Second edit: I thought I had found the answer but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I got the 5x with the Project Fi deal. I'm currently on Verizon and will probably stick with them but I have to give Project Fi a shot anyway. Is it possible to activate the Fi sim with my Verizon number without discontinuing my Verizon account?

If that is the only number with Verizon on that account then no. I moved to fi last month taking my VZ number with me. Had 2 numbers on VZ account, the moment I activated fi SIM card, my VZ number disappeared from my VZ account. For few days, it was showing suspended and then it was gone

Well dang. I figured that's probably how it'd work, though. It'll make it a little tough to really give Fi a try if I have to use a new number just to give it a whirl. Ah well.

You could bring your number back to VZ if you decide not to stay with fi. Call VZ and check. Also, ask fi support. But I believe you can take ur number with if you decided to leave fi.
Will it work on Sprint or should I wait to order til Sprint announces they will or will not carry?

Hi. I am a Product Ambassador for Sprint and can confirm that Sprint is an activation partner for Pixel. Let me know if you have any questions.

A bunch! Current Sprint user - phone payment for current phone will be up in Dec. So looking at options.
1) Will I have to buy the unlocked phone at Google, or does Sprint plan to carry it soon?
2) Project Fi - do I sign up with that through Sprint or through Google?
3) Does that create extra fees? This is what Fi states: $20 unlimited talk/text plan plus $10 per GB of data—so 3GB of data and your total bill would be $50 a month.
3a) So I guess, it might be easier for you to explain the exact process of what will be needed
4) Do I get to keep my current #?
Thanks,
- Peter

Hey Peter -
Happy to help.
1) Sprint will not carry Pixel due to Google's choice to go with Verizon as the exclusive carrier storefront for Pixel, however we are an activation partner for the device. So, you would buy the unlocked version of the device from Google and activate it with us if you choose.
You can get a SIM kit from us online here:
https://www.sprint.com/landings/bring-your-own-phone/
2) Project Fi is a Google MVNO service offer, we do not "sell it" though we are a network partner in Fi providing service on the backend along with T-Mobile. More info on the Fi site here:
https://fi.google.com/about/
3) There are no extra fees with Fi. You either get service from Sprint using a Sprint SIM or you get service from Fi using a Fi SIM. If you choose to activate with Sprint you would just use your existing Sprint number. If you choose to activate the service with Fi, you would get a new Fi number of your own unless you choose to port your line to Fi in which case you would no longer have that number with us on Sprint.
3a) Hopefully I have!
4) If you wanted to activate your Pixel with Fi, you could port your number over to that service. You would no longer be a subscriber when you port out.
Hope this has been helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Matt, Streamlining the process would sure be nice. Forty five minutes on the phone tonight, talked to 3 very nice reps. All to order a sim card. My wife wants the same phone when her lease is up. Why can't this be made less time consuming?

Well I wish I had a better answer. In this case, Google kept details around Pixel pretty close to the vest until the announcements yesterday which mean we could not communicate internally until late yesterday and today. The good news is that we have been working hard to make sure our Retail reps have internal information on Pixel to help with ordering SIMs as in your case. If you continue to still have a SIM issue, please let me know. The SIM card you will need for Pixel is:
UICC SKU / UPC Code
◦CZ2144LWC / 019962040146
•Retail SIM Kit Capable ◦760492034500

Hi hshshawn -
Yes it will as it is the exact same SIM SKU as Nexus 6: CZ2144LWC / 019962040146.
However we still require the SIM to be paired to the device MEID in our billing system so you can't just take the SIM out of your Nexus 6p, insert it into the Pixel and expect it to just activate. You still have to swap the device on sprint.com or through Care or Retail. Let me know if you have any more questions!

How about the Nexus 6? I have the Nexus 6 I got from sprint. Is this the same SKU?
A huge drawback in staying with sprint when I get the pixel is the lack of wifi calling support. I can go to T-Mobile and get unlimited, and have them support Androids native wifi calling.

Sprint supports Android native Wi-Fi calling. Are you 100% sure that T-Mo supports this on Pixel? It's a Google decision vs a Sprint decision on what they do and do not support in terms of carrier services.

The Project Fi SIM works on the Project Fi MVNO network. You will need a Sprint SIM card for Pixel to work on the Sprint network.
Correct SIM:
UICC SKU / UPC Code
◦CZ2144LWC / 019962040146
â?¢Retail SIM Kit Capable ◦760492034500
In terms of HTC 10, yes it will work as it is the exact same SIM SKU. I looked into this with our Product team and the Wi-Fi calling "support" that VZ and T-Mobile are claiming are most likely tied to voLTE than anything else. Ultimately Google does not support IMS on Pixel which would have enabled Android native Wi-Fi calling on our network.

Will it work with Project Fi?
I'm guessing it might, as long as you have an activated SIM (activated using an approved Fi phone).
I was under the assumption that project fi only works on Google branded phones. Has anyone activated a SIM card with a Google branded phone and then put it in a non Google branded phone and got the phone working on project fi? If so then that would mean any phone would work on project fi wouldn't it?

I have had very good luck with this. I activated in nexus 5x, moved to honor 8 which being gsm only, only had tmobile service and garble after every text message. To fix garble on gsm only use hangouts for texts and it works fine.
I have since used my sim in Moto Z and Droid Turbo, both verizon models, both showed project fi as the carrier (honor 8 showed tmobile) both still had garble after each text.
Also tried galaxy s7 edge sprint, same issue as verizon phones but said tmobile as the carrier.
Current phone is unlocked lg v20 (Us996) and everything works properly, no text garble and carrier shows up properly.
On all phones they could work as normal besides above mentioned issues, data speeds all worked etc.
Fun fact: fi sim also works in older samsung flip phones, I had one laying around, popped it in and it could do calls and texts fine.

Proud Project Fi user since Closed Beta !
Everything works on Project fi but picture text.
Anything have any ideas how to get the picture text to download?
Project Fi Compatability
Project Fi SIM cards that have been activated in a Google phone work just fine in this phone with one exception. No MMS messaging.
This is because Google requires the Project Fi app to be installed and working correctly on the phone first. If it's not - MMS messages are getting firewalled by Google. I guess this is their little trick to keep everyone from jumping on their service without buying one of their phones.
You used to be able to get around this by using Hangouts for SMS/MMS messaging but Google removed that ability from Hangouts in May.
Another work around is to use T-Mobile's MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc in place of the one used in Project Fi's APN. This allowed me to send MMS messages but I couldn't receive them. Instead of getting pictures, I was getting text messages of garbled code. I've also heard messaging anyone with an iPhone doesn't work in either direction.
I've been trying to figure this out for a while. I'm coming from a Pixel XL and I'd love to keep my service.
Couldn't you just download the Project Fi APK and then MMS would work?
It's been a while since I purchased an android phone.
If I want to continue using Project Fi initially but also be able to switch between carriers later, am I better off purchasing the Unlocked or the Project Fi phone? It's not clear if the project Fi phone is locked to the google network.

fi is the unlocked version of the phone but you usually get better incentives for buying through fi because you agree to use the service for soo long.. but no worry. as long as you use fi as one of the carriers you can dual sim also.

Google doesn't ha e thier own network... the project file bounces between TMobile Sprint and Verizon networks I believe.... So the phone has to be unlock to do that. The unlocked and fi version I believe are the same phone. But we will may e someone else can come firm whether the fi version will have the OEM unlocking ability.
Yes, Project Fi is a mobile virtual network. I've been on it since the beginning invitation period. I'm still rolling a Nexus 6 so it's been a while since I shopped a google phone and was surprised to see 3 different phone options: Unlocked (works on all major carriers), VZ (includes sim), and Project Fi.
I requested a Project Fi phone support callback but no response after almost 2 hours now. I suspect they are swamped with new product sales and are putting low priority on questions.

It's the same unlocked phone, and same price for fi or unlocked purchase.
I don't see any difference in price between buying unlocked or Fi phones. They are both unlocked. Just setup Fi on your eSIM, and then you can add a second carrier without any changes.
Edit: I looked again, there is a discount if you buy two Pixel3's and sign up a new user:
Get $799 Fi credit when you buy two and add a new Fi user to your plan. Terms apply
I've had Fi for Wife, kid, and me for over a year. Last months bill was $59.43 for three devices.
I have fi on my eSIM, and have a Verizon SIM that I use as my primary network. 99% of the time I'm on Verizon, but when I need it I use FiSwitch app "COOL APP! by an XDA developer" to swap sims. It's a one button press to switch from SIM to eSIM, takes about 10 seconds to switch. Normally my unused gig of data is used by the Kid and Wife.
I bought a Pixel3 "not Pink" for wifey, and a Pixel3 128 XL black for me. The Kid will get Wife's old Pixel, and Grandpa will get my old Pixel2 XL. I will put Pops on my Fi account and save him a boat load of money from the evil AT&T elder abusing up-sellers.
It has become apparent to a few of us who purchased G Power phones from Google Fi that their claim it is unlocked is not true. If you have them port your number over to a MVNO, such as I did, to Boom Mobile, (Verizon ), that sim card will only get you 2G, 1xRTT, with no data. There is a thread on Reddit , and Motorola forum. And, the claims are it would be difficult to rid the phone of the Fi rom and replace it with one that will truly unlock the phone.
This forum will not let me post those links now. However, users of this phone from Fi have tried everything but rooting, which of course, voids the warranty. And, the consensus is, it is installed firmware. Most bought these from Fi at a attractive price of $149, for a claimed, "unlocked", phone. $100 less then from Best Buy etc.
And, probable not that many complaints yet, as most stick with Fi.
Multiple emails to Google Fi, get you nowhere, as they will not admit to the problem.
As I, and others no little about rooting., we are looking for a simple answer to get Google Fi's rom off the phone, without a lot of hassle.
Any help would be appreciated. We all have tried; Factory, Network Reset etc. nothing so far works. If we had purchased the phone from another retail store unlocked this would not happen.
As you may know, Google Fi uses T-Mobile/Sprint/ Us Cellular networks on this phone, and their service is generally good. However, where I live and travel, Verizon just works more of the time. I put Boom Mobile's, (Verizon), sim card into my older, unlocked Moto G6, bought from Best Buy, which was on Google Fi for some time, and it works, 4G,without doing anything.
Thank you for any help.
I might have mis-spoke about a Moto G Power unlocked from non-network retail, it may have same problem, no conformation on this yet.
So I did the same as you. I purchase from Google FI. But I place my at&t sim on this phone and everything is working fine. Download speeds around 33 to 28mbps. Only thing I noticed is my calls are not Cristal clear. Other than that I had no issues so far
@PesSarmiento Thanks for that Info! It has been pretty consistently reported on various forums that the problem lies in trying to use the Google Fi sourced Moto G Power on the Verizon network. I have personally wondered what would happen if I inserted an AT&T SIM card, so that's good to know. It seems that Google promotes the G Power as an "unlocked" phone, only to find that is not so.

I think I am going to guess that something else is going on here. If it wasn't unlocked, I don't think you would get any service at all, not just 2G, 1xRTT.
Has anyone tried a factory reset with the different provider sim in the device?
I am using mine on FI and don't currently have another sim to test.

Yes, many of us have done numerous factory resets. And yes, we've tried other sim cards, on a VZW MVNO in my case. Nothing works. I read of one person inserting an AT&T sim card and that did work for him.

That actually sounds a bit more reasonable, thanks for sharing that.
The bit of testing on Fi for me appears to show that the phone switches to H or 3g for calls when connected to T-Mobile. Sprint acts like sprint and switches to 1x for phone calls.
But it has a hard time staying connected to T-mobile compared to Pixel devices I used in the past.
I hope they fix it soon.
So I recently got my visible sim card, and like you mentioned I have no service on Moto G Power. The sim card is working fine in a Galaxy note 9. Let me know if you got some fix to this problem. I will really appreciate if you can send me a PM with those links from the other forums

isn't visible on Verizon? So you can't just switch a sim from one device to another like GSM.
Edit: This solution worked from a user u/yagyaxt1068 on Reddit.

You'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash the Verizon ROM. The Retail/RETUS ROM doesn't solve the issue.
Meanwhile 6+ months later... They must have fixed the problem.
I just bought a 'used' Moto G Power (XT2041-4) off of eBay a few weeks ago. Two months old.
Private Seller. He made sure that the device was wiped properly so I didn't have to deal with FRP issues.
Android 10, Google Fi software channel.
I installed my SIM from Mint Mobile and was off to the races. I haven't had any connection issues (that I know of.)
I'm still learning my way around the device...
Seems last update did something, my G power now works with Boost Mobile sim? software channel still, Google Fi. Bought another G power from Best Buy, channel is, US retail. Both work fine Verizon LTE. Now always carry two identical phones, for safety backup. Waiting for Android 11 update to see if the channel changes on Fi phone?
Try disabling Google Fi app before trying on any other sim card. I'm using G power(bought from google) with ultra-mobile. Everything is working as expected.
Most likely because Ultra Mobile is using T- Mobile. Same as Fi.
Does the Software Channel in "about phone" page still show Google Fi or US retail?
I disabled the Fi app and still could not use Verizon MVNO before last update.
Did any of you guys set up the ****ing APN at all or what? If you have nothing except for basic "2G" its because you need the APN and the moment it's in there it will take a tenth of a second for it to pop up and that's it
Tried that' first phone from Google has "Google FI" as APN. and prefs are grayed out can't change it. Second Moto G from Best Buy has "VZWINTERNET". Found by; Settings, Network & internet, Mobile network, Advanced, Access Point Names. Seems Phone from Google the APN will stay the same if inserting a verizon sim card? Unlocked changes.
