I installed Dolphin Browser on my phone a few days ago because I love the browser but I noticed my data went up a lot quicker than it ever has. Luckily I have Unlimited data but it's currently at 11GB. Dolphin Browser used 7.34GB while in the Background which is odd. I noticed the problem when I would leave my phone on over night at 70% and wake up to a very low battery or a dead phone.
It's the best browser I've ever used but I don't know what would cause Dolphin to use that much data. Any ideas?

Why not just use the stock browser? Or at least Chrome? I haven't used Dolphin since the Moto Cliq lol. It's definitely not one of the better browsers, especially on the note 2.

I seem to remember Dolphin doing the same things on my Vibrant and haven't bothered with it since. Definitely try another browser. The others don't have that problem.
It's definitely a hog, but I can't do without it. I keep it frozen (along with most of my apps) when not using it.
Because it has all the add on capability so it's constantly on to search for update and stuff

7 GB on background, lol. You definitely have a virus sending network attacks or you leave videos buffering in the background. Is one or the other no buts.

Its not a virus.. Well unless you consider The Browser itself a virus. Its not but it does come close.Look at the permissions on dolphin browser. I once seen a article how it pushes adds to the browser in the back ground and Makes clicks on your behalf to pay the developer money .
I have not tried using it in a Long time like many above its definitely malware.
Just my thoughts
any phone I've ever had has ran like crap the day after I installed dolphin so I agree also with above its may have been good once but now it's just a system slower and I guess a data killer too so hey Dolphin browser is a double threat

For it to use 7gb on background is had to do a lot more than push ads. Anyway i used Dolphin on every phone and never had a problem.
i dont mean to bump an old thread, but i have just found this out today, i have adblock plus and have been using dolphin when not on wifi for the last 2 days, i have been letting the device sleep with it running in the background and i have checked today and have used my data for this month aswell as gone over $7, 250mb and 160mb today,
i dont know what it has been doing while its asleep, today i checked and it was at 160mb remaining then 1 hour later i got a message about nearly going over my cap 10mb remaining then when i checked it had gone past that.
its definitely spyware because why else would it be doing while idling no webpages open, i dont use its addons just stock without its ux improvement program, no dolphin connect either, i didnt block its privileges via pdroid unfortunately
if you read their privacy policy it could of drained it through, update service and push notifications as well as the other ones listed below,
dolphin engine beta, may use the information without your permission, if you disagree please do not use the application
i do use other browsers without issues opera, stock, i just wished i saw this thread earlier, time to remove it
other than the security flaw 2 years back there must be something else its sending back to its server

I use boat browser and no issues. Dolphin always gave me issues so I left it and never looked back.
It's definitely also my favorite browser !
Why?
- fast
- displays Facebook very nice
- javascripting, html5 works
- youtube works fine
- handy settings sync
I'm using Maxthon also, which might compete.
I've tried others such as Boat but it didn't suit me.
Pitty Opera has become so bad in displaying webpages.
So I discovered the same problem here via data usage app.
IMO it's facebook that's connecting all the time?
They only way is to shut down the browser every time?
Came across this thread doing a google search for other people noticing battery drain with Dolphin.
I've never noticed any unusual data usage, but I wonder if that's related to automatic updating. I have my phone and tablet set to only update when on WiFi and I'm on WiFi quite often.
I have recently noticed a ton of battery drain though, especially on the tablet. Took me awhile to figure out which app(s) might be responsible, but I found that when issuing a Force Stop after finishing with Dolphin, my battery tends to level off. Once I exit the browser, its not listed as running in the app killer that I have, but from the App manager the Force Stop option is available, so I guess its still running after all.
Attached is a photo showing normal battery levels to the left, then the sudden battery drain next to it. Then the battery charging and continued excessive drain once unplugged, followed by the battery leveling off when killing everything I found running in the OS (not specifically Dolphin by itself). After this though, I routinely FS Dolphin after using it and the battery's been behaving much more normally.
Its a pain, but it just runs so much better than other browsers I've used..
Using "Greenify app" maybe helps. ..

Hello,
I recently used a data recovery app on my Galaxy Nexus to recover some deleted photos. The application worked a little too well, recovered about 16,000 jpegs and pngs, saving which I ended up with around 350 MB of disk space left on my phone.
When I noticed my phone getting slow, I deleted everything, did a factory reset, a clean wipe and installed a CM 11 nightly - nothing helps. Though on 3G, apps take forever to get downloaded and installed. I need to sit and wait on the installed apps to open, even making a phone call is a dreadful experience now.
Is there anything that I can do to get my phone back to speed?
Not sure if it'll work for you but this really helped fixed lag issue for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix
If that doesn't work, I read before that when reflashing a ROM to first factory wiping 2-3 times in a row.
Also seems to helps with lag to allows keep >4gb free storage.

Thank you, Isajoo. I tried this tool now, got an error saying that some partitions are not supported. Anyway, I have tried it on the partition it supports, let me play around with my phone for a while and see if it has helped improve anything.
Btw, after deleting everything, I have around 6GB of free space...
I guess its working! Though its still lags while taking/making calls and unlocking the screens, the downloading/installing and many other operations are considerably faster now.
Thanks a ton, mate. I was absolutely clueless before...

Hi everyone,
I've been trying new ROMs and kernels since I got my M8 about a year ago. Ever since I switched away from Sense ROMs to GPE and AOSP, I've noticed that my phone has become debilitatingly slow on a semi-regular basis until I do a clean flash (and even then, the speed lasts for only a couple days max after restoring my apps).
Specifically:
- In general, apps and system activity will freeze mid-use
- Phone calls will sometimes cause my phone to vibrate for a bit before letting me act on them (and even so, my phone may be too frozen to act at all)
- Screen power-on sometimes takes a few tries
- Major 3rd party like Uber, Snapchat, etc- will take a long time to load and stutter more frequently during use
- Camera takes a good amount of time to load regardless of app
I'm mostly trying to figure out if there's something wrong with my approach to ROM selection, backup/restoring, or kernel configuration, because none of this feels how using a year-old flagship should.
Here's my current flow between ROMs: Backup all user apps, accounts, and other ROM-agnostic attributes with Titanium Pro; factory reset with TWRP; install ROM + gapps with TWRP; reboot, log in with Google to install Titanium; restore all missing apps + system data with Titanium. I've used DH's GPE, BlissPop, CM 12.1, and Candy5- all with the same result of general slowness and unusability after a couple days of use.
Things to note which I suspect may be possible culprits:
- I haven't ever cleared out internal storage, but try to keep ~5 gb free at a time.
- I have 3-4 Google accounts synced at once.
- I regularly use Facebook, Snapchat, and Uber/Lyft- all of which feel somewhat bloated and don't adhere to Android guidelines too well as far as I can tell
Things I've tried to cut down on lag:
- Greenified aforementioned bloated apps
- Messed with kernel I/O, clock speed, and governor settings with little or temporary success (I stick to stock settings now)
- Clearing running apps regularly (which I hate to do- Android should be able to handle processes just fine)
Currently running Candy5, latest build on Verizon.
Hopefully I've been thorough enough in my descriptions to give someone an idea of how to make my phone work as well as I know it should. Looking forward to getting to the bottom of this, and thanks so much in advance for anyone who wants to put the time in to help me out.
Only thing to suggest is not to restore apps and accounts. Set it up fresh from the beginning and run the basic needs for a week see if that helps. Terrible issues can appear when you restore apps that are originally installed on another rom.

Have you had much luck with this? I'm also experiencing unbearable lag no matter which ROM I choose. Yo! Saw your post a bit earlier. I finally go around to doing a full wipe (that's system/data/cache/internal, not just a factory reset), and only backing up the essentials (no apps- essentially just homescreen layout). Then, I installed DirtyUnicorns and the linked GAPPS, then restored apps from my Google account instead of Titanium. Been going strong for 2 days or so now, but I can't be sure that'll stick around. Honestly, if a full wipe doesn't fix these issues, I'm convinced nothing will, so I'm hoping for the best.
Slim zero gapps package works well for me also.

I also had a feeling it could have been a full wipe issue (need click on advance to get to other wipes).
Always let google install my apps also (57 apps).
Never have had a lag problem with Dirty Unicorns.

Yeah, I'm kinda doing the same thing now too. Previously I didn't quite use TB to restore my apps like you did; I just restored the data manually for certain apps, but I'm not even doing that this time. I'm just slowly installing apps one by one and giving it a day or at least a few hours of use before installing the next. It's super slow going and sucks to not have all my apps, but I just don't know what to do.

I'm still not convinced the full wipe will do it. I did that a couple iterations ago when I was going between ROMS and it didn't help then. The only difference between then and now is I'm going very slowly installing the apps back in and also avoiding restoring the data (data only) from TB unless I absolutely have to.
One oddity for me was when this would happen, if I would go into the recent item listing and cleared it, that would make a huge difference performance wise. Did you experience the same thing?

Yep, I did. It definitely helped briefly, but opening certain apps would bog the entire thing down. Never quite felt the way it should have.
Same thing for me too. Have tried all the best/popular ROMs and eventually I have unbearable lag. Only thing I've done between ROMs is restore apps via Titanium Backup (Just the apps, no data). Wonder if installing the apps 1 by 1 via the play store really helps or not?

Still figuring it out myself. I tried to go to both the latest VenomOne ROM and the last KK version of it and neither would load on my phone. Went back to DU and so far so good. But it's only been about 8 hours. Trying to restore as little data from TB as possible.
Update for me. I was tired of the lag once again (Was on this 7/7/2015-Lollipop Stock Rooted Google Play Edition LMY47O.H6). I downloaded Venom 4.3.0. Performed a wipe 3 times in TWRP and then also wipe in Venom. It's only been around 12 hours since I flashed it but holy crap this is crazy fast. I did not do any TB backup or any app restore of any sort, just did it all manually via the Play Store. Now typically, when I flash new ROMs it seems to be pretty fast but I don't recall it ever being this fast. Hopefully this sticks. I'll post an update in a few days.

One thing I found on Reddit just now. Apparently Accessibility features lag phones, see thread here https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3i31fs/psa_accessibility_can_cause_your_phone_to_appear/ Only thing I ever recall using was LastPass so if could fill in the credentials for other apps. I just disabled the accessibility for it so I guess we'll see.

Interesting, I couldn't even get it installed on my phone this time! I've been running Dirty Unicorns for a couple days now, installed most of my apps and am having no issues yet. However, I do miss the TMO wifi calling. That's going to be a problem since one of my work locations has basically zero cell coverage.

Something has to be wrong with my phone. DU runs better, but still not 100% smooth. I still find that clearing the recent apps helps, but it wasn't like that a couple months ago. I don't know if I dropped my phone or the internal memory is damaged somehow or what. But it's still locking randomly and just not smooth.
Now I gotta figure out how to unroot and bring it back to stock so that TMO doesn't give me crap about replacing this thing.

Keep me updated. DU has slowed down since I installed it, but clearing recent apps seems to temporarily help things. Also started using Folio instead of Facebook, and relied more heavily on my Wear device, so things have been tolerable (albeit not great).

But that wouldn't get rid of the bootloader, would it? I still have to research the steps to perform, but not only do I have to put stock ROM on it, but I have to replace the bootloader and recovery to try and get rid of all traces that it's been rooted (the red text at boot for example).
I won't be doing that until closer to the weekend anyways. So I still have a few days to figure it out and maybe in that time there'll be a breakthrough on why my phones doing this.

Just out of curiosity, are you using a microSD, and if so, what size/kind? I've had a 64gb in mine forever (and wasn't even using it for anything), and I just unmounted it. Suddenly, everything is significantly smoother and the bugginess has gone away. It's only been about an hour, but I'm starting to think that might have been the problem all along.

I am, but I have replaced it. I was using a 16GB one, but bought a 32GB when these problems started with the purpose of off loading programs to the SD card since the phones memory was getting full. The phone is no longer full since I've wiped and don't have that many programs installed anymore. I can try taking it out to see how things go.
So im trying to figure this on out. I've started a new thread similar to yours, First I would look into an app that will tell you what is using your data. I get 440 in 12 or 13 days is a lot for you and I tend to agree given the usual usage. Mine will sometimes run over a GB in a day, almost always background and always shows Quickset SDK as the app. The main problem with that is it has same permissions and is associated with like half the operations on the device. Maybe we can get this fig'd out.

Why don't you try to block the OS from using data with a firewall , it's worth a shot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.faircode.netguard
Please post results if it works okay so others can do it aswell , and if anything i have said has helped then please leave a thumbs up , thanks.....
Soo im gonna try both ure options. 20 days in on my month 1 gb for and os. Didnt even think of a firewall. Chrome so far has used a measly 340 mb. Everything else is 10 mb or less. Id love to figure out the root cause of this issu. i gave up on it after my post no one ever answers me back so i forgot all about high data usage. Im always on wifi so i dont really use data. Except mms and minor web browsing. But lets figure this out together. For now im gonna use the firewall but ima figure out what in the os uses so much data.

Yes that is an option, and prob a viable one, but like @TheMadScientist420 I really want to find the cause, as it's not the norm and the firewall is a stop-gap to the bigger problem. I haven't checked yet, but I have to guess that using the firewall would prob yield the same results as restricting background data, as it's not the OS as a whole thats the issue, my bet is it's one of the processes that's creating it. I also ran a couple virus scans and came up empty. SO....
See my other thread here for a more detailed explaination.
thanks for input tho.
I found a fota update. .9 gb dut i dont see tthat doin it i have a sprint varient i gsm unlocked and far as i know disabled fota a long time ago. But when i get home tonight from work im gonna find the problem. like said above i believe its a rogue prosses.
Mines had all kinds of weird issues since unlock thought. For instance as soon as i flash the rooted rom i lose usb conectivity. I have to transfer all files to ext sd then take it out and put in pc. Or a otg flash drive. I thought about reflashing stock carrier folder and toting back stock starting over. But again when i flash rooted rom no usb connection. Mtp connectio. To be exact. Got ptp and diag ports.
Also thought maybe compare system data usage on wifi compared to data see how fast it jumps. But like i said im at work now

Yeah I wondered the same at first because I disabled FOTA, and deleted the update.zip I found I wondered if it kept re-DL'g it but like I said on the other one, and I looked again. It's not there and no change in available storage. I have wondered if it partly due to that too tho.

So i checked wifi usage and its about the same but not my biggest culprit between torrent downloads chrome and apps i download install and uninstall.
But man over a gig still seems high. And then added about 2 gigs for android system i checked im 13 days into this month cycle so thats bad

Yeah I gotta agree, over a GB in 2wks is a lot. You def use more data than me overall, but I can't see why yours would still be that high. when it was working, like I've been used to. I don't think it was EVER out of the bottom 5 in data use. and usually 3rd lowest or less. prob less than 100MB per month that's why this is so weird. To jump from <100MB to >5GB (it got me throttled, the 1st month it happened), somethings up at that point.
Thanks for info I just installed Xposed again. tried to get G3 tweakbox to work before and didn't really at all for me so I uninstalled then.
Yea xposed for the g4 is real finnicky sometimes. Now remeber to click the restrick background data in data settings
I don't know what the deal is, but i cannot post on XDA on any phone since the major update. Ive tried different phones, different browsers, and different keyboards. Whenever i type it jumps all over the place, adding tons on empty lines, types in-between other words. XDA pp doesn't work either since all it is is a web wrapper. My tablet is fine.
Has anyone else encountered this and found a fix?
You mean in the app? Use the browser to login if so.
I don't allow any social media apps on my phone... especially fb.

Are you using the XDA app to view the site?
I'm viewing/using it through Brave browser, no issues.
Ad blocker, firewall or router settings maybe?

No. Mainly browser, Chrome based. But Chrome based and actual Chrome exhibit the same behavior and so does Firefox. App does as well. As mentioned, tried ruling out as many things as possible, down to bare bone but it still misbehaves. But only on my phone. My tablet is fine.

That's odd that 2 different browsers are puking on you.
Clear the Chrome, Firefox caches.
Try clearing the system cache.
Maybe a network reset...
I run adblockers but they don't interfere with this site. Script blockers will.
Javascript is needed to post. I get a site warning popup for that though if it's disabled. Maybe you're not getting the warning?

I'd find that unlikely. My phone is basically identical to my tablet (minus that it's a tablet). This has been an on going issue. I've reflashed my phone in-between the issue with ODIN which did a complete wipe.
I no longer do backups, so it's not some old setting or app interfering. It is literally only this dingus forum. It was perfectly fine before the upgrade.
Guess I'll just not use it on my phone and stick to my tablet.

Reflash to the last version that worked if you can.
That's why I don't do updates if I have a fast, stable system that's fulfilling its mission.
If you updated to 12 there are reports of apps not being compatible with it causing erratic behaviors.
The problem app may not seem related to the problem.
Google can blame the 3rd party apps but they knew this would happen. Google scoped storage is not a mature platform... it's a mess

Issue wasnt there on 11, appeared on 11 and is still there 12. I'm just going to give up on this as a lost cause. Thought there would be more people with issues like this but since it's a one off I'm going to just forget about it
What keyboard do you have installed? The issue you describe seems like a keyboard problem.
I used to have a keyboard that whenever you paste something, it erased part of the previous word.
In xda app post box, Gboard has a small issue for me. Whenever i hit enter to make a new line, the cursor stayed on the last word written
Try changing keyboards.

Funny you ask. I just noticed I'm using Gboard, not sure when that happened and am having no issues. Was using Samsung Keyboard.
Odd that I only have issues on phones. Same OS, same keyboard, same apps, etc..

So something with the Samsung Keyboard?
Try clearing it's data. Clear system cache.
Try rolling it back to factory version or updating it. Generally the factory load version is the most stable. Another Samsung system app could be causing it but no idea which to look at.
When it started is a big clue. Were any apps iupdated, OS upgrade, new apps installed near that time?
Poorly written 3rd party app will sometimes change user hidden settings which will persist even if uninstalled. It's rare but it happens.
Are any Samsung apks disabled or blocked especially system apks?
Could it be malware, sometimes the effects are subtle but Androids tend to be very stable so any glitches or instability should be investigated promptly. A factory reset on Android 9 or higher would rule out malware.
A interesting issue. If you're persistent you'll likely track it down... sometimes it takes a while.

Nope like i said i have since done an ODIN flash from locked to unlocked firmware and the problem persisted. I dont do backups anymore, i set up everything from scratch. It rules out bad settings or troublesome apps.
For being blocked, i have the same blacklist applied as on my tablet.
I dont get what the incompatibility is, let alone why ironically its only XDA.
Im going to live with it and periodically check again as the keyboard is updated.
