Dropped inputs in games due to aggressive prevention of "ghost touches" - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Just saw this today: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarlightStage/comments/9e9u7j/heads_up_to_those_considering_of_buying_the/
Was having an issue myself where in Real Racing 3, if I pressed down with my whole thumb, not just the tip, it would stop registering that I'm still holding the button.
Discuss.

I'm the OP for that thread you linked. :highfive:
The touch input is still not fixed, I'm considering whether to sell the Tab S4 and just get the MiPad 4.
For those wondering what the problem is:
The Galaxy Tab S4 is just plain bad for quick action games, since fast and simultaneous inputs are registered as erroneous and ignored by the tablet. You will also notice a huge input lag when you use multi touch.
Download any touch screen test app and just try holding one finger down on the tablet and swiping across the screen with another finger. You'll see the input trailing far behind your finger
Also, while holding one finger down on the screen, swipe across the screen quickly with another finger, and you'll see that it leaves a large 'blank' spot on the screen, which means the touch didn't register there at all
Lastly, try swiping in opposite directions quickly and the touch goes crazy.
You can see an example from the pictures attached (not mine):
Image 1: 1 finger swipe, so far everything is OK

So far I've tried live chat with Samsung support, but as usual they weren't of much help. They suggested I report using the Samsung Members app, which I've since done so, but I have no way of knowing if they received the report. The touch screen problem is not an isolated case; on Japanese twitter and 5ch forum, you'll find a lot of complains about the tab s4's touch input too.

Thanks, any insight into my problem? When I press down with the fleshy part of my thumb, it stops registering a touch. Been trying to turn off various palm rejection features, but no luck. my first samsung device. are there any settings you know I could mess with?

I don't have a solution myself either. We can only hope Samsung releases an update to fix it.

Also having this problem when playing MOBA games, it's extremely frustrating specially with games that you have to do a couple of things on the screen at the same time.
Now the question is, will be ever be fixed by samsung?

Really guys wouldn’t it be better to use PS4 Dual Shock 4 controller? Or Xbox One X controller with your Tab S4 ?
If your truly serious about gaming ? Jump on your Xbox One X or PS4. Problem solved!

There are games that aren't compatible with a controller, that are also not available on console. I have consoles and PC for gaming. but it would be nice to play the game you want on the tab right? after all we paid a premium for it.

it does, but as i've said there are games that are not compatible, not just with the controller but with the controls. like for example the aiming of skills for MOBA games.

I'm wondering if the touch problem is a hardware thing. My original s4 was hardware 00, and my replacement is hardware Rev.04 and doesn't seem to have touch problems now.

Where do you see the hardware rev info? Also what firmware are you in during the time that you had the problem and currently?
Hopefully this is not a hardware thing because samsung in our country isn't really helpful when it comes to admitting problems on their end. I had an awful experience with the whole Note7 fiasco

here's us hoping that it would get fixed by a FW update

Apparently there's a new firmware (J3) update released for our country (Philippines). i'll flash it tom and will let you guys know if it fixes the touch problem. if it does, then i'm gonna to stop considering buying the new iPad Pro hahaha

I'm happy to tell you guys that the latest (J3) firmware fixed the touch problem for me. Here's the test i did following the pattern on the first post (i also played a MOBA game before posting here, just to confirm that the problem is gone)

epson vs nova screen. differences?

I've been reading that there are two different screens being used. One from epson, and one from nova. What are the differences between these screens. Are they both still 16 bit? Is the brightness different? Any other differences?
Is there any way to tell which screen you are getting before you buy? Are evo's still being made with both screens?
Not sure anyone knows the answers to those questions. I have a revision 0003 with a nova screen, and before this fps fix business came up I was happy with the look. The touch input lag concerns me more than the 30 fps thing right now.
how do you check your hardware revision?
Go to settings -> About phone -> Hardware Information, under Hardware Version
0002 = Novatel
0003 = Could be either, you have to run and pipe some log to find out which one you have.

Too bad. The touch lag and 16 bit screen are what are making me lean towards the galaxy s right now. I'm waiting to see if either the htc evo gets better by the time the galaxy comes to sprint (in some form) or the galaxy shows up with big problems making the evo relatively better. Hopefully the epson screen will fix at least the lag. 18 bits would put me over the edge.
I have a 002, im very curious on what the differences on the screen's are.
Nobody really knows except for the epson 30fps limit has been fixed and the novak not.
People are reporting the novak has a purplish tint to it. the side by side pic it looks pretty obvious but YMMV..
the biggest issue I have with the whole thing is from the users who have applied the 30fps fix they all say input lag is gone and its very noticeable!
Maybe at some point the issue will be fixed for the EVO's with novak screens but I'm not sure I am willing to bet being locked into a phone and carrier for 2 years.

There is still a week and a half to exchange your phone. Do you know how LONG that is in XDA-time? We have had our phones for 2 and a half weeks (granted we had root before release but still) and look at what all has been accomplished.
Personally I reloaded my sense (on a 002 nova) and I found my color to be in between the two (not as "purple" as the first and not as "black" as the second). I got caught up in the "purple vs true black" debate, but I'm finding that it really isn't as much of an issue to me.

Everyone keeps saying this but I don't think it's true. You have a week and half to RETURN the phone (assuming you bought on launch day). You have nearly a year to exchange the phone for any kind of defect because of the warranty.

I believe after the 30 days you get a refurbished phone whereas if you do it within the 30 days you can get a brand new replacement. YMMV, but I know with the relationship I have with my Sprint store theres a good chance I could get a brand new replacement even after my 30 days...

For those of you who are interested, here is a picture of novatec vs epson. I happened to get a 002 with novatec and my brother got a 003 with epson. The left one is mine and the right one is his. These phones were taken in the dark with the same screen brightness and same wallpaper. You can see that with the novatec screens, the color has a purple hue to it. The background is supposed to be black, but you can clearly see it looks kind of purple.

The purple hue looks ugly imho.
I'm still waiting for sprint.com to get some more units in (hopefully 0004) so I can replace all 3 of ours, and I'm getting scared because it's been 2.5 weeks without any. ;(

Agreed, but I don't know that all Nova panels have that hue. I have an 03 with the Nova panel and it definitely does *not* look like that.
I would just say I believe there will be a 30fps fix for the Nova panel. The only reason the Epson was first is because that's what the Developer had.
Also, ever panel tends to have their own advantages and disadvantages. I'd be very surprised if the Epson panel is the "ultimate" panel. There are probably tradeoff's to both panels ... we just haven't recognized them yet.
I do believe the Epson panel in that picture looks to have problems with the blacks looking a little grayer and the whites look a little white-washed, but that could simply be due to the brightness.
Who knows...maybe the 0004 revision will have the best panel of all. ;-)
Honestly I just want my input lag gone..I don't care about the colors really mine seems fine..
Part of me is just like hey if I am going to wait around for a complete fix then I might as well wait for the next phone that doesn't have it to begin with.

Well the 30fps fix also seemed to fix the input lag.
I understand why you might want to jump ship for a different phone. If I didn't love everything else about the EVO (and know that the issues I have are fixable), I would probably be in the same boat. Having said that, it seems like every device has their own issues. Granted the HTC devices I purchase always seem to always have a few more for some reason...

physical keyboard for the loss.
Too each their own and i guess this could fill a niche....but I hate sliders....i have yet to see one that doesn't compromise the structural integrity and durability of a device (hell some of them even feel loose and wobbly out of the box much less after 6 months to a year of usage). Plus....i feel in landscape mode the onscreen keyboards on the captivate and many of the new larger screen devices are as fast, accurate, and functional as any of the physical keyboards i have tested.
i am waiting the month out to see what develops with the Prime.
If it doesn't come to ATT is will either go with the SGSII or wait out the III which could be 1st quarter 2012.
For me a physical keyboard would make me pass even on a nicely spec'd out device.

The Captivate is the Honda Civic of smart phones. They're probably just capitalizing on its good name. I have to wonder, though, how many people will associate the name with a bad GPS and avoid it.

If I'm paying for a GPS, it should work. PERIOD. The box the phone came in says it has a GPS, so I expect it to work. If the GPS in my $200 phone can't tell me where I am on a sunny day, I have a problem with that.
GPS and Google's turn-by-turn navigation are one of the big reasons I chose Android. I travel all over the place for work, and I'm not about to hit up a travel store on every trip to purchase a local street map for $10 when I can get instant directions to wherever I need to go, complete with traffic info, right on my phone.
After a trip to PA with my boss using his Droid X GPS, I was excited to get an Android phone. Except that I got a Captivate that took 15 minutes to tell me I was in the next town from where I actually was. Sorry if it disturbs your zen-like bliss, but I felt that I had been tricked, and I wasn't happy about it.
I don't use GPS because I'm an idiot. I use GPS because it saves me a lot of time and hassle when I'm someplace unfamiliar. I used to draw maps for a Civil Engineering firm...I can certainly read one.
Maybe you don't get out of your own neighborhood very often and have no real use for a GPS. Maybe you have a photographic memory and have every road in the US etched in your gray matter. Some of us have to fly to Arizona or California, Drive to Pennsylvania or into DC, or travel to some other place we've never been before with little to no notice. Some of us even go on vacation once in a while and don't know where anything is. Why would I spend money on a map when Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation are available at no extra cost?
Just because something isn't important to you doesn't mean it's not important or useful to others...or that their reasons aren't legitimate. People are stupid because they're stupid. Not because they choose one tool over another.
Cant Wait
Been waiting for this phone for 2 years.... not been a decent QWERTY on android. still sat with my TP2.
a couple of things been causing me to scratch my head.
Why is the Power/USB at the top on these newer devices? makes docking a pain.
Why no TAB button? surely a really useful button to have on a qwerty.
and my last question/food for thought, not related to just this Phone, Why no Biometrics’ for security? surly with some for the intended use of NFC security will need beefing up.
either way as soon as it appears on Clove I’ll be ordering

yes i think he just tore studacris's.
[rant]isn't it somewhat ironic to rant about people utilizing technological advancements/tools in a smartphone forum?
I mean say for example studacris cellphone was plagued with poor reception...would he be just in griping or complaining about the devices deficiency? His rant would be akin to someone responding to that with "what..what you want good reception...haven't you ever heard of a landline?" Or pointing out the fact that cellphones and their contact storage and dial by contact/name have all but caused a large percentage of people to not even have their closest loves ones phone #'s memorized.[rant]
p.s. putting "rant" before and after my rant was tongue in cheek to highlight that apparently in addition to not knowing how to add 2+2 without a calculator people have lost the ability to utilize sarcasm and/or properly rant without specifically telling people that it is in fact a rant. =)~

Well damn.
This would make using the Tab 7.7 as a phone actually feasible.
I so want numerous devices in a personal network. If text messages could be 'pushed' to a different device over bluetooth, I would use the 7.7 as my primary 'hub' with all these devices connected to one another. The smaller device would be pocketable and only be to reply to messages when pulling out the tablet wouldn't prove to me useful. I've already got an MBW-150 for caller ID, media controls and notifications.
Dear god the possibilities.

Well damn.
This would make using the Tab 7.7 as a phone actually feasible.
I so want numerous devices in a personal network. You, must tell me how everything goes and if you feel it worth it.
When I first read that the 7.7 would be able to be used as a phone, I would have bought it right then and there. But of course, it wasn't available.
Have you used it as a phone for calling/texting yet?
And don't forget that g note have s pen....
And as man-bags become more socially acceptable, it makes more sense to have the big quad core device in your bag and your designer bluetooth handset in your hand. In fact if you could get a bluetooth handset with a small screen to show sms etc it would be really interesting. ....
Or Galaxy note wifi/bluetooth in your bag controlling your 10 inch tab in your bag...

I've had the 7.7 now for about 5 days, and ever since day 1, I have been totally blown away by how amazing this device is!
It has been my complete replacement for both phone and tablet. The Note was cool and all (I'm selling mine), but honestly, the s-pen was kinda wasted on me (not really the doodling type you see).
Also, as amazing as the Note's screen is for a really big phone, it's just not as functional as I would have hoped in order for it to be a capable substitute for a true tablet, in spite of its resolution. If you're on the go a lot, the ~7 - 8" screen size is about the perfect sweet spot for a truly light-weight heavy hitter in the tablet market IMO.
Now don't get me wrong! I love the Note too! The Note is a fantastic piece of hardware, and once it gets ICS, I bet it is going to be an absolute BEAST of a device. I'm sure that for a lot of people, the Note is/will be the absolute perfect fit for them, and a really good phone/tablet compromise.
For me, the 7.7 with a Bluetooth hands-free and my old SGS2 as a backup for when I'm occasionally "going light", is a better fit overall. For other's that might not be their ideal match. It just depends on the individual.
---------- Post added at 09:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:06 AM ----------
Now, here's an idea for next version of the Note:
So, the current generation is the N7000 yeah? So let's call the next iteration the "Note 8," yeah? See what I did there? Clever eh?
So imagine the device being pretty much identical to the GTab 7.7, but rather than include the s-pen in its current form, instead modify the HM-5000 to make it a little sleeker, have the s-pen on one end of it for writing, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the other end of it for earphones, add playback controls for music and media, and a small monochrome OLED display on the front of it for info like caller ID, date/time, and current playing track etc.
Holy crap that would be amazing!!
I can see the desire of wanting to carry around a 7.7 but I need to put my device in my pocket. My Note fits just perfectly in my front pocket. Been carrying it around like that since I got it. I know I could not do that with a 7.7. That's just me though. The Note is the perfect cross sized device for me. Will I still own a tablet. Most likely but I've found when my Note and my Ipad2 are sitting right next to each other I'll go for the Note even when I going to web surf. I just like the size.
Also having the earpiece is critical for me. I'll lose anything bluetooth I carry around. And I don't want to have to worry about where I'm placing two devices I can barely keep track of one.

That's what I love so much about Android. Unlike iStuff, it's not all one-size-fits-all. Our diversity allows for each of us to better find our perfect fit on an individual basis!

[Q] Disappointed in Android - thinking of going back to Windows Mobile

I have the Note II and I am not really happy. I knew Android had improved, but I was expecting much more polished. I am very excited about all of the capabilities this device brings. There are some really good Apps, the voice recognition is superior and can be used with email. IT syncs my contact categories - something MS abandoned.I could keep going.
I don't know if it is Android, or just Galaxy, but the UI is just not thought out. Even if I swapped for an S4, which I can still do, the whole system is not one handed friendly. Using the device in one hand is not though of at all it seems.
In this regard Windows Mobile is far superior. Where do I go, if I want to keep all of the capabilities of Android, but I don't want to give up the thoughtfulness of Windows Mobile?
Do any of the custom ROMs place things like the main tabs in the phone and contact screen on the bottom? Has anyone customized the browser so I don't have to reach the top to press into the address bar in order to type a URL? I have another week before the point of no return. Where should I start trying to really love the device?
For the browser, open settings go to Labs and click the quick controls opotions. Then all you have to do is touch the side of the screen and all your controls are right there. Also check out lmt launcher from here on xda. It makes 1 hand control really easy. Don't forget about the 1 have settings that shrink the dialer and a couple other things.
Also as an alternative you can grow bigger hands. I don't have a problem reaching anything.

Try out Windows 8 home launchers. You can find several of them in the Google Play Store. That should give you the one handed type of interface that you get from Windows 8 "smartphone" devices.
Galaxy Note 2, being 5.5" screen, is not a one handed device for all activities. Though for many quick information activities you can use one handed on Galaxy Note 2. Still not the best for one handed with some activities. But if you really want true one handed Android device then check out smaller Android devices.
The advantage of Android is choice of devices, sizes, and the ability to customize the device to the way that works for you.
Too many people get the wrong Android device for them and/or don't take the time to learn how to customize their Android device to work for them. Then they get disappointed with the wrong idea of Android from that limited experience and then turn to something else. Rather than trying a different Android device and/or learn how to customize the Android device to work for them.
Usually people would get the cheaper Android devices then get disappointed with it. At least you didn't do that.
But I am now seeing a growing number of people who get the phablet (large size that mixes smartphone with tablet) Android devices and get disappointed with not being able to use one hand to operate the device. Then they turn away from Android. But it is the device and not Android that is the cause of that problem. Smaller size Android device or learning to customize your device to work for you is much better option than running to a different OS device.
For you I say try out a Windows 8 home launcher first.
lol you really don't know jack about android capabilities. for some people, android can seem very complicated or they dont take the time to explore it. either take time and explore your phone or just go with windows. you cant really go wrong with either. everyone has their preferences
I agree with Nighthawk626's comments above. The complexity of Android is a pro and con, depending on the person. I love it, but my wife hates the complexity and size of her Galaxy S3. She had a Windows 7.5 phone before and prefers that user interface. She kept her GS3 because Android has more apps than Windows phone.
Thanks to JaguarXT. I didnt know Windows themed launcher existed that didnt need rooting. My wife should be happy.
android is different. It's meant for customization. You can tailor the phone to what you like. You should try installing a new launcher like Nova or Apex launcher. They offer customization that touchwiz (stock samsung doesn't offer). Also widgets, with a little time invested they can make your phone more convenient than any windows or apple phone. Zooperwidget, android pro widgets, and other programs like poweramp (music player) really make my phone what it is.
We aren't limited to opening apps by simple button icons. Some launchers allow you to setup gestures so instead of finding the button to press, you simply swipe your fingers a certain way and boom you're there. And there's also LMT launcher as someone mentioned earlier. You need root to use it but it's a great convenience. You can read up on it in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
This is what my setup looks like, not as simple as windows or iphone.. but I can already see many things on the desktop I wouldn't usually find on other OS's. It may be harder to setup, but it pays off making you're phone convenient to your liking.

sounds to me like you got a bigger phone than you can handle. i can use my note2 with one hand with Noooo problems. i can reach everything and type perfectly fine with one hand. you just might need a smaller phone so you can operate it correctly.
Ok i have small hands .. Now this has me scared . My note will be here Tuesday.. I love my note 10.1 . So i thought i should have a phone with similar capabilities. I am so tired of having to pack both devices ..
Please say it aint so.

My 4 year old daughter used my Note 2 with no issue. Single handed even.
yes i agree. I think most people who say its to big of a phone are trying to convince themselves Bigger is not always better when it comes to a phone.. But i think the note is at that point of no return.. Any bigger and i think it might be too big..
But the note 6 inch phone of the future If ??? we might be having the same debate wile all other phones are 5.5 inch and playing catch up..
Note 2 to me is bleeding edge technology with a Samsung twist. I cant wait to get mine two more days.. grrrr waiting sucks ..

XZP Camera distortion sadly also present with XZ1 Compact - fixed in 47.1.A.5.51

UPDATE: Sony has announced a fix in a future firmware update, release ETA is end of November. See post in thread with links
UPDATE 2: Firmware version 47.1.A.5.51 has the fix! Note that you'll have to manually enable distortion correction in the camera app settings, it's disabled by default for some unknown reason.
Just replaced my Z5C today with a brand new XZ1 Compact. It's a mixed bag for sure, with some improvements and some steps backwards (no FM radio, double tap to sleep/wake...), but the worst thing I feared is the same camera distortion issue first reported by XZP users, and unfortunately it's bad news.
The XZ1C main camera takes distorted pictures as well. Boo!!!!!

Have you taken the same picture with different settings to see if it gets any better and is the Album rendering time still an issue?
Really bad news as my z3c takes excellent pictures only problem with the camera i have is the stupid auto mode that i have to change every time when i started the camera, before i shoot a pic. Hope they disabled this presistent crap.

I do know that if you launch the camera from the lock screen (by holding down the physical shutter button), it defaults to Auto mode. If you launch the camera app manually after you've unlocked the phone, it defaults to your last used setting.
Yes, it's annoying. That said, I've read a review somewhere that claims the auto mode has improved a lot since then.

Yeah, the same distortion using the manual camera.
And yes, the Album still takes an awful long time to render a sharp image. I thought it would be solved with the newer chip and UFS storage, but I guess not.
I also wasn't able to find Photo Analyzer to disable in the system apps, which some say were causing delays in earlier models.
If it makes any difference, I've disabled Movie Creator.
Can you take a photo from a checkerboard grid from straight above to analyze how bad the distortion really is?
Thats no surprise. All imx400 sensor from Sony has this lense issue. There won't be a fix. Sony already told there is no problem. Take your money back or accept it. Good luck to us all lol
I've read several reviews and the distortion is not mentioned anywhere. It's this affecting all phones or is it just that some have the issue and others don't?
Probably all phones affected that fitted with the 19mp sensors i am working in the phone repair industry we had same years ago with htc m7 and m8 models but after a while htc declared a camera recall and we replaced them in warranty. Doubt it will happen with sony xz, xz1, xz1c too many units involved and cost to high. Finally we got another compact flagship that "faulty by design".

its mostly visible in close up photos and straight lines. Thats why you dont see it in reviews because they dont take photos of straight buildings all the time even thou you can see the distortion is the fotos from serveral reviews.

That's bad news.. Can't it be easily fixed with snapseed or the default photo editor?
Also, if you're kind enough, I would like to find out if we can FINALLY take raw photos with the XZ1 compact. Could you try with a 3rd party app and let us know?
That's the reason I left sony after Z3 compact, and I would love to return but this is holding me back

Re: RAW support: that's a big negative.
Besides, if they supported it, I'll bet they'd emphasize it their marketing.
Don't think the distortion is something that can be easily fixed post editing, the photo is already "damaged". Sony needs to fix the algorithm at the source.

I still using my older Z3C no camera issues no distorted pics, ok low light is different cake. But really if is that bad i rather keep my z3c instead of a again faulty flagship unit. Unfortunately nobody else manufacturing small form factor devices like the sony compact line with 4.6" display. Will see tomorrow might just getting a new or a second hand z5c after all.

As a previous owner of Z1C > Z3C > Z5C, I strongly advise against that idea. If your Z3C is functional, DO NOT exchange it for a Z5C, it's a worse phone overall due to the horrid Snapdragon 810 chip that plagues all flagship phones of that era.
You will lose the great battery life you're enjoying with the Z3C, and encounter slowdowns and lags all over the place due to the throttling. Even when throttled, the phone still gets crazy hot.
Not worth it.
Thanks for the info mhaha. Yes my z3c still works and looks prestine. Battery lasts 3 days on normal usage no facebook or other social media app installed also rooted with locked bl.

So how noticable/bad is this issue? If i'm primarily taking shots of the family will this be badly noticeable? Is it easily fixed in editors on the phone?
The specs of the XZ1 compact are perfect for me but the camera is a big issue if its truly bad. I'm due to go and upgrade tomorrow so need to know really or if its a case of try it and then return in the 14 days if its bad.
I will have mine today is already in store but i need to collect it. I will xheck it oob before i sign anything.
