I love my s3. but once I updated to jb the freaking battery life is so bad.... it is constantly draning withiut me doing anything in it. And today gmail was on the top of the list. I didnt even use gmail today. Can someone please guide me and tell me how I fix this? Do I really need to go back to ics. I go to high school and I never use my phone but still it drains... do I really need to go back to ics? My battery life on ics was amazing but I wantdd this update and now I am regretting this update so much. Please help?

It would be worth gathering more info here before moving on to more drastic steps like flashing another ROM to deal with battery issues.
Can you start by posting screenshots of your battery life screens (go here for some examples of what I mean)? The things I'd personally be most interested in seeing are screen on duration and your wireless connectivity; if you're leaving your screen on and/or you're in areas with poor network connectivity (wifi or mobile), those can both tend to eat into battery life in various ways - for example, e-mail apps (this probably includes Gmail, but as I use other mail apps I don't know for sure) can eat battery life in areas with poor network connectivity in their futile efforts to maintain a connection to the mail server.
Apart from those basic drains, you can get a better idea of what's eating battery life by identifying causes of wakelocks, i.e. what's keeping your phone awake when it should be asleep. BetterBatteryStats is my go-to for this. The info it generates is really helpful for figuring out what applications are eating battery life and how they're doing so.
Hope this is of use.
Flashing a rom is not drastic
It was only a suggestion based on all the reports of battery issues with the official JB release.

Icantell you right now I just checked and the kernel wakelock that is preventing my phone to enter deep sleep is msm_otg. How can I disable this?
Some digging on my part suggests that that wakelock is USB-related, though theories as to the cause vary. Some of the suggested solutions I've seen are using a different USB cable to charge the phone, or doing a factory reset.

Folks,
Finally got a ROM I like and after a few months wth the desire I wondered what is Good/Bad in terms of battery life and background apps.
I downloaded SetCPU from the market so I could at least contribute a bit.
I've now found myself with a Battery monitor, Juice Plotter, 3D Watchdog, Juice Defender, APM Droid, News & Weather, Advanced Task Killer (not running in the background) and the usual Android stuff.
Are there any things good or bad generally. I must say that SetCPU seems to deliver fairly well. I guess some of the other stuff is redundant. Also I'm not certain how to measure how these, and other, apps affect the system.
Any general help would be appreciated.

Colin,
Lots of people get hung up on battery performance, I've always found it to be pretty good.
I've found that with normal use I get at least 24 hours, which is heaps as I charge it overnight.
In my experience there are 3 things that use up the battery - the screen, gps and 3g. The other thing I have found is that your radio version can contribute to how much battery you use - I normally go with the latest, however some radios work better in some places and carriers than others - so there's a bit of trial and error involved.
Oh, and get rid of all your battery monitoring apps - they will most likely be using more battery than they save.....
Thanks,
I'm running the latest Radio at the moment, I've not tried any between the old one I had and this one.
I'll get rid of the Battery Monitor as it seems much better now that I've got SetCPU running on it. The SetCPU profiles might not be perfect at the moment but the app certainly helps.
I was annoyed once when the battery got to 15%, the phone piped up Low Battery then the stupid thing just switched off a couple of seconds later, made calling a taxi a pain.

Hi,
all Rom threads have a rather big amount of discussions about battery life. It seems battery life varies between 8 hours to several days. Several reasons for this are addressed and one might check this first before anything else
1. Usage. If you use your phone you discharge it. Use it heavily with all whistle and bells turned on and you discharge it quickly.
2. Apps. Some apps like to phone home, sending or fetching frequently data. For some apps this is obvious. However, some might be hidding this or they are just bad programmed.
Using Powertutor and juiceplotter help to identify those battery eating apps. E. g., VoIP- or Mailclients, etc. are candidates being for battery sucking monsters.
3. Signal reception might make a different. The radio modules trying to minimize the sending power to save battery. If you put the phone in an box, bag or whatever the radio module might switch to a higher sending level to reach the cell tower.
In general you can't do much, simply choice "good" locations wherever possible.
4. Cell search and switching. Using a train or any other fast moving vehicle might require to switch very frequently between different cell towers. Every switch consumes power since data will be exchanged. If no cell signal is found the phone starts searching for one which consumes more power. Switch to flight mode if possible.
This are already steps which helps to safe a big chunk of the batteryand all this steps are completely rom independent.
In my opinion roms might contribute only to a small amount to the battery power. Maybe there is a buggy program or some settings are not optimized. However any more or less stable Rom should result in a rather similar battery life time.
Same is true for the kernel. Sure undervoltage, different schedulers, etc. might all change something regarding the power consumption. However this could not explain this very different reported battery life times. Its more in the range of +- 2 hours.
I know it was discussed sometimes already. I believe that some reported battery problems are due to a wrong combination of libs and settings for the used radio module.
Many people upgraded to the newest radio, however the local carrier might slightly modified settings to there specific needs. Furthermore, the might use a special tailored library enhanced by functions for there particular network.
This was given, at least for the Japanese carrier Softbank.
build.prop contains some special calls and a look into the library libhtc_ril show corresponding functions.
If roms carrier a different version of libhtc_ril and does not call settings in build.prop people on the particular carrier might observe battery drains.
Even worth the present situation creates random combination of radio firmware, build.prop, and libhtc_ril.
What might be needed is a installation routine for a Rom, which is capable to modify and replace above mentioned files for the given carrier.
I know that this would work since I'm doing it manually every time I install a different rom.
Would be glad to hear other opinions on this topic.
sure, the use of my phone make different battery drain but with the same use, this same battery drain change with the rom installed in this same phone! and the radio or the kernel of this same rom can make also difference in the battery drain (cf DeFroST for exemple...) with a scale between 8 and 20 hours!!! so i think the rom have a lot importance in battery drain ;-)
Hi,
I think one has to differentiate between an potential bug in a rom which might drain the battery and a "stable" rom.
From the technical point you can tweak rom and kernel to the max but this would never result in 4 times longer battery.
I would not say thay you can't get a kernel highly optimized for performance which might drain much more. However, in general all roms come with power-savvy kernels the small differences between those kernels could in my opinion not make such a big differences.
Same is well known for laptops. Sure a stock kernel might drain faster but even if I tweak out the very last options in the kernel settings I could never improve battery life time by 400%. That would be instead of 2 hours my laptop would suddenly hold 8 or more hours.
I belive the same is true to roms. There are some which emphase light the use of light apps and avoid animations and other battery eating eye candy. However, it can't result in an difference of 3-4 times, unlike something is simply wrong within the rom.
The main point is, nobody seems to give attention to the different modifications different carriers introduce in stock roms.
Thus, using a rom for which libs and settings come originally from T-mobile UK might fail heavily for Softbank Japan, or Verizon US.
What would be needed is
1. Awareness of the different carrier-based settings.
2. An application which is capable to modify and replace the mentioned files specific for the used carrier.
Definitely, the battery life should be associated with ROM.The models of running ROM are different-----how the SD card works..
I've done everything I know to do to help with her battery life. She has a hardware 0003 Evo, the exact same as mine. Both of us have Sprint Lovers ROM with PRI 1.77. I have Netarchy 4.3.4, she has 4.2.2 because 4.3.4 didn't work well on hers. The only real difference between our setups is mine. I have Titanium Backup with most of the useless apps frozen and UltimateJuice with the latest JuiceDefender Beta. I also use LauncherPro.
I've noticed that her device pulls high mA's when discharging. I believe I saw one over 1100mA earlier while looking at something on her phone.
I realize that my setup may be a bit more battery efficient than hers, but her drain should not be as high. She literally has to plug up several times a day, when I can go 2 days on a charge.
So does anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to have to swap out her phone.
you should try nets 4.3.2 cfs havs less, or the no havs those are very stable and great with battery life, before you flash fill battery wipe caches and battery stats, flash kernel
Try installing the 4.3.4 kernel again but play around with the versions. Try a less-havs if more-havs doesnt play well. Maybe even no-havs. Try installing juice defender on hers also and see how well it plays out.
Update her PRI. I run the most up to date pri and don't have any battery problems. It's probably that I can almost guarantee it. Some phones work better with different set ups then others. To update you can use caulkins flashable update zip. Its in the dev section in the first couple pages if you don't feel like searching. Just be careful when flashing.
get a 3500 battery, or maybe her battery is defective. You're a sprint service technician? come on now

Well, I'm not versed on sense kernels, but perhaps try a less aggressive havs kernel on hers. Does he keep her 3G on all the time, cuz that'll be a battery drainer.
What she could do is change roms, or if she's willing to, try out AOSP.
Calibrate the battery.
3500!! is the answer. You can't do anything with the stock battery. Does she give it a full charge often? My girlfriend only charges were phone a few hours each night and complaines that it dies often... and thats with the 3500... Even if the light is gree and it shows 100% done, its not really done. Let that thing charge for 8 hours straight. Google Bump Charging... that helps too.
In addition to all things suggested here, never underestimate the power of turning off auto-sync and background data. I keep background data off all day and then turn it on for five minutes or so every night to check gmail, etc. If your gf is anything like the girls I mess with then she's probably just killing her battery by updating her Facebook status twice an hour and tweeting every time her cat farts. Not much you can do to help if that's the case...
Social mongers pay for their insolence in battery life. For the rest of is, there's the background data toggle

Actually, she doesn't, so I'll probably end up doing that. I tried her on CM7 but she didn't like it, gave her more problems than usefulness.
If she's not a big background data user then you should definitely toggle it off. With comparable usage, I typically get twice as much life-per-charge with background toggled off than on regardless of what ROM or kernel I'm running. It's the biggest little thing you can do.

Hello Everyone,
Many times while searching the internet for Nexus information, the search keeps having me come to this forum so I decided to become a member. Just got for my G-Nexus the other day, its replacing a Droid 3. Nothing really wrong with the Droid (well), but it was my first physical keyboard phone and I wasn't feeling it, and I heard so many good things about the Nexus I knew I had to have one.
I've had it less then a week now, and so far I love it. Though the one thing I must say I am not crazy about, which seems to be a common complaint, is the battery. It drains WAY too fast. Today though seemed more then ridiculous. I left my house @ 8:45 am @ 100% (right off the charger). Made some use of it on the bus, but nothing much (no calls, no video, no music). Already by 11:30am, I was @ 39%! I mean come on, I didn't even use it that much. Yes, I did notice I left the WiFi on, but it should not have drained that fast. Tuesday I used the device moderately and I was able to go home after having the device on for 9 hours and still have around 40% to spare. Its a shame they cannot make a battery that can accommodate such a great phone.
So some questions: Is it really necessary for me to root this thing to get its full potential? I never rooted a phone before. When I bought the phone, I got a shiny gel case that Verizon sells for like $20 - if I did get the extended battery and door, would this case still fit? I am thinking no. Is the ext. battery even worth getting?
I have more questions, but I will peruse the forums and see what everyone else is saying. So in all I just wanted to intro myself and say I am happy to be part of the forum!
Your battery should definitely not be draining this fast. Install better battery stats(look around XDA) and look at what partial wakelocks you have. Try to remember any recent apps that might have been causing the drain
The 2100mah battery will fit. If you're looking at the 3900mah extended batteries, those have their own custom backplates and won't fit.
I've read that the 2100mah battery adds about an hour of juice.

Sorry to sound dumb, but what do you by "battery stats"..?
And I am not sure what a wakelock is either - if you could explain
Hey,
I got my Galaxy Nexus this week too. This is my third full day of using and I get good 10+ hrs of usage each day. I use it a lot too. At least 2-3 hrs of talking, about 50+ texts, synching 4 emails, and browsing/streaming an hour or two each day.
You should check what drains your battery the most and go from there.

'better battery stats' is an app. go look for it. there's an XDA version
your phone goes into 'deep sleep' to conserve power. wake locks are when something refuses to let it get to that state and locks it awake. This is major cause of battery drain.
Better battery stats is available on the Play Store (ugh hate that name) but the dev is nice enough to give it to xda members for free:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Aside from looking at wakelocks, go to Settings>Battery, then look at the list of stuff (in descending order) that's eating your battery. I went to watch a movie once at 90%, when it was done the battery was at 18% and I never even touched my phone. I checked that list and apparently Facebook killed the battery. Try and look for apps that might be using up a lot and either uninstall them, replace them, or trun off features that might be causing the drain

Root it?
It's a Nexus man. They're fantastic for root users.
All the roms are AOSP...
And bug free (or...mostly. AS bug free as any google build, generally).

I agree with you that the Nexus is fantastic for root, but it's not necessary for all users. I rooted mine because I was use to with my old HTC HD2, but ,except for changing rom, it's useless when you just get your phone.
I think that you can keep the stock rom, and don't root it. One day you will maybe need it, but the stock rom is very nice, it's enough to start (that's what I did with mine).
I noticed you are on Verizon, bad cell reception can chew your battery for lunch too.
There's something floating around in the development section (sprint I think) called battery mod.
Of course, youd need to root and unlock your device to get it working (takes all of about 5 minutes).
I also had this battery draining problem, but installing a custom from with a power saver governor and the battery mod, it'll drain 1% every 30min-1hour. Its essentially in "deep sleep", as the CPU winds down to 0mhz, instead of the standard 350. With this comes a lower CPU voltage, so less energy is wasted.
All in all, this is a great phone once you tame it.
Look for Black Ice ROM. Its probably one of the best here because it let's you choose a stock look or a custom look

Hello all. I received my M8 about a month ago, international version and am very happy with it thus far. Amazing phone, gorgeous design; I love it. However, an issue that has risen is poor battery life. Included is a screenshot via GSam battery monitor of my use today. The level of battery after just over 2 hours of screen time is disappointing to say the least. I texted a few people today, made a few calls, read a few articles online, and watched a few videos over WiFi. Basically, no activities that should cause this much drain. The absolute best battery life I've been able to get is 4.5 hours, and that's using minimum brightness and keeping data off. I noticed that the app usage section seems to be the biggest culprit, and have included a screenshot of what apps are running to help you all help me figure out what's going on. The only thing keeping me from unlocking the bootloader and trying all of the glorious ROM's this community has to offer is the fear of me having a bad battery, which I know is highly unlikely. I'm running stock Lollipop by the way. Factory reset was done after upgrade to ensure a clean install. Please, any and all advice and help is welcome. Thank you in advance!
Anyone?
