Looking in settings I can't seem to set a different sound for different notifications. IE email sounds different than SMS.
Really? Clearly Android is in need of some 'Mobile Phone' settings.
This was one of my 1st gripes and the way round for me is to use 3rd part apps
1. Disable notifications in Settings
2. Install Handscent SMS and set it to play what ever sound when you get a SMS
3. Install Gmail Popup and set this to play a different sound for Emails received
Works for me and makes my Desire more desirable
removed
Try looking in the apps themself rather than in settings!
i.e. change Gmail notifications in GMail, SMS notifications in your messaging app etc et.
Regards,
Dave
Yikes... Every mobile phone since like 1982 has been able to change this in one place. I knew I was going to have a few problems with android but wow.
Is there an official place to submit enhancement (20 years ago) requests to the android development team?

You rather miss the point. Since Android allows all sorts of new applications, with all sorts of potentially new notifications, there is no way you can have a "one stop shop" for notifications.
I have 4 email accounts setup in Gmail, and each of them has a different notification sound. It would be very hard to achieve this if notification sounds were handled centrally.
Regards,
Dave
And if you don't change the sound in an app it uses the default one as set in the 'Sound' settings in the menu, under 'Notification sound'
Windows Phone feels pretty feature complete. But I'm sure there are still some things we all personally would like to see baked into future releases. What are some of your wants?
My List:
Faster way to kill a task (like flicking up the card when in multi-task view)
Visual Voice Mail (on Sprint) - Seems inconsistent across board.
Wifi Tethering - I believe will be on all new Mango phones released.
More visual options like partially transparent tiles w/wallpapers.
Separate volume controls ala Android.

Share a Video using MMS
API hooks for remote control software such as Bomgar, logmein, etc...
Rotate homescreen on landscape mode.
Built in VPN client
Ability to get IP address information in the about screen
WIFI Hotspot as you've mentioned
More system wide voice commands, and more voice to text commands such as being able to reply without saying read it 1st.
Ability to manage open apps as you've already mentioned
Ability to join to a domain and manage phone using GPO
Support for USB devices
More that I can' think of right now...
Overall I am pleased and already can't wait for Tango and then Apollo!!!
The ability to delete an email on the phone only and not on the mail server
The option to change the default calender view
Better call history (group calls by caller, ability to delete multiple selected calls)
Smart Dialer
Separate volume controls for system (apps), ringer, and music
Ability to "kill" apps from the switcher, and to pin apps to it so they aren't automatically tombstoned
A notifications panel
An integrated connection manager (Network Dashboard is great, but the feature needs to be built-in, and easily accessible)
Wallpaper support on the start screen
User-customizable accent colors
A favorite apps hub
Battery percentage display (isn't text the main selling point of Metro?)
-in call recording (api or preferably native in the dialer)
-full landscape support in all native apps
-usb tethering as simple/fast as it was in WM 6.5 (ICS worked great)
-better bluetooth controls (disable discoverability without disabling bt)
-api to allow for mymobiler type application (control phone from PC connection)
-simple/fast USB storage mode switch
-more detailed call history (list the call time lengths)
The ability to use Windows Media Center to stream recorded tv shows and remotely record tv shows.
Further Xbox live integration such as the ability to queue downloads (For those that actually have a X360)
Wallpaper Support
Custom Tile Colours
Seperate Volume Controls
- Custom Theme and Accent colours
- US only services expanded Worldwide
Oh, just remembered:
I would like to see a general improvement to Bing's voice recognition and its usage. I would like to compose email with it, and I would like it to start showing onscreen what I said with only a small delay.
Google right now is the gold standard. MS silver. Apple ... non contender in this regard.
I'd like to see:
- Bing services world wide
- an alphabetical jumplist in the games hub
- support for update independent backups in Zune
- the ability to store save games in the cloud
- that damn address bar in IE9 disappear after a few seconds
- the folder icon in e-mails back
- support for deleting all messages and marking all messages as read
MediaBuddy lets you stream from the Windows Media Centre library, not sure if that was one of the features above.
You can also stream from your SkyDrive, but you have to use the Office application to get to the music. You can't pin the folder to your Live Tiles.
I don't use Media Centre, so I'm going to import a sub-set of my music collection to Media Centre that I want available on my phone and see how Media Buddy works with that.
But, the feature really should be in Zune, either via SkyDrive or on through your WiFi Network or a PC-hosted server.
I'd also like a random album feature, so you can play the albums at random.
Recording calls without telling people is against wiretapping laws in a lot of places.
I have no idea why people keep asking for that. It's stupid.

Ignorant comment. Check your facts.
I'm going to steal some from others
Faster way to kill a task (like flicking up the card when in multi-task view)
Separate volume controls
Voice integrated into everything (compose email, type web address, etc)
Find On Page
smart dialing
When composing a New Text show other fields besides Mobile. People have work Cell phones too
Share a Video via MMS (WTF MS)
Ability to Select all Emails in a Category (So you can mark them unread or place them in a specific folder)
Something like Network Dashboard built into the OS
Battery Percentage
User-customizable accent colors
Something like CineXPlayer or VLC player so I can play files that aren't native to the OS
I'll also add
Native PDF support. The Adobe PDF app is horrible.
These ideas would be useful for Microsoft's suggestions box too

Dutch display language maybe? All other options can be set to Dutch on a trophy but not display language...

I don't think so, N8ter is right on that one. If you're doing that in Germany you are able to get sentenced for 3 years in prison.
Recording calls is NOT illegal everywhere. Why should those who can legally do so suffer because some of you can't? Are you not able to follow your own laws because of temptation?
I just switched to the one x from iphone 4, but the notification system seems to be a lot worse, there isn't even a notifications setting in settings and I'm not getting notified of draw something moves?
is there a fix to that?
You should have seen the old ios notification lol. I am sure there is a way to fix drawsomething notification. Is it an app problem?
There should be no problems with other stuff such as emails , whatsapp, viber etc which I am using.
Btw, coming from ios, you will have much to learn and you will like android. Unless you just want a dumbed down fuss free experience. Hehe
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

DrawSomething currently has no notifications. However there is a big update planned soon which will include notifications. See here http://phandroid.com/2012/03/25/draw-something-soon-to-receive-a-substantial-update/
I really do like android, this is just one little drawback
facebook and skype don't seem to have notifications either, i'd expect there to be a menu in settings just like iOS where you can customize which apps you want to have notifications or not?

Notification settings are usually contained within the app itself, rather than a global setting. Skype and Facebook have settings for Notifications.
As above, each individual app has notification settings within the settings of the app.

As others have said each individual app tends to have notification settings that you set up personally. There are some global notifications for email, SMS, missed calls that will flash the LED light located under "Display & gestures > Notification flash".
I'm also having problems with Facebook for Android and FB Messenger. I have notifications enabled and set up correctly, yet I'm not receiving anything for them. Also, Draw Something now has the ability for Android notifications, but each time I try to enable it, I get told they're not supported by my phone.
Everyone including myself has the issue where once a day my phone stops getting notifications on my phone. It seems to be pretty wide spread but at the same time, some people don't have the issue at all. Which makes me think maybe it's a 3rd party app killing notification. So anyone who has the notification issue list all of your apps and maybe we will find one we all have in common.
To make this easy grab the app "List my apps" from the app store and edit the plain text template to remove the package name and just give you nice list of apps you can copy and paste .
I'll Start
A Better Camera

Ok seeing how nobody is responding to my thread let me ask everyone this
How many people with the notification issue are running facer?
When I started having notification issues this was my app list:
- iHeartRadio
- Calculator
- UP by Jawbone
- Whoopee Wear
- Weather WatchFace
- Specialized WatchFace
- Planets WatchFace
- Swing by Swing Golf Scorecard
I then uninstalled all watchface apps and apps I don't use and reset Android Wear and the watch:
- iHeartRadio
- Calculator
- UP by Jawbone
- Whoopee Wear

Thanks for responding. But I Recommend you give a full android application list. Because other applications do push notifications such as Textra.
does acDisplay install on Android Wear? because i only listed my watch apps - which is where the problem is. The watch. Not the phone. At least not in my case.
In my case, the watch was receiving notifications, but wasn't alerting me of them.

I think this is why people wont respond because there are simply too many apps. Each person on here probably has 20-50 that are completely different from the next person. It would take a monumental effort to find a commonality between devices, something that should be Google's responsibility. It will simply be too difficult to filter through all the different apps people are using amongst each other.
The best attempt at self-diagnosis would be to just run your phone in a vanilla state and progressively installs apps one after the other over a period of several days to see if you can break the watch, then you would know which app is causing it. For instance the only apps I have really pushing notifications are Gmail, Google Messenger, and Exchange email. However even then, by just having Gmail connected I am going to get other things like Calendar updates, ToDo reminders, etc. Some things we may not even be able to disable so we'll never know where the culprit is.
Ultimately it shouldnt really be any of the apps since everything worked fine before the damn update to 5.x. Anyone know if it's possible to downgrade to 4.x?

If people would post using the app I mentioned above. I'll sort through and find a common denominator.
Cannot find option te set notification sound in messages app settings. It is possible in general device sound settings but causes the same notification sound in all apps. Is it solution ?
Open your message app
Next tap on the person message you want to customize the notification sound
Next tap on the 3 dots on the top right corner and select custom notification and tap one more time to enter the customized field
There look for sound
Thats it
Hope this helps
Unfortunately when you delete a thread with an individual where you have set a custom sound, the sound goes back to default.
You can also use Textra App. Amazing UI and customization with that app. Support Dev with pro version to unlock other useful features.
Only if you don't use RCS (well I can't find anywhere that third party apps support it).
If your looking to change the message app notification sound it self then do this

Yes that's it.
I didn't notice in first look that "new messages" and "general notifications" could be double tapped with further possibility to set sounds.
Thanks for that and for previous posts as well.
