[Q] Rooted Motherboard Issues?

Knowing that this is my last resort and with all the wonderful knowledge here on the forums, I'm hoping I might get some creative ideas.
I recently bought a Tab S 8.4, rooted it about 2 weeks after I got it. No problems, everything is working great. Last week, the screen starts to flicker and the tablet reboots randomly. When it does this, the battery goes from 100% down to 12%. Eventually this happens enough where the tablet won't stay on for longer than a minute. Read around the forums and find others mention the exact same issue. Potentially a battery pull/re-plug may alleviate. Tried that to no avail.
I have found that if I hold the battery plug in place *real* tight, by pushing down with my finger, the tablet operates somewhat normally. Could be a motherboard issue.
Anyone run into this at all? Thoughts? Ideas? Replacement parts? I've got a $500 brick on my hands now with no warranty to boot. :crying:

I soldered my battery straight to the board. But before doing that, try spraying some contact cleaner (found in hardware stores) and see if it Will work

So they took off the back cover and soldered it back in for you for free with no warranty? I'm a bit surprised they would do that. I'll have to see if I have one in my area.

I found a local electronic repair shop that said they could re-solder it for me relatively easily. Brought it in and he said it did look like the terminals on the battery plug had been pulled back a little bit and weren't soldered on there very good (good to hear some type of confirmation on that and he let me view it through a microscope as well). Twenty minutes and twenty dollars later, my tablet is working as it did previously. I've used it sparingly over the last 2 hours, so nothing definitive yet, but the fact that it doesn't restart right away makes me think the issue is resolved.

Glad to hear you got it working bro.. seems.like a samsung quality or even design issue, they got plenty of space yet decided to use a very small terminal

Battery Results
Just wanted to follow up with everyone that might be experiencing similar issues. After fixing the issue, and de-bloating a bit, my battery life is phenomenal. Much better than when I first got it. I suspect the battery issue was causing some drain as well, even when it wasn't restarting. The attached screen is still with 35% battery left.

Thanks to all those who contributed to this thread. I too was having battery issues. I'd get random restarts, disconnects from the cellular network, forgetting wifi passwords, battery that would go from 50% to dead in three seconds., display glitches etc. I finally opened up my tab which I thought was going to be a pain but was actually pretty easy. By naked eye the solder joints looked fine but under a microscope I could see that all six solder joints on the battery connector were cracked and by pressing on the connector could see the connector move independently from the PCB. Resoldered the joints and everything is good now.

Well my problem is that the battery isn't charging, I get a battery with a red "X" mark when the screen is on but when it is turned off, its charging well but very slow and when it reaches 99% it never goes to 100%. Could it be possible I have the same problem as you guys? no random restarts for me just the issue of sucky battery life (3 hours on wifi) and not charging

Which bloat apps did you exactly remove?

Are you using the stock Samsung charger? Just plug it into the wall and it should be fine. Don't charge from the computer or use a different charger

Got that same problem. My tab will only charge up to 60% under 6 hours. Batterystatus app shows that my 2amp wall charger is just charging at 300mah +/- . Tried my power bank, same issue. Changed the cable and the reading from the wall charger is 1800mAh , could top up the battery in 2hrs

I have experienced this. Flickering of the screen which eventually leads to reboots. Got it fixed at a samsung service center. You rooted it but you're on stock ROM right? I think there's a problem when we root it and stick with the stock ROM. When I rooted my tab again, certain apps started FCing which lead to lags. So I'm gonna wipe this and start from scratch.

I dropped by tablet battery down once and now every so often the screen flickers with vertical lines and this is followed by loss of network and the thing reboots.
I've read this to be a battery problem.
Warranty is still active but I've rooted it and my Knox counter has gone up.
What do you think XDA? Just get a replacement battery?

If you have the ability, since it was dropped, I would open it and make sure connection is tight to battery and screen. Then if it still acts up, get a battery. Several people had battery issues out of the box. All it turned out to be for a few was a loose connection.

i was thinking about that but i'm afraid of voiding warranty. do i even still have warranty? due to the knox?

Well ive opened it up and tightened everything i can see and it seems to work ok for a while, when the charge gets to around 20-30%, the tablet flickers, all mobile connections are lost and 75% of the time, reboots.
So i went ahead and got a new battery. Now this was worse kinda. At random moments, like unlocking the screen, or replying to a message, or maybe just a high cpu load event, the tablet just turns off and is unable to be powered back on without first connecting it to a power supply like a wall charger or a power bank.
The time and date will be reset once its back on and ill have to wait a few minutes before the auto network time setting kicks in before i can use something like whatsapp.
Anyone got any clue what might be causing this problem? Thanks in advance, helpful xdarians.

I'm not by any means an expert or repairman of any kind, just so you know. I'm thinking maybe a loose connection at the terminals on the board the battery connects to or if they use a separate board for the battery to connect to and then to the main board it may be somewhere along in there. Maybe a loose wire going into the tab that connects to the prongs. It sure sounds like something isn't making a good connection. Sounds like a load gets put on it and it and that bad connection can't handle the load.
Might just be you're going to have to send it off...

You may be right. Sounds like a particular connection which does higher load or something. Once i put the tablet in power save mode, the symptoms never reappeared. I dont notice a drastic slowdown in the tablet either. Probably am prolonging the inevitable.

I am facing exactly same issue what you have described and am in same situation, have tripped Knox on my Tab S 8.4.
I can see that you have been able to suppress the behavior by putting it to Power Saving mode. Have you experienced flicker and reboot since then? I am planning to take it to Samsung store not sure if they will honor warranty, did you tried that?

nope, ever since the Power Saving mode solution, it hasnt flickered and rebooted yet. and my warranty was expired by that point so i didnt bring it to the shop. no noticable reduction in performance so far

I have seen this problems on 2 tablets 10.5 and 8.4 the connector where battery is connected on motherboard gets loose which causes reboots and flicker
Solution in my case was resoldering that connector again

i had the same problem, opened up my tablet, just disconnected the battery, cleaned the contacts, pushed it back, made sure its nice and snug, put it all back together and now battery doesn't drain as fast, no more flickers and reboots!

hmm. i'll have to give it a try. you think this may be something to do with condensation?

Sorry for the bump, but I'm having this issue as well on my S 8.4. Custom ROM. The thing with me is that it's not consistent. One day, it will do it a few times; others, no issues whatsoever. I'll try the suggested if it gets progressively worse.

Unfortunately our home's tablet (Tab s 8.4 Wifi) has the same problem.
It never did weird whatshowever, but when I flashed a custom rom (which went perfectly smooth actually) the screen flashes and the tablet reboots sometimes.
Now it weird that this never happened before and only when I flashed a custom rom it began showing this behaviour.
I am affraid of opening this tablet, and I guess because of the custom rom there is no warranty left anymore (or can this be bypassed by some terminal trick?)
Also I question myself if this is not a software issue, and that it can be fixed with software or so?

I might have some surprising news to tell about this "issue".
I saw some unboxing video's and saw at what place the battery connector was placed. It was some sort of a 'push to click' system.
So what I did was the following:
I pushed the tablet at the place of the battery connector. I tried this at various places until I heard a *click*.
Now I don't have this issue anymore. Jay!

I started to have the same issue on a Tab Pro 12.2, presumably after the battery has lost considerable amount of its energy. Normally I remember this tablet to have a dazzling 10+ hours of usage time. Just after some serious usage time of more than 2 years this issue started, along with increasing temperature and finally reboot. From time to time Android gave a warning message about overheating. From time to time charge values drop big values at a time. From 45 to 20 or 80 to 50. Seems arbitrary. This was happening even when I was on stock, then I switched to some Android 6 stock port from some other tablet. Still the same.
I believe the battery needs replacement. (That's obvious after 18 months, I just mean blinking is related to this) Hope I can find a high quality one cause there are several garbage batteries.

Tab heating up and battery drain

I took over a tab 8.0 Lte from my dad but there seems to be a big problem with it. The tab keeps heating up even in idle and battery drain is fast and constant. From full to 0, the graph is a constant downslope going flat in about 3hrs. This happens even after I hard resetted it. I open up the back and found the part that is heating up. I am starting to think that the motherboard is damaged rather than the battery need a change. The metal part is HOT. I cant touch it for more than 2 sec. Even in idle.
I attached the part in the pic, hopefully someone can help me to identify the problem. Thanks lots in advance!!

It seems you open the rear cover the wrong way as it still have the frame cover around the back. It should open from the front.
You don't tell exactly model , I'm not sure what it is but most of this problem is from cracked battery connector. Re solder the black battery connector will fix it.
This is the proper way to open the rear, do like you did will damage the rear cover, it won't snap back as some plastic locking tabs are broken.

Trust me it looks fine with bare eyes but not under microscope. Re solder the battery connector will fix the quick discharge, overheating. It takes only under 5 minutes to get it done, this problem is common in Samsung tablets.

Okie.... I give it a try. My last soldering experience was like 15yrs ago....

I just opened up the tab again and have a look at the connector.. It's so freaking tiny! How on earth is someone able to do it?..? I think if I were to do it, I would solder at least 3 pins together in one shot.......

You need magnified glass and small tip iron to do the rework,
Otherwise you will short it

Heating Up whne trying to charge - not charging anymore

First of all thanks to everyone. I hope it is not a repeat query. I have searched quite a bit here and of course with my friend Google but not coming up with much. Here is my issue:
My wife's Nexus 5x is about 1 year old or so. Stock, not rooted just plain old. About a week ago, she stated that phone is heating up (not warming) when plugged in to charge. I plugged that to a another charger of Nexus 5x (I have 3 of these phones in my house hold). Same effect - it is really heating up in the back near the finger print sensor. Red charging light keeps flashing but nothing more. I even could not turn it on. I tried to boot into safe mode to no avail - can not. I opened up the whole thing to see any internal damage or may be moisture or shock - but no evidence of that either. - reseated all cables - pack it back. Still when I plugin, I do see the red flashing light and in about 2 minutes or so I can feel that it is heating up in the back and if I leave it on charger long enough (5 minutes or so) heat can be felt on the screen. In any case, I am out of warranty - LG had replaced it for boot loop issue about a year ago. :crying:
So that is my sob story. In my little opinion, this may be a hardware issue and also, this may not be a boot loop issue. I am thinking to buy a used one and replace the mobo - may be?
Any hope for this puppy? Your time, advice, kind words, directions, guidance all are very appreciated.

Thanks for the response. No, I didn't give much thought about the short-circuit in the battery itself because when I had back cover out and plugged in, battery was not heating up - it was mostly around the finger print scanner. but now, when you mention it, I should have. Let me think about swapping the battery from mine and see ...

SM-T800 display issue after charging

Hello everybody
it happens suddenly, for no reason, on a resurrection remix rom which worked fine for years: after a charge, my display started working erratically (working/not working, twinkle?randomly... i don't know the exact english term).
Just in case, i changed of rom and switched to the official lineage rom here:

i followed all the procedure but nothing changed after that, my display acting still erratically.
When i boot, i have the "kernel is not seandroid enforcing" message on top/left before booting into the lineage rom, i don't know what does it mean and if it could be related to my display issue. i don't remember if it was there when i had the previews rom though....
Could it be a kernel issue?

but my problem seems different, since i have display issue (randomly!) even where i am start booting (when we see the samsung logo for exemple).

i am open to any suggestion, a link, an assistance in that matter would be greatly appreciated!

The number 1 reason for flickering display on the S1 is loose battery connection, this affects the T7** a lot more than the T8** make sure the connector is soldered firmly to the motherboard and the plug half has a tight fit on all the pins, some solder the battery directly to the motherboard to fix the problem.

Somehow, i don't think it is, in my case, a connector problem as i tried electronic contact spray and the connector seems pretty sturdy too.
i think it is, when i touch the screen that the flickering display begins the most and i hear a dim sound each time the screen flickers.... i am beginning to think it is a screen defect after all....:/

See if you can find a full teardown of an T800 on youtube, see if there is an connector for the display and check if it loose, have you dropped or bumped your T800, do you game on it, lots of hits to the screen could have caused a fault.
It`s a shame i love my T800, Maybe sell it on ebay as faulty and get the new S4 when it released it`s supposed to have and 16:9/10 display.

yes i gamed on it, but i play "gently", adventure, hack & slash RPG game...
No, i haven't dropped it and it is in a otterbox defender rugged case!
it happend just after charging it, for no reason...
Yes i love my T800 too, i bought at a very cool price a Z4 tablet, but bootloader is locked on this one(some kind of stupid lotery, imho)((
I just purchased the tab s3 at a cool price, i didn't know the tab s4 would be 16:9/10 but for gaming, 4:3 isn't a problem:/
