I managed to pick up a Pixel 2 XL about a week ago. Initially I was very impressed and excited about it. 48 hours later I was "meh". The camera is great, assistant awesome at interpreting requests and to me - nothing beats the stock android experience.
Frankly I'm a bit disappointed at Google for allowing Verizon to sell this phone (and Google selling it) with the bootloader locked.
History:
I've owned every Nexus/Pixel since Google and HTC released the very first device.
Before the Pixel I used the S8. I preferred it's size to the S8+.
I think my dream device would be the Pixel experience in the S8 form factor or the Pixel XL's minimal bezel design in a smaller form factor. (angrily staring at the design team behind the Pixel 2)
After the 5T launch today - I'm toying with the idea of just buying one of those and selling this XL

What's that based on? Have you had a chance to handle the 5T? (Not trying to be funny, just curious)
I'm aware of the differences in specs. Looking at value, pocketing a couple hundred bucks while having a very similar experience is appealing.
Try it hands on style and report back. Good luck

It feels like I see something weekly about them stealing user data. No thanks. Also 1080 screen, no water resistance, some new BS camera that will under perform....nah. Happy with my Note 8 and 2 XL.
No, I haven't touched the 5T and have no desire to.

Not completely true. I just came from the 3T. It was great except the camera. It actually took over as my favorite phone (that I've owned) from the S3. I also have a OnePlus One and bought the 5 but didn't like it so I kept my 3T until I got the 2 XL.

See my previous comment to give you context to back up my opinion.
I agree, I have the note 8 and 2 xl currently. Thinking hard about returning 2 xl and buying the 5t. I got a locked bootloader also, this phone isnt as fun as a unlocked. Ill never buy from verizon again. I got lucky last year and was able to use depixel8 before the patch, not so lucky this time around.
the only advantage oneplus has over pixel is the price but if you can afford pixel, pixel is better choice.
Oneplus wont update the phone beyond 2 updates, that means you'll have to depend on custom roms after android P.
Also this my personal point of view that they are drifting away from the stock android slowly, their useless apps like clock, calculator, dialer doesnt make sense.
releasing a phone every 6 months is another thing i dont like.
pixel has faster updates, longer support, better camera.
I'm an ex oneplus 3 and oneplus 3t user btw.
but ultimately things do come to your personal preference and point of view.

I'm confused. The phone is awesome, but because you apparently chose to buy the Verizon version and the bootloader is locked, you don't like it.
First of all, you do realize that 99.9% of the population has no F-ing clue what a bootloader is, nor will they ever in a million years care to find out.
But according to you, Google is somehow at fault for allowing a carrier to sell a phone with an insignificant modification none of its mainstream customers will care about. And somehow this is a "problem"?
If you are so outraged about the bootloader, why didn't you buy the device directly from Google?
Second of all, since when does the Pixel 2 XL run stock Android? Stock Android is the latest AOSP build. At this point Google has a thinly skinned Android variant that can only be described as "Google's Android".
And if you're so into "stock" Android, why does it matter if the bootloader is locked? So you can put a custom rom onto the device and thereby not use "stock" Android?
Apologies but your post seems to have no purpose than to bash the Pixel 2 XL and suggest that buying another device is a good idea. Why do we need to tell you what to do? If you don't like it, get rid of it. End of story.
I had the OnePlus 5, awesome phone considering the price.
But the camera sucks, no waterproofing, and slow updates.
Plus the updated launcher sucks.

Well, thanks for your point of view. Certainly wasn't my intent to upset you or anyone else who enjoys the phone.
I never cited the bootloader lock as an issue for not liking the phone. I do LIKE the phone. Obviously I do not think it's a deal breaker because I DID knowing purchase a bootloader locked edition of the phone. My point is times are changing and I either need to change with them or find a better value. I said was disappointed in Google for allowing the change.
I'm stating from a value standpoint there may be other options that offer a similar experience. Of course value is perceived by everyone differently.
Thinking back to the Nexus 5, in my opinion one of the best phones released under Google's hand, was awesome because of the value. Yes, I'm aware that when the Nexus 6 came out we left value land for premium land.
What I meant by bringing up the 5T is - I can purchase very similar hardware for less and run the same applications at no additional costs. The trade off is a sacrifice in screen quality and camera quality??
Thank you on your clarification of what the true stock android experience is. To clarify, I prefer "Google's Android" to other manufacturer's implementation of Android. Is that better?
I got great feedback from others that I reminded me of the non-tangible benefits of owning the Pixel over a different device.

i didn't get the OP2 since I read terrible reviews about it, but I did get the OP3 and it has been amazing to be honest in my experience (except for the GPS lock bug that was present a few months, which has since been resolved). I am both impressed by the fluidity, speed, and frequency of updates on their software and disappointed by their decision to only provide major feature updates on the OP3/T for such a short time (not to mention launch the OP5T without Oreo)
I got the Pixel XL 2 since I wanted a better camera and so my SO could use my OP3 with 2 SIM cards (for more data), but I could have easily kept it and kept using it past the SW timeline via custom ROMs - even the camera is pretty amazing once you sideload the GCAM mod that lets you use Google's algorithm (SIGNIFICANTLY better post-processing than the stock camera)

No need to look angry at the design team mate. Can't make a small phone with small bezels without severely reducing the battery size. Which in turn will make battery life suck.

I like the procision of the S-Pen. I am also in sales and it's handy to quickly jot a quick note when working with customers to gain contact info or to highlight important points within the conversation.
I also use it as my in-flight media library with the expanded storage. The headphone jack is nice too!

Pixel XL is the best out of those 2 for photo's. Essential phone is a great device but the camera is bad. If photos and a 100% necessity then the XL is for you but best to try both devices if possible and see which you like more
Hi. I just bought the pixel XL yesterday. I used to have the nexus 5x. Let me tell you, the pixel doesn't break a sweat when it comes to performance. The camera is much better, the screen is AMOLED (as opposed to LCD in essential) and you're guaranteed 2 more years of updates with the pixel. Only 2 things the essential have better is a newer processor and a prettier design. Go for pixel.

You're asking for a subjective opinion. The beauty in the variety of devices available is that there is a device out there for individual needs or preference. It's best to research each one you want and the test it out in person.
Don't rely on biased opinions or opinions of those who've never handled these devices to persuade you into investing hundreds of dollars for a phone.
If there is a better, or "best" device, then no other devices should exist because why would someone settle for something inferior to what they can get?

I have a U11 great phone but I'm not a huge fan of sense anymore some useless bloat and in the EU updates are very slow
Keep the pixel and WAIT for newer phones, 2018 is said to be a great year for them
I'd say if you don't really need much more than what you have now, and don't need a fantastic camera, go essential. I'd much rather one over my XL, but the XL is still a great phone.

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on these forums. Currently on my Nexus 6P but looking to upgrade.
I've loved the use of stock & clean android. As well as regular updates and a decent camera. I'm interested in the pixel 2 XL but have seen a lot of bad press about issues.
What is the general consensus on the phone? Would the OnePlus give me a similar android experience? It's supposed to be getting a decent camera too and cost £499. Was interested in people's views!
Cheers!
The only real difference is if you want a really good rom community or if camera is more important.
It's simple If you want better camera with some rom support or root. Get the google 2xl..if you want rom support then go one plus 6

There's a thread on this somewhere on XDA if I'm not mistaken. The opinions I've seen are kinda like the ol Ford vs Chevy debate back in my day. The best summation I can give would be.....
If you want fast, regular security updates and arguably the best camera out there, then the P2XL is the call.
If you want more development, larger ram capacity, and an OK-good camera, then the OP6 is what your looking for.
Again, this is a very short synopsis

Along with horrible QC, the avg replacement device being 4 (not for blue shift either) lol(I'm on replacement #8). It's no longer the best camera. Stereo speakers are pretty meh, stock has it's pros but a crap ton of cons. Op gets fast updates as well lol, squeeze google assistant isn't a deal breaker. Google photos is like 3.00 a month for 100gb, the "free" isn't that impressive. No doubt pixel 2 xl isn't the obvious choice anymore lol. Also OP is 300.00 less lol and better build quality.

Well I bought 1 and I'm happy, there's blue shift but hopefully not so much. To me it's the best on HDR and that's why I bought it too. Well the best stereo speakersare those from ipx and i8p , and to me those on pixel are ok . Fast updates it's on the same week to me. Squeeze isn't a deal breaker but a nice feature. No Google photos are free and the full quality. Don't get me wrong I got op5t too,
But to me the pixel it's much "smarter" then the others mobiles

Interesting to see some of these replies! Pretty much the debate I'm having in my head haha. I love my Nexus as it's as great now as it was on day one... No bloatware and up until Oreo 8.1 fast updates.
I think for me the camera is hugely important. If one plus can release a camera that is better than the pixel 2 XL ... Then that may do it for me! Good to here they have fast(ish) updates too. Rumours are OnePlus 6 will have a triple digit dxomark I think!
Im the guy who keep buying a new phone in 2 or 3 months, I switched back and forth from any flagahips on the martket but there is always a few little things that keep bothering me to change a new phone until i got pixel 2 xl last week and its the perfect one.

both phones are great, but the pixel 2 XL is definitely a bit better in several ways
Loved my Nexus 6p and if it wasn't for the battery issues I'd probably still have it however I do really like the pixel. I don't really see the issues that have been reported. If you can afford both phones then the pixel is the one for me

Dxo mark rating doesn't really mean that much it is same as running a performance benchmarks like antutu etc
See, pixel has only one camera and still scored the highest but all these phones s9+ p20pro have 2 or 3 camera henceforth the triple digit figures
If pixel had secondary camera such as telephoto then it would also had a 100+ score
If you want to compare the dxo mark ratings then compare the main lens rating on their site
P20 pro vs pixel 2xl on youtube evry video in the end says they would go with pixel because it is consistent
Cheers ?

I think the same and all the videos that I saw the HDR it's always better on pixel 2,
Better portrait on the market
Better HDR on the market
2nd or 3rd on low light, even though I still think pixel got it better.
Better color accuracy
Etc etc
The only one thing that the pixel camera doesn't do it better, it's the zoom , well that's normal with only one camera
---------- Post added at 08:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:08 AM ----------
I use to change roms every week but now I do prefer stability and security.
One plus got 8.1 and I'm already on 9.0 that's a huge difference, and Will be always like that.
If oneplus 6 support VZW...bye bye Pixel 2 XL. The oneplus is a quality, low profile/thin bezel phone with great dev support from their company and online on XDA. They won't say if they are going to support VZW yet, but heard they are looking for a US partner in the coming 6 months. The Pixel 2 XL is so bulky, thick top/bottom space, and the features of the OS are lagging behind a few things that the OnePlus Beta 5T phone currently has that the 6 will have baked in, like fling/nonav bar gestures like iPhone. They've had it for months in the beta, all the apps are scaled to use the screen space without the bar...not such thing in the standard Android/Pixel OS builds, and then, not done at all or very well. I know devs try their best, but it isn't proper.
Only thing about OnePlus is the camera, next one should be much better hopefully. But then again, unless it works on Verizon...doesn't really matter, and my choices are limited for modding/bootloader unlocking etc..to the Google phone really, or HTC.
Thanks very much for all the advise guys! Great to see arguments for both phones haha!
Currently can get the Pixel 2 XL for £600 from carphone warehouse. The OnePlus 6 is likely to be £500.
I think the make or break for me is going to be the camera. I'll wait and see what the camera is when the OnePlus 6 is officially announced on 16th may. If the camera is better that may sway it for me, if not I'll get the pixel 2 XL!
Hi pixel users,
I want to learn if you are having same thoughts like me. I want to replace my 2017 pixel 2xl but never convinced by any brand that is real update. Google camera( only photo not video) always makes me stick with my device. Pixel 3xl was never upgrade when it first released. Oneplus 7 is still behind when competing the camera. Pixel 4 will be bazel king still and it is not sold in my country Turkey. Galaxy phones are always washed out camera and bad battery with exynos. Huavei having problem with Google so hard to trust. So another year with pixel 2xl probably.
I've had similar conclusion. Pixel 3 - ugly, Pixel 4 - looks like it's gonna be ugly too. OnePlus phones are the closest competitors in my eyes with their clean software and continued long Android updates, but camera still isn't on Pixel level and water and ingress protection isn't IP certified. Samsung's software isn't for me and their update cycle is terrible.
So Pixel 2 for my wife and Pixel 2 XL for me are still one of best phones out there for us, while it's getting Android updates I won't be changing them soon.
These of course are subjective thoughts.

I need good camera, so only pixel, samsung or Huawei. I tired of big phones, so thinking about s10e. People talks what oneUI is good and clean like stock and I like what s10e has flat sreen.
I like, what 1.5 year old pixel is fast like new.

I agree with that!
I wish everyone would stop making tall skinny phones already. I love my 2xl performance wise, but sorely miss my Nexus 6 screen. That was the PERFECT size phone. It's bezels are close in size to the 2xl. If only the guts were easily swapped between the two of them!

While I love my P2XL and 3aXL, I would get behind an updated Nexus 6 in a heartbeat! Next to the HTC M7, the Nexus 6 was my absolute favorite device. Would love to get that phone's body with upgraded internals (really wish it was possible to update your device to newer hardware without changing the outside).

I thought to buy one but battery and camera performance is worse then pixel trust me. Size is perfect but has some disadvantages. It ıs also important which region you are from. SD is a lot better than exynos.

I really think that it will be future proof but bezels is making me think and the worst part is the region. It is not sold in my country Turkey. I have a bit hope for this year. They may start selling because 3a and 3axl are great alternatives for Turkish market. I would probably go for pixel 4 if I can.

Camera will be ok, I had samsung top line and I know Samsung's camera.
Yes battery worse, that's main disvadvantage for me.

I'm starting to see a lot of these opinions about the 2xl. Mine has been one of the best phones I've owned. Oneplus 7 pro or pixel 4 are the only phones I would consider.
I just read that the original Pixel and Pixel XL will be getting no more monthly security updates. Will this send you shopping for a new(er) phone? When I had Motorola phones, they were almost never up-to-date with security updates. I guess going a few months without an update isn't the end of the world. Once it's more than 6 months past due, I'll probably start shopping for something more recent. I do love this phone though.

Looks like one last update in December that will include Nov and Dec security patches. Probably do the same as you and replace or maybe flash a custom ROM not sure. Pixel 3a XL looks tempting.

I just got a 3xl and it is pretty nice. I suppose the 3a would also be a good option.

I noticed you can get open box or refurbished 3xl for $350-380 range and roughly same for 3axl. So not sure which one I would get. I replaced battery on my XL about 8 months ago an phone is still a strong performer so can't justify getting rid of just yet.
I know... It is still a great phone. I passed it along so it will stay in the family for awhile yet.

I'll hold off upgrading and use stock custom roms for the security patches, then hopefully the Pixel 4a/XL is a reality this coming May. If not, I'll just wait it out for the Pixel 5/XL.
I will definitely wait till the Pixel 4a release, see, and come to a decision. If they bring UFS back then I will purchase it. I see no point in upgrading to a Pixel 3, let alone a 3a. With a phone in OG Pixel's calibre, one should be able to skip three generations at least. What a pity, Google stopped the support, for a perfectly capable phone.
I never bothered with them security patches anyway, only flashed every three months or so. So running an outdated device in terms of security for six months is really nothing.

+1! Same.
But I always use custom roms anyway. I hope a 4axl drops that's around 3-$400.
Everyone always makes a HUGE deal out of security patches. I don't think its such a big deal. Wasn't long ago that Google made some kinda statement saying nobody could hack their security patch and if so then they'd pay whoever did it 5k. Some kid did it a few days after google made the statement. I mean sure it makes us a tad more vulnerable but who hasn't gotten email or social media compromised before? I think we are good. ?

+1 Really have no reason to get a new phone, Pixel XL just works. This is the first phone I've not needed to use a custom Rom since getting the OG Droid way back when. Pixel 4 w/o finger print does not thrill me.
So, any Rom recommendations [emoji6]

UNOFFICIAL Lineage 17 is likely my choice, but I'm waiting for it to go "Official" before I jump in and some minor bugs get ironed out.
Thanks
Hi I am looking to make the same upgrade

Google search "DU rom" and use latest pie build for marlin from August under official tab.... It may be Pie but I've already flashed to Android 10 and to me Pie is better, for now anyway. Many Substratum themes work better because they haven't been updated and looks like many that are pie compatible aren't going to be... I use Alined substratum theme on DU 13.5. I have found no bugs whatsoever. Rock solid stable and awesome battery and performance!! DU has always been a favorite of mine. ?

Does being on Custom Rom still offer unlimited original quality Google Photo Storage for this phone. I'm keeping this phone due to this reason only, having unlimited original quality upload. Thinking of buying a new phone but somehow having it so photos get uploaded from my Pixel XL. Bit of a task I guess but well worth it imo.
I know this is off topic, but there isn't a lot of traffic here anymore and most of the og pixel XL users here are probably in this discussion.... Do you guys have issues with your autorotation and auto brightness on the pixel XL?
I love the pixel XL I bought except for these 2 issues. It can't figure out the screen brightness or the autorotation. Stock room, not rooted. I went back to the OnePlus 5 for dual Sims and the second OnePlus 5 I got was just like the first one I killed in saltwater. Perfect Auto rotate and auto brightness. The pixel has slightly better camera, smoothness and was better about updates (OnePlus 5 is still on pie until spring of 2020). But overall I like the OnePlus better (for a few reasons but the biggest is the auto rotate and auto brightness or only semi functional on my pixel XL. Maybe it's just my unit?
