Will Asus Zenfone 5z ever receive good community support? - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

I am actually thinking of buying this device. Now I have noticed that even after such a long time from it's release, this device still doesn't has any official Twrp recovery and basically overall the community support for custom ROMs and Kernels is close to nothing. Now I have flashed a lot of Roms and Kernels in my current device can I expect the same from this device?!
Please express your thoughts, your inputs would help me. Final question : should I buy it if want the above things for zenfone 5z as my future device?

You are quite correct on that account, I am myself waiting for the same.
I share similar sentiments and would love some custom support; that being said, we do have a couple of developers for the device in question.
As far as i know, one of them is yet to get his hands on the device and the other one is busy with his life. It is unclear at the moment as to when can we expect things to catch some pace.
On the other front, I would recommend this device wholeheartedly against the likes of OnePlus 6 and Pocophone F1 (the famous competitors), quite simply because it IS better than those 2 in terms of raw performance and overall usability.
OnePlus does excel in terms of software support (it being close to stock android) and the added touch of water resistance however, that's all there is to it. I personally like the little compact dimensions and the super LCD screen (tbh not a fan of AMOLED screens personally) of the 5Z better. Pocophone F1 on the other hand is a total no-go as the built quality and overall device is way off from the 5Z; however, in terms of the specs provided for the price it asks for is quite impressive and would be the best choice if you are on a tight budget.
There is really no "wrong" choice here, it just boils down to what you personally prefer the most.
For me 5Z >= OP6 >> Pocophone F1. Cheers.

I agree with you even I like the Asus more than the oneplus 6 and Poco F1, however as stated before before I buy a device I first take a look at its community support and in this case, well we know....
I'll wait, maybe a few more weeks perhaps, when I finally see something then I may buy it, otherwise I will have to forcefully change my choice. :crying:
I wish the overall community to be a little more responsive here, I mean it's been a while since this device has been released. Poco F1 for instance already has proper guides and Rom. It's high time.

We will work to help make that happen. If Asus wants to grow in Mobile devices and not just me to a bit more then they will continue to grow with updates and releases.....

Same thing for me
Hey Guys! So Flipkart in India is having a BigBillionDay Sale and i was wondering what to buy Xiaomi Poco F1 or Asus Zenfone 5Z. There is a lot of Development going on for the Poco F1. And i like to play around with Cellphones like rooting and stuff. I really like the Z5Z and its on Offer, POCO F1 is good too. Kindly help me out to choose. How's the after sales service of Asus?

Asus has already released an official statement stating Pie would arrive on 5Z by the end of January 2019.
Yes asking for this ETA is justified as it's a company policy to give timely updates, asking for ETA to custom devs for their ROMs is however rude.

Pie is up, are there any test build or development started for our device?

Mi Band: Xiaomi's fitness smart wristband

I'm not sure whether the right forum to post this thread.
Does anybody know about the new wristband that Xiaomi launched yesterday?

You won't see any screen on it, even no LED screen to show the time.
But it doesn't mean Mi Band is bland or worthless. I think it's quite powerful.:good:
- Unlock your phone via bluetooth without passcode (using BLE)
- Fitness monitor: track various health metrics and sync with your phone
- Sleep tracker and smart alarm: vibrate to wake you up during light sleep
- Notification: vibrate and flicker when you receive a new SMS or call
- Waterproof with the rating of IP67: you can wear it when showering
- 30 days standby when full charged
And the most awesome thing is, it's very cheap: only $13! It must be one of the cheapest smart band on the market.
But there are some cons:
No screen. However this makes the battery life longer.
It's only compatible with Mi 3 or Mi 4 with Android 4.4 based MIUI (It's the worst thing! )
Any ideas about Mi Band? Will you buy one if you had a Mi 3 or Mi 4?
Useful additions for Mi Band
Unlock and call reminder features are only for Xiaomi phones, is that right?
And how about whole wristband, does it work work on "normal" Android phone? My common sense telling me that it should - there is no restriction, it is just a bluetooth transmission. But maybe I'm wrong?
This looks brilliant. I was actually researching BLE technology and considering making something like this to unlock my phone. Seems I don't have to, at least if Xiaomi makes it support other devices.

I think it should work on other Android phones, but it couldn't, Even the older Xiaomi phone's like Mi 2S is not compatible.
Xiaomi is too "closed" now. Xiaomi will lose many potential customers if they keep doing that.

Yeah...I hope the next generation (Mi Band 2?) can support more devices.
Xiaomi is following Sammy's footstep, trying to get new customers by releasing phone specific gadgets. The only difference with Gear - that one got rooted, but with something as simple as smartband - most likely it will be locked to their phone. The same as they announced before about release of MI pressy-clones. Also, you have to realize that $13 is heavily subsidized price, they are giving it away at the cost or maybe below the cost, just so they can get new MI customers. Similar to what Amazon does with their tablets (hoping to get more Amazon shopping customers) or Google did with Nexus 7 (trying to jump start Android tablet business to take away share from iOS).

I heard a rumor that the cost of Mi Band is only CN¥ 49 (about $8.5)
i think in europe it will cost triple
where have people pre-ordered this from?
It starting to show up on websites that sell xiaomi and even aliexpress (although the price is higher than announced, but still a good deal considering).
Im just wondering, this does work with other android phones or just with xiaomi? Anyone knows yet? Its still new, so there probably isn't much info on that yet

HTCMania discussed in that it can be used with any Android, a user has been tested with a Nexus5 ... I have installed the apk without problems, but this in Chino, hopefully soon be translated into Spanish or English.
They have the apk file, but being new I can not put link.
Good to know!
We will probably start seeing more development on these as they start to get to more people.
But the function that it was to unlock/remove pin or pattern when you grab the phone/close to the hand with the bracelet probably won't work, right? Unless someone comes out with an android mod that will allow that.
Still, as a fitness tracker you can't beat the price
When in stock?

Mi 9 is too big. I like the underscreen finger print and the design of the Mi 9 SE. The only problem is the battery life that is poor..
I go from s8 to mi9 then mi9se. Mi9 is good in performance but poor battery. Mi9se battery is much much better. And i like both of then got tele/wide angle camera

You do not miss the s8? Maybe the battery and screen of the S8 are better than that of the mi9se
Me too, I'm thinking to upgrade (or downgrade, if the word fits) my s8(exynos) to mi9se. All other new phones are too big, and quite too expensive.(Even the S10e)
My main problem with s8 is battery life and lack of developers. Will it be any better if I switch to mi9se?

I came from S8 and I am very happy. No drawback since I changed to MI9Se. Battery is much better, although the capacity is almost the same as S8. I have no clue why, all Samsung phone have such a bad battery management

I get around 6 to 7 hours SOT

Newer phone = Newer battery,

If gaming performance is not that important to you, trust me, you won't miss that much. Screen is basically the same, both phones are snappy but navigation is a bit different though especially the gestures (I love the One UI gestures, it's more convenient having the recent, home and back button in the same place down the screen rather than swiping the left and right on the edge of the screen). I bought the 9 SE as a secondary phone to my Galaxy S9+ because my S9+ rear camera and fingerprint module has already failed just right after the 1 year warranty period expired (just my pure luck). Having it fix here in my country cost way too much money so I just decided to get a phone with a decent camera instead until I can renew my contract from carrier next year.

Well, Pixel phones are not officially supported or even sold in my country. I can get it in the grey market but I won't make such gamble especially if I'm spending $300 and above, warranty is important too if I will be investing that much.
Since I had my mi9se, I'll write some things that aren't noticeable without it:
1. the camera bump is really tall. 1.55mm isn't something like unnoticeable. also, its edges are sharp, so it's not a good design.
2. it's noticeably heaver than s8. my s8 without case&screen protection weighs 150g(using with really thin TPU case: 10g), and mi9se with glass screen protector but without case weighs 165g. BTW, stock TPU case is 16g, and it's not even fully covering the camera bump.
3. Fingerprint in display is cool, but not as fast as traditional ones. Though, it's not that slower compared with my unrooted S8.(using havoc ROM)
4. Proper GCam mod won't be avalable very soon, because of a bug made by xiaomi. It's snapdragon, so HDR+ process is way faster than S8, but because of that bug, pictures have a yellowish tone.
5. Custom ROM development isn't very popular for a Xiaomi device.
6. No waterproofing, and durability is unknown. If you are wondering what I'm saying, go search "jerryrigeverything" at youtube, and watch his video about xiaomi/redmi.
Now for the good part:
1. The display is very bright. Brighter than S8.
2. Having a wide angle lens is nice. Really, it's nice.
3. There definitively are developers, and we've got proper ROM(Havoc, came just in a few days ago)! yes, non-MiUI, non-GSI, proper custom ROM!
All in all, not a perfect device, but great bang for the buck.
BTW, mi cc9e is coming with a bigger battery, but I suspect it's gonna be really heavy.
In my Opinion the main reason to get a 9SE instead of a S8 is the price. So if you have to look at your money take the 9SE.
In a week the MI A3 should be purchaseable, this phone could be a choice as well. Not sure if a MI A3 Lite is gonna be released as well.

Meizu 16T (SD855, 6.5″ SAMOLED, 4500mAh) - information, reviews and discussion

Bought a Meizu 16T during black friday day for $282 at Meizu Online Store on Aliexpress. The phone arrived today.
First impression:
+ It feels really light and comfortable in the hand (183g), Its made of plastic which I prefer over glass.
+ As usual on phones from Meizu the build quality is great.
+ Nice notchless design. Got the purple version which I like a lot.
+ The screen is big and vibrant. I really like the 18.6 aspect ratio. Wider than most other phones which is great when reading. Hate super-tall phones.
+ Most phones from meizu are a bit laggy (due to poor software optimization) but this phone feels really fast.
- No global firmware yet which is a big problem. I am on Flyme 8.0.0.0A. It was easy to install google services and play store but several apps do not work (Netflix, HBO etc).
Does anyone else have this phone?

To my knowledge, there is no custom rom support yet. However, the phone has just been released so there is a good chance that their will be some custom roms in the future.
BTW, several different gcam mods work out of the box on 16T. I played around with a couple of different mods yesterday. However, almost all of them suffer from some problems like low color saturation. The stock camera seems to be decent but a custom made gcam mod for 16T would be fantastic.

No, it was probably some smudges on the screen when I took the photo (alternatively just reflections). The screen is in perfect condition.
I just found a working version of Netflix for 16T:
https://consumer.huawei.com/en/comm...s-Apps]Working-Netflix-Version/topicId_38359/
A experimental version of MoKee Rom for 16T is now available.
https://reameizu.com/how-to-flash-m...0KUb_OZP2giyMCWQlkElkGBTbI_sU7D_4K9tUl3IIPaoI
However, I will wait until a more stable version is released before I go through the hassle of trying to install this in on my phone.
Thx for posting this. Very intriguing phone. Really the only issue is software. Well, also the mediocre camera. Anyway it's price : performance ratio is unrivaled so it should be popular with a lot of techies. Custom roms should follow suit. And hopefully a custom gcam also. I might take a chance on this thing.
In Flyme, do you get full English menus when the system language is set to English? Some reviews on Aliexpress seem to indicate it's a mix of both Chinese and English. But I'm guessing they must be referring to Meizu specific apps.

Yes, the menu is fully in English except for the "Flyme labratory" sub menu (which is not important anyway). I have been using 16T now 3 months. I like it as much now as I did when I wrote my first impressions review. The most important advantage for me is the width of the screen. The with of 16T is 78mm compared to 74-76 mm which is the width used for most other "large" phones. It really makes a difference, you get a much better viewing experience compared to these super tall phones which are fashionable nowadays. Another advantage is the lightness, it feels much lighter in the hand compared to all phones I have tried/used for the last 2 years. However, if you are okay with a heavy phone and 20:10 ratio I would buy something else (like a Redmi K30). MIUI is better than Flyme and the camera is probably way better on K30 .
It is currently for € 330, do you recommend it to a friend who does not know about smartphones but keeps them for a long time? (Currently he has a mi5!) I see that it already has Android 10.

Would not recommend this phone to a beginner due to some problems with google service compatibility. The stock rom on this phone have android 9 (not 10).
I am still using this phone as my daily driver. I have bought and sold a lot of different phones lately second hand (Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Huawei P30, Redmi Note 9S etc). However, I have not yet find a better phone than 16T. All other phones I have tried lately feel much worse in the hand (too heavy) and have to narrow screens. IMO if this phone had a global firmware and a better camera it would be the perfect phablet.
Hello. I was considering buying this as my daily phone. Problem for me is the rom, as I am not too fond of the flyme os. Have anyone of you tried this custom rom (GSI)
Lineage 17
https://gearallnews.com/how-to-install-lineage-os-17-gsi-for-meizu-16t-android-10/
Lineage 17.1
https://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/lineageos-17-1-meizu-16t/
AOSP Android 10
https://www.getdroidtips.com/android-10-meizu-16t/
From what I understand (GSI - Generic System Image) is like an all-in-one rom (correct me if I’m wrong) that works with Android 9 that supports Project Treble.
Seeing this is a relatively new device, i think there is no post here on xda on custom roms for this device. Have anyone of you tried this method? As I do not have a way to test/confirm its validity (No actual unit yet). If you want to try it just remember to try it at your own risk.
Also I don’t know if it’s a fake site or whatnot so beware.
I have this phone and flashed Mokee as they already have a stable release. I just mustered the courage to follow the youtube vid here.
What I liked about Mokee is that it has built in call recording just like in the stock rom (flyme). It also boots quick (less than half a minute) just like the stock rom.
However the full functionality of the camera doesn't work unless you download GCam (tried many versions until one works with 4K60 video in hevc encoding).
Also the onscreen fingerprint scanner is a little iffy and sometimes would lock up the screen if it doesn't work for some unknown reason.

Considering LineageOS support might end, any other phone with unique aesthetics?

Before I got my Nextbit Robin I was very happy with the Nokia N900, with great community support. But that came to an end eventually. I then stumbled upon the Nextbit Robin and I loved it.
Seeing Nextbit Robin LineageOS support might be dieing out (still no 17.x release, 15.x support has ended, and 16.x is the next in the line to stop receiving support) I want to prepare myself for the worst.
One of the things I have always hated how all Android phones pretty much look alike. Nextbit Robin was a big exception to that.
Could anyone provide suggestions on good alternatives to the Nextbit Robin phone? I will instantly wipe it and install LineageOS on it. Although long term support can not be predicted, I am hoping for it (perhaps being backed by a stable company might help with that).
I do not like extremely huge phones and I do not play any games.

LineageOS 17.1 for our nextbit robin is in WIP as you can see https://github.com/LineageOS/android_device_nextbit_ether
I suggest to buy a oneplus device or pixel since they are the most modding friendly

I got a OnePlus 8, you'll be better off with the upcoming Pixel 5. As I said I bought a OnePlus 8, seeking an interesting phone like the Nextbit. But to me it tasted like a mainstream phone with customizations ideas you find in ROMs. It comes with a heavy Privacy Policy, and that's quite a downside. Don't get me wrong, it's super fast and smooth, but if you self h for something exciting, a true experience, go for the Pixel. They always come with original idea and the Pixel 5 is rumored to be more reasonably priced than my OP8.
I'm happy with my OP8, but I think Google Products are better.

There has been only been a bunch of commits on the 26th of June and then it died out again.
I do hope this device gets to see more of LineageOS, but I am not that hopeful.

Just considered your suggestions but these phones are pretty huge. I am jealous at Apple users for the iPhone SE 2020.
The LineageOS support on these devices seem superb though. I wish OnePlus would consider releasing a smaller phone. I really dislike these huge phones that hardly fit your pocket.

Yeah, me too, I think that the smaller form factor is better, with a good screen to body ratio you'd be able to make a really good phone. Well let's what the future holds

The latest OTA is version 11.2.8.8.LE15AA, I think that one in the screenshot is the full version download preceding the latest OTA updates, but IDK for sure lol
Edit - my default kernel was built on Jul 8 2021, and android security date/level is 7/1/21 ... HTH
I read about OnePlus getting new people to make a team to work on Open Beta for 9/9Pro.
I like that!
New team is not something to like. It might be good but also be a disaster. Questions should be asked like WHY????? are they getting a new team? What happened to all the revenue they made and how are they using it? Who is controlling the company, One Plus or the Chinese government? Why the delay to begin with. I realized DP1 was developers preview and not beta but why not allow Google updates for DP 2 and three. Who cares that Oxygen was not on it yet. Now that stability been reached with Beta, let's us Early Adopters adopt. I refuse to buy a Google Pixel love my one plus but was so excited that it allowed BL to be unlocked but I feel let down by OP. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic to begin with

This update is from June. (end of the month)
There's an update (11.2.8.8) from July. (end of month)
So, following this logic, this week OnePlus might release a new one.

Lol US government and Chinese as well because even though apple says they are all American blah blah but they are manufactured in China as well. Just all marketing etc
People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change.

People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change. I also think not only priorities of people's lives but also Android itself and the huge slowdown of phone evolution. Actual since smartphone sales slowed companies like apple and Google created smart watches to help increase revenues. They first used the old nostalgic movies like knight rider or James bond to sell them even though Smart watches cannot do anything close to what the movies portrayed. You can make flippable phones but you won't see hologram s coming out of your phone. I know we love to always think of our technology being limitless but that dam law of physics keeps getting in the way. So now they will start with AR glasses with WebView capabilities. And when that fails, which it will because who wants a HUD I'm their line of sight. In 30 years we will events have implants and chips that will help the brain and technology link. Isn't it Neurolink that exists now. That technology is decades away. Because again we do not know how the body/brain will react and now I'm having flashback from the movie Black Mirror.

Ain't no updates that can save this POS.
the support update page is only updated from time to time, it does not repesent the actual stage of the software.
At this point 11.2.8.8 is up 2 date. OnePlus updates bi-monthly.

There's closed beta testing so maybe devs are focusing to it. Sad to see no fix for Gmail notification bug...

I think the gmail app just sux. I've experienced the late notifications across quite a few devices personally.
Oxygen sucks because of google. The more google on it the more bad Oxygen will be.
Also the King of Bloatware, samsung already gets Androis 12.
And OnePlus release 9R or something...
They are starting the ultimate consolidation of Oxygen OS into Color OS. How is OnePlus going to manage all these phones? Do they even have enough staff to manage all these phones?
Unfortunately they only update bi-monthly.
I saw a user suggest on their official forums basically say "hey guys, how about monthly updates like your competition?" in a friendly way, and a mod basically said **** off and closed the thread. I wasn't impressed.
This was my first OnePlus device, maybe my last.
That 12 Beta debacle was ridiculous.
After having the 7, 8, & 9 Pro, I will be leaving the building as well!
Is this a joke? About month last update and now ppl are think this is over. How do u even can survive this life?
I like how people actually think theres a decent alternative to oneplus these days. At least not in the US. Maybe google if the pixel 6 is actually premium/flagship this time. Otherwise theres no other brand with an unlockable bootloader, which is how they get away with so much bloat. Personally im fine of oneplus becomes a little more like the others as long as the hardware is premium and the bootloader is unlockable.
9 Pro is my first and last phone from OP if they can't get they BS sorted out. The phone has horrible battery life, scrolling issues, and it doesn't get better with next updates. Also, wtf is that BS with the bi-monthly update scheudle? A device like this should be fixed ASAP, the users are experiencing problems and neet to wait, the hell is that policy? Would they wait 2 months to release an update if someone would find a security bug too? So stupid. Get your **** together OnePlus.
