Is it possible the reason the motor sounds terrible is because of what Zach suggests from Jerryrig Everything,' that the motor is being pushed too hard because it is so small'
My thoughts:
Keyboard: Gboard: The haptic feedback isn't at it's worst but it's pretty erratic and has the notorious sandy rattling sound; it's subtle though
When being called or when vibration is applied for longer times: The vibrate motor is really really bad. It's erratic in frequency. Really erratic!
How can this be? That it behaves better with Gboard but not when activating from general touches and call notifications.
Is it possible to simply lower the voltage applied to the motor inside the OS itself?
Also note when the phone is on carpet the sound produced from the motor is damped and actually sounds like that soft fuzzy buzz we are all familiar with.
I can actually pinch my phone over the location of the motor and reduce the sound of the rattling motor.
Is it possible that the motor itself is simply "loose" or not secure enough for the amount that it is being pushed?
If it's going to be driven so hard can it be secured better?
Changing the TIME the motor is active for does not change it's frequency. Is there a way to change that, the actually frequency which would surely have to be done by change how much voltage is applied to the motor? OR I am not sure how Android handles these things...can we change the shape of the frequency; Sine, Square, Saw, etc. etc.
Seems I am a little late to the party but hearing MKBHD's initial review (quite some time ago) I just couldn't by this phone for +$700.00 Now that I have it in hand though I'd like to talk about it some. Specifically this issue.
I saw during a tear down video for our Razer phone that they commented that the motor is just too tiny. In my head I was thinking that it still doesn't make sense with the rattle noise. To me it sounds loose like you said. So with root, I was hoping that I could control the vibration strength like I could with the OnePlus I once owned and controlled through kernel adiutor under "misc". However it makes no difference at all.

Wow really!? I'm fairly surprised. Because it does so well at other times and then did exactly just as horrendous at others. That's why I don't understand why it is good at some points but bad at others.
That's pretty interesting. So, your Razer still had the erratic vibrating too? What were you able to control, and change?
I'm really surprised it had no effect unless it literally is just loose. Which I'm not quite brave enough to do that.
But yeah what did you find? Got a link?

Here's the YouTube video where they tear down the Razer Phone and talk about the tiny vibrator motor within the handset:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUVG7_uDWSg&t=6s
For the Kernel Aduitor program you can find that here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=en_US
Basically under "Misc" there is a setting for the vibrator strength but changing it from 0 to 100 makes no difference it still is full force and rattles. Sad. Such a beautiful phone and such a horrible vibrator motor. I honestly want to just turn it off it possible.
What was cool is that the heat pipe used in the Razer is truly a nice big one. As Jerry put it in the video "This might be the biggest heat pipe I've ever seen in a cell phone".

Hi everyone,
As some of you are aware, the vibration motor on the GN is so weak that it is literally impossible to feel it when it's in your pocket. I've searched everywhere for an App that increases the intensity but it has all been in vein. I've heard from multiple places that this is not possible, but it seems that some Android phones do have controls like this (DROID charge comes to mind).
Is it possible to somehow increase the voltage supplied to the vibration motor? Perhaps in a custom Rom? Or maybe even through a hardware voltmod?
Although I have no issue with the vibration motor in my GN(pretty strong to me), other phones I have used have had a weak vib. CM's roms have the ability to increase the vib motor.

So, when you receive a call while the phone is in your pocket, you can still feel it vibrate? I've found that it feels strong in my hands but that the fabric in my pocket absorbs it so I can't feel it against my leg. I can't even feel it in my pajama pants, which have very thin fabric.
When you say CM, you mean CyanogenMod? Based on my reading it does not look like it does what I am asking. If you have a phone with CM on it, can you show me a screenshot of those vibrate settings?
yes, I feel it in my pocket when i get calls. Yes, I meant CyanogenMod, It is possible the setting I was thinking of just dealt with the haptic feed back when touching keys. It has been awhile since I've used a CM rom. Sorry
hi all
is there any way how to get GN automaticaly vibrate when pocket, using proximity sensor, like it was on some Samsung or HTCs?
Thanks lads
Majjjjo
That was done by accelerometer, not proximity sensor. Proximity sensor shuts off when the screen sleeps. That said, it would be a nice mod.
In my particular case, the camera is the culprit. It seems that the black piece inside the metal square chassis rattles when you tap it. When the vibration motor is active, it rattles the camera inside. Just sharing since it seems this issue has popped up a couple times.
Only solution I can think is to take out the black camera piece from the chassis and maybe stuff it a little tighter or order a new replacement, but the camera could be made that way. I'll take it apart again later today to see if there is some space for small paper or something to keep it still.
I've been getting this rattle for awhile now and was wondering what it was. Between the touch screen and bootloop, this is the third strike.
I also have a sound from the sound vibration motor, but its not so much a rattle sound, more of a beeping/squealing sound. Is this normal? Its not very loud but it annoys me when typing in a quiet room. Remember I had the exact same sound on my last LG phone so maybe its an engineering thing or the brand of vibration motor.

I noticed this on the forums too. I listened for this but couldn't find it. If I put my ear really close to the motor I heard a small whine, but it seemed like it was something else rather than the motor because it was constant. I will say the rattle could sound higher pitched to others depending on movement. My sound is a small rattle but I could see how maybe it could vary to a squeaking or squealing noise to some.

This is how mine sounds, mic is right next to the phone so its louder than during normal use. You have this to?

The camera has Optical Image Stabilization. Packing the gaps will stop this working. The rattling is just the camera moving around.

Did you listen to the sound in my video? You have that to? Its mostly when using haptic feedback on home and back buttons and the third button down at the bottom
I have just received my HTC 10 (great phone overall) and vibration is really strong. Not ideal but not a massive problem, however haptic feedback is really annoying. You actually hear a metallic sound when you touch the fingerprint reader/home button or when typing in the keyboard, like a mild xylophone or something similar. And if the phone is sitting on a table it's very noticeable. Again it's not a typical vibration sound, it's more of a metallic thing. I was even wondering if the sound came from the speakers lol
Is this affecting other people? I wonder if if's just my handset.

Very interesting.
I always use power saver and don't prefer vibrate anyway but just checked it out and the noise is very odd.

which is why i hate haptic feedbacks or vibrate
My Verizon variant does this as well. I describe it as kind of a hollow, metallic sound. I figured it was just due to the placement of the "vibrator(?)" within the metal frame.
I have just sent this unit back for replacement, let's see if the noise on the new one is any different.
I just read there are kernels which let you reduce the intensity of vibration (not just the duration like some keyboard apps do), this might be a workaround but you need a rooted device. If anyone gets to try this please share your results.
Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the OnePlus 3T, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the OnePlus 3T is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Surprisingly I don't see a category for DAC or headphone output. I'm going to comment on that here. The audio output is amazing, using my old galaxy in my car through the auxiliary cable there was a lot of noise. So much so that one could hear it right through the music. Now this kind of use is probably the most telling one out there since the cable connection is likely high resistance. Not only is it cleaner but it is noticeably louder. If you take the audio output seriously, this is a great phone for you.
By far one of the best Android devices out there. Spot on.
Running stock rom with kernal "see below" using root, V4A. Battery life is absolutely spot on, 5 hours screen on time with 48% battery left.
How is the screen response on your phones?
Are you guys noticing screen latency lag or is it fast like iPhone, Pixel or s7?

I find the headphones output volume to be lower than my Galaxy S4 was. Really wish it could go louder.

Nexus Reborn
Love this phone! Battery life is great even if it wasnt Dash Charge is extremely useful. Best phone I've owned
Great phone, great performance, great build let down by its low res display and camera.
Phone has a lot of good stuff built in, but i also wish for a more open and flexible design when it comes to OOS, i dont understand why they dont give us an option to Change the Notification Slider to "Sound On - Vibration Mode - Sound and Vibration Off" would make much more sense in my eyes, also dont understand why we dont have more accent colors to go with, its very limiting.
Also a Noise Suppression disable Option would be pretty awesome as a lot of ppl are complaining about Bad Sound in VoIP Calls and Recording.
But in the end i would give it a 98/100 as everything else is Awesome!
Great phone! Got it with MM and a day later the N update came in. I thought it was fast but after a factory reset it is even faster. And by that I don't mean Benchmarks but real world. You almost won't see apps installing after they are downloaded from Play Store. It's virtually instant. Used CM 13 on an LG G2 before which also was great. The features I miss most on OOS is scheduled DnD and System profiles from CM. Therefor I'm waiting for the Nougat kernel to be released and LineageOS for the OP3T becoming more stable.
Good experience overall
I mostly love this phone. Battery, speed, and display are all great. My only two complaints:
The vibrator is terrible. It manages to be both really loud and really weak at the same time. I ended up buying a smartwatch just so I wouldn't miss notifications all the time.
The slight curve in the screen glass makes it almost impossible to have a good screen protector. To my knowledge, there's still none that offer both full coverage and impact protection without obscuring part of the screen or letting dust underneath them.
If camera gets improved will change to 5 ?
I couldn't agree more about this phone. I've had HTC M9, and the Note5. I personally feel that this phone blows them out of the water. My favorite thing about this phone is the battery and DASH charging. I feel that OnePlus DASH charge is the true meaning of fast charge. Samsung and others should take notes..

I'm sure you've seem this case before, but I am currently using it and love it! Good protection for the price including a built in screen protector this still allows you to still utilize all screen real estate.

Yeah, I've seen it, but it isn't sealed so it will let dust under the screen, and I imagine it's not as good impact protection as a TGSP would be.

I don't know what all the fuss was about, at no point have I ever felt like there was screen latency. I feel like you have to be looking for it, or using something which is intensive enough to make you notice. Either way on a daily normal use of the phone at no point, coming from a Note 4, did I ever feel like this thing was slow at ANYTHING.
your milage may vary.

I really recommend this device. Works awesome!
First let me say that I haven't dropped my phone ,except couch to rug. This morning I was trying to rotate the display and I noticed a clicking sound in the camera area. Now when I shake it it sounds like a kids rattle. As far as I can tell the camera still works - zoom, focus, all modes. But it's really troubling that a new phone has something come loose. And more concerned that it's going to continue breaking down. NOT happy at all!
Have you never heard your camera lenses move about your phone before?
When not in use, the lenses don't have a magnetic field keeping them in position and move around freely within the module obviously. All phones do this.
There have been multiple posts in multiple threads in this section. It's normal having to do with the telescoping camera. I believe it's reported that the iPhone is like this too.
I'll add that I haven't noticed anything from mine, and I have really sensitive hearing. I've also had mine in an OtterBox Defender case from day one, so I don't know if that muffles the sound.

That's the OIS. Every OIS rattles.
The bigger the sensor/OIS, the louder the rattle.
Meaning almost every modern phone has this rattle. Just try it out with your old phone, shake it whilst holding it next to your ear: You will hear the rattle.
The P6 Pros rattle is - loudness wise (vs other periscope phones) - slightly above average, but that's not concerning.
Samsung has a support page about this:
Do you hear a small noise from inside of the device when shaking your Galaxy phone?
FAQ for Samsung mobile devices. Find more about Do you hear a small noise from inside of the device when shaking your Galaxy phone? with Samsung Support
www.samsung.com
You can manually test this, by going into your camera and making sure that the tele lens is activated (zoom greater than 4/5) - if you shake it then, the sound will be massively reduced, simply because the OIS has kicked in. In it's "idle" state it creates the rattle.
Thanks all. Weird that I didn't notice it until today. I am a little less concerned now. I'll check the wife's 4a5G when she gets home. My LG G7 didn't have this rattle.
Also sorry about the dup post - didn't see the others, and I check at least once a week, but I hate this app. I had an (unofficial) app a few phones back that mimicked the website well - this one is a mess!

Yeah. I still use the new app occasionally but I do most of my XDA browsing (and especially searching) on the computer and a little in the Android Chrome app. The new forum software definitely has some nice things about it (although I can only think of one or two on the spot). I know they absolutely had to change forum software to make things easier in the background. I'm guessing that the new forum software came with a sample template app and either it's just not possible to implement things as nicely as in the old app, or they haven't been able to dedicate the time and effort to it.
Ah! Found a good search to find other posts about it, not that it matters now and it's probably not all-inclusive. Keyword: rattle.
Personally, whenever I hear about folks actually trying to reproduce the sound on any phone, I get nervous they are going to break their phones.

I don't want to cause any panic here, but it is definitely possible to break the OIS with prolonged, excessive shaking/vibration. It's a moving part that can only take so much. In a normal everyday-usecase, that will probably never happen, but there are a couple reports of people who use their phone on their motorcycle (various manufacturers/different phones) that have a broken OIS. Of course some people never tell the true story, maybe they thundered over a pothole with 200 km/h and that caused the OIS to fail, but in the end the reports remain and there is not much anyone can do about it.
I can vouch for what everyone is saying here. I just got my P6P today and it rattles if i shake it by my ear. Definitely dont constantly try to shake it and make it rattle, thats definitely adding wear and tear, although not much, but too much can cause problems.
