I am planning to buy Note 2 in close future, and i wanted то ask Note 2 users, that read books on it.
Is it comfortable?
Is the Amoled screen is better or worse for reading than ips?
What is the overall feeling of Note 2 as reader?
I want to use Note 2 heavily for reading, that why i need that info.

I do a lot of reading on my Note II. Not so much books but news! The display dpi lends itself well to reading as does the smart stay feature. I have my screen of set to 15 seconds yet have never had the screen switch off whilst viewing. It was a feature I first thought was a gimmick but it really is very very good. The only problem is if you read at night with no ambient lighting. Then it cannot see that you are reading and may turn off.
-Go to bed with a good book. Or someone that's read one

normally i'd say an LCD display is better for book reading.
when an amoled screen is forced to display white, it consumes more than twice the amount of power compared to an LCD screen rendering white, simply due to the way amoled works. so amoled will drain the battery faster if youre reading black text on white backgrounds.
but if you invert it to white text on black backgrounds, you'll get much better battery life.

I know that Amoled consumes more power on white, but Note 2 has a monster battery - so that isn’t a problem. I am taking about reading quality in 4 variants:
Reading news in browser,
Reading books in daylight -black on white,
Reading books at night - green on black,
Reading pdf and djvu books with lot of diagrams and pictures.
(I know that for pdf tablet is better, but i want something compact.)

I bought note ii for the same reasons and I am not regretting.
I read news/forums a lot on GN2 and it's been fine, no eye strain even with black text on white background. I do recommend Screen Filter app and set auto brightness with auto tone turned on. You can even turn on negative screen colour rendering in accessibility options.
The screen size of this phone is a big plus for reading, however I do make the text larger than the default for easier viewing at distance. Remember don't read too close to the screen...

I use my note2 daily for reading daily. I switched from the fairly large screen s3 but its a huge difference. s3 was fine for occasional reading but note 2 can totally replace an eBook reader or tablet.
I would say that the Note2 is He best phone for reading simply due to its sheer size. Its only slight smaller than a standard book, so you can display text at standard book font size (publishers tend to use very similar sizes across the board) but not have to keep scrolling excessively like on smaller phones.
Using a reader which properly renders white text on TrueBlack (like Pocket), lets you use a lower the brightness than you normally would, due to the high contrast. I find this greatly reduces eyestrain compared to an lcd.
Black text on white background is pretty good as well, in part due to a setting called Auto Adjust Screen Tone (AAST) . This saves power by reducing the tones of brighter colours and has the side effect of reducing eye strain.
Also don't want to under estimate the battery life.
On a full charge, I get about 7 hours of screen time for purely reading Black text on white back. However white text on black lasts a whopping 13 hours. Video playback is usually between 7-9 hours.

Thank you all for your reply. Finally bought the Note 2. For now, I am very pleased by the screen quality. Overall impression is just incredible. There are so many things in that device! I am feeling "little" overwhelmed by that pho... tab... phab.... thing. About reading - feeling very good after 30 minutes reading. No comparison with my LG P500 LCD screen. Screen is not as bright as LCD, but with much better readability. Feeling it little like e-ink display... Will see how it will feel after more reading.
My brother just upgraded from an iPhone 4 to a note 2 purely for reading. He was always saying the iPhone is fine for ebooks but once he used the note he could never go back haha.

I was reading fine even on my Zoolander phone called Vibrant, this phone is much easier on the eyes. You'll love it.
You can use an app called screen filter to bring down the brightness even more to make it more comfortable especially in a dark room

I bought Samsung Galaxy Note 2 just a few weeks ago, and because I'm an avid reader I'm immediately downloaded from Google Play store all major readers in the market such as Kindle, Kobo, Aldiko Premium, and UB Reader. I was reading e-books when I have Nokia E71 with just 2.4 inch screen! And by the way, I do not remember when was the last time I read a printed version of book. It's the past. So, you can imagine what the reading is when you have Note 2 with 5.5 inch screen. It's just an awesome experience. However, I went to Settings + Display +Screen mode + and chose 'Natural' instead of 'Standart' and I'm thinking about switching to Sepia in my reader instead of those white-black or vice versa. It looks like it is easier for your eyes but I'm not sure about that. Maybe others will tell me if reading on Sepia is healthier for your eyes than on sheer white?
Use night mode. ..white words on black background. ..is less Stressful and also saves battery on amoled screens

Hello everyone,
after 4 returns of LG G Pads, all of which had screen issues (adhesive yellow lines, light bleeding, 7 light spots of doom at the bottom) I've decided to up my game and move to 10.1 as something futureproof and fun to own...
However most issues pop AFTER we get our hands on the tablet. As such, I would like to ask the owners. Hand over heart - what are the + and - and what are the most common issues (if any) reported with this tablet?
Thinking of buying it from Pcworld today.

There were some early assembly issues (S Pen loose in silo, speaker grills uneven or loose, BT connectivity issues) that seem to have abated because after the wave of early builds they haven't been mentioned lately. If you're a lag-freak the N10.1-14 does suffer from the occasional transition stutter or milliseconds of lag opening and closing apps. I'd peg it as lag free 95% of the time. We're getting Magazine UX/4.4 soon and the Tab/Pro's shown on video from their CES launch looked much smoother than the N10.1-14. Do you have better than 20/20 vision? A couple of people who do (or apparently do) have noticed some display anomalies when looking at certain content; most likely because of the N10.1-14's RGBW PenTile display. I can't replicate it but have only mere mortal vision.
The top reasons to get the N10.1-14 are:
Display. I think it's gorgeous no matter what anyone else says and I compare it against my N3 everyday.
Form factor. Amazingly light, slim, and small for a 10" tablet.
Doing stuff. S Pen, S Note, Multi View, Action Memo, Scrap Book and the like are huge productivity benefits and once you start using them they are hard to live without. I'm on my second round of "Notes" with the N3 and N10.1-14 replacing my N2 and N10.1-12.
The top reasons not to buy it:
You're a pure consumption user. All of the extra features of the N10.1-14 use a lot of resources and if you're not going to use them will just be annoying. You pay a lot of money for the N10.1-14 because of those features (and premium h/w that's needed to power them) and to not use them will leave you frustrated.
You're a lag-freak. As it stands there's some stuttering, hesitation, and lag about 5% of the time. It's most prominent when there's a bunch of background processing going on. Some of the proprietary apps can throw up a spinning wheel while they're processing. For example you can move content between two apps open in Multi View. It's not always instant. You can also use Air Command to copy full screens of content from various sources to be saved in your Scrap Book. It too isn't instant.
You have super human vision or live-and-die by a "perfect" display. Some people here (a half dozen?) are really freaking out about some anomalies they've detected in the display. Interestingly, other than a single reviewer who actually has 20/15 vision mentioning he noticed "something different" about the display no one outside XDA has mentioned what some folks here have found/described. The difference between a RGB display and the N10.1-14's PenTile display is that because of an indirect sub-pixel arrangement, in certain situations like specific saturated colors on specific backgrounds, there can be detectable imperfections on certain content. Since you're leaving the G Pad over its display do yourself (and the forum ) a favor and make sure your display expectations are met before you buy a N10.1-14.

I have owned (and loved) an S4 before it got stolen and I moved to my Z1.
I never had an issue with Samsung, but I do remember the occasional lag/stutter. I think it's to be used to.
The main reasons why I opted for the 10.1 are:
- The stylus + multi window. I do a lot of reading/writing and I often carry a paperbook around when I read a book to keep notes. But I am not the most tidy of persons, and I thought that operating a 10.1 in multiwindow instead would allow me to keep notes as I kindled through content.
- The specs appear future proof and XDA appears to have a good community for customing Samsungs. With cleanroms and what not, I am hoping to be able to keep the functionality of the Stylus along with a more lag free experience.
- Yes, I enjoy my movies and online magazine content, so the screen is important to me.
I will order one and hope to see it arrive by tomorrow. I can always return it within 7 days, but I doubt I will (Light bleed or faulty screens however are an immediate no go for me ! )
AS a 10.1 owner, do you think my reasons are valid? Thanks for your feedback

Up until a few days ago everyone here almost universally loved the display. A couple of people started ragging on it just recently. I wouldn't have even mentioned the display as anything but "outstanding" if not for those few people's recent comments. I've tried to replicate each of the scenarios they are bothered by and just can't. One of them admitted to 20/15 vision so s/he may be seeing imperfections I don't. People that have bought the N10.1-14 on my recommendation (with the display playing a large part) have been universally pleased.
As for lag and such my i7 gaming desktop with 12GB of RAM and 10K RPM drives lags occasionally. I shrug while others will blow away and rebuild Windows over it. To each their own.
Based on what you've described you'll be blown away by the N10.1-14's productivity features. But give them some time before drawing a conclusion. Being developed by Asian's for Western users the functionality isn't always intuitive or well presented. It is logical though and the more you use it the more comfortable you become with it.
I have a 3G version that I bought in the U.S. as an import and paid an un-Godly price for it. Almost twice the $389 some people that are complaining about certain aspects of the N10.1-14 paid during a recent refurb promotion that ran. I'm happy but it's hard to anticipate what makes others happy. After the past couple of days of pretty brutal discussion on lag and the display (which I don't personally agree with) I've learned not to project my expectations and what satisfies them on to others.
Based on your list I think you'll be happy though. And even happier when we get moved to 4.4/M-UX which is imminent because leaks have started to appear.

Just came home from pc world and saw the note...
It has yellow discoloration at the edges, and on the sides, visible on the whites..Just like the lg g pads i was forced to return...
I am terrified my unit tomorrow will suffer from the same. Can I be that unlucky?

I also do not notice the PenTile grid that some people keep pointing out on the Note 10.1 2014. I've seen the PenTile grid a couple times on my Galaxy S3 when fooling with the brightness and depending on the lighting, but I've yet to see it on my Note 10.1 2014.
As Barry has mentioned, there are a lot of different factors that could be an issue for some folks. If you have the brightness up, you're sitting under a bright light, you have better than average eye sight, there are many reasons you could see an anomaly or part of the device such as the PenTile grid.
Generally the picture is really crisp and clear unless I load a website that is using some low resolution images on the site. Those appear fuzzy and stand out compared to the crisp text.

No,no, I had a friend with me. We were both mocking Ipads and how they had a known yellow tint issue on left hand side.
Then I walked over to the note 10.1 2014 (mine is arriving tomorrow by delivery), and against whites there was an obvious yellow discoloration on the bottom right corner, as if from leftover adhesive or what not. I've not read ANYTHING like that for the notes, but I just finished returning the 4th lg g pad over it (if you go over to the lg g pad section of xda, under general and QA/Screen quality, you will see what I speak of..)
At this point all I can do is pray haha
Good luck with your note. I have had mine for a few months now and have yet to experience any sort of issues with the screen. Demo units at stores I think are more likely to have issues because of the amount of wear and abuse they get rom random people/kids fondling them.
So far this tablet is totally forgotten by Samsung.
I'm still at mj6 for 3 months, the tablet lags , the lock screen takes 3 secs to wake up and Samsung does not even care.
My advice stay away from note 10.1 2014.
Why care for a product that's already forgotten by the manufacturer?

I've hard of occasional lag but I doubt a 3-4 month old tab has been forgotten
Well here is my first review.
A beautiful tablet, but a bit on the heavy side. Unfortunately I am returning this one as well - severe light bleeding on the bottom and right side in landscape mode. at least 8-9 spots illuminating the screen.
I think God's telling me to drop the tablet idea altogether..
I might try once more with the note though, it really does look beautiful

This tablet is fast and smooth. I have noticed light bleed on all tablets that I have owned (nexus 7, nexus 7 2013, Asus Tranformer Ifinity TF-701, Samsung Note 10.1 2014.
I am happy with this new tablet, since some selfish bastard broke into my house and stole my TF-701. This tablet by far has the best resolution, and the best display of all I have owned. The light bleed is minimal compared to the nexus 7s.
Maybe I got a good one, or I have just gotten used to light bleed on larger formats.
I would recommend this tablet, as long as you are comfortable with Touchwiz, and Samsung's way of doing things.

It looks wonderful but mine had severe light bleeding, 6 distinct spots at left side, 4 at bottom, nothing symmetrical about them. Getting one from John lewis tomorrow hoping I will be lucky ☺

New unit light bleed as well. 5 spots at bottom (which i didn't really mind, small ones), big one at top though...
Let's see how the next one does. I'll be getting a note, for sure. But I want to get bang for my buck Thank God for John Lewis return service, so let's see...
P.S. Whomever stated that Ipad air is superior to this device is a moron like no other...
I just picked one up about 2 hours ago from Brandsmart. With the display at 100% on a black background it has 6 at the bottom. It looks like small spot lights shinning up. It's charging now but if I notice it with normal use I will return it. I also have the tab 3 10.1 I got for Xmas. It had a few bad spots so I swapped it out. Now I'm good to go. Some are just worse then others. Kind of like women

P.S., this is the second one., compared to my new N 7 2013. First was FAR worse. Seeing this comparison I think I'll pass on the excuse that lightbleeding is part of the LCD technology

Whatever note you get you will get light bleed, but don't see the problem if it isn't noticeable in normal use, I never sit in dark room with the brightness full with a black screen, do u?

Whatever note you get you will get light bleed, but don't see the problem if it isn't noticeable in normal use, I never sit in dark room with the brightness full with a black screen, do u?

It was visible watching a movie full brightness in a lit room, and very noticeable at 40% brightness in a dark room. For 450 pounds I definitely have a problem with it especially since my travelling budget device (199 pounds) out performs with same style of panel...

Mine is fine. At 100% brightness on a black background it shows a little on some angles but watching movies or viewing pics it's not bleeding into the screen.
Yeah yours looked bad.

Is it worth it?
Hi guys I need some advice.
I look for 10” tablet which main use (beside watching Netflix in bed, web browsing, occasional gaming in 3d intensive games, web email etc…) will be to import photos from my camera (USB OTG or Wi-Fi direct) then browse, delete, edit (Photoshop touch) and move to SD card.
Now I was thinking about Note 10.1 (2014) but I been put away by number of problems with this device and its uneven performance.
Owning Tegra Note 7 I found that I love the performance but 7 inch is too small and stylus is nice addition but it’s not must have for me.
Therefore I look at Tab S 10.5.
From outside it looks like slim nice device but I still remember my horrors with first Galaxy Note.
Personally I found that Samsung customer service is run by semi-skilled chimpanzee paid in rotten bananas. Since I have this opportunity to contact several departments/case escalations etc. I gain one great example of how customer service should NOT look like – priceless material and first-hand experience for my business presentations.
Therefore I am very nervous thinking about another Samsung device.
Please help:
1.*******If you own Tab S 10.5 already – are you 100% satisfied with it? Performance, sound, built quality, display, functions (I read that 8,5 has some performance issues but I got the impression that 10.5 is not affected?)
2.*******DEAD pixels – I have really bad luck to these – did you find any of them on OLED display so far?
3.*******Ghosting / colour issues – especially in dark gamma of colours. I remember that this was main reason I sold my galaxy note. Photos from camera looked horrible on the display; any dark colours seemed to be missing quite a chunk of shades between dark grey and black (darkest colour that pixel could display was too far from total blackness of pixel off state). Is this still an issue here?* I wish to use my tablet to browse and edit the photos therefore this will be a deal breaker for me.
4.*******USB OTG using simple usb adapter – read mixed opinions on the forum – does it work out of the box or not?
5.*******Taking into account what I said about how I am going to use a tablet – would you recommend Tab S or maybe Sony Z2 tab? Still prefer Samsung look and feel but Sony with SD800 looks like robust device.

I'm very happy with the screen, performance and the build quality. I don't mind it being plastic at all.
Since its Samsung there might be a few micro lags once in a while but I'm OK with that. Playing heavy 3d games is very smooth and Netflix and other videos look absolutely suberb.
Only thing that I don't like so far is the new hardware buttons.
How about dead pixels and screen performance on dark photos in third party apps?

No dead pixels. I'm not expert on photography so I'm not sure about that. I'm happy with this screen performance on photos. Not used third party apps, only what comes preinstalled.
And all my photos are taken with s4 and that affects photo quality very much, especially in dark photos.
Would you be able to make small experiment? Take a dark-ish photo with the camera. Then try to edit it in Snapseed (free photo editing app - great in my opinion) and check how does the photo looks like. My worry is that most if not all third party apps that have not been preinstalled (and therefore not optimised by Samsung) may have problems with OLED.

Did that but since I don't have real camera I had to took the photo with s4 that produces grainy photos in low light environment.
I downloaded a pic taken with real camera and opened it in Snapseed. Didn't notice any problems, looked the same as the original photo. Cropped though. But yet again, I'm no expert on this matter.

The problem you may come across with the OLED screen is going to be the opposite of what you had experienced in the past with regard to photos. The OLED screen is capable of such a high contrast and so many levels of black that if you have a photo (or especially a video) that lacks good shadow info it may appear poor but only because the source is low quality. For example, take this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWpZQhnNTu8 the blacks look good on a LCD because it isn't capable of producing many dark levels in the first place. But try that same video on the Tab S OLED screen and the shadow areas in parts of the video look terrible because the better display shows the holes in the quality.
That video you posted looks absolutely fantastic on the OLED display ?
I visit a store yesterday and I can confirm that Samsung branded USB OTG cable works with no problems - I could read and write using stock file manager so far so good. Since I got nice discount for LTE version I am more and more convinced to getting one.
Also I took pictures from different cameras with me and browse them on the tablet - no problems whatsoever. Really nice display. Crisp and full of details.
Thank you all for comments - is there anything else I should know from all yours first hand experiences? Or should I jump on it and be happy teddy?
Only shame is that I got the offer for white tab only when I love the look of brown one. (Ech... Either way I will keep in in the case so... ).

This is by no means the fastest tablet out there. Though I love the screen and my aosp ROM is working better everyday and has eliminated any lag issues I had.

I can't compare with the tablet Z, but I own a Tab S 8.4, a Nexus 7 2013 and a Note 8.0. I will try to answer your questions based on my experience:
The tab S 8.4's screen is a huge disappointment to me. It looks awesome in bright environments, the high pitch and vivid colors are pleasant to my eyes. However, for someone with high expectations as I did, it suffers from several issues that used affect previous AMOLED generations and totally ruin my experience:
- Smearing on black backgrounds. An issue that was already reported on Galaxy S4, and that seem to affect Tab S 8.4 as well: A dark red smear is visible when watching movies on black backgrounds. It looks like black pixels are slower at displaying a color than already lit pixels. The result is not obvious on first watch, but once noticed becomes a nightmare in dark movies.

While this seem to be pretty efficient fixing the smearing issue, the result is not perfect, it is rather annoying to use AND we lose the benefits of perfect blacks in the darkness. And it impacts battrery life, as a dark grey pixel is powered, while a black one is not.
- Mura effect. Basically, dark (but not black) colors are not homogenous on the screen. It is only really noticeable in the darkness, wich is my main usage for the tablet. Rather annoying, especially since the fix for the smearing issues induces replacing all "black" by "extremely dark grey", which reveal this issue.

- Yellow/greyish tint. This one is'nt the worst, but can be felt on white backgrounds. This one becomes obvious when compared directly to a more natural white screen: the middle of the screen seems more yellowish and darker than the borders. It seems like the glass could be dirty, or tinted by years of heavy usage, which it is not.
None of these issues are obvious to someone who doesn't set his standards very high. They are for me though, and will probably be noticed by people willing to use the tablet in the darkness.
As a bottomline, I actually prefer the display offered by my Nexus 7 or iPad mini retina rather than the Tab S 8.4's. They lack the "wow" effect of vivid colors and the perfect blacks, but provide a more homogenous experience, especially in the darkness.
Now for the performances, I don't know what's wrong with this tab. I was thinking about putting the blame on TouchWiz, but alternative launchers don't help. Rooting and turning off as many services as possible didn't either. Here is what I noticed:
- System zoom effects are subjects to stuttering (opening new app/window, for example). None of my other android device suffers from similar issues, and zooming in other apps such as web browser works flawlessly. The issue is not reliable, and seems to reduce when the same window is opened and closed several times in a row. Memory access issue causing stuttering ?
- Overall system doesn't feel as smooth as it should. Even my elder Note 8.0 feels butter smooth compared to the Tab S 8.4, which I can hardly explain. It is fast enough, but the FPS seems to be lower.
- Two of my favourite apps suffer from low FPS when scrolling: Perfect Viewer and Moon+ Reader. The poor performances make the experience with these apps less enjoyable than on N7 or Note 8, which his hard to explain considering how much more powerful the Tab S 8.4 should be.
- 3D gaming is not at its best either. Performances are clearly below N7, and maybe even lower than on Note 8. There, I guess this is the cost for the extreme pixel density of the display panel.
If you are satisfied with the services offered by your Sony tablet, I'd suggest to stick with it. The Tab S 8.4 is a very decent tablet but not perfect, and its major strenghts are also its main weaknesses.
My 10.5 tablet doubtlessly has the best screen I've ever seen on any device. Sure, a k1 is faster CPU and GPU wise, but for my mainly media consumption and Web browsing it's amazing. Haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned above so I guess pentile does detract a bit.

Your answer was perfect for my needs as my main utility for Tab S would be perfect viewer and moon reader as well.
Reading all sorts of experiences I'm beginning to wonder if I should buy a new tablet or not and it seems that I will rain check this purchase for now...

since in some country you can like send it back if you not satisfy kind of sale.. and if it apply to you why dont you test it. i dont have any problem like being mentioned above. and in this short period... i think the QC of the device are kind of loopy... some got great functionality without any problem and sadly some does.

Regarding the screen, I couldn't find reports about the issues I mentioned above for the Tab S 10.5. It looks like the screen on the 10.5 is using a newer technology that would fixe these issues. I so wish it would be the same for 8.4 !
Not everybody is noticing these issues on 8.4, but then I believe it to be related to lower sensitivity to the issues. They are not obvious at all, and basically impossible to notice in lightened environments and/or watching colored images.

I'm not having any of the issues you highlighted with the screen. If you have already voided your warranty it would be interesting to see if you have the same issue with my asop build.
Not having any issue with my tab s 8.4 here... love this tablet.. i was a user of nexus 7 2nd gen..

As a newb at flashing roms, I didn't go further than rooting at the moment.
Regarding the screen, while I am surprised that people report not noticing the issues at all, I am convinced many just don't notice them.
The smearing is actually more felt, guessed than seen. But once noticed, it becomes an annoyance.
The green/yellow tint is only visible on white backgrounds and when comparing to other screens or looking at it for a duration (reading e-books or internet webpages). It's far from being obvious on first sight.
The Mura effect however should become obvious to anyone looking for it. You can try with the follwing steps:
- Download and install screen adjuster.
- Get in the complete darkness
- Launch Screen adjuster, and set Red, Green and Blue to +5. Make sure it's switched on
- Look at a completely black background
=> The black background won't be black anymore but very dark grey. This is what Screen adjuster did by adding +5 in each color. If the screen is affected by mura effect, some areas will be lighter grey and others darker.
This is an issue that affects the 3 tab S 8.4 I tried (I exchanged it twice), as well as my Galaxy SII and my PS Vita. I just wish it wouldn't be the case, but I have yet to see an amoled display that isn't affected, and can hardly beleive I would be cursed badly enough to always get faulty units.
No issues on mine. The screen is superlative!

Yes, from my readings here and there, T800 screens whouldn't suffer from the same issues. They use a different technology though, I wish T700 would be using the same.

on first I thought it is related to that one, but after purchased 2nd Tab S 8.4 T705, I noticed screen going yellowish.
specially in middle screen while in horizontal rotate specially reading something that has white background.

That's light bleed - light seeping from the backlight into the edges of the display. Happens when the display is compressed/bent during installation into the phone. Nothing you can do about it but get the phone exchanged if it bothers you that much. However, if you exchange it, it's the luck of the draw - you might get a better one or a much worse one.
Unfortunately, all LCD displays are prone to this, as manufacturers would have to reject something like 50% of them otherwise - I had to go through SIX brand-new 27" Dell monitors before I found two that I could live with - and they're still far from perfect.
I had to exchange my iPad Mini twice to get a good display, and my Nexus 9 three times. It's totally random. Got lucky with my G4 that has a perfect screen (though I had to exchange it, too, as the first one had dust stuck between the front glass and the display panel).
Manufacturers just have really low "acceptable quality" standards to maximize profits/units sold, as many people will never notice those issues.

I see thanks, I had some light bleed (I knew what it is didn't remember the english word LOL) on my N4 too but nowhere near this and it didn't seem like a solid strip more random...
Sent it back... hope I got luck with the next one, and hope Amazon is quick my current phones battery is pretty much dead...
