I've had my T800 since pretty much launch day. It was my go to tab until recently when I got fed up with charging it every few hours and bought a Huawei Mediapad 5 10.8. I have passed the T800 on to my wife for reading, casual gaming etc, and I will still use it for monitoring my DJI Phantom 3 Pro flights. But the battery life is still a real bugbear. I have been considering replacing the battery, but a friend suggested using a different kernel to see if it helps improve the battery life.
So I would appreciate if some of you could give me your experiences with different kernels, and how they have affected your battery life.
This is not how things work.
The high battery drain is usually caused by two major reasons. First - the bad battery cell state, caused by extensive wear. This is fixed only by replacement of the battery. Second - the software locks preventing your tab from going into deep sleep state (aka "Doze"). These locks can be inside kernel but as a kernel developer and maintainer of Team Exynos5420 I closely keep track of patches applied to the kernel source and I have zero issues with sleep.
Much more probable, however, is a bad Android application you installed causing a wakelock. Say, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are known battery hogs. Identifying them is quite easy using Settings - Battery pane giving younthe app list consuming the most.
If you want an advice regarding the choice of kernel, I'd recommend using LineageOS official ROM for T800. Its kernel is the most stable and tested on many devices to have zero issues with sleep. And don't be afraid of replacing battery - after 3 or 4 years of daily use it surely becomes dead. New battery costs $35 to $50, and I am going to get one for my T805 anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Its really hard to tell with the T800 whether the battery is on the way out, as battery life has never been great anyway. But yeah, I'm gonna stick a fresh battery in there and change the stock rom. Its a small price to pay for reviving such a good tab.

I love my s3. but once I updated to jb the freaking battery life is so bad.... it is constantly draning withiut me doing anything in it. And today gmail was on the top of the list. I didnt even use gmail today. Can someone please guide me and tell me how I fix this? Do I really need to go back to ics. It would be worth gathering more info here before moving on to more drastic steps like flashing another ROM to deal with battery issues.
Can you start by posting screenshots of your battery life screens (go here for some examples of what I mean)? The things I'd personally be most interested in seeing are screen on duration and your wireless connectivity; if you're leaving your screen on and/or you're in areas with poor network connectivity (wifi or mobile), those can both tend to eat into battery life in various ways - for example, e-mail apps (this probably includes Gmail, but as I use other mail apps I don't know for sure) can eat battery life in areas with poor network connectivity in their futile efforts to maintain a connection to the mail server.
Apart from those basic drains, you can get a better idea of what's eating battery life by identifying causes of wakelocks, i.e. what's keeping your phone awake when it should be asleep. BetterBatteryStats is my go-to for this. The info it generates is really helpful for figuring out what applications are eating battery life and how they're doing so.
Hope this is of use.
Flashing a rom is not drastic
It was only a suggestion based on all the reports of battery issues with the official JB release.

Icantell you right now I just checked and the kernel wakelock that is preventing my phone to enter deep sleep is msm_otg. How can I disable this?
Some digging on my part suggests that that wakelock is USB-related, though theories as to the cause vary. Some of the suggested solutions I've seen are using a different USB cable to charge the phone, or doing a factory reset.
My girlfriend just got a P6 and asked me for advice on battery-saving and I have noted there is no thread on power-saving optimizations and actual results so I have started one.
Can you please post your battery-related results and any optimization that you have done about this?!
What firmware?
How much battery discharge do you see over day?
Even more relevant - how much battery discharge do you see over night?

Newest firmware is meant to be good, also theres a few power saving options in the menus, some users have reported that they get up to 2 days moderate use

Thank you for your feedback and I hope others will provide info too (and ideally some numbers).
Just to place things into perspective and show the kind of numbers that are most relevant for such a thread - my i9300 over night has a battery discharge of around 2% over 8 hours (that is registered on the voice network so that I can get voice calls but with WiFi off and data off; most apps are also set to only update on WiFi or manually anyway). In order to achieve that I use a custom kernel, power-saving enabled on a Samsung-derived ROM with root and then Titanium Backup to freeze anything that I use less than once/week and Greenify for almost everything else.
I plan on trying some of the above on my girlfriend's phone next weekend or the one after that, and until then I was interested to learn more about the subject.

I also have a samsung galaxy S3 Gt-i9300 and have rather moderate battery life, last night i lost 20% ! I have the Boeffla kernel, which do you use?
Huawei are meant to be good at this sort of thing, im getting real tired of only having a phone capable of 2-3.5 hours of screen on time ( S3, Nexus 4 ) So, im hoping the huawei can deliver that or ill be going to something with a bigger battery ( Nexus 5 and underclock it too 1.5ghz maybe less to save some major battery life )
I also would like to see what users are getting in terms of numbers, screen on time would be great

Currently I am mostly using Googy-Max, but over weekends I normally do a lot of experimenting and for instance last night I noted an increase from 2% to 4% (over 8 hours), which could be from moving from Googy-Max 1.7.5 to 1.7.6 or from moving from modem EMF1 to EMG4 - for the moment I moved back to Googy-Max 1.7.5 and I will see over the next night if it was the kernel, the modem or both. Also as a note - I get about 4-5 hours of screen time, but with low use and I "adapt" the brightness (I have some profiles defined with LLAMA and I keep the brightness on lowest auto when I am indoor and only go to max when I go outdoors for more than a few minutes).
That being said 20% is extreme - I have only seen such numbers in CM 10.2 (where it is said that there is a bug that prevents the modem from sleeping after a cellphone call, but the last word is that it might now be fixed). Either way on i9300 it is a well-known situation that Sammy ROMs (after some degree of de-bloating) still are a huge lot better with power-saving than CM. Which was the kind of info I was looking here about the Ascend P6

I am still answering here since I believe what I am about to say could also be very relevant for the P6.
The thing is that in my experience the kernel is only relevant for battery life once every single other problem was fixed!
In other words if the over-night (8h or so) battery drain is 20% then your gains from the kernel will not be very relevant (and technically Boeffla and Googy-Max are not very far apart in this regard). If you are on a CM 10.2 (or 10.1?) the main advantage that I see is that Googy-Max will let you keep that (I suggest to move it to secondary) and then install a de-bloated Sammy as primary and then see for a few weeks how is battery life between the two.
And another thing that could be also relevant to the P6 - on my phone I am replacing the "stock" launcher and 'stock" dialer with something that for me is a lot snappier (but that remains to be seen if it will be well-received by my girlfriend on her P6 - or if it will improve anything).
But generally BetterBatteryStats and Greenify tend to improve battery life (sometimes a lot), so it looks very likely that I will have to root that P6.

Ive got to hand it to you, i had a good look on the googy kernel and found many, many battery optimizations and found threads to do with underclocking, undervolting and other tweaks and the batter life is amazing, im only running it at 800mhz and its really smooth and fast still, so thanks for introducing it to me, its made my galaxy S3 a whole lot better.
Although there is one bug, ill turn on phone, connect the WiFi, turn the screen off and it will disable the WiFi :S im on 1.7.5 and have asked if 1.7.6 will fix it, fingers crossed
Hello,
The battery of my OnePlus 3 has to be fully charged to survive a day. I want to keep my phone as performance, camera and display are still fine and new phones have so many downsides somehow (no headphone jack, weird notch situation, high SAR values, oversized,..).
What are my options to extend the battery life?
- replace the battery with a OnePlus 3T battery?
- which custom kernel or custom rom do you suggest?
- other suggestions?
Currently i am on the Pie community beta. Battery life has gotten worse when i updated, i can tell you that. My personal preference for the next OS would be a privacy-focused OS.

Have a go at the skydragon ROM it's normally very good with battery but for more privacy focused you'd have to flash lineage with no gapps and use alternatives from f-droid or yalp store for things like playstore and messaging etc...

@orawnnd
I wouldn't advise a 3T battery. It may create issues. In addition, the 3 and 3T batteries were likely manufactured a couple of years back and sitting on the shelf all this time. So they may deteriorate fast. Still a better option than going for 3rd party batteries.
Regarding ROMs, the OOS Pie Open Beta has been excellent in all respects, including battery drain, for me. May be a clean flash and not restoring apps will make a difference for you.
As for SkyDragon, I was using it for sometime and it was also excellent in all respects. But, of late, there are complaints of unexplained battery drain in its thread, not for all but atleast for some. I have not tested LOS in my OP3 though I run it in my N4. Again excellent results.

This is true. Settled on LOS after trying all other roms, they had explainable battery drain issues with time. Even tho, I don't see a plus in battery saving on LOS. Battery performance is "OKAY". LOS is just smoother.
IMHO stock is the best for battery. :good:
I recommend you install accubattery from the play store( free app) and check your battery health before you decide on a battery change. It also lets you see how much the battery has degraded over time. My OnePlus 3 is currently at 86% life

1. Replacing OP3 with OP3T battery won't work. This is debunked already - don't try it.
2. Sadly your only options:
a) Replace battery with new one.
b) Flash custom ROM onto your phone. Read comments about latest build on every ROM thread - people point out things like battery life etc. e.g. SkyDragon latest build seems to have battery issues (people reporting it in comments).
c) Power bank. Really. Things like this is also an option, but I don't see any on ebay for OP3.
I'm ordered a battery for my op3,this battery it's for op3t,in about a month I will tell you how it's it.

I'm on official pie rom from OnePlus.
Have you got anything important on the device
use any custom kernel that supports cpu frequency changing. Underclock cpu to 60%(bit cluster have huge impact on battery) when you dont heavily use your op3/t . You will notice significant battery improvement.
Hello, I have A Pixel XL 32GB and its been 3 weeks since i last replaced my battery, well I have tried every kind of rom and kernels in the forum but i keep seeing Kernel(Android OS) on my battery chart higher than any app and next to it is Android System ( Using GSAM) and no matter what network i use either WIFI or Mobile Data i keep seeing drain. Plus the phone randomly heats up while just browsing and drains. For example while browsing facebook and the temperature at 35 and increases to 42 and i can feel the device going warm. Also for the battery, well it is a original battery and i trust the source that i got it from(using accubattery if i am not mistaken it reported 95% battery health). there are also instances where the phone is just cool and when i monitor it using gsam android system and kernel is no where to be found ( given that the phone just got unplugged). so far i have tried stock android pie January patch and August patch, android 10 October and December patch, Lineage OS,Bootleggers,EvolutionX2.1 elementalX also PureZ kernel KirasakuraQ, Kingkernel.
currently on Bootleggers and stock kernel
Same behavior don't know what to do help
've never had good results when I've replaced the battery in any phone or tablet I've owned. What source did you use for the battery? I'm considering replacing the battery in my Pixel XL, but I'm not too hopeful. Some people report good results with batteries from Ifixit.
Not quite sure about that, I sourced my battery from my local repair shop that was most recommended in my area. past customers had good results with battery and seems to be fine and doing great with their batteries, but i'm sure that that they've outsourced (out from the country) it because it took me months to receive it.
the problem is i'm always seeing Android System or Google Play services consuming my battery, there are times where the phone won't drain and actually give me decent battery where i can see system and google play services at the bottom consuming 1% of the battery.
Did they tell you how old the battery was or when it was made? Original or generic?

I never wrote you didn't, just a simple question.
If you want to rule out the battery, factory reset with no account on stock apps and see how the battery holds up. If it holds, then slowly start adding everything back while monitoring your battery stats. :good:
I'm on Android 13 and was hoping this would sort out the overheating problem I had with Android 12 (I read in a few places that it would), but it did not. The phone gets very warm when charging, and hot when streaming video, and just generally through simple use, nothing particularly demanding. I haven't rooted this phone because I did not see the need, but I would consider it if it was the only way to fix the problem. Is anyone experiencing the same, and does anyone have a solution?
I could be wrong but generally speaking in my experience, going from one major upgrade to another the phone works a bit harder to re-train itself to your use patterns. I just did my upgrade yesterday and experienced some slight to moderate heat as well. I also noticed that battery is draining a bit faster which I think again is part of the process. I'm going to give it a week or so and if I'm right it should improve.
I'm biased because I've had my Pixel 6 Pro rooted (and updated every month) since last November, and I also use Kirisakura custom kernel with its companion apps and currently have the one app set to the maximum battery savings.
So I can't really compare to 100% stock unrooted with the stock kernel, as I'm only briefly on the stock unrooted kernel each month after I manually flash the latest update.
Several others have commented, and I've experienced too, that with Android 13, we've no longer experienced as severe higher temperatures when charging. I don't remember if the others were rooted and using the same custom kernel, or if these were general Android 13 comments, so your mileage may vary. Sorry I can't give you any more concrete information.
Good luck!
Granted this is for my 4a5g but I wouln't be suprised if/when I get a 6 that its battery performance would be less than stellar after a good days use of phone and/or screen and radio/network. i.e. stock. Before I went to Lineage on my 4a5g I think my battery would cut a good 30-50+ percent each day. I put lineage on it and I poop you not, can go from a 75% to around 20% in about 5-6+ days. I tend to have my screen brightness around a little less than 1/4th on the slider bar.
When I had an HTC M8, after around 2 or so years (this was around 2016/7 or so. got phone oct '14) on the stock firmware the phone couln't keep it on for more than a day. Ran ViperRom for a bit then switched to cm/lineage and that stretched my usability of the phone another 5 years. It got to the point where the phone would shut off when it got to around %50 charge and go ding dong and turn off--without pluggin it in I had about 8 hours run time on it. My battery was beyond gone and no way would I have gotten that usability on the stock rom.
So, to answer your question, yes, trying different roms and kernels (rooting) could be to your advantage to prolong the life and performance of your phone.
Even if you choose to run the stock OS, with root, you could disble any bloat running in background. Kill any programs/services leeching CPU (and hence battery) cycles. You could definately make it run more efficient for YOU. Maybe not for the next guy who needs his facebook, twitter, ticktok apis and stuff loaded and at the ready. Everyone is different. But they tend to make the phones (they think) for everyone. in mind and as a result, device performance and lifespan become affected.
I definitely have heating issues and this is on a warranty exchange. The 2 previous P6Ps had all the same issues as this current device.
My phone was hot on A12 (41/45°) and since i clean flashed A13 and wiped it is cold (32/35°) for the same usage.
Greetings.
Good topic.
I have bought this phone a day before. I'm facing device heating even under simple tasks like scrolling messengers, browsing etc.
Previously I had OnePlus 7 Pro (Snapdragon 855), that one was cold all time except while charging or playing games.
However, Pixel looks warm or even hot even upon light using.
I'm a bit confused about that.
Is it a common problem of this device? Or probably exactly my device is affected?
I haven't faced overheating or alerts about that, however, it feels hot for my hands that got used to feel a cold phone while low load.
Currently, I have about 37-38 degrees while browsing on XDA and writing this post.
Just wondering that digits you have?
I did a warranty exchange on my P6P for a different issue and I'm glad I did. My replacement device has much better thermals than my original. My original one would get quite hot while charging and restoring apps and was almost uncomfortable to hold and to the touch. Could always try a warranty exchange and see if the replacement device is better for you. Also, Kiri kernel has been reported to help with the thermals. I've seen several reports of users commenting that their device runs cooler. Good luck!
I had heating issues and battery issues when I first received my P6P. Once I got it out of the box, I set it up and restored backups, rooted it, updated to android 13 without wiping, rooted again, and then flashed the Kirisakura kernel. I decided to try and flash android 13 again but keeping the -w flag to wipe userdata and didnt restore my backups and I've had amazing battery life and no overheating. If you haven't yet, try doing a factory reset. As simple as it sounds it may very well help
My fully stock P6P (on A12) gave an overheat warning yesterday while we were having a day out, it was only 22°C although we were in and out of the sun as the clouds rolled by but the phone was showing 46°C after being sat in my pocket.
I think Google have released the worlds hottest running phone, i have never owned a phone that heats up so much and so fast.

Thing is I have never experienced overheating on any phone (that i have owned) in UK before, using an Exynos as the basis of Tensor and then whacking an extra big core in it was a pretty bad idea unless you live in a fridge.
