Flash Magisk boot image on locked bootloader? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Sorry if this is naive, but the s9 (g960U) is the first phone I've had with a locked bootloader
I'm wondering if anyone with this model has tried to flash a magisk boot image with odin, and had any luck?
Seems like the most likely way to get some semblance of root without being able to flash TWRP.
Any one tried it/is it worth trying, and if i do try it, is there a special version of Odin that would be necessary?

You can't. My understanding of "locked bootloader" is that the device simply won't allow you to flash anything that isn't signed by Samsung.

That's my understanding too, that's why i haven't taken the time to just try it.
I've read things about a modified version of odin that lets you flash unsigned images, but i don't know if that's still a thing and if it would apply here

You can't flash anything custom with a locked bootloader. modified ODIN or not

I am just freaking amazed at the folks that attempt to modify their devices without thorough research and at least searching for answers that have been posted over and over again.

Do you mean me? Because i haven't attempted to modify, this is my research. And i haven't seen this asked since magisk just added support for the s9, so I'm curious to know if that changed anything for locked bootloaders, since topjohnwu didn't say much about what kind of support was added.
And I'm just desperately clinging onto hope for returning to a rooted device.

If it's snapdragon it's locked.

False. There are unlockable snapdragons. The s9 is the SM-G9600 and the s9+ is the SM-G9650.
Please help stop spreading this misconception. Thanks

As OP has a US flag set as their country, and even states "G960U" in their post, their snapdragon is locked, as most of them are locked, only two that are not and are not US models, as has been the case since at least the S7, I can't speak for previous

All true, but does not change the fact that "if it's a snapdragon it's locked" is not a true statement. I live in the us, and have a snapdragon, but my bootloader is unlocked.

Need help with bypassing bootloader unlock (EE) UK

Gone through the LG dev site, put in IMEI and Device ID, message pops up saying
the page at developer.lge.com says:
Unfortunately, your device (EE,UK) does not support unlocking the bootloader.
Is there a way around this, I would like to root my phone...and this whole "hold" over my android device isn't good at all.
EDIT, Sorry, i've got the LG G4 which is the phone in question, not the LG G3 as stated in my Sig.

Should be able to root using the method in the root thread with no issues.
As far as getting a G4 on EE, go via CarphoneWarehouse as you get a Euro unlocked device and not an EE branded device.

Dam that's a *****. I'm wondering if you could flash the KDZ of the EURO unlocked device and convert it from an EE device to an unlocked one. I know this used to be possible with Samsung device, this is my first LG (apart from a Nexus) so not fully up to speed on these things yet. May be worth investigating though.

If your worried about not picking the right version, then I would avoid proceeding with that method. As if it isn't one of the version in the OP, you need to change the commands too. Post a screenshot of your Software Info screen and I'll point you in the right direction.
But you need to read through both those posts before proceeding to understand what your doing.

As far as I can tell, you only have a carrier specific version of software and no actual hardware differences from H815 itself, which makes sense EE just using their own software (like the twats they are). This being the case you should be able to proceed with flashing the H815-10c image and gain root, this may also mean you can unlock the bootloader.
If the worst happens and you can't boot, you can just use a kdz image to revert to stock following the guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/guide-lg-g4-stock-firmware-to-stock-kdz-t3107848
You can gain a stock KDZ with this url, replace 'YOURIMEIHERE' with your imei number:
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=YOURIMEIHERE

Unlocking vzw bootloader Android O beta?

Just a thought, has anyone tried this? Just curious.
I don't believe there are any devs working on it since the last update that patched the "Depixel8" software. Seems they've given up on the VZW variant. There is a bounty somewhere in these forums. For both bootloader unlock exploit and temp root to flash TWRP and hopefully SuperSU. But I don't know if anyone is trying or what.

Honestly what is in it for the devs to find another exploit, just for it to be patched again, especially that there is an unlocked model of the phone. If they all were locked down, most likely they would try. Honestly just sell the VZW Version and buy the GPE. It is still locked on O, while being TMO.

Hey all!
I'm new to Samsung completely, I have experience rooting, as I've had multiple Nexus devices, and other rootable phones. Just never had a Samsung. I recently took the Oreo OTA update, and was wondering about the best rooting method? Ive read that you lose secret folder. Is there a way to keep that?
Basically I just want to debloat more and theme without having to use Andromeda, as that is annoying.

Yes it will work fine on oreo, as long as the 2nd to last number of the version you are on isn't a 3. Example:
Good: G950USQU2CRB7
Not Good: G950USQU3CRC6
^-- That right there is a no no for now
But afaik there is so rom in existence for 950u with a 3 there. Just something to watch for in the future.
You don't need to flash back to nougat stock first either. Your should be able to go straight to pcr. If you have trouble with the first step you can try flashing part 2 first, followed by 1 then 2 again, but i fine expect you will have any issues.

Not exactly, this is a root/rom combo. So it will downgrade you back to Nougat version 2 bootloader firmware, root your device, and flash a ROM all at the same time. So there is no way to flash a different ROM since the rooting process and ROM flashing is built into one step.

True, but if anyone is still lucky enough to be on version 2 bootloader on Oreo they still can downgrade to Nougat version 2 bootloader and use that Root/ROM combo to root their device since it works on ver. 2 bootloader but not 3. And yeah, screw Verizon!

Yeah its flashing an engineered firmware, and it trips knox which is needed for secure folder I think. I looked on my S8+ and couldn't find secure folder anywhere, so I'm guessing the ROM removes it.

Whatever happened to those days. S**t, the last few ROMs I was flashing on the N6 were all pretty much the same. I miss being pissed off that one rom had all the things I wanted but looked hideous. Then everything got CM based and themes were everywhere. Then it all just got the same. Then it all got locked down. Almost like Android and Google were playing the devs getting them to make the mods, then them steal them, and incorporate them, then lock it down.

I'm sorry for this basic question, but does the phone being carrier unlocked make any difference? I know that has nothing to do with the bootloader; I'm simply asking if the phone not being Verizon-specific has any effect on rootability ... I was just about to purchase an unlocked S8+ when I saw this thread and almost spewed Mountain Dew all over my monitor. I had no idea Verizon had squelched root, although no surprise there, right?

And do you know if there is a certain model number or letter designation after the model number I should be looking for? I'm shopping on Swappa and eBay and need to be really careful. Does Unlocked Bootloader Stop Google Pay/Banking Apps

I had someone suggest I leave my bootloader unlocked. I usually relock it. Does leaving it unlocked stop Google Pay and banking apps from working. Or Games like Pokemon Go?
That was me, but other more knowledgeable folks should feel free to chime in as we all could learn something here.
As I said in the other thread, I don't know. What I do know is that Google's safetynet is more likely to prevent you from using banking apps, Pokémon Go, or Google Pay than the bootloader. Case in point, I have my bootloader completely unlocked yet I still pass safetynet. Now, if an app actively checks for an unlocked bootloader then you may have an issue, but I'm not aware of apps that check for bootloader unlock status.

It will certainly stop Google Pay from working, as the phone will report it is insecure.
Banking apps may or may not depending on what they check for.

Unlocked breaks Pay. I don't recall any other apps that care.
Leave it unlocked. The forums here are littered with posts that say.... help, I relocked and now it is bricked......and those phones are still bricked.
Don't do it, it's Russian Roulette.
Flash a custom kernel that hides the unlock. Most all of them do, or root it with Magisk and that will hide it.

its not incorrect, an unlocked bootloader on stock Android will cause Google Pay to not work.
Your root hides the unlocked bootloader (which is why it passes safetynet)

You made a blanket statement that an unlocked bootloader definitely stops Google Pay from working. We both know this isn't true.
You aren't just answering the question for OP, but also for any other user who might search for a topic like this.
You should probably edit your post to say that it will definitely stop Google Pay from working if you do not take further steps to protect safety net integrity.

I dont assume anything, had they asked the question differently, then maybe they would get a different answer.
Now people will go unlock their bootloader, without root and wonder why the hell Google pay isn't working, because someone said it would.

Here's the thing: you can have an unlocked bootloader, without root, and still pass Safety Net by flashing a kernel which incorporates this patch: https://github.com/sultanxda/androi...bc05b16bbd33521c2fffaf491c5657a94bfcfc5.patch
You are continuing to ignore that you are not only answering a question for OP, but for anyone who may come across this thread.

Nope, I only answered for the OP, with the information provided. Im not answering to anyone else.
If they are already going through all the other stuff, they wouldnt be asking the question, since you're stuck on 'nuance' and assumptions.

You're assuming the OP wouldn't root and would not flash a kernel.
My whole point is that you shouldn't make that assumption.

[SM-T837V][Combo Firmware and Stock Firmware Files]

Hello Folks!
As soon as I got the tablet I spent a good few hours looking around for the combo firmware to start looking for exploits so figured I would provide you guys with a link to the firmware for free
It was quite funny actually, after I soft bricked and got stuck in a boot loop I realized I couldn't find any stock firmware anywhere either haha, so I spent a few hours looking for that as well.
I have the Verizon variant, I am not sure if it will work on other USA variants or not as I have no way of trying. With that being said, below will be the links. I will provide a rev1 combination firmware and a rev1 stock firmware as well as a link to a modified ODIN for easy flashing!
And with all that being said, the combo firm is good to bypass FRP. You can enable the oem unlock switch but other than removing FRP it is useless as of right now. You can however, mix and match the firmware unlike my S9+. I am currently on stock firmware with a permissive boot.img for example.
If you got questions or need help, well, you probably shouldn't be downloading anything or flashing haha. But I will try to help when I have time. I do not have any current plans to keep this thread going with updated filese as I had to pay for these. If I can find em free moving forward I will re-upload if I can but I typically stay on the lowest rev/firmware I can until I find a root method
T837VVRU1ARG4 COMBINATION FIRMWARE/FACTORY BINARY
T837VVRU1ARGG STOCK FIRMWARE
MODDED ODIN v3.13.1
If you feel like buying me a beer...
What is the main benefit of this?
In the q&a section someone wrote it is readily rootable with Magisk. Is that not the case?
@elliwigy
Is there any firmware for the unlocked LTE snapdragon. I got the Verizon version but it's not playing nice with AT&T. Any ideas? Maybe flashing the unlocked firmware would help.

I think it's just the tablet, my Verizon one isn't playing nice with my Verizon service. Constantly not switch towers and losing service when full service is available. Or it's a tower problem but my note8 doesn't do it when my tablet does
Thanks for this, have been looking for a couple days for the build.prop file.
If you get permissive boot, try adb verity disable and mod through push pull adb style like we did on Att note 5
Will this work on sm-t817v?

I actually had a 817v. They called it the pro version. It was just an updated version at the time.
OEM Unlock
I have the T837V and would like to ODIN flash your files, but as you know there is no OEM unlock in the Developer Options on this tablet. Are you saying that you can flash these files without enabling the OEM unlocking?
I would like to install TWRP, but I believe this is not possible without enabling the OEM unlock. Do you know if this is true?
Thanks

@elliwigy any idea what I could flash on a T835C without breaking Knox? Do you think I could flash a T835N or T835 no suffix ROM with modified Odin?

Forgive my apparent noobishness but what exactly will that do? Looking for a way to root and wanna know if u have found something I haven't.
Flash firm then what? Does it make OEM show or what? I just happen ta have the most difficult version of the tab S4 which is SM-T837V

I am currently working on a root method with the N9 but it should also work on Tab S4 once all is said and done. I actually found the exploit I use on the Tab S4 originally before I started workin the N9. Nothing is released yet as so far have only gained root on S9 Exynos and I am currently super bricked and waiting for a device replacement lol
Flashing other carrier firmware won't help you unlock any bootloaders or anything nor will it necessarily help you root. Only benefit I can see really in flashing other carrier firmware is say if you have an sim unlocked tablet (we'll say it's a Verizon tablet) and you want to use it on say Sprint. You can flash the Sprint software in ODIN and everything should work. It would be like you purchased the tablet from Sprint essentially.
