I have spent all weekend trying to figure this out... ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a Project Fi Pixel 2 XL.
Came from Google with 8.1.
I took the OTA to Android 9
Fastboot Unlocked
Flashed TWRP to stick no trouble.
This is where I am having an issue, every single time I try to flash Magisk , after I reboot, I get stuck on the G screen with the loading bar. After about 60 secs, phone reboots to TWRP. I have been running the Magisk uninstaller and it will let it boot normally. I have tried flashing Flash Kernel then Magisk, same thing. Tried flashing Magisk then kernel, same thing. I have tried beta and stable Magisk. Even tried old Magisk zips. I tried pulling the boot.img and patching it and then pushing it back, same thing..... Do I need to roll back to 8.1, root, then upgrade to 9?
Any help/guidance is appreciated.....

9.0 was a bugger for me to root as well at first, so don't feel too bad. I tried many of the combinations that you stated without success. And then it just worked for whatever reason. So lets try something you haven't.
1. Fastboot into twrp, flash your custom kernel, then magisk 17.1 but not twrp and see if it boots up.
2. Fastboot into twrp, flash the twrp zip, then kernel, and see if it boots. Then go back to twrp and flash magisk and see if it boots.
3. If #2 didn't boot, go back to twrp, flash the magisk uninstaller, then immediately flash magisk again and see if it boots.
Hopefully one of them works for you.
Thanks! I'll try that now and report back.

So, 1st off, THANK YOU! #1 worked perfectly! Flashed Flash then Magisk, booted right up!
You think I am ok to go ahead and flash TWRP now? Again, thank you! I have had many phones and I was bout to beat my head into a wall over this one!

Congrats! Yeah, your fine to go ahead and flash twrp now. Several other users had to do it that way as well. Make sure to flash magisk again after twrp and you should be good :good:

I can't get TWRP to install on my phone. I've tried manually fastbooting all three TWRP images that are available from the TWRP website. I tried installing TWRP using the Skipsoft Toolkit. Whatever I do I never get past the TWRP splash screen--no menus ever come up. Since no menus ever come up I can't install the TWRP zip or a custom ROM. I've been trying this for hours and it's driving me crazy. Is there a different procedure to boot into temporary TWRP if you are on the June bootloader? Is there another version of the TWRP image file that I'm missing? Am I supposed to let the TWRP sit there for a really long time? This is driving me completely batty.
Did you downgrade from O?
If that is the case you should flash the stock bootloader and boot.img into both slots on your device and try again

It took way too long but I installed TWRP, flashed DU, installed ElementalEx, rooted with custom Magisk for Pixel and got the phone to pass Safety Net. Everything seems to be working. However, whenever I go into recovery TWRP doesn't seem to be there. I appear to get the stock recovery which I don't understand. I can still boot into temporary TWRP and flash the TWRP zip and flash other zips on my phone but I can't seem to boot directly into TWRP. Is this normal or did I do something wrong somewhere?

If I recall correctly, after flashing any rom you have to flash twrp again before rebooting. Apparently roms flash an img to our recovery partition that looks similar to a modified CWM.

I actually did that. Maybe I was supposed to boot into the rom once, then back into recovery to flash TWRP. There are a lot of different flashing instructions for this phone. It's hard to keep it all straight.

Booting into the rom, going back into temp TWRP and flashing the TWRP zip seems to have worked --TWRP actually stuck this time and I can boot directly into it now. It's a shame Google made the Pixel XL such a headache to flash on.
Hi everyone,
I found similar threads here on the forums, but none of them solved my problem!
My Zenfone 2 (Z00A/ZEE551ML) keeps bootlooping into TWRP, the cause of this issue is when i try to flash the SuperSU v2.8 zip!
My TWRP is 3.1.1, when i flash either Lineage 14 or AOSP/XOSP it boots normally into the OS, but the moment when I install SuperSU the bootloop happens (and yes, I've tried to flash it before and after the first boot of the OS, and it didn't work for either one of these methods)! The problem is that I want to use AOSP and I need Root access, and it doesn't come Rooted out of the box, unlike Lineage. Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance!

Apparently.... my phone refuses to install TWRP 3.0.2......
I'm doing all the steps that I'm used to.... Enable Debugging on dev. options.... adb reboot fastboot.... fastboot flash recovery "TWRP 3.0.2" and it's sucessful....
However... when i try to boot into recovery, the phone goes back to fastboot (although, i can boot it to system normally).
I tried flashing 3.1.1 back again and it worked, it went back to 3.1.1 .... so I'm back at square one.

Check the following topic and download VerifiedBootSigner-v8.zip
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...signing-boot-images-android-verified-t3600606
Flash SuperSU and don't reboot yet.
Flash VerifiedBootSigner-v8.zip and then reboot.
Let me now if it worked. I had the same problem after installing Magisk. Resigning the bootimage fixed the problem for me.

Thank you very much, sir! :good:
Need help, i have been using custom roms since i got the phone, was on the newest cdroid from today or yesterday, decided i wanted to try OOS, i updated to official twrp 3.2.0.2 and downloaded the full OOS zip.
Formatted data, transfered OOS zip and magisk 16 to phone, wiped everything except sdcard, flashed OOS and when I tried to flash magisk it gave me a error code 1. Tried blue twrp tried OOS 5.04, and still does the same thing please help!
I had the same error last night but it's all right, you can go ahead and continue, it will boot up. You can install the universal TWRP by codeworkx.

Let It boot oos first time, then try with magisk 16.3 in TWRP official.
As this is the only root option I can find for 8.x I need some help. When flashing in twrp and rebooting my phone just goes right back into twrp. I remember this happening way back when (when first getting my pixel xl) but I've been out of the game so long now I cannot remember how to fix it. Bravo to the team who cracked this thing back open!

How about a bit more info?
What version of TWRP are you running?
I am running TWRP 3.2.1.2 - Which I ran via fastboot: Fastboot boot trwp.img, then installed the zip of the same TWRP from within the original twrp boot with Fastboot from the storage of my phone. This is the only way to correctly install twrp.
What version of Magisk are you trying to use?
I am using V16.0 - I ran this after fully installing twrp. It installed no errors and I am showing rooted and passing all the security checks.
So i got it to work with v16.4. Had it rooted for a few hours and then installed the xposed module. Mistake. It got stuck in a bootloop, so i rebooted and reflashed my rom. That worked to get the phone booted back up and works fine, but now whenever i try to resintall magisk it just sits at the loading screen. Do i need to go back to completely stock and start over?

You didn't say what 'ROM' you are using.
Suggestions: a. Search ROM thread for Magisk related problems. b. Search Magisk thread for 'ROM' related problems.
Flash stock 8.1 firmware. Boot into system. Enable usb debugging. Reboot into boot loader, fastboot boot the twrp image, from TWRP flash magisk. ( I use 16.4). Reboot into system. If that works you know nothing is wrong with your phone. You have to reboot into the system at least once before flashing Magisk no matter what rom you're running.
Hi everyone,
I'm going mad about Pixel 2 XL Root. I'm Trying to use Magisk v18 on latest Android versione but I'm not able to root the device.
Everytime I try to flash Magisk the screen stays loading Google Icon in loop forever and ever. I've tried every guide on the web whitout success.
Anyone can help me?
[Edit]
Theese are the steps i take
-flash recovery twrp (ok)
-reboot to recovery (ok)
-flash magisk v18 (loop)

Don't feel too bad my friend, the P2XL is a quirky little bugger to say the least. I had a heck of a time rooting 9.0 after I updated from 8.1, then outa the blue, it worked. Here's a few steps to try.
1. Fastboot twrp, then flash magisk, try to boot.
2. Fastboot twrp, flash twrp.zip, boot up, then go back to twrp and flash magisk. If no go, do the same steps, except after you flash magisk, flash the magisk uninstaller zip, then flash magisk again.
3. Fastboot into twrp, flash twrp.zip, custom kernel.zip, then magisk.zip. if no go, then try the magisk uninstaller.zip method again.
4. Stick with it, be patient, sooner or latter you'll find the right combo. Also, it seems easier to root using a custom kernel, if your willing to try it :good:

Maybe give the guide linked in my sig a shot.
If that doesn't help, try the following:
-once you've permanently installed TWRP, try rebooting to recovery after each additional step BEFORE rebooting to system:
install cust kernel, reboot to recovery, reboot to system
install magisk, reboot to recovery, reboot to system
if that doesn't work, try doing a mass install after TWRP is permanently installed:
in the same flash, install cust kernel and magisk, reboot to system
These have helped other users who have had odd issues with their set ups, but in the end, Pixel 2 XL is a fickle beast
Best of luck!

SOLVED
The only way (for me) to root my Pixel 2 XL is follow theese steps:
Rooting with Magisk
NOTE #4: This section assumes you are not going to install TWRP. If you are, skip to the next section and just flash the latest Magisk zip after installing TWRP.
Download the Magisk zip from the official thread and install the manager from the zip.
Grab a boot image to patch (either the one from the latest factory image or a custom kernel one) and push it to your device:
Code:
adb push <path_to_file> /sdcard/Download
Open Magisk Manager and click the Install button.
Click "Install" at the first prompt then choose "Patch Boot Image File". A file manager will pop up.
Select the boot image you want to patch and let Magisk Manager patch it.
Pull it off your device:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img
Reboot into the bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Flash the boot image and reboot.
Code:
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
fastboot reboot
Open Magisk Manager and you should be rooted!
