Text Message Tone with new 1.4 update

All I really wanted from the speaker update was a tone when text messages arrive. Shouldn't it use the ringtone volume?
I assumed this would be an obvious use of the speaker. Can anyone explain to me why this does not work and if there are any work arounds. I've tried the native Samsung Note 5 native messaging app, hangouts, google messenger and Verizon messenger+. Yes I checked and sound is on and volumes are turned up (media volume, ring volume and watch ringtone). Thanks

I don't think LightFlow has any control over sound notification, only vibration notification. At least that's all I see in the Play Store description:
Code:
Light flow allows you to take control of the notifications on your device.
It's main features are:
- Controlling the notification LED for phones that have them (cycling colors through outstanding notifications)
- Sound control, including repeating sounds
- Vibration control, including custom vibration patterns and repeating vibrations
[B]- Android wear vibration support[/B]
- Sleep times
- Lock screen based notifications (on phones that support live wallpapers on lock screens)
- Contact specific notifications for certain notification types

Now on Google Play, as "Smart Wear Notification".
Works like a charm. With sound notification and/or reading text. May work with many apps though I only have tried it with the standard android message apps.
Finally getting what Android Wear should have provided from the beginning along its sound notification for calls.
so if I read all these correctly.. the naitive huawei sounds are for Calls and Alarms only? Notifications make no audible sound ? I just got my watch today and I know when I went into the sound volumes, they are all turned up and I could hear sounds.. but when I get an Android Messages SMS or Hangouts message.. the watch only vibrates.. and doesn't play a sound..
Thanks!

HTC Boom Sound Notification on Status Bar

Is there a way to shut off HTC Boom sound notification on status bar? It is quite annoying to see it on status bar 100 times a day. Sometimes it just blinks for no reason.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
It only Shows when something is playing.
So some Kind of App is responsible.
AFAIK you can't get rid of it now without root.
I wonder if you can use the disable notification feature built in to marshmallow if you can work out which app it is?
Might just be the settings app.
I don't have mine yet to try it out, but on my current Z3+ I can disable notifications generated by the main settings app.
I've read about this and it'll probably annoy me. I like a tidy status bar. The little keyboard option selector on my G4 that pops up when I'm using my keyboard annoys me, too.

On HTC 10?
I'm fairly certain the only way to get rid of it on G4 is to delete/disable all keyboards except one. I use SwiftKey and cannot disable LG Keyboard so I'm stuck with it on this device.

Don't you've something like this:
Settings -> Language & Input -> Selector Icon (ON/OFF)
Did you try long pressing the notification choosing settings and unticking notifications?
I do not have the Selector Icon setting and there is no option to untick it in settings. I have an AT&T version, if that matters.
The Boomsound icon will appear if ANY app is running that autoplays video/audio, including Blinkfeed; News Republic; Facebook, etc. The best way to prevent it from appearing under such circumstances, is to unselect autoplay video in every app.
The reason it's popping up randomly is because of silent videos, like ads on mute, facebook videos on mute, etc.
As for disabling the notification, you might be able to accomplish that with sense toolbox (xposed) but you'd need root.
Ads on mute such as in Instagram causes the notification. It is just not necessary. Hopefully there is a "fix".

This is one of the most annoying things about this phone, together with the fact we can't pick and choose the quick settings in the notification bar. I hope that they will fix... Besides that, so far so good, great phone..

Someone else who understands the pain of not being able to edit quick settings! Lol it drives me crazy. I also can't believe they wouldn't include a sync option. I always turn that off overnight.

You can actually activate control over the existing toggles for the quicksettings; however, you will not have access to more toggles. Just open the quicksettings, then press and hold on the Settings button until it asks you to activate SystemUI Tuner. For more toggles you'll have to install a custom ROM (e.g., Viper10, LeeDroid, etc.).
Perhaps a custom rom like Leedroid or Viper can help
I've had the phone for a month now and it just started doing this yesterday. I've always had blinkfeed going and it never did it before. I don't have FB or instagram on the phone. I've cleared all recent apps and it still does it, all night long too. It does it every time I turn the phone on from sleep. It's really annoying, anyone figure out why yet?
OK so I noticed that it seems to only do it when " location services" is on
