So as many of you know root has not been achieved for this phone yet. However I feel the more important goal is to unlock the boot loader.
If you have not been following the news about the future of root, once the Note 4 gets updated to Lollipop any root achieved on the device will be broken, most likely permanently, unless the boot loader is unlocked so the kernel can be modified. (http://androidcommunity.com/chainfire-details-root-issues-in-android-5-0-gives-quick-fix-20141020/)
SO those of you pledging money to get root access on this device might be wasting your money, at least in the long term.
Also many of you know that Samsung had teased that Lollipop for the Note 4 is coming soon. (http://phandroid.com/2014/10/22/galaxy-note-4-lillipop/)
So in order to preserve the root capabilities of this device the boot loader needs to be the focus. I agree to get there we will most likely need root first, but getting root only is a short term goal.

Agreed.
I pledge $50 to unlock the bootloader.

New information coming out about KNOX
So KNOX is not as strong of a fort as most people think.
http://mobilesecurityares.blogspot.com/2014/10/why-samsung-knox-isnt-really-fort-knox.html?m=1
I read through the article and can't help but wonder what it means for us in terms of unlocking the bootloader.

That's what I gathered and although I'm prepared for the possibility of no root, I do hope something can be figured out.
Do you think any of that knox analysis can be used to find an exploit?

Its a real shame manufacturers are doing this. Rooting and having control over YOUR phone is what android is about.... I don't even flash Roms anymore but as the owner of my device I expect root permissions to at least backup apps and other minor little perks. Might give the N4 a try but keep my s4 as a backup if I can't handle no root down the road... Real bummer this situation is.

It not really manufacturers like Samsung, but more like carriers like AT&T.

Samsung sell the phone boot loader unlocked, AT&T and Verizon lock it down and bloat it up.

Sorry I meant carrier :/
Again I want to point out that if the note 4 gets root before at&t updates their note 4 to android 5.0 then you have a choice to make. Do you want to keep root and stay on android 4.4.4 or update to 5.0. With root you can freeze the at&t updater app so you don't have to worry about at&t trying to force you to update. This is why root at this time is much more important than unlocking bootloader. Most of the time root comes before bootloader unlock anyways because it's much less work. But again this is Dependant on getting root first. If we get no root before 5.0 then it won't matter because then we'll just be down to unlocking the bootloader.

Hello. I guess I have a few random questions regarding root on this device. I won't bore you with pleasantries. Here are the questions:
1) What do you think the possibility of root is with this device (bounty and all)? I mean, honestly. I'm not just talking hopefulness. Do you really think it'll get root? Root means a lot to me. I enjoy everything that you can do with it. Not having it is sort of bumming me out. It's the first Android phone I've not had root on. And I really am loving the Note 4. I don't want to go to a Nexus 6 JUST for root, ya know?
2) Is root going to go away in the future (in general)? It seems like the carriers are getting very serious about locking everything down. Android L is supposed to make it even MORE difficult to exploit vulnerabilities.
Anyway, I guess that's it. Any thoughts you have about anything I mentioned above is welcomed. I mean this question to be more of a discussion than anything else.
Thanks for all of your responses.

Well I see this question / discussion is going over well, lol.
The Galaxy line is by far the hugest force in Android, its development community is massive. That said, we're a spin off Galaxy phone, and a carrier specific. I've been with Android phones and the Galaxy line since its inception, and if nothing else, the one thing that always hold true is; we always find a way. There may be a day when OEMs and Carriers can go toe to toe with XDA, but that day won't be today. We'll have root soon.

1.) Root on KitKat will be found. It's just a matter of time and effort.
2.) Root on Android L is going to be a different story. Once this phone is upgraded to lollipop it will be impossible to root without an unlocked boot loader. This is because of the new implementation of SELinux, which will require a custom kernel in order to maintain root access during the boot of the device. At least this is what Chainfire had stated. Therefore people need to focus on the boot loader NOT root.
Also definitely don't upgrade to lollipop until the borrower has been unlocked otherwise you may be SOL.
Just my 2 cents.

Will lollipop destroy our chances for root? Upgrading to this very exciting, tempting, operating system, will take away our chance to modify our own device.... It is our device, why can't we use it, do with it, how we want. Upgrade equals no root... Does anyone know this very important answer to this horrible question. Upgrade to lollipop means no root, ever?

there's no way to tell if that is true or not. Hell, we dont even have root right now, without lollipop. In general, if you want to keep root access, its wise not to accept any OTA updates but thats not always the case. Only time will tell....

I'm going to update. regardless. Even with Apple and their jailbreak and their iOS, you update and lose the cydia.. The god of their phone and iPad jailbreak. Live it and love it. With us and Android, I'll update and hope that someone will be able to root it. As I read, what I read, it will be ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE to do. If not IMPOSSIBLE. ANYONE want to back me up on this? I hate to say it due to I want root a bad as, well less than sex, but I want it. Lollipop, blocks all root ability from that update forth.... Anyone? Please bring the knowledge
I doubt lollipop will be the end all for root access but it will likely be extremely difficult. There always a vulnerability somewhere that a Dev can exploit.
That's kinda what I'm hoping. With every update, there was a jailbreak, a root. Someone, somewhere out there will get us the coveted, elusive root exploit. OR will these tricks of the trade, will the tweaks be a built in commodity? Will they just be able to be Installed free of root restrictions. Let's get the root done people. Satisfy the masses
It's honestly not that serious. I have owned every Nexus phone (except the 6 obviously) and rooted them all except for the 5. I missed the CM11 themes but there are enough apps for customizations out there now that I didn't feel the need to do anything to the phone. If you're THAT concerned, I'd recommend selling your phone when the N6 comes out and buy that.
From everything that is coming out that I have read about Android L it looks like a few of the apps may be able to work without root if they are reprogrammed correctly. It looks like Google wants everyone to be able to have the functions they need \ want without compromising the security of the phone.
Just saw today that Write To External SD will be fixed in Lollipop without root

I just read chainfire was able to root lollipop on the Nexus 9 and adjust his SuperSu to work with it. So who knows there might be the a chance that it might be easier for him to root the note 4 with lollipop. We have to wait and see.

So i know AT&T and Verizon users are not able to root their devices at this point! Has it ever been like this for devices Like S4,S5,Note 3 etc?.... If so, did they take a long time to get rooted too?....
it seems AT&T and Verizon pay more to their software developers to make this harder for everyone!!!!....
in short; no.
bootloaders have started to be locked down more over time on att/vzn but nothing major till of late. the s5 is actually rooted already, so only the note 4 is left. if the note 4 never gets root it'll be the first major flagship to go rootless.
I remember the s4 was out for about 2 months before we got root by having a bootloader patch tricking it (loki) but shortly after it was updated over for the later of bootloader phones...now they use run safestrap and still can't get any non TouchWiz rom I was one of the lucky ones who froze the updater apps before they automatically pushed it

I think you may be confusing root with unlocked bootloader. root was achieved before the phone even came out, the bootloader wasnt unlocked till a week or two after, but wasn't released so Verizon couldn't patch it yet. that way verizon ppl could have an unlocked bootloader on their phone as well.
root has ALWAYS been something we had.
I dislike locked bootloaders, but can get over it, root is just so **** necessary for BASIC functionality..
what I dont get is why more manufacturers wont take a page out of HTC's (or was it Moto?) book and allow people to unlock the bootloader from a website. If you agree to void the warranty, why not allow people to do that...

this. i've been holding off on the note4 to see when root arrives. if root doesn't come out before nex6 release i'm going to have to jump ship...which is too bad...would lose functionality going that route but lack of root trumps all else...

Same here. Of course I would prefer being able to root it, but I think I could deal with the scenario of that not happening ever, I really like this phone that much!
It's been great even without root, but there are just a couple things I'd like to change. For example I hate the emojis on here (prefer the standard hangouts emoji) and I could easily fix that with root. Other than that I can live with the phone as is. I do miss some Xposed modules though
The things I'm missing that require root:
Titanium Backup
AdAway
Being able to modify my DPI
Avast Anti-Theft
Pretty sure there's more but those are what I can think of off the top of my head...

I'd like to have those options as well but, like the others have stated, I like this phone so much that I could easily get used to not having root. I pledged and hope someone finds an exploit but I am loving this phone as is.

yea im in the same boat as a lot of people who need root for Ti Backup so all my game saves and what not... kinda a bummer.... I guess ill have to wait a bit longer for the upgrade... or maybe pick up a S5 instead...

Yeah I'm loving this phone, but if root is unachievable I might have to sell it and get a T-Mobile version...
Like the title says I have a h812 from Canada and I seen all the American models ready for threads and I didn't see one for the mines sobi was wondering which American model will be related to the h812 thanks

As long as the hardware is the same on the phone, which basically all g4's are, then you shouldn't have a problem. Canadian models have always had a us counterpart. People should know that by now and if they don't and this is their first phone they have no business rooting it in the first place.

You don't really learn anything until you brick a device though.

Wow guys this is terrible...
To answer the question, usually I always root and modify my canadian device with T-Mobile's. Never had a problem, since they use the same bands as my carrier (Videotron).
EDIT: Of course they come with the usual T-Mobile crap that I cannot use, but with root, there's nothing you can't remove.
Tmobile doesn't always have the same phones as the Canadian carriers.... That's a stupid thing to say. You don't just pick up a phone, see there's no forum for your device specific and head over to the Tmobile one. That's how you brick it. When root comes to our phones I am sure there will be 100% clear instructions on how to flash and which device it applies for. Stop worrying about root so much, be patient and know what you're doing.
True that and att phones are usually our counter part well atleast for all the phones I owned before
Sent from my LG-H812 using Tapatalk
Unfortunately i don't think root will ever arrive for G4. Not unless LG and carrier allow unlock of the bootloader. I know people are working on it but it seems like an impossible task for anybody other than LG. I had similar experience with Xperia Z2 and had to sell the device at a loss just to get one that i could unlock/root.
I really do hope it happens but i doubt it ever will.
Well they did eventually release it for the G3....
Why are people going around saying that there isn't a possible root when we've clearly seen proof of it happening.
The has barely been out for a while now and you're all expecting it to come instantly right on release date. Relax. Seriously. If you wanted something you can root instantly go buy another phone.
