A few weeks ago, I noticed a metallic sound while making a phone call, that not only made it difficult to hear what the person on the other end said, but it was also pretty painful to listen when they talked. Earlier the same day, I had received a phone call with no issues. Nothing special had happened to the phone during the day that I know of that should have led to this.
Over the following few weeks, call quality have varied a lot. In the beginning, this problem never occured when I was on the receiving end of the call - only when I was the one who made the call. My calls consistently had this problem, however. Then after a few days, I would start to get the metallic sound when I received calls as well, but not right away. Now I get it pretty much all the time, no matter who made the call, and I'm having to resort to earphones to be able to have a proper phone call.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
have you flashed a new sense 3.0 rom and not flashed the corresponding radio
bc if you didn't flash the radio designed for that rom base you would get metallic or tinny sounds and they dont seem as magnified when using a bluetooth headset or ear buds
If you have rooted your phone and installed a new ROM, try flasing a radio and RIL suggested..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877295
But if it is stock...better take it to the service center
It's the stock ROM, haven't even rooted it yet (figured it would be a bad idea to do it before I got the problem fixed). Problem is that I won the phone, and I have no idea where it was bought, so I'd probably end up having to pay for getting it fixed, which I'd rather not But if no one has any idea what could be wrong (when it's stock), I guess I don't have much of a choice..
Hi everybody, I've been googling and looking into all the posts (here in xda) I could related to my problem.
Currently I'm in Nepal, and bought a second hand One X International version; the unit was barely used with very minor wear signs. A couple of weeks ago I was driving on the road and it started pouring rain, made it home in about 5 mins. Phone did not appear to have gotten very wet, however I took the silicon case of and dried the screen with a piece of cloth. I forgot to turn the phone off and as everything seemed fine, I continued using it for the next couple of days.
Two weeks later I start getting complains from people I was on the phone with stating that they could barely hear me, but oddly enough at times they mic volume went up and all the sudden they could hear me crystal clear.
If I turn the phone into speaker mode then they can hear me, the same happens with headphones.
Tried getting rid of stock Sense (not sure what version I had, I know it was JB 4.1.1 and Sense 4+), flashed IceColdJelly 3.5.1
Also left the phone off in rice for about 2 days (it was too late to do it but tried it anyways)
My phone does not have warranty and I'm reluctant to send it into a Repair Center here as I've heard friends and their terrible experiences with them in here.
So I decided to open my phone to see if the MIC was clogged/dirty or something (plus I have the WiFi signal issue) but everything on the inside seems fine. The phone itself seems to have never been open.
The MIC still sounds muffled (no it is not completely dead), tried the stock android Sound Recorder and barely pics up my voice if I speak directly into it.
Could it be a software issue? If not, how can I test and know which MIC I need to buy???
Any help, tips or thoughts will be much appreciated!!!
P.S. I also tried doing a Factory Reset. Nothing changed
problem apparently solved
so last night I managed to restore the phone into it's original state with a nandroid backup. Haven't been able to fully check the issue properly because I did not put the phone back the bezel yet. But now volume in video recording is normal, and have been told that I can be heard on a call
My apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I think there might be a problem with the One M8 camera if you're an active user.
I’ve had my phone for one week and tried to take a picture today. When I opened the camera application, there's a light buzzing sound, and the camera can't focus. It appears the focus motor is continually running.
A quick perusal of the web yields several results:

It seems the common denominator is vibration from people mounting the device on their handlebars.
I've logged over 100,000 miles of heavy duty motorcycle abuse, on and off road, with a variety of HTC & Samsung equipment. I've never had an issue with vibration, and I've never had a device failure. I'm hoping there isn't an inherent design flaw with the M8 camera that can't withstand normal everyday use from active people.
I'm going to send this one back and try another one, if that one also fails, it will be the end of the line for me and the M8. Fingers crossed this all works out because I love this device.

Mine started doing the same thing today! Only when using the regular camera. Front facing camera is fine. But yea, turn on the camera and it starts buzzing and trying to focus.

I'm not sure what "T" means, does that mean it happened to you as well?
Treatment from HTC CS so far is abysmal, I'm really disappointed with the way they're handling this and I'm having serious doubts about keeping the replacement M8 they give me.

Yeah, put in on my motorcycle mount last night for the first time. Just went down the street to get gas and didn't even ride for 15 minutes. The camera started going nuts this morning. Seems to have stopped for now, but for a few hours I couldn't open the camera without it buzzing and constantly trying to refocus. This is pretty sad. I rod with my Samsung Galaxy S3 using the same mount for a year and a half with no issue at all.

Look at the bright side, at least yours stopped buzzing. I'm surprised it did, as I haven't heard of anyone else that was able to get the camera to work again.
I spent 8 days & 6 customer service reps trying to get HTC to replace my M8. It was purchased in Hong Kong as a gift and they have decided to stick it to me because I'm in the U.S. now. All of the C/S reps lied to me multiple times and no effort was ever made to rectify the situation. Quite bummed that this is the last HTC device I will ever own.
BUYER BEWARE... the number of broken camera complaints continues to grow, it's looking more and more like a serious hardware flaw.
Bought an m8 yesterday.
Went for a motorcycle ride today with my m8 mounted in my arm mount.
Now my camera is unusable. Same buzzing hardware issue. This looks like a hardware design issue. Has anyone found a solution. Not mounting the phone to the motorcycle isn't going to work for me. I often ride all day long and need to charge the phone while I ride and use it as a GPS
Mine started doing this yesterday. Made a 200 mile trip a couple weeks ago, phone on the handlebars of my motorcycle the whole time, camera still worked. Went for an hour ride yesterday, came back, and the camera was doing this. Now I'm trying to talk with the customer service reps, and they just want me to reset everything.
Is having a phone rooted still a deal breaker for warranties like it was a few years ago? I'm hesitant to tell them my phone is rooted and half of their questions don't apply.
Went for a bicycle ride yesterday, with my phone mounted on my handlebars, and sure enough, camera won't focus, and making a buzzing sound. This is BS. I rode over 2000 miles, with my S4 mounted, and never had a problem. Now I can't even ride down the street and my HTC breaks?
Brought my phone into Verizon, today. They are overnighting me a new phone, and you can bet the first thing I'm going to do, is go for a bike ride.
Anyone get their phone "repaired" by HTC?

Same problem here
I put my One M8 on the stem of my handlebars on my road bike
just started happening after a few hundred miles of riding
Yesterday the camera briefly fixed itself for one picture, then immediately started buzzing again
Road bike vibration

Same issue. Mounted on road bike. Seems to be a common problem.
Ugh, I have the same damn problem - lots of riding on my motorcycle. Will bring it in today for a replacement, but now I'm considering moving away from this phone as I don't have time to keep S-OFF'ing, etc. every time the hardware craps out :|
Just got my M8 2 days ago, Is this affecting a certain variant or all M8's
I don't ride or anything however, it's good to know that the camera module is fragile.
Does anyone know who makes the M8's camera modules?
Maybe informing HTC about this enough will get them to do RMA's to swap the module just like the M7 pink/purple thing delima
Same issue. Mounted on my motocycle and after first ride ... camera buzzing ...
I just started having the same issue and I dont even ride.....
Attempted Fix/Thread Revive
I have the same problem as all of you, hopefully we can revive this thread and fix our phones! I messed around with the camera when buzzing and as noted in this thread, it seems that part of the rear camera is messed up, in fact, one can hear rattling when shaking the phone. I found that applying pressure to the rear camera, though of course not recommended, stops the vibrating and allows the camera to work (sometimes). Applying Pressure to the duo camera does not fix the problem and custom roms, cm based that don't use the extra sensor, still have the problem. Thus the common variable is the rear camera (I hope ). So, I eliminated the duo camera extra sensor as a reason for the failure. Its bound to be either:
1. the glue holding down the rear camera has lost its grip to to drops and or vibration from motorcycle rides or,
2. constant vibration, dropping, etc, has caused part of the camera module to malfunction.
With these two theories, I have decided to buy an oem rear camera module off ebay, and I will install it into my phone. The problem is either the camera or ruined glue, so, considering that the camera module comes with a sticky surface for installation, this fix should theoretically solve the problem, assuming its as simple as I imagine.
I will post some screenshots and results after the camera replacement, which will take place March 14-15, March 21-22, or March 28-29. I can't make any promises because I have no idea when my ebay order will come in. The camera module itself is scheduled to arrive within a few days, but the replacement camera lens (I broke mine while tinkering around) is scheduled to arrive from Hong Kong in who knows how long.
I hope most of you were able to get replacements from Verizon or HTC. Alas I have some physical wear and tear along with custom software on my phone that makes me skeptical about going to either, so that is not an option. For those with broken cameras, I hope I can help you, and if anybody else has attempted this, I would be glad to hear your results.
how to fix camera buzz sound
in the name of allah
first of all i 'm sorry 4 my english.
the problem is sometimes when the htc M8 falls or be on motocycle or any things which moving up & down or vibrate ......... the rear camera (4 ultra pixel)became blurry & a buzz sound appears when the camera is on .so i fix my M8 which have the same problem but unfotunetly you will have to open the M8 for fix it but it's very easy.
1-open the M8 cover (search in google)
2-remove the camera cover (very easy)
attch 1
3-put some piece of tape like in the image (red color =tape piece)
attach 2
4-finally its very important test the camera focus take some photoes
when the buzz sound disappears, the camera clear & focus work fine cover the camera & close the M8
until now my M8 camera work fine is like new
thanks
Recently I have been experiencing weird sounds from my speaker on my new g4. The sound comes through, but it sounds exactly like one of those severe weather interruptions on the television or the radio. It's loud, lots of static, and tinny. But it plays the sound from the video, so I can still hear what someone is saying.. just with this added 'effect'. It always happens on snapchat or Instagram and when I go to YouTube or spotify it sounds fine (it might happen on other apps but this is where I noticed it so far). At first I thought maybe I screwed up my speaker somehow like water damage. But if I did that wouldn't the sound be weird in any app? Is this some sort of known bug or software issue? Is anyone else experiencing this problem, and if so is there any way to fix it? I'm using the Verizon model VS98610B
If your speaker was bad, you would get bad audio with every app. I'm guessing Snapchat and Instagram have low quality audio compared to You Tube and Spotify.

earpiece sparked issues
I'm on my third LG g4. The first G4 I got, I set up and then checked my voicemail following morning to find the earpiece speaker making a tinny crackleing unrecognizable sound. I promptly return the phone to the store where I purchased it to get a g4. I got that one home and set it up on the speaker workeds great! In just a few days I realized that the second phone had the screen glitch that so many others are talking about so within seven days I returned it. I'm now on my third LG g4. I'm probably just beyond three weeks of having this phone and just now my speaker has gone out. Or at least its doing the same thing that it was doing. I can use speaker phone just fine and YouTube and all the other apps work great but the earpiece speaker has twice failed me. This phone has been in a case under a glass screen protector since day one and has never been dropped or damaged in any way. I noticed about 2 days ago that people haven't been able to hear me when I've been on the phone with it. I've been using LG phone for the last 15 years and really haven't had any complaints. I expected the best from this phone and aside from these issues I have gotten what I expected. I got the same phone for my wife at the same time. She is still on her very first g4 with no problems at all. I'm a bit taken aback by this whole thing. I'll be calling today to see what the dealers will do for me and if not I'll be getting a hold of LG to get it under warranty.
Another user and I had similar issues, in another thread:
[Problem] In-Ear Volume Cuts Off?
In my case, rebooting would at least temporarily fix the issue. Does that help with your phone?
Has anyone been on a phone call with their 5x, reclining or lying down for a minute, when the other person complained that your voice suddenly cut out, became muffled, and/or sounds "robotic"?
This is easily reproducible on two new 5x's I bought a month apart. In fact, it's so easy to reproduce that I'm surprised that I haven't (yet) found a thread here on XDA about it. I guess since so few people use their phones to actually talk anymore, and since it only happens when reclining, people probably just chalk it up to bad reception and forget about it.
But there's a thread on the Google support forums and one reddit comment from more than a year ago about it, suggesting to me that this has been happening since the 5x was released. That's not reassuring me about the chances of this being fixed, which is frustrating since the call quality switches from great to terrible entirely based on posture, so it ought to be fixable in software, right? The Google forum thread describes a workaround of disabling the "fluence" noise cancellation entirely, which is not ideal.
(I can't include links to the threads since this is my first post.)

I’m having similar issues, although I never tested whether it might have anything to do with how I’m holding my phone. For me, it’s mostly when I’m having phone calls in my room that people complain to me I that I'd sound like I’m underwater, or standing a million miles away from my phone. Never had anyone tell me those things when I'm talking on the phone outside.
First thought it would be a network issue, but recently had a few Skype calls where the same thing happened.
Just out of curiosity, does your phone’s compass lose its calibration quite often as well?
Google Maps asks me to calibrate the orientation of the phone pretty regularly. A friend of mine with a 5x said that his orientation is always off by a certain amount.
Still, I think the phone can probably be in nearly any orientation while held against someone's ear, so it shouldn't be trusting that to switch into this cancel-almost-everything noise cancellation mode. I'm not sure that there is any use case that is well-served by the way the microphones behave in this mode.
Please try making a voice call and recline for about a minute, and see if the problem repeats itself! You can send feedback about the device in the Settings -> About section.

Yeah, true. That's why I thought it would be a hardware issue and considered sending it in for repair.
I'll let you know about how my phone behaves when I lean back when I get the chance to do that during a voice call.
EDIT: Sorry, started Googleing around only now. I came across the reddit-thread you mentioned, plus a couple other articles that mention poor call quality with Nexus 6P and 5X devices. All of them suspect it's a software issue, but it looks like it's been around since at least late 2015.

I just ran a test. My problem, as silly as it sounds, has apparently been that I don't usually let my phone touch my cheek when making voice calls. I hold the speaker against my ear, but then point the rest of my phone away from my face. When I press the phone against my cheek, everything works as it should. Figured it out by calling my Nexus via Skype.

I've seen other people report that, and my 5x's also drastically muffle my voice the instant they're not touching my face, but they both ALSO do that after leaning back for a few moments, regardless of how firmly the phone is pressed to my face. Does yours not do that?

Tested it again and I'm sorry, but noise cancellation doesn't go rampant on mine when I lean back. It's all been as it should.

Which Android version are you on? Also, did you try lying down, or just leaning back a little? I thought the problem must be widespread because it's been happening on two different phones I ordered a month apart.
