This app popped up on Engadget in September & instantly captured my attention.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/iphone-awareness-app-selectively-filters-outside-noises-into-yo/
What it does is it uses your phone's mic to allow sounds above a certain threshold through to your headphones when you're blasting your music. This would be incredibly helpful for my work, where I sometimes blast my music & don't notice when people are knocking on my cube.
Anyway, the people who developed this app said that they'd release an Android version, but they haven't released any updates since its release. Does anyone know of a similar app in the market? I've searched many times & come away empty.
Anyone interested in developing a similar app?
Thanks!

I've tried that app, but to be honest with you, I have no idea what that is or does. It seems like it's a simple volume profile program a la AudioManager.
What I'm looking for is an app that will feed outside sounds into my headphones. Thanks!
I am interested on this, and found this thread while searching.
I've just posted a question about the feasibility of this on a Galaxy S audio dev thread.
I also emailed Essency, makers of Awareness, to ask about their Android progress.
If it can be done, and Essency don't do it, I will give it a go.
Audio capabilities on Android have been behind iPhone dramatically until 2.3 where things got better.
I doubt it will be possible to have direct monitoring of the mic working across all phones, but it should be possible to do it in the digital domain, but there may be latency compared to the iPhone version.
Update:
Example of feeding the input buffer to the playback buffer:

Android Awareness!
Hi Guys,
thanks for the interest in Awareness, I just want to confirm an Android version is currently in production.
I apologise for the delay, we originally intended to release an Android version last year but our developers advised at the time that it just wasn't possible to come up with one version that was compatible with all handsets.
There are 2 reasons why there is nothing comparable on the market at the moment, firstly, as easy as the concept sounds, its not that easy to implement on any handset (iOS or Android), there are quite a few technical challenges to overcome that elongate development and seriously challenges its viability from a commercial standpoint. We could have had different 9 apps in the time it took to develop Awareness...
Secondly, we applied for a worldwide patent on Awareness nearly 2 years ago to protect the significant investment and hard work that's gone into making it a reality.
So please be patient a little longer, its been a long haul for all of us but I promise you will not be disappointed with the results.
In the meantime if any of you have any suggestions or tips regarding Android, don't hesitate to get in touch, they'd be much appreciated.
Alex

We need bluetooth 4.0 to be activated...too many products are becoming available that use this and we are not able to. Its not just us galaxy nexus ownners either..its even the new nexus and galaxy notes. Pass this along so we can get as many people to make this a priority for google to fix!

Too bad. Google never gonna do it, good luck finding devs that will, it's not worth the frustration.

If Google wanted BT 4 on the phone they would have released it with it. They aren't found going to this for a phone they'll be dropping support for soon anyway.

Why? I mean honestly...why? What devices out there truly support the full advantages of Bluetooth 4.0 (meaning BLE) that you would actually use on your phone? Name us 5 actual, reasonable, affordable, and available devices that would interest the community which support BT4.0+BLE. Because I would love to know. (and no offense but heart monitors don't count)
To my understanding BT4.0 only brings BLE if the chip used supports BLE. This is an optional feature; not just automatically included. Remember...there is a difference between a device having Bluetooth 4.0 and having Bluetooth 4.0 BLE. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
I've read a couple different articles and posts going back and forth on whether or not the chip inside the Galaxy Nexus truly supports BT 4.0+BLE or is just BT 4.0 compatible without BLE capabilities. And even if it does...odds are the next Nexus device will run Android 5.0 with full BT4.0+BLE support (pure speculation on my part, just running the odds). I would rather Google engineers be working on that - than a phone that was meant for developers....not actually a flagship device as everyone wants to claim. (This is my opinion on the matter)
Just because a device has the markings of Bluetooth 4.0 doesn't mean it automatically get's all the advantages of BLE. The device must specifically state that it supports BLE. And so far, I haven't really seen anything on the market that supports BLE that makes me go:
"Holy crap, I need this product...we must have this on our phone now!"
This same marketing scheme was addressed with BT 3.0 and 3.0+HS (AKA 3.1). Everyone slapped on BT 3.0 numbers but didn't include 3.0+HS on the product. Creates product hype and people will buy it without doing research.
Why? So that we can play with devices like this:

Notice it says Bluetooth 4.0....and does not mention BLE. Meaning it's backwards compatible with Bluetooth 3.0 and the differences without BLE are minimal for this type of device. So....basically no need for 4.0 implementation on the Galaxy Nexus to use this toy.

Another one is all the new automatic door locks. The list is growing quickly if you look at Indiegogo and Kickstarter...

Yes, 6 months later the Indiegogo and Kickstarter projects are beginning. And the list is beginning to grow. However, there is still no confirmation, that I've seen, that the SGN has 4.0+BLE. We've only seen that it has a chip with 4.0 capability. Without BLE support, the access to 4.0 won't be as advantageous for all these new devices as some might think.
Plus, how long will it take for these new jump-start companies/devices to be funded, and complete, and available? It took almost a year for the Pebble watch and CooKoo watch to finally be released to investors. This Fall the SGN will be 2 years old. Around the corner is another rumored Nexus Device. How much manpower is Google going to actually devote to the software development in the Galaxy Nexus in future upgrade releases? I hope it will be there; but probably not a lot. The focus right now is the Nexus 4 and whatever the next gen Nexus device is. I'm not arguing against the addition of 4.0 (and hopefully 4.0+BLE) software upgrades to the SGN; but I think users making a demand for it at this point is a little over the top.
If Android 4.3 does indeed have the support for BT 4.0 as rumored you'll find out if it actually has BLE or not. If it doesn't...you're just gaining the newest Bluetooth stack without any of the power savings (maybe some slight power savings)....which might (or might not) work with all these new creations.
This thread is for owners of the Sony XSP-N1BT. The goal is to get more people connected with this receiver and try to get dev support for the software used with this unit. I will be posting some video that shows the functionality of this unit.
I have been installing for many years and was building carputers 15 years ago before they had enough power to do what we needed.
I am fairly convinced after a couple of weeks with this head unit that it is a great concept that needs a bit of XDA love. So that being said who owns one of these and uses it daily?
For the future
Here is a quick video for those that have not seen it...https://m.youtube.com/?reload=2&rdm=1hiljbep#/watch?v=rLYVFj3y86I
I am currently using my Note edge with it which works near flawlessly so you do not need a Sony phone by any sense.
Has anyone used/tried 7X for phone calls that use Hearing Aids? Won one & was thinking of giving it to my grandmother, but it has no mention of hearing aid compatibility.
Thanks in advance
Hi all, I've got a PX5 (MX) in my Hyundai i30, unfortunately it's just very slow. Particularly swiping to type. I know my one only has 2gb of ram, but it's definitely much slower than android phones with similar specs.
Everything just takes long to load. For example Google assistant takes about 3 seconds from when I press the button to when I can talk to it.
I'm currently running a custom Magisc ROM with Android 10, but this problem has definitely also been around when I had stock ROMs installed and across android 8, 9 and 10.
I've done a search and there are some posts from a few years ago, but other than uninstalling all Google services, there weren't really any suggestions.
Given there aren't many people complaining about almost unusable slow units, I'm thinking maybe mine is slower than others.
Any suggestions?
Would love to hear others, and would love if somebody contradicts me, but my unit also became laggy with time. Most noticeable when interacting Google Maps (to the point of becoming annoying) mainly when I need to input a new address. Music works OK, and I do not really use assistant. I went back to Android 8 (Hal9K) but that did not help much.
I think is just the HW and the fact that apps (not only the OS) become more and more resource-hungry with newer versions. I'd challenge that you can find a phone with the same old specs of PX5, and I know Google has launched a web-based "Google Maps"(reduced) to solve complains in old phones.
But would love if somebody can contradict me and provide some hints for a deep-cleaning
In the meantime, praying that some china company will launch new devices on 2022 based on the latest RK with 4xA76 (yea, I know, too new...will taje some time)

Thanks for your reply, glad I'm not the only one. Do you mind telling me the specs of your one? 2Gb of RAM as well?
Have you both observed px5 temps?

Between 42°C and 67°C when I had a look, but changing very rapidly.
Ambient temperature around 28°C, car cabin temperature maybe 24°C.
I know for a PC CPU this would be considered running very cool.

I have been looking at them... but I understand they forcefully remove Google Assistant to use their own assistant, and that is a blocking point for me on two accounts: first I have most of my data on Google (for good or bad), second I am not sure I can trust a HW provider which blocks SW / wants to decide which SW I am allowed to use...
But thanks for the advice. I have heard they are good units and not everybody is aware of them. Other people looking at this thread could benefit by taking a look at them
Hi all, I'm pretty new to this scene and was hoping for some support and guidance from the community. And apologies if I'm hijacking the post but all other threads seemed dead with old replies. I have recently purchased a 2nd hand car which had a PX5 head unit. I will post the device details below, but I was hoping you could point me in the right direction to download a newer and compatible firmware/mcu for my unit. I'm used to flash custom rom/firmwares on android mobile phones so I do understand the process itself quite well, it's just the firmware/mcu compatibility with this device that I'm unsure of. Thank you in advance for the support.

I am not familiar with KGL Units, but according to this post they are compatible with Dasaita/HotAudio SW, and there is a thread on the MTCD General Questions subforum with links to the latest firmware for the Dasaita/HA MCU (although I haven't really seen any advantage of updating the firmware for several years... I think that since 2018 they have focused more on fixing bugs for MTC-E mainboards and newer ones rather than MTC-D). If you do not know if you have a MTC-D or a MTC-E, check if the board has an actual DSP-daughterboard or not (the "MTC-E" version that is reported on settings indicates that you have a MTC-D/MTC-E SW release and not that your board is really MTC-E)
As for Android itself, I wouldn't recommend to update it to Android 9. I have noticed SOME responsiveness improvement with Hal9K mod in Android 10, but you might loose the Bluetooth as Android 10 is not compatible with some old chipsets (check on the discussion about that in HW-Development, and the proposed solution)
