Pixel XL - constantly defaulting to "USB supplying power to attached device"
No matter what I do, this phone constantly defaults to setting it to "USB supplying power to attached device" mode. I have never used this option so I'm unsure why the phone is doing this. I also need to adjust the settings when I try to charge it because it does not recognize that it is plugged in to a charger. After plugging in the phone to the charger, sometimes it will correct itself to "Charging" mode by switching it in the drop-down of the notification area and sometimes it will switch over after opening the Battery in settings. I have to play with the settings just to get it to charge every time and always have to have it plugged in first otherwise it will immediately default back to "USB supplying power to attached device" mode.
This phone was purchased used from someone who said they rooted the phone, but didn't install any images or roms. It currently is not rooted. And it is the Google Store version with the unlocked bootloader. Not sure if that info helps.
Can anyone tell me if this is a hardware or software issue and how to fix it?

Oddly enough after the last update I started having this problem with my radio.
I have a kenwood dnx694s. When I would plug my phone up for Android auto I would instead get the message you are getting."supplying power to attached device".
I simultaneously installed ex kernel and bought a new type c cable so I cant tell you which one fixed it. But the problem did not occur after that.
Only problem I'm having now is my charging port is going to hell. Cables don't stay in, and while trying to use my phone while charging it quickly changes between charging and discharging.

Charge options randomly popping up while plugged in

While my phone is plugged in via usb and charging, it will randomly pop up a message asking me my charging option even though it was already charging.
Anyone experienced this?
I have had this issue with previous android phones if Sync was not installed. The only way I can get it to not pop up is to turn off USB debugging. Not sure if yours is on but I would check it.
I can consistently get that message to pop up "randomly" when I use a task manager to kill all running apps. Apparently one of them is managing which option you chose and when you kill it, it re-detects that you're plugged in and asks again.
Not sure specifically which app it is.
i had the same issue with Sync not being installed BUT once you install Sync you must reboot before it work consitantly I have found.

[Q] I have major power and USB problems

hi there,
I have two (potentially related) problems, the power draw of my desire is immense, from a full battery I get 3hrs tops (in airplane mode). Even when plugged in I don't get much longer i receive a message saying that the power draw is too high.
I have tried restoring factory settings a few times, 3 different batteries and an external charger.
I thought it might be worth trying a custom ROM to see if that helps but i can't get the phone to connect to the computer, it appears to "charge" when plugged in (although still with the above problem) and when i enable USB debugging it senses that there is a cable plugged in and says "USB debugging connected" but the computer can't see it and the phone never asks what i want to do with it when it's plugged in. I've played around with all the USB settings on the phone, tries 2 different cables, 2 computers and both winXP and Ubuntu.
any ideas?
Liambass.

[Q] USB issues - not charging - can't get into fastboot mode

Hello everyone,
having major USB issues on my GNex. It's not charging anymore, but when the phone is off, it displays a charging animation. I could get it to charge once since this occurred, I left it plugged in overnight on my Mac (phone turned off). Did the same thing last night, no charge at all.
Mac OSX does not recognize the device, my Windows machine keeps telling me something like "the connected device is not working properly and can't be used... ". This message pops up every few seconds, so I guess it's constantly connecting and disconnecting. I can't access the internal storage on both systems.
My first guess was a hardware defect. But when I try to boot into recovery mode, a screen instantly pops up that shows Andy and displays a message: "Downloading. Do not turn off target.". In the upper left corner it displays " ODIN MODE" in small red letters.
When I press the power button in this screen (there is a big arrow pointing to the button with "start" written in it) the phone just normally reboots.
I can't get into fastboot mode because of this. I can get into CWM Recovery when i use the reboot into recovery option built in the ROM.
I dunno much about Odin (next to nothing). Has it something to do with Samsungs Kies? Could it be that something has put my phone in this "ODIN MODE" and it constantly tries to download something, making the USB port unusable? The port is not completely broken, as the phone displays a charging animation when it's turned off... so there is some connectivity left!
Thoughts coming up that this could be some kind of software issue. If there is a possibility to get out of the Odin Mode, it may solve the problem.
The phone is unlocked and rooted, running AOKP Milestone 5 and franco kernel.
I tried to restore an older nandroid, but it did not change anything.
Would send it in for exchange, but not able to relock the bootloader due to no fastboot access. If it can be confirmed that this is a hardware problem, I have to pay for the repair, I'm fine with that.
Has anybody any ideas that could be helpful? Any help is much appreciated, thank you in advance!
Do a search and you will find at least 30 helpful threads. Basically you only need to replace your USB charging board and it works again. Should be a warranty issue, but Samsung has really been an ass on handling this issue lately and claiming water damage.
I have mentioned it many times here: this problem can be probably solved by thoroughly cleaning your USB with soft toothbrush.
True, I also cleaned my port but it only fixed it temporarily.
Thanks guys. Tried to clean the port, nothing changed.
Ordered an OEM charging board off ebay, hope changing it will fix the issue.
Only thing I'm wondering about is, that the phone is stuck in Odin Mode when I boot it up with Vol. - and the Power Switch. So I downloaded Odin but it does not recognize the phone...
I am also facing the same problem. I am currently using the phone by charging the battery externally. Can someone confirm that changing the USB flex cable is the solution ?
Just posted in another thread but it is definitely the USB port for me. Using an HTC Vision (Google g2)

G5 - Android 7.0 Nougat USB Connection Notification No Longer Present, Phone Not Seen

I've had a MOTO G5 for several months at least. This issue came up recently as I was able use the USB connection notification to switch the phone to file transfer via USB with no problem. Everything worked. This notification no longer appears. The phone also does not show up on the PC at all.
I have tried numerous cables and different ports on the PC. I have also booted the computer up as Linux (which is what I normally use and the phone worked with) and I have also booted it up in Windows 10. The phone is not detected in either case nor does the notification appear. I have also connected it to another Windows 10 computer entirely and the phone is not connected. In all cases it I'm using USB1. They are all older computers and none have USB three and only one has USB 2 and USB 1, but, I use 1 generally, but, also tried 2. I don't know which version of USB cables are for. I've tried three data/charge cables and I think two of them are just for USB 1 and the other is new so might be rated for 3. I don't know.
I have installed the latest Windows drivers and the MTP drivers are all up to date when running Linux. In linux I have run some USB commands like usbls and none of them see this device.
I do know the phone has had a few updates including a security patch or some OS update recently. The computer at least when running Linux (Mint 18.2) has had some updates as well. I don't know exactly when the problem started as I don't transfer files all the time, but, the file transfer ceased functioning at some point after updates.
So I'm assuming the problem is software related, but, I think the micro USB port is mechanically attached to the motherboard and connects with a ribbon cable. I may try installing a new port, but, I don't think that is the problem.
I've contacted Motorola technical support. After about a week Q & A they responded that my phone was a UK model and I needed to talk the the UK support. I had them refer me so I wouldn't be starting over from scratch. They sent me a standard list of things to try which I did and responded to what happened. They then said their were elevating me to senior tech support staff. After several more days they said they heard back from the senior support staff that they don't support Linux. Throughout the entire thread and specifically in the reply about what to try and reporting back I included how it behave in both Linux and with Windows 10.
In looking through some other forums I see that this is an issue in some other phones as well, not just MOTOs and it may have to do with a security update that came with Android 8. Android 8 isn't available for this phone yet in the US, but, I'm thinking that maybe the latest security update for 7 has some things from the 8 patch. Maybe???
Does anyone have any knowledge of what might be the problem or the fix? I will continue to try to work with Motorola/Lenovo, but, I'm anticipating they will after some more discussion say it is an OS problem. I have seen that at least for this problem on some Google Pixel phones with a similar problem a place you can go to submit some log files to Google as part of a bug report. Is this something I can do on this phone as well.
Does the phone show its charging when it's plugged into the pc?
If yes skip the next question
Does the phone show its charging when it's plugged into the mains?
If either of these don't work its likely there's a hardware problem with the USB port of your phone
If it shows it's charging its more likely a software problem why it can't detect file storage
USB 2 is fully backwards compatible with USB 1 - basically USB 2 is just a faster version
As far as I'm aware nothing in the latest security patch has stopped usb from working
I assume you didn't decline any connection message that may have appeared on your phone
You can try the following
Enable USB debugging by activating developer mode in settings - goto about phone and keep pressing on build number until it says your a developer then go back to the main settings menu and enable USB debugging from developer options
Now test USB connection and see if it gives you the option to select file storage - it should at least say USB debugging enabled when plugged into the pc
Do a factory reset of your device - this will erase all data so backup first
Power the phone completely off.
Press and hold the “Volume Down” and the “Power” buttons simultaneously. Release both buttons when you see the menu appears.
Use the “Volume Down” button to toggle the selection on the menu to “Recovery mode“.
Press the “Power” button to choose the “Recovery mode” selection.
A screen should appear with the Android robot. While on this screen hold down the “Power” button while pressing and releasing the “Volume Up” button.
Continue to hold “Power” until you see the Android Recovery menu, characterized with an Android lying on its back.
Use the Volume Up/Down buttons to toggle the menu selection to “wipe data / factory reset“. Press the “Power” button the choose the option.
Use the Volume Up/Down buttons to toggle the menu selection to “Yes – erase all user data“. Press the “Power” button to select it.
If after doing that it doesn't work it could be hardware related or it would require more exstencive testing
Thanks for the thorough reply. I'll give a quick reply. It might take a day to before I get a chance do all of the suggestions.
When connected by USB the phone does say it is charging. Although the charge notification is not present, if I click on the battery icon it says that is charging.
I'll have to figure out how to back my data up.

Click to collapse
Also make sure you haven't blocked the notifications from appearing
Settings - prompts & notifications (may vary depending on device)
I've looked over notifications and I don't think I have them blocked, plus the phone or storage doesn't show up on Windows or Linux computers. I know I did play around some with notifications because I kept getting a prompt whether I want to activate Android Assistant and the only option it had was yes, and locking things up.
I did the reset and restore as well and everything was as before. I also went ahead and ordered a new USB port board and installed it and still no USB notification and device is not detected by computers. However, I will point out that I haven't connected the antenna yet. I'm waiting till I can get some lighting magnification before I try. I can't see well enough to line things up. I know from experience with laptops that if I try to force it when it isn't aligned properly I'll just bend the connector and possibly destroy it.

Charging only on Restart - No USB connection - No LED

Hey guys, wondering if you've run into a similar problem. I'm on stock 7.0 (with magisk & xposed) 4.49.605.16 Firmware.
My phone will no longer charge or recognize a USB connection when plugged in. No LED indicator. However, I am able to charge the phone if I plug it in and then restart (still no USB connection though... the phone doesn't seem to know it's plugged in, only that it is charging). When I disconnect after the restart the phone then loses the able to charge until I reconnect and reboot. Any ideas?
I've played around with USB debugging settings in Dev Options (some posts suggested toggling setting to 'fix' the issue). No dice.
Rebooted multiple times (with and without xposed enabled).
I'm not convinced that it's a hardware issue seeing as it constantly charges after reboot. I'm not sure if re-flashing anything again would help (and I can't connect to adb!). I've seen some posts on the internet attribute the problem to a flex cable but I don't see how that could cause problem as the phone still retains partial functionality.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
In case anyone is curious or has run into a similar situation, this was most definitely a hardware problem. If your phone charges while off (or when it's turned on while plugged in) but not afterwards, the sister board with the USB and headphone jack has failed (ignore all of the explanations and attempted workarounds seen online). Fortunately, it's an easy fix (especially if you've dug around the inside of the m9 before). The component is about $8.00-$9.00 USD and in theory you don't have to remove the motherboard or battery to replace the bit. I swapped the board and charging and USB connectivity work like before.
